Dining out can be so many things but it rarely is an event we choose as a way to meet new people. Culture in a Bowl achieved the rare feat of curating a magical dining experience in Detroit this evening. I mean the food was amazing and a lot, I mean a lot. 5 courses, full portions, I will still be full tomorrow. A progressive dinner, paired with delicious drinks from Black Sip (Check them out, please. She specializes in black and women owned wine). The vibe was down to earth and I’m not quite sure how it started but everyone there took turns introducing themselves and sharing how they ended up at the dinner. It was delightful. Tracey and Rachel have created something so special, inviting, and much needed in this moment. They are doing it through food and family. That's what tonight felt like, being invited to a family meal. Fufu and pepper soup, the perfect remedy to fight back against the overbearing unrelenting winter we find ourselves in. Seafood gumbo, depth of flavor, beautifully dark sauce with a silky mouth feel, perfection. Fried savory dough balls (I’m so sorry I forgot the name of them) with a pepper sauce. There was a wonderful salad to start it all off with apples mixed greens and strawberries, and for the main course, well I’ll let you know about that after I eat it because I was too full to touch it so they gave me a to go box, but it was rice and gravy, collard greens and african potato salad with a corn muffin. If you see an advertisement for another Detroit dinner, don't wait to get a ticket. I have a feeling that after tonight's meal, waiting until the last minute may cost you a magical dining experience.
