Meet Four Craft Chocolate Makers Decolonizing the Industry | Eater

"Born from Mexican family traditions—notably a grandmother's champurrado—this Denver shop centers drinking chocolate and culturally resonant flavors made with traditional techniques (toasting cacao on a comal, grinding on a metate, whisking with a molinillo). It intentionally creates a non-intimidating, bilingual community space in Westwood with welcoming design, hands-on classes, and a hiring focus on local women and youth. Rather than emulating Eurocentric bar-focused elites, the business prioritizes accessibility, community education about origin and processing, and economic empowerment for its neighborhood." - Jinji Fraser

Great place for authentic ethical and yummy chocolate! Drinking chocolate and bars in unique flavors. Nice patio and place to hang and support a great local business--they make the chocolate on site!

I recently visited Cultura Craft Chocolate, a delightful craft chocolate and coffee shop nestled in our changing neighborhood. The hot chocolate is a standout, rich and indulgent, while the coffee is expertly brewed to perfection. The selection of chocolate bars is impressive, offering a diverse range of flavors. The customer service at Cultura Craft Chocolate is top-notch; the staff is knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about their products. The warm and inviting atmosphere makes it an ideal spot for both work and relaxation. The cozy ambiance is complemented by the subtle aroma of freshly brewed coffee. However, it's worth noting that some negative comments have emerged, possibly stemming from the ongoing gentrification in the neighborhood. It's essential to appreciate the positive aspects of a business like Cultura Craft Chocolate, which not only contributes to the local economy but also to the community and provides a welcoming space for diverse communities to connect over a shared love for quality coffee and chocolate.

What a hidden jewel! The atole, hot chocolate with ground corn, was new to me, and awesome. The various hot and cold chocolate drinks were also wonderful. Super friendly and helpful staff. Just the aroma in the shop is heavenly. If you're a chocolate lover it's worth a special visit. Fascinating to learn about the importance of chocolate in Mexican culinary culture.

Google
Cultura is a landmark small business in southwest Denver that serves up world class craft chocolate. They nail it on decor and atmosphere with an array of 70% dark chocolates that I can never pass up!

It was a very cold wintry day and we were craving chilly chocolate. This place had the real deal. We also tried the Haitian sipping chocolate - yum. Such a pleasant unexpected find - will definitely go back to try all the other fascinating items on the menu!

Not really a friendly place by what ive seen. I tried to visit and go out of my way to visit here and make it a staple of my chocolate journey. And I'm a chocolate nerd and a half. Yall have such good chocolate bar expressions. But I can't ignore how poor it seemed I was treated. I seemed like the lowest priority of anyone in there no matter what. Your employee took another employees order who was behind me litteraly over my head since I'm short. while I was sitting at the counter to buy corn flour patiently. I was here to figure out all of your expressions and spend alot of money. But yall had to not value me as a person. I was even estatic to see Cimarron and vida as your cooking liquors. Also had a very underdone cornbread ( they seemed like they had racist behavior) I was the only white person in store at the time. All the rest appeared to be of mexican heritage

Yelp
Incredible chocolate. Takes me back to Oaxaca. A true gem we're incredibly lucky to have in Denver.

Yelp
Complete garbage service. I just wanted to spread they seem to even have a racist streak in store. All the Mexican people were treated like family. I was litteraly treated like trash cause I was white it seemed.

Yelp
Received this as a gift from my company's people team. Love the size and the details on the packaging. Perfectly dark and creamy. Such a cute gift idea. Would love to send this with a card in the mail. Minimal ingredients.

Yelp
As I approached the chocolate shop, It was obvious that this was going to be a fun little experience. Easy to find location. *Added Bonus* Parking is simple and accessible, for now, until everyone else finds out about this adorable little place. Cultura Chocolate is such a magically cute little shop. When I walked in I was greeted by the chocolate maker herself, she smiled brightly behind the mask and waved. A lovely greeting for such a happy little place. Authentic decor, bright colors, glass display cases, and modern shelving display the beautifully packaged products that line the tiny little shop. It felt like we were meant to be there. *Do Not let the size of this shop fool you, there is so much magic in this awesome little place. From Chocolate bars, to a variety of coffee beverages, and savory options. You will absolutely not be disappointed* It's enchanting I bought an authentic Horchata, it was deliciously cold, smooth, sweet, and creamy, with a pinch of cinnamon. It was a great way to start a beautiful warm spring morning. Sadly I was rushed for time, but managed to get a few more items.. I'm excited that I was able to buy a couple of packs of chocolate covered mango, a chocolate dipped pastry, and Yoli soda. The chocolate items were cleanly and lovingly packaged and looks absolutely delicious. My buddy bought a few dark chocolate bars. The most important thing is we both left with big smiles! Thanks Cultura!! I've been dreaming about visiting you for 3 weeks now and you've met every one of my expectations and more!

