Culture Grub - Review - London - The Infatuation

"Sometimes a restaurant weaves its way into your heart for eternity. For full disclosure, you should know that this tiny Chinese restaurant is one of those places for us due to its close proximity to our former student halls. Tears were shed here, kisses we thoroughly regret happened outside, and biblical hangovers were nursed at the back table over a quarter crispy duck with pancakes. It’s very much a casual affair and permanently packed with local students, but when it comes to a quickfire meal in the area involving seaweed, crispy duck, and their winning beef with black bean sauce, it’s perfect. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Absolutely amazing. Authentic. Great service- very friendly people. Making you feel so comfortable even if you eat alone. Will definitely recommend to everyone. The salt and chilli squid to die for! And just all experience 5*! Glad I have discovered this little cute restaurant

Went here for a quick lunch (my second time) - really convenient and good taste as well. Plenty of seats available, quite decent environment inside (I was a little late, probably missed the lunch peak time). 😁

Decent, small Chinese diner and my favourite local. Very well priced. Service is great. I would recommend it to anyone local to the area.

Don't let the interesting name steer you wrong. This is definitely Asian food culture! We had great service from our server, Kevin. The food literally came out from the kitchen in 5 minutes. Wonderfully fresh and authentic. One dish we tried was the chicken chow mien. Noodles were soft. Onions cooked with a perfect crunch, and the sauce complimented the chicken well. The second dish was spicy Szechuan prawns that had just the right amount of sweet heat paired with fried rice. The restaurant was very clean with 5 tables occupied on a Monday night. Kevin took time to answer all of our tourist questions and was a joy to speak with. I will definitely try this place again before we leave! I hope it will warm up to enjoy their outdoor seating area.

Great customer service, speedy service too. Affordable prices. But sadly the food wasn’t as good as I was expecting. Egg fried rice and sweet and sour chicken was good portions. The vegetable spring rolls tasted off? And I noticed my glass had an odd smell. Four stars as the main dishes were okay & as mentioned, the service was very good. I would return but perhaps try a different fish and avoid the spring rolls

Food: very tasty as if we are back in Asia. I don’t think msg was added at all. According to my hubby, the laksa seafood noodles tasted like what he used to have in Burma. I love their **super tender ** beef belly rice. Services: the owner is from HK years ago. Super friendly and patience to introduce the dishes. The waitress is very attentive to guests Atmosphere: best family and friends gatherings place after work.

Our long term favorite Friday post football eatery for tasty Food and Cold beers. Good selection and friendly on the wallet! Always accommodating, even when we turn up on late notice, as part of a large group.

Big portion with small money Culture Grub is just few mins walk from Waterloo station. I usually go there for lunch before or after meeting because the service is quick and the price is good with huge serving. I was there again for lunch with my colleague before a meeting last week. Culture Grub 📍 84 The Cut, London SE1 8LW WHAT WE GOT 🍗Tokyo Style Fried Chicken 🥟Pork Dumplings 🍲Hot & Sour Soup 🍜Laksa 🥬Stir Fried Mixed Veg Hot & Sour Soup was my fav and I ordered it almost every time. It was loaded with wooden ear, egg drops and meat. I loved the thickness and the hot, spicy & sour flavour were just right. Love it 😍😍😍 Laksa came with lots of ingredients including king prawn, fish cake and vegetables. The broth was flavourful and tasty. Tasty😋😋😋 Tokyo Style Fried Chicken is new on the menu. Chicken thigh was lightly coated and deep fried. Crispy outside and juicy inside. Also, the chicken meat was well seasoned with ginger and soy sauce. Love it😍😍😍 Pork dumpling was so juicy and tasty (Swap to the end to see how the soup leaking out🤤). The filling was flavourful and moist. It’s defo a soupy dumpling. Awesome 😋😋😋 I have been Culture Grub for several times before. The portion is always big and the taste of every dish was consistently good. The staffs are cheerful and attentive. It’s a really good Chinese restaurant in Waterloo.

Yelp
The food was decent but make sure you double check your bill. Especially if you're American. They ripped me off and charged me for an entire extra meal. I'll never go back. I recommend you spend your money on better food with better business practices.

