Where to Drink Beer in North County - Eater San Diego

"Don’t let the slightly tough-to-remember name throw you — this place in Carlsbad founded by Mike Stevenson and Ben Fairweather is worth remembering for sure. “Chef Matt” Craig worked as a bartender at the place, but had a passion for cooking, and he opened the Lightly Toasted deli spot built right into the bar area. And not only is the food tasty (and easy to order), but the beer’s solid as well — they make a great Irish red, an excellent Tangerine wheat ale, and if you’re lucky, a Peanut Butter Porter on nitro. It’s a little off the beaten path, but especially with the food spot up and running, Culver’s definitely worth finding." - Mike Schramm

We absolutely love this brewery! The food is consistently good, and we really appreciate the variety on the menu – there's always something for everyone. Of course, the beer is great, and the recent addition of more seating has made a huge difference, especially during busy times. A huge bonus for us is how close it is to the airport; our daughter is fascinated watching the planes fly overhead! It's a fantastic spot for all.

Google
Came out for a special event and had a great time. The culver staff was so welcoming and lovely. The beer was delicious. The pizza was for the event, very good. But Culver’s sandwiches are delicious. I like to try their specials but when in doubt the hey Tony slaps hard. Cheers!

Google
A true gem in the heart of the city. I’ve been here three times already, and each experience has been consistently great. The bartenders are knowledgeable and take pride in their work — they’re happy to chat and even suggest custom drinks based on your mood. Last time, I told them I wanted something "refreshing but not sweet," and they delivered a basil-infused cocktail that blew my mind. It’s also a rare bar where the bathrooms are spotless, which says a lot about how well it’s run. Highly recommend for cocktail lovers!

Google
Industrial brewpub in a business park that you’d expect to feel cold but has a great vibe. An extensive variety of styles and judging by a lager I had, they’re all likely well made. Sandwich window inside makes some seriously delicious food which adds to the great experience. Stop by for a pint if you’re nearby!

Google
What a fantastic sandwich, definitely didn't skimp on the meat! The beers were good, and the bartender was great! The blackberry sour must be popular as they were sold out of the cans, I'll for sure stop by again when I'm in town!

Google
Great little spot for beers, simple grub and good vibes. Nice people. Very much a locals spot. Dog friendly. Beers are really good, even in the context of the hop highway, they hold their own.

Google
Culver is a nice hidden gem in Carlsbad, just across the street from Breast Ranch. While parking is a pain, don't let that dissuade you from coming here for a delicious beer and a killer sandwich. Also everyone who works here is nice and have plenty of personality. Usually you can find a dozen or so selections on tap with a great rotation of IPAs, hard seltzers, sours, and seasonal offerings like a killer Marzen. There is a mug club here if you like that sort of thing. Overall one of the better small breweries in San Diego. DONT SLEEP ON THE SANDOS.

Kathleen

Google
Love this local gem! Delicious beer and a great vibe. Cant wait to come by and try their sandwiches.

Yelp
Living in Vista off the 78, we are spoiled by so many solid breweries and pubs near by. So Culver Beer company just to the south had been passed up for others so many times. In hindsight, this was such a massive mistake. Culver beer is phenomenal. Only been several times but I rave about it to all that will listen. The service, vibe, beer, and sandwiches are all top notch. I making my way through both the menus but have not had a miss yet.

Yelp
This place is absolutely the best in town. Such great food. Ben, Jake, and Charlie are so friendly and cool. Try the French dip, it's to die for.

Yelp
Awesome people, awesome beer and awesome sandwiches! We love Culver's! Tucked away off of Palomar Airport Rd. If you want to hang with cool beertenders, and cool locals that like to watch Padre games and enjoy great beer this is the place to be. The sandwiches are on a different level! Check the reviews and you will see! Our dog loves coming here too!

Yelp
This place never fails us. The best beer and sandwiches around. They do a great job with a relaxed Setting.

