Portland Vegan Cheese Shop Cultured Kindness Opens on SE Stark | Eater Portland

"What began as Justin Miller’s hobby making cultured cashew cheese has grown into one of Portland’s most talked-about vegan businesses: after debuting at the St. Johns Farmers Market in 2017 with 20 rounds, the couple now produces about 600 cheese wheels per week and opened a dedicated shop and production kitchen in the Vegan Mini‑Mall on Southeast Stark. The deli case features small-batch, aged cashew cheeses in flavors like black garlic, sundried tomato, a soft brie crusted in crushed black peppercorns, cashew chèvre with balsamic caramelized onion, Miller’s favorite smoky gouda, and playful items such as Pepper Jill (a pepper‑jack–style cheese blended with guajillo and habanero). The menu includes cheesy Buffalo dip, smoky spinach‑artichoke dip, grilled cheese sandwiches (a wink to the previous tenant’s awning sandwich), and signature cheesecakes — ube cheesecakes on an almond‑flour and shredded‑coconut crust and a New‑York–style cheesecake topped with Bloom caramel on a Biscoff‑style rice‑flour crust. Miller’s technique — fermenting organic cashews with dairy‑like cultures (fructooligosaccharides and ascorbic palmitate), adding fair‑trade coconut oil for creaminess, and aging cheeses from one week up to 30 days — aims to recreate the distinctive funk and texture of dairy cheese without additives like tapioca, leaning instead on traditional aging to achieve firmer, grateable textures. Cultured Kindness products are sold at their shop and wholesale accounts (including Food Fight Grocery, Market of Choice, 45th Parallel Wines, and co‑ops throughout Portland and Seattle) and are used by local cafes and restaurants such as Coffee Beer, Secret Pizza Society, Happy Day Juice, and Spielman Bagels. The shop is located at 1217 SE Stark Street and is open noon–6 p.m. Wednesday–Friday and 10 a.m.–6 p.m. Saturday–Sunday." - Waz Wu

Google
Cultured Kindness brought a new experience to my 10 year journey of being dairy free that I wasn’t sure I’d ever see. Sure— I explicitly remember the first time seeing SoDelicious ice cream in Safeway (ahh we’ve come so far with options now), then Daiya cheese which really crushed my soul, it was so bad back then (maybe still is? I’m too scarred from my failed quesadilla to try it again), then the rise of barista alternative milks (okay getting somewhere now). But this spot? THIS CHEESE?! This is next level. This is like borderline lying to my mama because she couldn’t believe it was vegan. This is hosting a fall party and every single person devouring the charcuterie boards, including the vegan meats. THIS is dairy free, and I’m proud. Did I have any part in this? Well, no (does consumer demand count?). But this makes me feel confident walking into holidays with the cheese of all cheese, the holy grail. And nobody even knows what it actually is, they don’t care. It’s too good to care (but I care, and greatly appreciate it as someone who can’t do dairy). The future is here and you can find it at Cultured Kindness. Trust. My dignity as a dairy free person is restored. Ahhh I love you, Portland (,:

How lucky are we to have this shop in Portland! All of their cheeses are incredible, so many great options to put together a charcuterie board as well. Their cheesecakes are also incredible! The staff is so kind on every visit, and love that they carry secret pizza society pizzas!

Google
I was super excited to visit Cultured Kindness before I left Portland, and the experience was top notch! I Ordered a few cheeses to taste and they were all absolutely amazing! I completely forgot to take pictures of the cheeses😒 But the texture and quality were outstanding 😍 I had a little talk with the extremely gracious lady at the counter about the cheese the shop carried. She was very knowledgeable about it. She also gave me a piece to taste before ordering. Would love to come back! 💚

Google
ABSOLUTE HIDDEN GEM! You must try it! We both liked the cheese a lot and only one of us is vegan. I think this "cheese" is for sure the closest to real cheese I've had yet, and so so so delicious. Their smoked apple/gouda panini was excellent. I will for sure be back here again, and probably very soon!

