Where to Find Regional Mexican Dishes in Houston | Eater Houston

"At Culichi Town I encountered Sinaloan-style sushi where rolls frequently rely on cheese and frying as much as seafood; the Guerrero Roll combines slices of beef and chicken, bacon crumbles, avocado, and cream cheese woven with sticky rice and encircled in a battered jacket." - Alice Levitt

Google
The seafood was tasty but very spicy. Drinks were flavorful but had too much chamoy and Tajín. For a Saturday brunch, the place was calm and casual. The location is pretty hidden away, so get ready to go off the beaten path. I hear this place is rocking on Friday and Saturday nights! Banda jams hard! The service is great. Everyone is very attentive and helpful.

Google
I’m not one to complain but sadly I just got my food and it had a worm in it. They offered to replace it but honestly my appetite was ruined. The food is usually okay here , I come on Wednesdays for the 2x1 special on the sushi but sadly I don’t know if I’ll be coming again after this. Service was ok

Matthew U.

Google
Food and service was great. Will definitely come again later on.

Daniel H.

Google
The food was incredible! Huge portions! The drinks were extremely tasty! The service was phenomenal! From the moment we walked in we were greeted and asked if it was our first time. Our server Sofia was super nice and quick! We even got a complementary chocolate cake for being our first time here. The manager also approached us and checked in! She mentioned they have a live band from Friday-Sunday evenings till closing. We will have to try that! For those who really enjoy authentic Mexican sushi this is the place!

Robert M.

Google
I went in because it was on the Upside app (offering a nice rebate) and it was close to where I was. I got there just after they opened and I was the only customer! But, a very nice young man who told me he was working hard on his English greeted me and got me a nice booth. I ordered the shrimp cocktail (the exotic one) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Although, it was not cheap, I brought much of it home and I believe my wife and I can both have plenty for dinner from the take home.

Google
Very good place to eat every choice was good seafood the sushi plates where very tasty.but you have to text your potnar while you there the loud music band plays right infront of your ears.

Google
It’s really weird. But hey, the Sushi wasn’t half bad; I got sushi with steak. The steak roll. The steak was really rare, I might’ve been able to switch out my option before it was made. I suggest getting medium, but the raw meat wasn’t half bad. I liked it. Again the steak was really rare, and it wasn’t bad. I also ordered wings for my sister. She couldn’t come with me but I got her something. The service is ok, do have to admit it’s a predominantly Spanish speaking area. The restaurant is a ‘Mexican twist with a very dark Japanese Vibe’. I’m sure it gets “lit” on the weekends but I wouldn’t know I came on a Tuesday night. So be advised. I still give the restaurant a 5 star review as I am not judging only criticizing. I had the feeling of pulling some powdery substance out, because of the music, but I didn’t have anything on me. If someone would’ve given me a ride I’m sure I would’ve drank. Do I recommend this restaurant, no. Not if you’re going to just have sushi. You must come prepared to drink and eat. So in those words you should totally try it. I can’t force you to try it out. Do leave my jokes aside. The sushi role was great. Come and speak Spanish and have fun. Come on a week end. They need to update the prices on the menu so waitresses and waiters get tipped more.

Julia G.

Google
Had to rate this place it is a very nice and big place, our waitress was very nice and friendly and the food tastes very delicious. This is my third time coming here so I definitely recommend this place out to anyone looking for lunch or dinner.

Yelp
Sadly I will NEVER be returning. I came for the 2x1 special on the sushi and when they brought out my Guerrero roll I saw something moving, I immediately took a video because I've NEVER experienced this. They didn't comp and still charged me for this. I lost ALL of my appetite. I was unable to eat anything else. Completely disgusting.
google avatar

Amy U.

Yelp
I've visited this location a few times. On Friday - Sunday they usually have a Banda/ live performances. It can get very loud to the point you can't hear the person next to you. They have a separate room in the back where the music isn't as loud and can be more intimate. They have daily specials. Taco Tuesday, and buy one get one free sushi roll Wednesday. We usually go on Wednesday and always order the lupillo roll and guamuchilito roll. The service is always good the staff is very attentive.