Yelp
This place is awesome. Great beer and sandwiches. Had a outside patio you can see all the private jets land. Great beer selection no stouts but something close that my wife enjoyed. Street walker and hazy ipa for me. We both loved the hot tony sandwich baked. Mmmmmm

Yelp
What a great place! This is tucked into an uninviting business park but is worth the effort to find. Great beer, service and atmosphere are found behind the door that looks like a startup office. The food selection is pretty thin but high quality. I got the chick peas sandwich which was delicious and bountiful. My friend's pastrami was similarly oversized and tasty. It's super casual but doesn't have any outdoor seating.

Yelp
Came here on a recommendation and it definitely lived up to it. Had the Smoked Cali and normally I like very few things on my sandwich. The Smoked Cali was stuffed full and I loved every bite, it was balanced and fresh! My husband had the RBC paired with the Culver Red and only had good things to say about both. After, he began eyeing the the beer to go. That's how much he enjoyed the beer. Service was friendly and attentive. Overall, good food and a casual, local feeling place. I would like to forward my recommendation to others! Give it a try.

Yelp
Oh we love Culver. Of course their beer is delicious, they have many different options and they have a couple NA options. Their sandwiches are great, our go to is the Hey Tony but their beef dip is amazing. I've literally drank the au jus I had left over. Lemon pepper wings came out hot, crispy, and well seasoned. The ambiance is fun and they had rad gear. I bring most of my out of town friends here when visiting. Always impressed!

Yelp
Great beer & excellent sandwiches made to order. Friendly bartenderI had the Turkey, bacon & avocado. NO skimping on the Turkey! Had it on fresh marble rye bread Husband had the "Hey Tony"which was loaded with ham, pepperoni salami & a tasty Italian chili relish. Both were a 5+ Had an IPA & a lager, both very good. This is tucked away in an Industrial center in Carlsbad. "Locally Toasted " is the name of the sandwich deli inside of the brewery" Culver Beer Co." Plenty of indoor seating. A couple tables outside in the back.Happy to find this spot. Pet friendly too. Yay for our new favorite deli sandwiches and only a couple miles from our home

Bobbi B.

Yelp
Nothing like a Street Walker to accompany you as you have one of Culver's absolutely amazing sandwiches! Pick any of them then pick your brew....like being on vacation but 10 minutes from home. Chuck puts the fun in the whole experience with his contagious attitude! Cheers!

Yelp
Pretty chill spot for brew and food. I'm usually here for food (locally toasted). They got a good selection going and the hopped water is not bad. Can get crowded at times but overall a great time.
google avatar

Yelp
These sandwiches are amazing! They stack with it meat, and the rolls are deliciously soft. They have a great selection to choose from, and are great with personalization. Service is friendly and quick. Nice little brewery so what's not to love, delicious sandwich and a beer for lunch!
google avatar

Logan V.

Yelp
They have great sandwiches and varieties of appetizers. They have ranges of wings, cheesy garlic bread, and their great giant pretzel. Their service is amazing and their bartender is amazing. Very cozy area with forestry vines on the wall. They have great seating selections inside and out. They have a classic pinball machine which cost 1 quarter for 5 plays! Highly suggest if looking for a nice brewery

Yelp
Cool brewery. Laid back atmosphere. Delicious beer. Staff is nice. Good guys. Their food menu looked awesome. Didn't try any food but next time I will. Can't go wrong here. I'll be back for more.

Yelp
We love the beer and the food as well as the atmosphere! The bartender is great and offers amazing suggestions! One of our favorite spots