Yelp
I didn't have high hopes for this 'really good Chinese place' my sister insisted on dragging me to. 6 minute walk from Waterloo, cheap and good? Meh, probably not. Upon walking in, the vibes are good. Culture Grub is as unpretentious, hole-in-the-wall type as it gets. It feels very much like something you would find in Asia minus the theatre and play posters on the wall. I love the menu straightaway. Each dish comes with a NR (no rice), BR (boiled rice) and FR (fried rice) option. Hell yes. I have eaten at enough Chinese restaurants to know that the main plates are all sharing dishes and do not come with rice normally but I can imagine this easy to understand format would save a lot of others from misconceptions. Food is good albeit not great. However, for cheap and straightforward fare this is more than I need. Excellent value overall.

Yelp
For me this is the definition of your average Chinese food. And I'm saying this as someone who really enjoys Chinese food. This is a small eatery that serves authentic Chinese but just like every cuisines here are different levels. For me this is the pub food of Chinese shops, far from high end cuisine but still full of flavour. The dishes are served in plain plates and there is no decoration or any attention to presentation. My friend asked why the menu photos looked bad and after we got our food we realised that they looked exactly like what you get; well cooked tasty food that looks like it was cooked and plated by your mom, not a chef. I did enjoy my lunch though and I'd happily eat there again but when you visit keep in mind that you are going to a neighbourhood eatery not a high end restaurant.

Yelp
With plenty of choose from on this street, I ended up at Culture Grub before hopping on a train at Waterloo. I wasn't disappointed! 8 quid and some for a large plate of chicken curry and a coke. Served (or rather, actually thrown in front if me) within 3 minutes. Tasted great. If you're looking for a quick bite of decent Chinese food that's incredible value for money, look no further. If you're looking for haute cuisine or a place for a romantic date, look elsewhere. Save 10% by paying cash.

Yelp
Culture Grub is a great place for Chinese food! Everyone assumes the best of London's Chinese cuisine is situated in Chinatown but they are wrong! The friendly atmosphere and brilliant portions are just the tip of the iceberg. I've been in here three times now and the staff are so super nice. The food is superb, great service and authentic taste too. Good to see Chinese people eating in here too, that always reassures me I'm in a quality Chinese restaurant. A brilliant little place to eat - tope marks!

Yelp
Dragged here by work colleagues for lunch in the busy lunchtime rush. One of the chaps was a regular, so no hassle in getting a table. Large group of us and within minutes we were being pressured for drinks and server was quite short with us. Food came out quick, but sadly, this was pretty average at best. I had high hopes given you couldnt move in the place and folk queued out the door. Reality was quite different. Spring rolls were so dire, I actually popped it back into the napkin from my mouth. Just a mouth of hot tasteless oil. Szchean chicken was just okay.. I've had far better at chains, so it should be better here. So in a quick summary, it's okay, it's quick, but it ain't awesome. You Don't Gotta Eat Here :-D

Yelp
I was very disappointed with the quality of food which was served. I ordered a curry as they are quiet hard to do badly, however I was wrong. The boiled rice was overcooked and dry, as was the chicken. The service here was also quite poor. We were given no cutlery and had to ask for some when we had our meals in front of us. Staff were just disinterested in customer's. Will not be returning.

Yelp
Fast, fast food for a sit down meal, making it an ideal spot for pre-theatre if you're going to one of the Vics. It's not huge but have always got a seat at about 6.30, despite the impression of being busy. Also cheap for large portions with rice - chili beef was 6.50 all in. It's not mind-blowing but it gets the job done.

Yelp
As an American visiting London, one of the important lessons I learned about take-away food places in the UK is that they don't really make for great dine-in experiences. I had been in the UK for nearly two weeks at this point, and I was in the mood for some Chinese/Thai food, and this was one of the few Asian restaurants we happened upon near the area of our hotel. I ordered the chicken curry and the dumplings. The amount of food the chicken curry meal yielded was insane--probably enough for two people. As far as the taste of the curry, I wasn't impressed. The dumplings were better than the curry, and after tasting the two, I kinda wished I had opted just for the dumplings. Besides the food, the staff was friendly, and considering this is mostly a take-away place, the service was actually pretty good.