Google
-Herb brie panini - 9/10 great -assorted cheeses - excellent (one was a cranberry coated log, one was a wheel that was white with tan swirls, one was a white wheel with green herbs. -pepper jelly - excellent, great paired with the white and tan cheese -smoked sausage - 7.5/10 very good

Google
Cute shop! Most of their cheeses seemed to be cashew-based which I can't eat due to allergies, but they had some soy-based cheeses as well as vegan honey and vegan sausage/pepperoni which i had never seen before! Very cool!

Google
Was excited to try this place. This is mostly a vegan cheese shop but has some ready made paninis that they grill for you. We had the mushroom panini with smoked Gouda and some kind of peppery cheese. It was delicious. Very flavorful. Mushrooms nice and chewy and tangy. We also tried a few of their samples and bought some of the Brie. Customer service was pleasant.

Google
A surprisingly good vegan cheese: smokey Good-ah. And the staff let us taste samples for free 😊

Yelp
I do love a vegan cheese shop and this one is no exception. I've been trying to make it on my past few visits to Portland, but the hours never seem to work well with my plans. On this visit I just happened to be on my way to dinner nearby and decided to stop in and check it out right before they closed. Thanks Happy Cow for showing me how close together they were. The place is small like I expected, but I did not realize there would be a table available in case you wanted to sit down and grab a bite. I was thinking this was more of a grab and go place, which it totally is, but they also have a menu available. I had not planned to stop by and I was on my way to dinner so I was kicking myself I could not enjoy one of the many delicious sounding sandwiches, but I did decide to treat myself to a small individually wrapped block of cheese that I planned to eat on my walk to the restaurant. The person behind the counter was nice enough to let me sample 4 types which helped make my decision. They were all delicious and I was so sad this was not a place I could stop off for a wine and cheese sampling. I enjoyed the Nutty Dragon, Smoky Good-Ah, Cashew Chevre with Basil and Chive and one other I can not recall. I would get them all again and I would try everything else they offered. I only wish Seattle had something similar. I had planned to consider coming back the next day to enjoy a sandwich, but did not make it. It does seem like they have frozen cheese available if you happen to be on your way out of town and have concerns about not being able to get it home safely. So glad to have checked this out and hope to add it to my Portland routine for future visits.

Yelp
I was so happy to find not only a vegan cheese shop, but also one that makes cashew-based cheeses (because I can't have almonds), AND their cheesecakes have gluten-free crusts (one style, the Ube cheesecake, does have an almond crust), PLUS they have gluten-free bread options for their sandwiches. Their located in an area we don't frequent so it took us a while to finally visit them in person. They also regularly have a booth at both the Beaverton, OR and Vancouver, WA farmers markets. It's not inexpensive, but vegan cheese never is and this is seriously quality stuff! They have a variety of types of cheeses, too! Cheddar, Gouda, Brie and others...yes, please! Follow them on Instagram for photos and seasonal updates. Most recently we enjoyed their Strawberry Basil Balsamic Cheesecake, their Mushroom Melt panini and the Apple Ah-Day melt panini - and it was all absolutely delicious. The cheesecakes are small, one is shareable for 2 people, and the one we purchased was $13.

Yelp
Best vegan (dairy free) cheesecake of my life. I was skeptical that the small-ish $13 cheesecake would be worth the stop, but it has been my favorite dessert so far in 2024. The space is rather small and I think lends itself more for To Go orders or picnic orders, but I'll be back for that dessert.

Yelp
Do you want to eat cheese and dessert at the same time and to not feel guilty for indulging? Wait, that's not even a question dear reader because I know you do! Try the cheesecake at Cultured Kindness made from ethically-sourced and cashew-based cheese! They offer seasonal flavors such as pumpkin cheesecake but also year-round classics such as NY style cheesecake. As far as cheese blocks/wedges are concerned, they offer a variety of different kinds but the brie is my favorite. It has me singing "sweet dreams are made of cheese. Who am I to diss a brie." Their elaborate and laborious process yields a creamy yet firm texture and tangy yet deep flavor profile which emulates traditional cheese. When something sounds too good to be true, it often is, but Cultured Kindness is an exception.

