Nevada’s Culinary Workers Union Can Propel a Presidential Candidate to Victory | Eater

"A powerful statewide hospitality union representing roughly 60,000 hotel and food-service workers, this organization has turned precarious shift work into stable middle-class careers through higher wages, a pension fund, apprenticeship-style training (a culinary academy that moves low-paid workers into higher-paid roles), and programs that help members gain citizenship or buy a first home. Its membership is highly diverse—workers from 178 countries who speak over 40 languages, with many women of color in leadership—and it relies on intensive rank-and-file organizing that trains members as field operatives who can take months off to canvass. Politically, the union is a coveted endorsement because members will canvass and mobilize on a candidate’s behalf; the group also hosts early-voting sites and community-centered caucus operations. Its robust, employer-funded health benefits are central to members’ priorities and were the flashpoint in a public dispute over national Medicare-for-All proposals; leadership ultimately declined to endorse a 2020 primary candidate and instead focused on phone-banking and encouraging members to decide for themselves." - Meghan McCarron

Inside Tom Steyer’s Nevada Caucus Taco Party | Eater

"A 60,000-member union hall that serves as a major power in Nevada politics, this early-voting site is majority Latino and represents immigrant workers from more than 170 countries. It is known for its ability to shape elections, and during early voting it functioned as a campaign stop where members encountered a candidate, received free tacos and posed for photos." - Meghan McCarron

Alex Castillo has me left feeling abandoned, he doesn’t call or text back any of the shop stewards. What’s the whole point of grievances when you won’t even be acknowledged? I thought belonging to a union protected me from discrimination against my medical history, race, religion etc. I usually wouldn’t put a negative review on my own union, something has to be done, we are people, with families, our children depend on us.

They so long to take care a case we did a complain 3 months ago the still not even said anything if they will help. I can imagine if is an urgent situation you can be dead already when they can even start it with your case 🥲I hope they can have some more efficient people at this place.

Wanda; a manager was very mean, talks over you, and raises her voice. She does not give you a chance to speak nor does she listen. Security could relax a bit too. Its not a courtroom. Security is probably present because of the way the employees treat people.

Great customer service but medical care checking on hospitals & bad physicians is still war against blk minority women no followup or truthful admissions some1 else tell your story so we can talk.

I’m so sorry for what you all are going through at Virgin hotel…. But this nonsense with the music has got to stop. I’m either getting woke out my sleep or can’t go to sleep because your workers have NO consideration for people who live in the area. There are quiet times. Why can’t they follow those hours?! I’m pregnant and lucky if I get 3 hours of sleep because of you all.

Being in the culinary has afforded me to be able to take care of my family of four, financially as well as take great care of our medical needs!!! I'm forever a loyal member!!!

This union never responded to a single message of mine, not one. I had multiple messages go unanswered with proof, and they should've been easy ones to get answered, like what are my contract details? I asked for a copy of it and never heard back. I also asked why we're so shortstaffed, overworked, and underpaid, without a new contract for years, and that question went unanswered too. The company I worked for never seemed to be hiring enough with the constant turnover rate, and the union doesn't seem to want to help or care in any way. But they still wanted their union dues every month and to continue to spam us with messages about voting for candidates they want you to choose. I eventually just quit the job because I felt I had too with that work environment. I was constantly shortstaffed (most nights it was just 1 or 2 people closing.) and not being paid correctly all the time. It was never going to change or get any real help.
