Montreal Filipino Restaurant Adds New Street Food to the Offering — Its First Major Menu Change in 18 Years | Eater Montreal

"Over the past 18 years I’ve watched a Montreal Filipino restaurant undergo several transformations — from its former name, Perle de Manille to its third location — yet the food from chef-owner brothers Dado and Ricky Contaoe has remained unchanged at Cuisine de Manille. I’ve enjoyed their crisp lechon (fried pork belly) and pork ear sisig cooked in calamansi juice, and regulars in the city’s Filipino community still turn to the spot for those homestyle meals. Since settling into a discrete storefront on Victoria Avenue in 2012, the family-run business (now with the second generation, including Dado’s son Peter, helping lead operations) is adding a Manila-inspired street food menu: kwek-kwek — 10 hard-boiled-then-deep-fried quail eggs coated in an aromatic orange batter with a sweet dipping sauce — and okoy, a crunchy fritter reimagined here with veggies and served with traditional spiced vinegar. Peter, who returned from Manila inspired by its buoyant street-food scene, is also spearheading a brand overhaul and a renovation that moves the restaurant from the old Turo Turo buffet display to a more fast-casual, grab-and-go aesthetic featuring an elongated bar with corrugated steel detailing and a photo gallery wall evoking Manila; the change is meant to suit takeout times and appeal to the next generation. I’ve noted that the local Filipino community was crucial to the restaurant’s survival through the pandemic, coming by regularly to pick up the Contaoes’ dishes, and the brothers continue to perfect new recipes while taking pride in those passed down through generations." - Valerie Silva

The Best Restaurants in Côte-des-Neiges | Eater Montreal

Where to Eat Fantastic Filipino Food in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Tucked behind an unobtrusive exterior, Cuisine de Manille reveals a sleek, open dining area run by the Contaoe family: Dado, who has lived and worked in Côte‑des‑Neiges since the mid‑eighties and opened the restaurant in 2003 (moving it to Avenue Victoria in 2012), and his son Peter, who often greets guests from behind the counter. As a family‑owned spot committed to homestyle Filipino cooking, they keep the menu traditional and rotating buffet‑style, making it ideal for sampling staples like chicken adobo, BBQ pork and laing (a spicy, coconut‑milk taro dish). Its authenticity is clear — many of the customers are Filipino families who come for reliable, familiar flavours after long days of work." - Stephane Lavoie

Google
AMAZING authentic Filipino food. I came there with my girlfriend and had the sisig, palabok, and halo-halo for dessert! AMAZING! I was actually born in the Philippines and had these dishes before, and eating here felt like home! Definitely recommend coming here!! We’re also visiting from Massachusetts!! Definitely will be going back if we go back to Montreal!

Google
Delicious Filipino meal. I never really had a real filipino food before, only had the palabok from Jolliebee so I did not know what to expect when I go to the real filipino restaurant. Well, turns out this place did not disappoint me at all! Everything is delicious. My fav would be the palabok. Well presented as well. Thank you for making the good food!!

Google
One of the best meals I’ve ever had! We tried the pork adobo and BBQ chicken inasal. Both were absolutely delicious. Big thanks to Joanne and the team for the excellent service. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
I haven’t tried much filipino food. This place provides me a great experience with the filipino food. I really love sisig. Palabok also tastes good.( salty ). The spicy chicken is sweet and not that spicy spicy. Cute decoration. But the weather is super hot and inside is so hot. Paid streer parking in front of the restaurant.

Google
1st time : I had the 3 salads and garlic fried rice. They were all delicious. The staff are so sweet and the space is chill with good music selections 2nd time: I had the veggie lumpia Shanghai and they were great 3rd time: I usually eat vegan but I made an exception and ordered the calamari. The batter was light and flavourful and the calamari seemed to be good quality. Was defs worth the exception