Yelp
As a vegan I'm not going to pretend great vegan cheese isn't hard to find, it's getting easier, but finding AMAZING vegan cheese that's just as good as dairy.... Well look no further! This cheese isn't just wonderful for a vegan cheese, it's a wonderful cheese in general!! I found this little shop yesterday and I'm so impressed! It's honestly just like eating a great quality soft cheese that stands up to its dairy counterparts. I don't know how they do it, but they do it well!! Any of the choices go beautifully on a charcuterie board, as you don't have to cover them up with other flavors, they are so, so good on their own! They have sample sizes which is such a good idea and always nice to support a local small business. Much love Cultured Kindness, thank you for bringing Portland such a wonderful product and helping make the world a kinder place!

Yelp
Some of the best vegan cheeses I've ever had! And I'm going on 5 years of trying all the vegan cheeses possible, so I've had a lot. Lol I bought the pepper Jill, basil and chives, and smoky gouda. They are all extremely delicious!! My favorite is the basil and chives -- it's herby flavor is incredible. I wish I had more of all of them!!! They're all soft cheeses (like a cream cheese), just so you're aware. I also got the fig salami. This is very nice and I can taste the salami flavor at the end of the bite (slightly). This however, is not a proper substitute for salami because it's EXTREMELY sweet. I used it on a charcuterie board as a fruit because it's too sweet to be for any other purpose. The taste is good tho. The service was great! We arrived a few minutes before closing and the female owner allowed us to take our time deciding what to get, and answered all of our questions.

Yelp
For some reason I find this name so hard to remember so I have to refer to my saved google pin of this place. I wish the open hours were a bit more convenient but their vegan cheese are AMAZING. Discovered them on the cheese plates at Erath and friends both vegan and not vegan enjoyed the "cheeses"

Yelp
Amazing. Tasty cheeses you can sample since there are so many choices. The vegan cheesecake is perfect. The flavor, the texture, the crust. Definitely coming back for a grilled cheese next time in town.

Ro L.

Yelp
Went to store for the first time. The super kind (owner vibes) person working the front told me about the cheeses. I was going to buy a whole wheel, but realized I probably couldn't finish it, so I bought a couple wedges and they were delicious. Will be back soon!

Yelp
Lots of vegan gluten free cheese options. Bought several even some to pair up with a good wine. They also have delicious breakfast sandwiches which I had with there in house tofu bacon. I came to visit Portland had to try every vegan place and I have to say I seriously fell in love with the breakfast sandwich. Thank you

Yelp
Hands down the best gourmet vegan cheese on the market. Not just in Portland, but truly better than anything they sell at Whole Foods or New Seasons! I first tried Cultured Kindness cheese about five years ago or so, and I have been hooked ever since. I always buy several at a time, storing a few in my freezer so that I can bust them out when I need a special vegan cheese to bring to a gathering or holiday celebration. All of the cheeses are spectacular, but the brie style with herbs has my heart. It's INCREDIBLE. It's creamy, it's tart, it's smooth, it hits all of the herby notes, and it is so versatile. You can put it on everything from a cracker to a quesadilla to a grilled cheese to a pasta dish. A close second favorite would be the Pepper Jill, which is also very creamy, slightly tart, and has a fair amount of spice to it. Really, you can't go wrong here. The folks that run Cultured Kindness are super friendly, super compassionate, and everything they make is out of this world.

Yelp
Some of the best vegan cheese I've had and I'm not even vegan. The service is great and their sandwiches are delicious too!

Yelp
The cheeses from this shop are unbelievable!!! The sandwich I had was so delicious and the customer service was spectacular!!! The woman that waited on me is apparently the owners mom and she couldn't have been nicer. She needs to give lessons to all these horrible young hipsters in Portland on how to treat customers. I will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Wonderful customer service and selection of cheeses and desserts. The Ube cheesecake was delicious!

Lauren W.

Yelp
Amazing vegan cheese!! We tried the Smoky Good-ah today and it was incredible, will be coming back ASAP to try more flavors (as well as their cheesecake and sandwiches). Plus, the lady who helped us was so kind and helpful. Love this place!