Yelp
We're not in Kansas anymore. The place a little hard to find. You can't see the entrance from the street. It's in a generic warehouse-y area. The entrance is, well, kind of bland. But you walk inside and everything changes. There's string lighting, TVs everywhere, colorful murals, and real-live booths. It looks and feels like a restaurant. Like somewhere you want to hang out. You may not be in Oz but it sure ain't Kansas. You're here for the beer, of course, but you should absolutely come for the fresh deli sandwiches, too, brought to you by Locally Toasted. These sandwiches are as good as any around. We tried the muffuletta and the Billy Beef (London broil, bacon, cheese, cheese, avo) and they were both excellent. I tried two beers and they were both very nice examples of their styles. El Tigre is a "Baja" lager and it's nice and clean and refreshing. Hardly, Maybe is a Marzen lager and it's a little darker than a regular lager and it has a nice, rich taste and plenty of flavor. By the way, they don't do flights or tasters, which is a drag, but they will give you tastes at the bar, if you're curious about something. And about those sandwiches...The entire menu is killer. These are terrific sandwiches and you simply must get one. You can thank me later. The staff was very friendly and they are both kid and dog friendly. And they have three full-size pinball machines. Beer, sandwiches and pinball in a casual, welcoming environment. No ruby slippers but do you really need anything more?

Yelp
They close way to early. 6:30 pm lol get the fuck out It says open until 8pm and you stop serving food at 6:30 wow

Yelp
Great great brewery, great selection of beers and seltzer's. All the IPAs I tried were fantastic, I only wish they offered flights. It's so rare to find a brewery that offers food, this place does! Great sandwiches and chips! Great spot for a drink and lunch!
google avatar

Michelle Y.

Yelp
Great variety of beers and seltzers for people of all different likings. Plus, they have a great little deli in the brewery, so no worrying about if the food vendor of the day does or doesn't show up after all and you're starving. The menu seems to change semi regularly because I had a different sandwich this time then my first visit. I actually ended up getting a full pour of their strawberry lemonade seltzer after trying a taste of a couple different beers. I even told the brewer, Danny, that I always try a seltzer when I go to breweries to see if they're decent or not and in most cases its not what I end up ordering. Very few breweries have mastered making a good seltzer that can compete with White Claw and the likes but Culver is doing a good job with their seltzers. Danny was also great and sat with us at the end of our visit and chatted with us a bit. Culver is dog friendly, has a lot of room inside plus a nice little back patio that they built for a nice day. They also have two pinball games to get a little arcade action in. Sandwiches, tasty adult beverages and I can bring my doggos? I'm there! Will definitely be back.

Yelp
Chill vibes. Inside and outside seating. Sandwiches look good. Wish we were hungry. Bartenders happily provided samples. Extra bonus, free stickers! All in all, brief, but great experience.

Yelp
Sandwich so good I drink the au jus. The beer is great don't get me wrong but my lord the French Dip sandwich is phenomenal. I must go grab one every time I think about it. The sesame bread. The crispy onions. The London broil thinly sliced. Then dip that bitch in steaming hot au jus. Wash down with beer. Must try.
google avatar

Sydney N.

Yelp
This is an awesome spot to grab a beer and a sandwich. It's kid friendly and dog friendly as well! They have some arcade games, and there's plenty of room for kids and dogs to run around. They have TVs and both tables and a bar top. Initially, our waitress told us it was going to be 40 minutes before we got our sandwiches. She then brought them out about 10 minutes later and informed us that she bumped our order up before the large phone order they just received. I thought that was very kind of her. I got a veggie sandwich as a I don't eat meat, it was good but a bit bland. I also got a strawberry lemonade seltzer which was delicious and not too sweet. We brought our pup and he enjoyed the other dogs and being inside with us. Overall, this is a great place for everyone!

Yelp
I looooove me a hidden gem, and let me tell you, this is hidden! Tucked back in a business park, Culver Beer is just back there doin' their thing. We stopped in for a couple sandwiches and a take-home six pack and had a great time. It might help that they're a Padre bar and we could sit and watch the game on numerous TVs, but that's not what sold me. This place has a great vibe and appeared to have a loyal following with lots of regulars hanging out and enjoying what we have been missing out on. I took home their Tiger Ride Belgian Blonde and couldn't believe this wasn't more well-known. For being as good of a beer as this is, more people should be drinking it and at VERY least, talking about it. We'll come back and try something from their menu that looks like they have 17 beers on tap. If everything else is as good as this Tiger Ride, I'm in for a treat.

Sirina L.

Yelp
Come here almost weekly! Beer is great and food is delicious. Environment is very welcoming and the beer tenders are awesome, 10/10!
google avatar

Vincent C.