Yelp
I've been wanting to try out this place as I've read so many great reviews. My trip to California was coming up so I wanted to get some local flavors to bring as gifts. This was the perfect opportunity! I purchased 3 full 'box' minis (12 chocolate minis/box), which not only do you get a discount for purchasing a 'box' of 12, you also get a discount for purchasing in-store as opposed to ordering online. Boxes online for shipment, the flavors are chosen for you, whereas in the store, you get to pick whichever flavors you want, which was great! I wanted to try every single bar they had for myself so one of the 'boxes' are staying at my house so we can sample them and figure out which one we like. They are not really 'boxes', you just pick out which 12 (or in this case, 36) you want and they put it in a bag for you to take home. The store itself had such a great feel, other goodies and presents to buy as well as drinks and chocolate mixes. We've had the Guatemala bar as well as the Rum & Raisin and both are very rich and decadent, everything chocolate should be! One small piece is enough to hold you over but then the you find yourself craving for more. This chocolate is worth the hype. I'm excited to give these as gifts (plan to wrap a stack of three with a pretty bow) and if I have any mini bars left over.. hey more for me!

Yelp
My first time having atole and it was amazing - especially the champurrado. Amazing chocolate, too! The mint chocolate blew my mind. The area itself is covered in beautiful art. Awesome place to visit.

Yelp
Omg I just had their single origin Guatemala chocolate bar and I swear this is the best chocolate I've had in my life. It's simple and the citrus, hibiscus, and raisin flavors just roll off your tongue in that order! Wow you need this.

Yelp
This place was horrible if you expect authentic Mexican food and chocolates it's not the spot! The service took way to long the menu was wayyyyy out of what they said they had. I DO NOT RECOMMEND! I've had way better it's over priced and small portions. The large is smaller than the Starbucks small! expected more from here since it's supposedly autentica!

Jacquie G.

Yelp
I'm a big fan, the owner is very hospitable. I've been ordering all the things from them for the past 6-7 months. The chocolate here is what you've been looking for, seriously. You have to try the chocolate covered mangoes. Also, this is one of the only places I know of who makes their own in house corn masa- it tastes just like the kind I grew up with in Mexico. This is a rare find! I also need to give them props for helping to bring this community together during COVID- they have hosted and brought other vendors for the community to enjoy- this says so much about their character and willingness to really embody what community is supposed to look like.

Yelp
Incredible chocolate, coffees & alotes. Only wish they were open more hours, they would be my daily coffee stop.

Yelp
On a recommendation from a client, I drove out of my way to try this place. Got here they were closing up, before the time they said they were closing... the woman at the door was rude Too bad for them for being rude Lost my $ and Any potential referral Brava

Yelp
What a find! The dark sipping chocolate is so delicious I can't wait to go back to have it again! Everything about this place is great- the chocolate, the people, the vibe, the aroma! And it's absolutely perfect that it's across the street from Kahlos!

Yelp
I buy their chocolate at every craft mart/holiday market/trendy Denver event that I see them at, and finally I can go stock up any time I want! This location is their Factory and Cafe. I attended the soft opening because I couldn't wait a single day to check this place out. Inside is clean and beautiful and lots of chocolate rows with tubs full of cocoa nibs. I love the beautiful colorful mural by the front door and I can't wait to give their chocolate as a gift for everyone for years to come. Their Mexican drinking chocolate is my go to for when I'm craving something sinful. It keeps me from crushing a bag of chocolate candy and it tastes better too.

Yelp
AMAZING café that puts a lot of hard work into the community of Westwood. The Cultura team is so amazing and the food and drinks they provide are all incredible and authentic to our Mexican and indigenous roots. We love Cultura Chocolate and support everything they do!

Yelp
This place is great. We made a special trip to check it out and we were not disappointed. Plan to go and get a drink and enjoy your chocolate on the patio area outside. Cool setting and great chocolate. They seem to care about what they do and it shows.