Yelp
My friends and I were in town for a baseball game. We heard that there was a culichu location in the Dallas area but found ourselves googling this place in Houston. As soon as you walk in (on the weekends for sure) you're hit in the face with live music from their in-house band. Our group asked to sit in the less loud room. It was the room by the other bar. The service was great. The guacamole was possibly the best I've ever had. The tacos were great. It was evident that they are homemade tortillas. Everything served to the group was very delicious and hot. If in the area, we will definitely come back.

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
Really good food but don't recommend to sit too close to the stage when the band plays cause it's really loud
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
Food was really good and drinks were as well. I'm a huge fan of micheladas so I'm picky with how they're made and loved it there. Loved the vibe and banda they had

Ricardo G.

Yelp
We got here "early" but we're the only ones in the restaurant for about 2 hours. The Banda was told to us they were going to play "in 20 mins" it's been 1.5 hrs and they just got more food. That ontop of it is it's expensive especially for the area. Do not recommend. Ambiance was non existent, nobody in the restaurant but us on a Friday night from 6:15-9. The Banda was sitting eating and drinking not playing, don't come here also it is THIRTY DOLLARS per song
google avatar

Ciara B.

Yelp
The prices on my receipt didn't match the menu at all... server took a really long time even though there were maybe only 2 tables there. the Hulk toastada is good, but the drink quality doesn't match the price. They have an accordion player, mariachi, and guitars players inside. Overall will not be revisiting
google avatar

Yelp
Saturday night visiting Houston came to check this place out. My husband , 6 month old, 2 friends and their 7yr old. They sat us the circle booths . The car seat fitted good on the couch. Which was good and didn't have to use a high chair. The band is good, it is extremely loud in there tho. Can't even talk with the person across from you. It's $30 to request a song and they sing it at your table. The food was good. I ordered a shrimp cocktail it was a little spicy and had a lot of lemon juice. My friends ordered the pound of boiled shrimp HOT and it was super spicy but delicious. Our waitress was really good too. For my preference, I wouldn't bring my kids. Maybe more of a date night or with friends. Also one more thing, I don't think their budget was big enough because the restrooms are extremely hot. No A/C . They need to update that.
google avatar

Claudia F.

Yelp
It's under construction so you won't get the full experience. The food was okay, we got some sushi. The portion was enough for two people. The waiter was very nice and patient. I would say to wait until the construction is done so that you can get the whole culichi experience
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Mexican take on sushi - not bad at all! Try the crab roll!! I'll def be back! Good quick service
google avatar

Paulo Cesar A.

Yelp
Don't get me wrong I eat spicy food But damn I was not able to eat my food because Because was too damn spicy The drinks was the only good thing here Besides service was pretty slow and the waiter only check in my table twice

Jacob V.

Yelp
The food was great, Fatima was definitely a great help. We got seated fast and great customer service!

M D.

Yelp
Do not judge a book by the cover! The seafood is great and so is the service! At first, I thought I had arrived at a nightclub at its off hours...big, dark and empty; and it seemed like the hostesses were surprised to see me there. After the awkward reception, I was kindly seated and assisted. I ordered a ceviche trio and a Taco Gobernador and they were plentiful, fresh and tasty! Not cheap, but worth every dollar. After I arrived more families started to arrive as well for lunch, so the place started to look more like a restaurant where you can take your children and less than a nightclub. Even though is not the nicest area in town, for me it was worth the detour and I will definitely be back to try the aguachiles!
google avatar

Armin F.

Yelp
Culichi Town is a great hidden gem, highly recommend checking out this Mexican seafood and sushi restaurant! The music is good and if you stay late there is dancing. Would be nice to check out again!
google avatar

Jaime F.

Yelp
This place is very well hidden or just very awkwardly located. The Seafood is good but its not Your traditional Mexican style seafood it is mostly sushi and appetizers type of food so if you love sushi and 11 o'clock and you must have it this place just be prepared to come into a loud Banda concert it is really loud so if you're not used to this type of thing you will probably not enjoy your night here but if you have a deaf wish for some ear damage you've come to right spot ...... Mexican sushi not bad at all. I would have never guessed this was such a thing. come try it once at least
google avatar

Jassir A.

