Cuculia

"This beautiful restaurant with a smart and elegant decor has the feel of a stylish French bistro with a small library-style dining room displaying books on cookery and other subjects. Chef Oliver Betancourt left his home country of Venezuela to train in well-known restaurants in France, Spain and Italy, experiences which have resulted in multi-faceted cuisine influenced by different traditions and prepared using seasonal Italian produce as well as more exotic ingredients such as kombu, soy sauce and koji. The menu offers a good selection of vegetarian dishes, as well as a few vegan options. The wine list includes extensive information on the different labels featured, including an excellent red from Bolgheri Acciderba." - Michelin Inspector

Google
I knew nothing about this restaurant prior to walking in. We stumbled upon it and were fortunate to get in without a reservation. We had the five course meal which came with some additional surprises from the chef. Each plate was beautifully prepared and creative. The staff were fantastic and attentive. The lamb in a spicy bean sauce was probably the highlight for me but everything was delicious, innovative and unexpected. If you’re in Florence and looking for a new experience, I highly recommend this fine establishment.

Google
We were very gladly surprised by this restaurant. We went there because we needed to be near our church where we have booked tickets for a classical music concert. So we were taking our chances with this restaurant because there was no recommendation and we only did it based on Google reviews. The location is relatively close to ponte Veccio and super easy to access walking or with a cab. The process of making a reservation was super easy on Google maps. We were greeted by the chef with some feta and watermelon and also some broccolini with puffed rice, which was fantastic. For dinner my wife had the amberjack, I had the pork fillet and my daughter had the shrimp Tagliolono. Our favorite dishes were the pasta and the pork. Super strong tastes with a lot of personality. I felt the amberjack was a little bit weak, but that is normal because I was having a very potent dish. The waiters were great with all the food intolerances our group had. We will certainly be recommend this place through friends and family who happen to be in Florence.

Google
Exceptional place! Beautiful food mixing in Japanese ingredients with classic Italian. Sound like an improbable marriage but works like magic. Broccoli with miso and quinoa crust. Imaginative and approachable cooking in a relaxed, quiet setting. Trust the chef with the 5 course set menu!

Google
I would say it’s the best food experience in Italy so far. I visited the restaurant with my family and I was afraid the food will be good since we were hungry. The most delicious dishes for me the beef in addition to the pasta!! It was incredible. Also the chef and waiter they were so friendly and the service I couldn’t describe it!! Really thank you for the experience

Google
Amazing food. I mean, actually amazing. This is by far one of the best restaurants I have ever been to. My partner and I went and got the five course meal. It came with two starters, one first course, one second course, and a dessert. Everything was phenomenal. Our waitress was great, very kind and explained everything to us. They also gave us free bread, focaccia, and a few different small bites/palate cleansers. I recommend the tagliatelle (the pasta), it was my best bite of the night. I’d come here every night if I could. Definitely make time for this on your trip.

Google
Amazing vegan tasting menu with wine pairing. The experience was exquisite, if $$$, and worth it. We ended up with 11 courses and 7 wines - we have had several tasting menus in the past but this was extra special.

What a treasure! If you like innovative, fresh flavours, seafood, fantastic service from the owner and an eclectic interesting atmosphere, don’t miss this fabulous food find!

Yelp
Great meal, service and food was equally incredible. Owners were very nice too. One of my favorite restaurants in the city.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner here, food was very good and a nice break from the Florentine standards. Had a very delicious unusual chamomile amaro after dinner. The ambience was quiet

Yelp
This restaurant is a MUST in Florence (Firenze)! The most fantastic meal we have enjoyed in Italy (one of our best ever)! The restaurant, the music & environment, the staff, the Chef, and THE FOOD, are all amazing!!! Small and quaint and intimate dining. A family group or a romantic dinner for two - THIS is your place and the price is SURE to please you (far less than would be expected)!!!! We did the 5 course chef-recommended dinner with the chef's wine recommendation at each course! Pasta with prawns, raw red drum fish, duck breast with the most amazing demi-glaze gives your palette a full and complete array of tastes and paired with the correct wine brings out even more amazing flavor. My family loved the restaurant, the staff, the atmosphere and the food! We had the most amazing time! In fact, time flies by as you enjoy this amazing experience!!! We will be back again and again. It was recommended to us by a young lady working at Gucci Garden - she said "this" is where you want to go and was she ever correct!!!! After dinner, hope over and stroll along the river and breath in the air and just relax!!