Yelp
You walk in, you order and food comes out. It's that lightening fast. We love going here before going to see a show at the Old or Young Vic. The servers aren't the warmest bunch but they are efficient: water is brought out, food is brought out piping hot and they ask you how your meal is. The food is average but they get that extra star for serving me hot food fast.

Yelp
Solid asian food at a good price in the Waterloo area. Toilets are not the cleanest, so I would stay clear of the toilets if possible.

Yelp
Quick, cheap and tasty Chinese - ideal pre-theatre nosh. For anyone expecting more, the clue truly is in the name. It's grub, alright? Fantastic value, humongous portions delivered faster than the speed of sound. Job done.

Yelp
Good food, well priced served quickly with a smile Great place for great Chinese food...

Yelp
Really gross. I got chicken with black bean sauce and a side of rice. They decided to mix the two together and I ended up with a giant plate of gloppy goo. On the plus side, there was a lot of food. However, it was gross.

Yelp
Culture Grub is one of those places that's fast, efficient, good value and cultured as it's says from their restaurant name. A colleague of mine recommended me this and we went on the Friday lunch near our workplace and looking inside you can see its a diner type restaurant where it's Chinese food as fast food in a small modern decor with tables either side, it had been busy and we were immediately placed onto a table on our right when we went in. Again, we were given the menu and within 5 minutes given the beer and food being ordered. I got the Siczuan chilli pork with rice for 7 pounds and whilst my colleague got the cashew yellow bean chicken with rice for the same price. Again I iterate again was fast paced, the food being reasonable and although it felt small and a lot of people moving around next to us getting tables or waiting around, it did felt like a fast food diner without the luxury of the diner seats you get in the USA. Going along culture wise, I can see this type of restaurant more in Southwark where it's a trendy coworker friendly environment for those who like entertainment and socially contextually aware, with all the theatre flyers on the back of the walls. The overall conclusion is that this is a good place for lunch, a quick meal before a theatre or after work drinks, as it's says on the tin it's good grub.

Yelp
On a cold winter's day while battling a sinus infection, I had a craving for some spicy and warm Chinese food. Culture Grub did not disappoint. I'm not a huge white rice fan and I loved the option of having my chicken and vegetables sans sticky rice. So if your on the caveman diet, this is the place to get your Chinese fix!

Yelp
I'm giving 5 stars here coz' this place remind me of my first year in London. It's been a while since my last visit to this place. If i have a chance to go around waterloo im definitely give this place a visit for sure. must try restaurant

Qype User (anasta…)

Yelp
Small Chinese place with an extremely affordable menu. The food tastes good too. The atmosphere is informal, with no more than a dozen tables. You get an occasional take away visitor. They serve traditional Chinese starters, Peking duck etc. As for the mains, you can get a huge serving of noodles for £6-£7, or similarly priced rice combo. Choose you noodle type, sauce, whether you want a soup or a stir-fry, and the meat or vegetables to go on top. With the rice dishes, you get a plate with the choice of topping (lemon chicken, beef in black bean sauce etc.). Really good value for money, as usually you need to order your main and your rice separately. The first cup of green tea is free, and about £1.50 for top-ups. They've got some quirky deserts (fried ice cream?) and freshly squeezed juices too. Great if you are on a budget, in a hurry, or just after a hearty bowl of noodles.

Yelp
I love this place because it doesn't try to be pretentious. It's simple takeaway food, good value and pretty tasty. Staff have always been consistently friendly. It's better than a chain but it's not somewhere you'd go for a big night out. It's Culture Grub :D

Qype User (Sardin…)

Yelp
I am only giving this place one star for one reason. The staff have been very rude to me on several occasions. They talk loudly to each other while they are serving you. No smiles, no goodbye or thankyou (even when you say it to them) I went in oneday on my own, the place was empty, and in almost a hostile manner a waitress directed me to a single table right up the front where the two women were gossiping in a shouty way at each other inches away from my table. My table was tiny and I could have sat anywhere but was made to feel uncomfortable for being alone. This place has great food at a cheap price, so I kept going back but now I think I am just so fed up with the rudeness that I'll have to find another local. I used to think my tip was considered poor, so I increased it and they were still rude. I've seen them be polite to older men, for some reason never to me.