• Cuisine de Manille (formerly Perle de Manille) is a Filipino restaurant in Montreal. • It has been operating since 2003. • Located at 5781 Avenue Victoria, Montréal, Quebec. ⸻ Cuisine & Menu • They serve authentic and traditional Filipino food, with influences from Spanish and Asian cuisine, reflecting the mix that characterizes much of Filipino culinary heritage. • Some of the standout dishes: • Lechon (whole spit-roasted pig) • Sisig • Beef Caldereta • Pancit Bihon • Halo-halo for dessert, among others. • They have a flexible menu: many dishes are prepared fresh, and the menu can vary daily. • There’s also a Kamayan feast option: a communal-style platter served on banana leaves, encouraging eating with hands — a festive and shared dining experience. • They offer catering / party trays for groups: different sizes (e.g. for ~15, 30, 50 people) are available. ⸻ Atmosphere & Practical Info • The restaurant is family-owned and has a warm, casual, welcoming vibe. • Good for groups, families, casual meals. • Hours are roughly 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM daily. • They do takeout, delivery (e.g. via Uber Eats) and offer both dine-in and catering. ⸻ Strengths & Things to Know Strengths: • Many people praise the food as authentic, flavorful, generous portions. • Their halo-halo and desserts are often mentioned as especially good. • The feast / platter style is popular for sharing. Things to be aware of / criticisms: • Some variability in consistency: a few reviews mention that certain dishes may not always meet expectations in terms of seasoning or texture. • Wait times can vary, especially during peak hours. • For some, prices feel a bit high relative to quantity, though many still consider it good value given the quality and authenticity.

Google
📍Kamayan Delicious and fun! A generous spread of meats, seafood, and rice, it's perfect for sharing. We picked BBQ pork and chicken legs. The garlic rice was a bit dry, and I wish there was hot sauce for extra kick. 📍Halo-Halo Cool and refreshing with just the right sweetness. Loved the ube and leche flan!!! 📍Honey Melon Juice You can really taste the fresh melon! Light, fresh, and super refreshing. Great match with the meal. However $12 per drink is a bit overpriced.

The fish (bangus) has gotten a lot smaller. Will never order again, however, the pork bbq was always a favorite.

Yelp
Went on a Thursday evening, and enjoyed our family dine-in as we have the place for ourselves. There are many patrons picking up orders or ordering take out. We ordered the sisig, ginataang gulay, and crispy pork with atchara. The food is what I expected. Delicious and satisfying. Considering this is in Montreal, the food, ambience, and hospitality, made me feel like I'm truly in Manila!

Yelp
This is a simple Filipino restaurant with a big flavor! The restaurant is very clean and the workers know their job they're reasonably priced and give good service this is one of those restaurants that's a wonderful find in Montreal! The hollo hollo is a dessert for Kings

Yelp
What a feast. The Kamayan platter is really for more than 2 people, but because everything was so delicious, I ate more than usual.

Jorge Daniel S.

Yelp
Very tasty food and friendly service. I think it's the best Filipino option in CDN. The fried chicken is excellent and the limpia rolls are unbelievable

Yelp
My favorite halo halo I've had so far! Love the corn flakes sprinkled in there and very generous amounts of jackfruit, coconut and jellies. Wish there was more shaved ice so that it didn't melt into milk so fast. Great price for the amount they give too, I shared it and we were so full.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, the one take away from eating here is that the food was cooked ahead and then reheated. Fried calamari and fried chicken are ok, but lose that wow factor when lukewarm. This is a grab'n'go type of place but I'm sure to ask next time for the possibility of making it fresh. Taste is pretty good overall and cafeteria style setting is very different than what I was expecting.

Nivetha S.

Yelp
So we came across this spot and we were very excited to try their famous halo halo dessert/drink. We've heard great things about the drink so wanted to give it a try. It was a bit pricey ($9.95) but you get a pretty big size which was good The taro Ice cream was salty .. which I was not expecting.. it threw me off a bit but the little things inside tasted pretty good (jelly and coconut Shavings) When mixing the whole thing, the flavour was a bit confusing to the palette .. it was like having a creamy nutty dessert but with pieces of jello and flan Probably wouldn't get this again.. but service was great 100%