Yelp
Absolutely wonderful!!! The flavors were complex and layered. The Risotto was the best that I have ever had! My husband is vegan and their vegan selections for dinner and desert were fabulous. They chose a local wine for us that I dying to have again. The restaurant is a small, intimate, lovely place. I will never forget the chocolate mousse. It is a MUST on any visit to Florence!!!!! The service was equally spectacular! I want to go back!!

Yelp
We really enjoyed our meal at Cuculia. Very friendly staff and unique dishes. The presentation of the food was really 5 stars. We showed up at 10:30 with our little kids and they were very accommodating. For service I would give them 5 stars as well. The only reason we rate it at 4 stars is that some of the dishes can be a bit light and lack sufficient flavor to make you full and satisfied. The food is very delicate and you should be prepared to spend a reasonable amount of time as the staff really does want you give you the time to enjoy the meal. Don't go when you are rushed and order a couple courses so that you can really taste the chefs creations. Our favorites: Seitan, Gazpacho, Millefoglie Great Vegetarian options.

Yelp
Amazing presentation and food! Chef really likes what he does, he has a talent for this and a passion for food. Complimentary tomato gazpacho soup with carrots, mushroom, sesame seeds and lettuce was really good! Vegetable spring rolls were amazing!! Tagliatelle - I really liked flavor of this dish. It was amazingly fresh and delicious! Mediterranean potato floral pasta filled dish was pretty good too. No official desserts on the menu, just a display of biscotti, coconut balls, apple dessert and chocolate Brownie thing. Great service, and very nice employees. Decor is traditional bookstore, home feel to it. Small area, might miss it if you walk by, no official sign on top of building, but definitely worth it!!

Yelp
Cuculia is an adorable, quirky bar/bookstore/bookshop/exhibition space on via de' Serragli. It may look small from the outside, but looks are very deceiving; to the left of the main entrance is a dining area with books, and if you walk straight ahead you'll find a long room with even more books, plus a tiny outdoor nook that's perfect for a cocktail by candlelight. They have a fantastic aperitivo that consists of a drink, plus a plate of food. But not just your usual aperitivo fare. They serve you a plate with several foods, artfully arranged. You almost don't want to eat, but when you do you'll be glad you did. They also have a long list of cocktails, long drinks, teas, hot chocolate, etc. They also have hold children's workshops, art show openings, performances, etc. Definitely pay them a visit. I wish I went more when I lived there!

Yelp
We stumbled upon this restaurant by accident, and it turnded out to be a true gem! They give a really unique and innovative twist on italian food, with delicious and surprising tastes as a result. The restaurant itself is very nice and cozy, you kind of feel like you are in someones living room while the staff treats you very friendly and polite. Definitely a reccommendation!

Yelp
Excellent dining experience! Unique menu options made with creative flair and served with gracious attention. Vegan friendly with everyone completely satisfied during each course. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Absolutely stunning combination of colors, tastes and combinations. Every dish was perfectly assembled to tickle and tantalize the taste buds.

Yelp
At first glance, the place makes you say "cuuuute" out loud! Such a careful touch of design, warm colors, vintage scrapes, flowers of any sort, soft yellow lights, pictures hanging from the wall. Service is welcoming from the start, they offer a menu both in Italian and English, but what is really likeable, they are not pressing like in some other haute cuisine restaurants. We ordered a salad (the exotic) which was very satisfying and it would have been enough as a whole meal itself and then I took Maltagliati with ginger, yogurt and eggplants and a seafood dish that was salmon with a fresh tomato sauce. They brought us an amazing gazpacho while we were waiting for our commande. And the long waiting between the dishes is why I'm giving 4*. We weren't that many people and we sat at 8.40 and finished at 11.10. Sometimes it's the best way to enjoy a dish and your meal with calm, but it's also true a little bit faster wouldn't kill. In the end, if you have time, this place Is just perfect. Pricy, but totally worth it!