Yelp
The place is spacious and clean. It has two separate areas so you have an option to be where the live banda is at( really loud), but the vibe and experience makes it worth. My waiter speed was average, service was good though I have no complains. I have to say everything is pricey even the smallest item on the menu $$ I really just liked their boiling shrimp it had a unique seasoning. I also ordered the ceviche with everything (fish, octopus ) it was okay I had better. The item I was really excited about was the Michelada, but it disappointed me. It was really watery i ordered two different beers ( pacifico and dos XX) to see if it was the selection of beer giving it an odd taste and they were both not enjoyable.

Yelp
Amazing. I don't say that often. All things considered. Amazing. A must see for every Houston Latino waiting to get out and have a good time.

Hillary H.

Yelp
La comida rica y el ambiente bueno pero solo para adultos porque la música tiende ser un poco alta
google avatar

Sindy G.

Yelp
The food is ok, my family and I just wanted to try something different. I've been to 3 more culichi towns in CA and this one in Houston is the best. Clean and great customer service. They had live band and my kids enjoyed it 4 and 14.

Yelp
I was very excited when I found out that this place opened, but after being there about 5 times not anymore. Pros Live Banda, Norteño, etc, good atmosphere, good on weekends. Bad: Sushi is not very good in MY opinion, Parking is terrible if you want to park in front you pay $5 + tip, otherwise you park on the street which is quite far and full of holes. Beer is overpriced, specially Micheladas. Service is terrible, last Saturday (30-June) we had paid for everything but decided to stay a bit and we asked a boss boy for 3 beers, he said I'm not your server, I'll get your server (he didn't) after 15 mins our server passed by but did not stop with us he said be right back, finally I told him please 3 beers, 20 mins passed and even after reminding him he did not get our beers so we walked out. I asked the lady in front to speak with the manager on duty, she handed me a card and told me to call tonorrow the general manager. Very dissappointing. Unless you want to hear live Banda, music, save your money. So many better places that will appreciate you as a customer. I have been to Culichi town restaurants in California and other locations, no complant at other locations.
google avatar

Aleksandar R.

Yelp
My God what a great place! Such a great energy, so full of life! I'm from Serbia, and trumpets are our national instrument, so I like that style. If you want to go to a quiet place - forget it. It will be loud, crowdy, you will need to learn how to simply let the rhythm drives you. If you have never been to such a place, still give it a try and before criticizing, think about the concept first. I felt like home and Mexicans are amazing people if you understand their philosophy of life.

Margarita I.

Yelp
Everything is expensive they tell you what price and charge a different one.. a song is 30 dollars ridiculous..: food is not so good..
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
The area was sort of sketchy, but I ended up really enjoying my meal and the live banda music! Sadly my husband couldn't eat more than half of the menu due to his allergy and the salmon he ordered was not anything special. We did ask for our ceviche to be made with fish rather than shrimp and they were nice to fulfill our request. My favorite item was the ceviche with hot Cheetos! (Why didn't I ever think of this!) Their sushi is good and you get a big helping, but I've had better. This restaurant is huge so it's not really crowded inside even though it was super busy on a Friday night and service was not bad! It's really loud inside from all the chatter and music (I don't mind it, but just a fair warning).
google avatar

Samuel B.

Yelp
Delicious traditional sinaloa style seafood as well as some modernized choices! Location is clean and very neat. Big group friendly, booths comfortably sit 6 but can squeeze up to 8. Live music in the evenings on weekends but also has a separate section for a calmer setting. Would recommend for nightlife eating!

Yelp
This place is so magical! My (Mexican) boyfriend and I randomly found this place on our drive back from the airport, and we have been infatuated with this place ever since. Food, drinks, ambiance, live music...everything feels just right. They have a large menu of seafood and sushi (Sinaloa style), all of which are reasonably priced for quantity and quality. There is indoor seating with live band (mariachi, banda, norteño...) & dancing, as well patio seating with an outdoor bar. They even have a cute little "beach" area, where you can enjoy your margaritas and micheladas with beach umbrellas and sand under your feet. Definitely recommend!
google avatar

Evelia T.