Yelp
This is an off-season review of the only thing I had at Cuisine de Manille: Halo-Halo Halo-halo is a fun and popular Filipino treat that is best enjoyed in the heat of the summer. It's basically a mix (hence the name) of all kinds of jellies, ice cream, coconut, sweet beans, etc. Recipes and flavors vary widely, but it's kind of a tropical version of sundae. Cuisine de Manille's halo-halo is really pretty, and portions are generous. It's quite refreshing to eat in the summer - if you're into sweet (and rather artificial) flavors.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I were very interested in trying Philippine food. So we took a chance and went to cuisine de Manille. We ordered the "party special" and it was excellent. There was this amazing pile of garlic rice in the center surrounded by fried pork belly, roasted vegetable, fish filets and other delicious items. The flavours were remarkable. We always talk about Cusine de Manille and we will go back for sure. Enjoy :)

Yelp
Last night's mood: kamayan feast delivery for two ( fried chicken, garlic rice, eggplant salad, bbq pork, lumpiang rolls, fried tilapia, Yeah we polished it off right down to the banana leaf it was served on. Missing that Halo Halo tho . Love that they deliver and we can get a similar experience as in their resto. The food came hot and portions are great for 2-3 people. I love lumpiang (philipino egg rolls) so much that I ordered an extra batch. Would reorder there again.

Yelp
My general experience with Filipino food that serves "cafeteria" style food is they tend to be pretty hit or miss for my taste palate. Showing up after 6 PM you get to choose leftovers that were prepped much earlier and they'll heat it up for you in a microwave. I don't say this negatively but simply a matter of fact. Some things shouldn't be reheated, for example calamari. Not a very rewarding experience. Price is super cheap though so great if you want to fill up on a budget. Food is authentic but overall there's better food in the area so this is a very mediocre experience for me.

Yelp
Being really into Filipino food ( ehem New Jersey reppin over here) I was really anticipating Montreal's Filipino goodness! Cuisine de Manille was a top 3 search on my feed. A quick drive from downtown and parked right in front ( metered). A small modern look and greeted by the cashier/server. Decor was excellent... but the establishment is your typical order food already been cooked or your under the glass food or my way "the modern calinderia". Some looked fresh and some didn't. They offered combo meals which did not break the bank! The taste of the beef caldereta and kare kare was ok but sort of on the bland side. The stick bbq did not do justice. The Halo Halo was average. Too much jelly???

Yelp
This pinoy resto is always a go to whenever there is potluck at work. My coworkers enjoy their food especially the famous duo - pancit and lumpia

Yelp
I visited Montreal right after my trip from The Philippines and had to check out some of the options that were in Cote de Neiges, where there is a sizable Filipino community. Cuisine de Manille serves a variety of ready made Filipino dishes to choose cafeteria style. I ordered the sisig with garlic rice and fritters...after trying some really good sisig in The Philippines the comparison just ain't the same! It's not the best sisig...it's decently made but I can't complain because it's an intensive dish if wanted fresh. The highlight for me was the halo-halo...making me remember how I enjoyed eating this refreshing icey mixture of ube, coconut milk, jelly and bean during the very hot summer days there. It looks like the dessert is a popular option as I saw many others order it right after their main meal. The dessert is really big for one person to eat so it's better for sharing!

Yelp
if this place is in Vegas, it will close in 3 months. Vegas has got better food selection, friendlier and more accommodating service. This place ain't it

Yelp
The portions are huge and the service is excellent, you definitely have to try the national filipino desert Halo-Halo.

Yelp
I went to Cuisine de Manille today because I had never tried Filipino food and was curious. There is no menu, but you can just choose from the food that sits in a Bain marie at the counter. Most of the food on offer was pork, some beef. I picked one pork dish and one vegetable dish, with some rice. The pork dish had a nice sauce that was a little sweet. It contained a variety of pork "cuts", from belly to tripe. There was also pork skin in it and a piece that I think might have been ear. A little unusual for me but it was all very tasty. The vegetables had a bit of a weird smell - not like food gone bad, but I think it was one of the ingredients that had a particular smell. The dish tasted ok, but I couldn't finish it because of the smell. Service was fast and friendly, most customers seemed to be Filipino so I assume the food is probably authentic.
