The Most Peaceful Place in Mexico, According to Someone Who Lived There for 5 Years

"Quirky luxury hotels like Cuixmala continue to bring well-heeled (but decidedly dressed-down) guests for splashy villas, private pools, and a five-star escape." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Cuixmala

"Why book? At this Puerto Vallarta escape, you’re just as likely to see a celebrity sunbathing as you are to spot a zebra sipping unhurriedly from a trough of water; in either scenario, you'll be sun-kissed with hair that smells like saltwater and sunscreen, on your way to the bar for a deftly mixed margarita with views of the coastline while wild pigs roam idly by. Set the scene Drive the winding roads along mainland Mexico’s west coast, and you will come upon an unassuming outbuilding the color of a Creamsicle, set beside a pair of unremarkable gates. Moments later, as your vehicle makes the bumpy climb up the winding road leading into Cuixmala, you will wonder if you have the wrong address. (And a complete lack of cell phone service will make that impossible to check.) But soon you will come upon a fork in the road marked by a manicured patch of cacti, and from there, any number of roads to Cuixmala’s various lavish housing options. Pull up to yours to find a smattering of couples or families splayed out on pool chairs as though they’ve been given two of whatever knocked Sleeping Beauty out, and a coterie of friendly concierge ready to escort you to bliss.  If you’re staying in one of Cuixmala’s tucked-away Casitas, you may choose to spend much of the ensuing stay on your private porch, looking out over the lagoon. There you should allow the concert of birdsong and tree-flutters and buzzing, clicking insects to coax your shoulders down from around your ears, as you sip an Americano or something stronger. (Room service is readily available and fairly immediate; mini bars are also stocked with essentials, like tequila, and coffee grounds from Cuixmala’s sibling property’s mountain farm.) If you do feel the need to venture back out into the world, the resort offers excursion options aplenty. There is sea-side lunch at Cuixmala’s private beach, or a boat ride around Costa Alegre, or a tennis lesson, or a tour of Las Hortalizas, where a team of farmers grows much of the food you’ll consume onsite. Don’t leave before you pay a visit to the animal sanctuary, where several dozen zebras, eland, and crocodiles roam free.  The backstory The thousands of lolling, verdant acres that would become Cuixmala were originally purchased by notorious billionaire corporate raider Sir James Goldsmith. When he passed away in the late 1990s, his daughter Alix Marcaccini converted the sprawling property into a hotel. Today, Marcaccini owns both Cuixmala and its sibling property, Hacienda de San Antonio, an impeccably restored horse ranch and coffee farm three hours drive into the mountains of Colima.  The rooms Even excluding the enormous Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve it sits within, Cuixmala is expansive. The property comprises 40 rooms in total between Casa Cuixmala — a grand beachfront building reminiscent of Sintra’s Palácio da Pena, if the set designer for Glass Onion had a go at it — and a number of bungalows, casitas, and larger Villas spread throughout the property. Each guest room, as well as the numerous common spaces, strike a balance between severely smart and easily comfortable; expansive white walls are punctuated by arched windows and doors that offer views of the ocean that could be paintings; you can’t make it more than twenty feet without encountering a cozy padded white linen bench, beckoning you for a nap; design flourishes seem to take a cue from Moorish castles. Rooms start from $715 for a one bedroom casita. Food and drink The best dining at Cuixmala happens on its private beach Caleta Blanca, a 20-minute drive from the lodging; there, ceviche is fresh and sharp, fish tacos bring together crunchy carapace and suede-soft flour tortillas. On the hotel property, there are several options for dining, including Casa Gomez—which mainly serves guests of the Casitas—and La Loma, a more upscale restaurant at Casa Cuixmala. (La Loma can be reserved in advance if guests are staying on other parts of the property.) Cheese, which comes from Cuixmala’s sibling hotel’s Rancho Jabalí, is a high point. So too is the first meal of the day. The banana bread served with breakfast is soft and mildly sweet, and you’ll think about it for weeks after you depart. When in doubt, lean toward the produce; some 80 percent of the ingredients at Cuixmala come from the property’s own organic and biodynamic farms.  The spa Upon first glance at its grounds map, one might incorrectly conclude that there is no spa at Cuixmala. But the spa is simply decentralized; yoga and sound healing with sweeping views of the wild are on offer on one hilltop; in-room massages may be booked on short order.  The neighborhood/area While most visitors don’t stray from the rambling property and its private beaches, you could reach neighboring Careyes by car in a matter of minutes.  The service Service at Cuixmala manages to be equal parts low-key and comprehensive. At any moment, a fleet of friendly and knowledgeable staff members are available in person and by WhatsApp to answer questions, provide directions, arrange excursions, or craft that mythological mezcal cocktail that toes the line between bracingly acerbic and just sweet enough.  For families While the property isn’t child-proofed—there are quite a few sets of stairs, and scenic overlooks—children are welcome, and regularly visit Cuixmala.   Eco effort Cuixmala is located within a 36,000 acre dry tropical forest. It’s no coincidence that this is where James Goldsmith chose to headquarter his private vacation retreat; environmental conservation was one of his main causes, and before his death, he donated the surrounding wild land to the National Autonomous University of Mexico’s Chamela-Cuixmala Biosphere Reserve. Today, the Reserve is home to 1,200 species of plants, 270 species of birds, and more than 150 species of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The Cuixmala Ecological Foundation focuses on research, as well as the protection of species and ecological processes within the Reserve, and sustainable practices within the resort.  Accessibility  Unfortunately, most accommodations are not ADA compliant.  Anything left to mention The hotel staff treat the sunset as though it’s a mandatory part of a typical day (you wake up, you have something to eat, you get fresh air, you watch the sunset, and you sleep; everything else is optional). That’s because at Cuixmala, it is. The sky turns from Tiffany blue to a slowly rendered collection of sorbet-colored streaks before, almost all at once, going dark." - Ella Quittner