Yelp
The food is excellent! This restaurant is a great addition to the northside where sushi restaurants are scarce. The interesting thing about this predominantly seafood restaurant is that everything is prepared "Sinaloa" style....which I found out is delicious! I've ordered several stuff from the menu and everything has been great! I recommend the Ceviche Petra...it has shrimp, mango and other yummy ingredients. You must try their sushi! It won't disappoint. I hear their micheladas are very popular, I haven't tried one yet. The mango margarita was refreshing. Overall this is a fun restaurant with quality seafood that's definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Raquel A.

Yelp
First time and it was awesome! Mango michelada and shrimp tacos were great. The waitress were very attentive and the live music was popping we also got the 5 quesos sushi roll
google avatar

Lupe G.

Yelp
Came here with my family, party of 10 on a Sunday around 2pm. It was a big disappointment as we were looking forward to having good seafood. We ordered the following: aguachiles verdes, the hulk, fried fish, culichitown molcajete, taco el gobernador. The only good dishes were the tacos, molcajete, and fried fish. The aguachiles and the hulk were the worst aguachiles I've had. The lime juice was terrible; the limes they used were not good. Did they not taste it before putting the dish out to their customers? Very disappointed. The good 1. Taco el gobernador, molcajete dishes were good. The bad 1. Service was terrible. Rarely did our waitress check on us. My husband asked a hostess for water and she ignored him. Eye contact made, no acknowledgement nor a word. 3. Location is surrounded by what looks like the hood. Felt a bit worried as we were closer to the location. Definitely not satisfied with our dining experience. Will not be coming here again.
google avatar

Annette F.

Yelp
NOT GOOD! OVERPRICED! The micheladas are DISGUSTING and $8.95 ea My husband and I took 1 sip of our micheladas and both said the same thing "ugh, this is gross!" Too much Worcestershire sauce and not enough lime. They were so bitter, I had to ask for water to get that taste out of my mouth and be able to finish my meal. The HULK TOSTADA = PURO CHILE It is raw shrimp "cooked" in lime juice with cucumber and salsa verde I got a plate of diced cucumber with pieces of raw shrimp, they were gray. They needed to marinate in the lime juice longer to cook. And a ton of green salsa. The cucumber overpowered the whole dish, it was hard to find the shrimp pieces. It was disappointing not to have Whole shrimps The salsa was ridiculously spicy. It was raw jalapeño blended with cilantro. I like spicy salsa, but this was crazy The only thing I liked was the fish tacos Fried fish with cabbage and a drizzle of chipotle sauce I would give the tacos 3 stars They only offer battered fried fish, which is too oily for my taste. I would prefer grilled fish. Our bill was $55 for 2 nasty micheladas 2 fish tacos 2 tostadas NEVER AGAIN!
google avatar

Andrea F.

Yelp
Went to try out the place, it's okay if you are about the night life. I went on my lunch break with some co workers, and the sushi was really bland with not a lot of flavor. Not to mention it was all deep fried. Fried as In in like rodeo style sushi. I'm open to new things but this was not my cup of tea. The place is nice, they have nice servers. :)
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
Awesome atmosphere, food , drinks are on point. Sushi with a twist , great environment to enjoy an evening out. Definitely recommend to everyone Cheers!!
google avatar

Cristiana A.

Yelp
I'm sure the ambient would of been really nice if it wasn't during the pandemic. They have a stage set up in front for live music and really nice seating. I ordered ceviche and it was very tasty, although, I wish they would be so cheap on the seafood. I would of loved it if they would of put in more seafood especially because they are very expensive. But, the taste of the ceviche was great. I would of given them a 5/5 if they have just put a lot more seafood.
google avatar

Gisell G.

Yelp
Fantastic place to eat! Great food and great sushi!! This is obviously sushi customized to the Mexican palette. Please do not come here if you are not CULTURED. This place has a live BANDA and a lot of HISPANIC people. It is a great please to come and eat great quality food with your family. Service is fantastic !
google avatar

Karla P.