Yelp
This was our best dinner in Italy! Each course was a special treat, starting with the complimentary soup. All artistically plated! Wait staff was very patient explaining the ingredients and offering suggestions. Husband had the tuna! I had codfish pasta. Risotto with coconut was delicious. Toughest choice was dessert. Food Channel fans will love!

Yelp
We had been dejected by many restaurants around the place, because we didn't have a reservation. We, with our little one (5yrs old) were welcomed by this restaurant. The service was top notch and food was beyond words could explain. We are vegetarians and had handful of options to choose from and all we ordered were delicious. They even made white cream sauce pasta for my son that wasn't on the menu. I would highly recommend this place for their service and food!! You won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Cuculia was the best dining experience we had in all of Italy. It was so warm and cozy and the service was wonderful. The food was unique, refreshing, and delicious! You could tell that the chef loves what he does and treats every meal as a work of art! We even returned the next day for another meal. I want to go back to Florence just to be able to dine at Cuculia again!

Yelp
Great little restaurant away from the tourists and which is focused on the food. A small expertly and creatively prepared menu which provides a wonderful cushion version of some of the worlds most popular dishes. Thoroughly enjoyable. Try the shrimp starter, a take on a Thai Tom Ka. The restaurant decor is fresh and funky located in an old commercial villa.

Yelp
Our appetizers were arguably the best vegan food we've had, period. The chef offered a special vegan soup at no charge that was indescribably good. The celery and lentils appetizer might be the best dish I've had on planet earth. The stuffed beat ravioli was also exceptional. Since I eat meat, I tried the pistachio encrusted steak entrée and was delighted. The staff was eccentric, entertaining, and very friendly. They let us in early to sit and drink wine because we asked when they opened.

Yelp
It was wonderful? No great in any way! We planned to have a simple Dinner but we got it In the most concentrated and love filled kind we we're Not able to imagine! Stayed for hours, cause they flew away in deliciousness. The Cook is an Artist for real! Fusion kitchen wood be to old fashioned for describing the molecular perfection they create here. Vegan, vegetarian an carnivores will get happy here! If you're interrested in Art, books and extraordinary normal tastest come and try! I will be back as soon as possible! But Note: they are located in 3R the 'R' is for gastronomical Red house numbers in Firence. Its nearly in tge middle of the street, Not on the outer end, as suggested online!

Yelp
Probably one of the best meals I've had in Florence. I was not expecting this from a bookstore/restaurant. I had the most beautiful spinach salad with thinly sliced beets & pomegranates. I also had the organic beef with onions. If you are only in Florence for a few days, make sure you dine here at least once. They also have a very nice wine selection & draft beers. Staff is very attentive. I loved it!

Yelp
Cuculia was a highlight of our eating experiences in Florence. We asked the concierge at our hotel to suggest a "non touristy" spot, and what a great surprise this was. Rosa greeted us up front and she was fantastic. She took us through the menu, and was very enjoyable and funny. The food presentation was amazing and delicious. The Chef is extremely creative and paired foods together that on paper may seem a bit odd, but it really works. We walked out with full bellies and great memories, and have suggested to anyone visiting Florence to make a reservation at Cuculia.

Yelp
Good food and atmosphere. Lots of choices, all that we had were good. Don't miss it if you enjoy vegetarian food.

Yelp
This meal was a highlight of our two week trip to Europe. The decor of the restaurant is simple, elegant and intimate. The staff was helpful but not hovering. BUT THE FOOD --- it was exquisite. The most beautiful meal I've ever had and it was so delicious. I can't say enough positive things about this place. And very affordable for the lovely experience it was. GO!!!! EAT!! ENJOY THE BEAUTY AND ARTISTRY.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Very welcoming host. Art and books are impressive; great attention to detail. Meal felt good - very enjoyable and may go again. It's a creative place! The starting cream you're given is really neat, and the bread I got was warm.
