10 Chicken-and-Jojo Champs in Portland

"Like Alberta Market — and less than a mile west on the same street — Cullen’s Corner is also a convenience store with a strong fried chicken and jojos game, popular with Jefferson High School students and neighborhood regulars. Fair warning: if hitting this spot during off-peak hours, the heated food case might be woefully bare. With most of the hot food, including corn dogs and taquitos, being a bonafide bargain, this makes sense." - Krista Garcia

Yelp
The best family run corner store in NE Portand. Period. Mr. Lee and his family have quietly helped so many kids/adults over the years. This store helps so many people in the NE neighborhood and Jefferson High School. And the hot bar food is on point. The pricing is on point. And they carry all the things you need in a pinch. Milk, butter, produce, batteries, cold medicine, gloves, beanies, you name it. You can not find a better run corner store or a better family owned business in NE Portland. Beyond grateful for this place.

Yelp
Ya know, I left a review on here when I first moved to the neighborhood and it wasn't the greatest... and reminder for me to not judge a book even by the first few pages--so I'm updating my review. I've known Mr. Lee for 3 years now, and I could not be more grateful to have a person like him in the neighborhood. He goes out of his way to take care of his customers and friends, and that says a lot about his character. My parents and brother have even met him and they love knowing I have someone like him in the neighborhood since they live across the country. He's like family to me! He's always got treats for the doggos, stocked up on polar and la croix and all the necessities, and is generally just a great guy to see every week. P.S. If you haven't had one of the spring rolls, eat one of the spring rolls.

Yelp
I believe all of the reviews saying Mr. Lee is very nice because that is the beauty of individual experience HOWEVER he just cussed me out because I wouldn't commit to not parking in front of his store if I wasn't going to shop there! I can't remember a time anything similar has happened to me before :( Street parking has nothing to do with the businesses past the sidewalk so for him to act the way he did is pretty ludicrous.

Yelp
This is the best market in Portland. Mr Lee is the nicest man. Will always greet you with a smile. They have everything you could ever need. Wonderful place. Considering moving to this neighborhood because of this market.

Yelp
This little mom and pop convenience store is a hidden gem for some fried chicken that won't break the bank. I tried a couple of their wings and was amazed at both the taste and crispiness of the chicken. The flavor was just right and it was not greasy. Not only can you get your fried chicken fix, but because it's a convenience store, you can pick your wife selection of beverages.

Yelp
It's a mini mart- the people who work there are really nice and they're open late. I'm really glad to have it within walking distance of my house and they are willing to stock items that I ask for.

Yelp
Cullen's corner is an amazing family owned convenience store. I moved here from Colorado, and after meeting Lee and his family, I quickly realized how fortunate I am to have this hidden gem in my neighborhood. The snacks are great and the beer is affordable. Try some spring rolls!

Yelp
Great little neighborhood market. My boyfriend and I were visiting and staying nearby. We stopped by this store a couple of times - they carry a nice selection of local beers & ciders which we enjoyed (and had to take some home with us!) Lee was super helpful and friendly. He gave us some good suggestions of things to do/see during our visit. We will definitely be back to Portland, and when we do we will come by here again as well :)

Yelp
Convenient, Friendly & I recommend this corner store to everyone in the neighborhood!

Yelp
I love the business here! The owner's are so compassionate and I always feel so safe coming in to this little corner store. Also, their Jojo's are the best around and the fried chicken is pretty darn good. I love that everyone knows my name, and always the next person in line and to come in the store. By far, the best neighborhood convenience market in Portland, hands down.

Yelp
Quick, easy, lady was helpful when I asked prices of the different sized Darigold milk. Took off one star because it's a little pricey.

Yelp
My favorite corner store! Everyone who works there is always so friendly (especially Lee). They always have what I need

Yelp
The owner, Lee, is an absolute gem! I recently moved nearby, started coming here mostly for drinks and staple items. Each time Lee took the time to ask me about my day and chat about life in general. Now he is always happy to see me. You won't find the freshest produce or organic dairy, but please consider being a patron of this store for staple items! If you can't find something, ask-- he probably has it hiding somewhere. I've also heard the Jojos, fried chicken, etc. in the case are good but haven't tried them myself yet. Also, he appreciates when you use cash instead of card, as do most small businesses. :)

Yelp
I grew up in the neighborhood and have many fond memories of going to the "corner store" with my friends and siblings. They have always had all the great snacks, treats and the best pizza pockets! I still visit about weekly with my own children (while visiting with my parents).

Yelp
In America we have this first world luxury of having mini marts or convenience stores on every corner for our beer runs of munchie cave ins. They sorta mesh together into a network of anonymous marts that we really don't think that much about when we grab and go. And that's alright, why should something so convenient take much thought? This mini mart is an exception. Cullen's Corner has soul to it. The man who runs this shop is exceptionally nice. He greets people when they walk in with a smile. I'm usually just buying a 40 oz. but despite that we chat about the news or how the day was. I really like this shop so if you live in the neighborhood ditch that plaid pantry and come over here. He even has fresh produce so that if you're having a little party and forgot lime for your guac, you're saved if you visit Cullens. You leave feeling dignified even with your bag full of Laffy Taffy's/Malt Liquors.

Yelp
Best corner store ever. They have everything you would ever go into a corner store for and the owners are the cutest, nicest, sweetest.

Yelp
Its just a standard mom&pop mini mart. Its a little on the dirty side for me, but it was a reflection of the neighborhood. Had everything we wanted and they even let a guy park his bike inside no problem although space was limited.

Yelp
Basically like a plaid pantry but better. Go out of your way for this place. The owners are so nice. Five stars worth of nice. Also their Jo-Jo's are good and I hear the fried chicken is too. I'm not into chicken but judging by the amount of bones littered in the vicinity of this little market I'd say there are a lot of fans. I only live a few blocks away so I became a regular out of convenience but I have to say I would walk or ride farther to skip a plaid pantry or 7-11 in favor of this place. In recent shopping experiences my friends and I were able to pick up a do-rag, cap guns, water balloons and beers. One stop shopping at it's best. It's not new seasons or whole foods but it's not pretending to be either.

Yelp
For what this place is, it deserves 5 stars. Its a great neighborhood mart and it has everything one could want and more in a convenience store. Good selection of beer, wine, even an impressive selection of groceries. Always friendly service too! My business will always go here first. Great place.

Yelp
Very mom and pop corner store that has what you would expect from a corner store. Good place to grab some munchies before heading home or the hotel. Very good customer service and prices are reasonable. I love chips and pop.

Yelp
It was open when I needed Ben & Jerry's. Doesn't get any better as far as I'm concerned. Oh wait, yes it does: Its right around the corner so I don't even have to get in the car. Genius.