Yelp
Tonight was my first time here. The place is decent. Very nice and clean(for that part of town anyway). The margaritas were amazing! We had the shrimp empanadas as appetizer and they were delicious(my 10 year old ate half the order himself!) We also had the Marisqueada which was good in flavor but the rice was bland. I had the Tempura roll which was pretty good. I was however very disappointed with the Camarones al mojo de ajo. They tasted frozen and completely fell apart when trying to peel them. They have live Banda on the weekends which was pretty cool(just a little too loud for my taste) other than that the place is ok. I would definitely come back for drinks and appetizers.

Ivonne P.

Yelp
Probably the last time I come here. My fiancé and i drove a good two hours for what we thought was good sea food. We were very disappointed. The micheladas were overpriced and not worth it. We had to call our server to come to us. Our food was extremely cold. My hulk plate was very raw. The only good thing we got was the sushi which I rate it a 2 stars out of 5. Will not be coming again, terrible service and horrible parking.
google avatar

Ericka F.

Yelp
I haven't reviewed in a while but I feel I must .... This has nothing to do with customer service so the rating is based purely on the food. The cocktail had 0 cocktail sauce?!?! Hmmm. Nuff said.... but! the roll had really soggy mushy rice that no self respecting sushi chef would use and EVERY single roll had cream cheese and avocado- which it's a Latin fusion place so I get it but that's a sign of inadequate skill and creativity to pair ingredients. The thing about Latin Asian fusion is that you have to be able to cook not just one but two types well so if you can do neither .. well two wrongs don't make a right. There is like 50 types of "variations" for roll and ceviche which c'mon ... But the one bright spot may be the hot bitz (the name almost told me no but me being a sucker for thick cut bacon) which were a type of Chile wrapped in bacon cooked well and covered in a little bit of a sweet sauce with cheese in the middle. I should've stopped there :( The next best thing was the saltines I filled up on. That being said about the food, im sure it's a good place to get a few drinks on and hear some live music. I encourage the owners to take a trip to El Pacifico restaurant. The Latin Asian food is exemplary, its worth every penny, it's fresh and it's got a great music and drink scene. Please go. The waitress was nice as hell but when asked what was good her face said it all. Her expression was all the honesty we needed but we gave it the old college try anyway. Grade: F (for the food)
google avatar

Ana S.

Yelp
This was my first time visiting this place. The atmosphere is very nice, the live music is great. We order a martini and it was horrible I didn't like it so we ordered something else. When the manager came over we told him that we didn't like it. He asked what was wrong, told him we didn't like it, he continued to ask what was wrong with it, the taste was horrible. When the waitress brought the check we were charged for it even though we didn't drink it. The manager said that if he took it off the waitress was going to pay for it. If a customer doesn't like a drink you can't charge them for it. The waitress was great but the manager Raul very rude.
google avatar

Nancy H.

Yelp
They have lots of these in California, this one lived up to the California locations. The seafood tostadas and micheladas are worth the drive for us. PSA- they have a live band so bring cash and leave your babies at home. I'm not too crazy about mayonnaise in my seafood or sushi but my hubby loved it.

Lesley L.

Yelp
Food is soooo good! Not the best customer service, it always seems to take a while to get your food. The live music there is too loud you can't have a conversation unless you sit in the back area. I would have given it a 5 if the service was better! We recommend the aguachiles, there is an appetizer of 3 different ones which is so good! Also you can't go wrong with the octopus or fish tacos. My favorite sushi there is the Kanikama roll!
google avatar

Sotero R.

Yelp
It was first time at culichi , was recommend but now I will never go here again! My empanadas came with shrimp and unexpected hairs! The sushi was spoiled and Had a awful smell like it was left out. When I tell the manager what I have found in my empanadas and my sushi rolls didn't meet to par I was told there was nothing I can do and once I touch the food I have to pay ! Do Not Come Here ! Food is way over priced and the quality does not meet what you pay for !
google avatar

Elizabeth B.