A Magical and Unforgettable Experience We stayed at Cuixmala and it was truly one of the most unique and enjoyable experiences we’ve ever had. The architecture is absolutely stunning – every detail is beautifully designed and perfectly integrated with the natural surroundings. The hospitality was exceptional; the staff were warm, attentive, and incredibly welcoming. The food was delicious, made with fresh, high-quality ingredients and so thoughtfully prepared. The nature within the reserve is something else – wild beaches, free-roaming animals, and a deep sense of peace and connection to the environment. I highly recommend the horseback riding experience alongside the zebras – it was such a magical and memorable moment. We also took the bikes and had an amazing tour of Miguel’s organic farm – it was charming, inspiring, and full of good energy. We truly enjoyed every minute. A place that stays with you long after you leave.

Magic! My experience was exceptional. You really do feel as though the main house and property is your private estate. The architecture, the views, the attention to detail and connection with sights, smells and sounds of the natural surroundings, it is truly stunning. Impeccably clean and safe, the serenity provided by Cuixmala is unmatched. The level service in every category was outstanding. Every person I encountered was friendly and seeking to enhance the guest experience. The food, fresh and flavorful from the biofarm to sea, excellent. I participated in all the nature activities offered during the time of year. I repeated several at different times a day, each provided different lighting, views and a unique experience in and of itself. The horses have a great disposition and it was a pleasure exploring the property in this manner. The sounds and sights on the lagoon, roaming zebra and antelope, the turtle release, a farm visit, I loved every moment. It appears all the wildlife is just as happy and relaxed as the guests and who would not be surrounding in such a beautiful setting. The beaches are worth the drive to spend the day relaxing in the hammocks, swimming or dining by the sea. I cannot recommend Cuixmala enough. A camera doesn’t do the colors and sights justice, I am so happy have had the opportunity to experience it. Thank you for giving me such a gift. I hope to return.

My wife and I stayed in the Master Suite in the main house….. and were completely blown away. This is a magical place and the most special/best place we’ve ever stayed. We travel frequently and have stayed at other luxury properties, but Cuixmala is in a league of its own. A former billionaire’s residence, we felt like billionaires while we were there. The accommodations are stunning, the service was next level (they find a way to yes for your requests), and the food was fresh/delicious. My wife loves seafood and she mentioned that the grilled octopus was the best she’s ever had. It’s not an extensive menu but everything we had was great, and extra points knowing that the majority was either sourced from the property, or their sister property a few hours away.||The horse riding experience blew us away as the horses are so well-cared for, and the route goes through where the zebras and antelopes lives; we rode a few feet away from a herd of zebras….. in Mexico! We also made the trek to their swimmable beach (about 40 min away by car) and it was worth it….. stunning in every sense of the word.||Cuixmala isn’t easy to get to…. But it’s so worth the trip. This isn’t like other properties/hotels as it feels more like you’re a guest of a private estate. It’s an immense property and is an eco-reserve, so know that there are mosquitoes everywhere, but just take precautions (repellant/long sleeves) and you’ll be fine. Only negative I can think of is they should offer a transportation service between restaurants and the beach, as the last thing I want to do when I’m on vacation is drive around. Other than that, turkey a paradise on earth and we can’t wait to come back.

We have been driving by Cuixmala for years and we knew we had to experience the property…it did not disappoint! The property is vast and eco-focused with bamboo fields and little to no use of plastic. The architecture of the main residence and our bungalow is breathtaking, like something we have not experienced in all of our travels. Everything is immaculate. The interior design is so perfect. We took the ATV tour to see crocodiles and birds galore. We saw the wildlife from the restaurant terrace that also shares sweeping views of the ocean. We took a boat out to whale watch and it may be the nicest cleanest boat we have ever been on. And yes we saw whales. The pool experience is a must. We spent a day at the beach that you have to drive 30 mins to but its worth it. I snorkeled and enjoyed cocktails and a yummy lunch. Oh and don’t miss the boutique!! Everyone should experience Cuixmala.

Before booking at Cuixmala one needs to:||1) Be comfortable with the risks of travelling to Jalisco and Colima (where the nearest airport is located)||2) Consider the hotel’s onerous cancellation policy, and||3) Be aware that this is a family owned hotel with an approach to guest relations which I have never had the misfortune to experience before.. ||I contacted the hotel about six weeks before arrival to cancel due to security concerns. My subsequent conversations with the hotel’s management left me very glad not to be staying there. ||In a country where there are so many lovely hotels with extremely friendly staff, their approach was quite a shock.

I have been thinking a lot about posting an honest review about our experience at Cuixmala but here it goes…my husband and I spent our honeymoon there during the month of March. Sadly, a number of personal articles, including about $600 in cash mysteriously disappeared during our stay. The earrings I wore for my wedding also went missing, obviously an article with much sentimental value. We brought up the missing cash immediately to the hotel’s attention and were met with an overall dismissive reaction, including placing the blame on us for not having placed valuables in the safe. While I know that is true, we trusted in the hotel’s reputation and never thought a place such as this would have theft issues. The staff said “they’d look into it” but never followed up with us again. Overall, our time at Cuixmala was overclouded by this experience.

How do you describe paradise, a unique and fabulous experience. The Casita was divine in every way. The main house is gobsmacking! The views, the service, the animals are all extraordinary. The food and drink are so well priced and the shop, no rip off here. The private beach is stunning. Everything was perfect. How some silly person can give this hotel a 1 is ridiculous, this is a 10 in every way. We will be back x