Yelp
I had a horrible experience there the prices on the menu were not the same prices in The actual restaurant. The waitress Alexander did not have good customer service at all he was all over the place he disappeared for 30 minutes at a time, granted I was the only customer in there besides the three Hispanic guys at the bar. when I was finally ready to check out he gave me my receipt and the prices were not the same as the menu, ex. I was charged $17.99 for drink when on the menu it said $15 after asking to speak with the manager and no one ever showing up and waiting for ANOTHER 30 minutes I walk up to the bar he says the cashier was the only one that could ring me out and she was busy counting down a drawer I am very disappointed in this restaurant I had higher expectations.
google avatar

Laura Z.

Yelp
Poor customer service requested a few items over 6 times to be specific until I had to get another waiter's attention to get refill on water and soda. Prices on food to expensive for the quality and flavor of food. I expected more from this place but TOTALLY disappointed on Food, Price and Quality. If you are used to service and food with actual flavor the do not come to this place.
google avatar

Leah S.

Yelp
went in on a weekday & it was chill. the food is amazing. the service was great as well our waitress kept checking up on us. love the "tablita" shots. great place to our to eat & drink.
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Well I'm not a person to write reviews but mf this place sucks drove 1:30 min to get here wanted to have a nice time but hell no !!! Service sucks and food !! Don't waste your time going here !!! I wouldn't even give them 1 star
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Was looking for a somewhat decent place to grab dinner relatively close to the Spring Hill suites by the airport and I happened across this place. I have to say I was disappointed. I was the only one in the restaurant. Both the service and the food we're mediocre at best.
google avatar

Pavel V.

Yelp
Very sh1t i'd rather eat sushi from an HEB frozen food section Service is very trash, i could have found anne frank before they gave me my food, Tacos we're loaded with sauce, my insides are paying the price later. They want 30 dollars for dish that looks like it was popped in the microwave and brought out, I never knew i had kids with helmets serving me, since they were so sped.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
Hands down the best michelada I've had since my trip to Mexico. Sweet, sour, spicy all in one with shrimp! Mmmmm. the food on the other hand was not good in any form. I ordered garlic shrimp and there was raw diced garlic all over it. I'm a garlic fan but I'm not into bitting raw garlic through my whole meal. It's over powering. We went around 5 and there was not a soul around. Sundays they have live music so it's more packed. I will try the food again next time and see if it got any better. If you want a place to have with your group and drink this is it. To eat maybe not so much. Service was okay despite we were the only ones there

Jose G.

Yelp
My friend told me about Culichi Town and so we decided to make it a Sunday funday type of deal. Immediately when I walked into the restaurant, I was highly impressed on the atmosphere and looks of the place. The vibe given off was good and we were seated right away. There was a live band that started playing at 9 and it lasted till closing time which is 12 AM. The band started off strong but then started falling off. It seemed they were using the same rhythm and beats to play every song they was asked for. I out of everything we ordered, (food & drinks), it was all pretty good. I had horchata and some empanadas and the hot Cheeto ceviche. Pretty good flavor and drinks. Everything was well decorated. At the end of the night, (roughly 4 hours there), we had a combined tab that was $450. That was for food, buckets of beer, and shots. I would of given them a higher rating because I really did enjoy myself and the company I was with but the service was slow. My waitress would check on us every 20-25 minutes which I completely hate with a passion. I would of ordered a lot more things, resulting in a higher tab. But, my friends and I do plan on coming back next week for Sunday funday and bringing more friends too. Hopefully better service.

Rosy A.

Yelp
Reason for 2-star rating: Customer service and hospitality was below average. Took about 15 minutes to get seated in a near-empty restaurant. I had to hunt someone down 2 times to be seated. Food: The food I had was good. I had a pescado zarandeado. I would like to come back and try the sushi, as they have a huge variety of sushi. I liked their strawberry lemonade, and it was huge. Environment: This is NOT a place to go if you do not like loud live music. Although they do have separate seating away from the noise, it is still difficult to have a conversation with the people you are dining with. Very spacious restaurant, perfect for parties. I 100% believe that hospitality makes or breaks an experience at any place you go to, and unfortunately it broke my experience at CulichiTown.