Yelp
For me this brewery is a hidden gem because the beers are very good, it's usually not full of people, they have delicious sandwiches, and the location is great. I love coming here because I know the food is delicious and the beers are always on point!!!!!! I'm just amazed with this spot on how tasty their beers are!!!! The beer tenders are helpful and pretty chill. I just wish I could come here more often.
google avatar

Cesar R.

Yelp
Friendly bartender Good beers excellent sandwiches perfect place to go c the San Diego Padres

Annabell C.

Yelp
Best sandwiches I've ever had! The service, beer, and ambiance was great too. I definitely recommend the Smokey Joe and Sideline Dom Sandwiches and whatever sour beer they have.
google avatar

Richard F.

Yelp
Stopped by to check out the brewery and the selections. I will have to say it is all good. Tried several of the beers and seltzers and all were worthy of taking home for further enjoyment. Nice bartenders and staff. Food is very good as other reviewers have stated. When you get the chance or time, definitely a place to check out!
google avatar

Jinny L.

Yelp
I know this is a brewery, but their sandwiches are AMAZING! I used to live nearby, so I brought my friends here whenever we wanted to grab a drink and easy meal. I have tried all their hot sandwiches (the smokey joe is my favorite, but really none of the hot sandwiches have let me down). Their food is great, but also their beer is amazing as well. I have tried Street Walker, Solar Rip, Tiger Ride, 7th Dimension, Pinch Hitter, and Tough Luck. I liked every single one. I usually have photos with my reviews, but I can't help eating the food and finishing my drink before I remember to take any photos! There are several pinball machines and lot's of TV screens to watch games. I have been there during peak hours (when the padres are playing) and when it was less crowded. Either way, I could always hold conversations (some bars/breweries are too loud to talk in). The pinball machines are fun to play at too! The employees there are always friendly and helpful. They do stop taking food orders 2 hours before closing time, but you can always call in your order ahead of time and pay when you arrive. Parking is really easy too (there are always spaces in front of the brewery or in the back). All in all, I love Culver Beer Co.'s artwork (their merch is really cool), food, and drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
I love the food. I love the ambiance. And I love the service. I was referred by a coworker and now I'm hooked.
google avatar

Yelp
Came here forever ago before kids and remember the beers being good. 2 kids later, decided to finally come back and meet up with friends. I really enjoyed the mosaic IPA. Juicy IPA was also good. They had a couple of really solid stouts too. They have pinball and a back patio and some space for the kids, so that is greatly appreciated. Always love it when we find good breweries that are kid-friendly. They also have decent food. Took a bite of my friend's bacon banh mi. Definitely good with beers. Looking forward to coming back again soon!

Chris K.

Yelp
Got the bodega 5, quittin cold turkey, and (pictured) the seasonal Austin Robot, and their most popular IPA. I cannot understate how good these sandwiches are. Creative yet classic combinations. The beer i had was also very good, classic balanced flavors.
google avatar

Jim E.

Yelp
For me and my friends that are native to this area and seen the craft brewery movement from the beginning. Culver stands out as one of our favorites. Very humble beginnings they have always given us better beer year after year without the hype you seen from big money breweries. Feedback from their customers has made them unique and very tasty. This includes the kitchen. Always a neighborly vib here. A little tricky to find but that's part of it's charm. Five Stars for the local boys at Culver !
google avatar

Yelp
Outstanding brewery located in an office park in Carlsbad. I came here on a whim once while I was looking for a place to get some work done. It was too late in the day for coffee, so I figured "why not?" Great decision. Parking was easy, the interior was clean and had wifi, and most importantly it was an excellent experience. Service was beyond friendly and the beers were delicious. Reasonably priced to boot! Everything in the pictured flight was fantastic. Definitely recommended!
google avatar

Nell C.

Yelp
Checked into Culver Beer Co with group of friends. Beers are good and there are hot and cold sandwiches with chips. Happy hour after 2pm. Located in Carlsbad in an industrial business park. Come by and chill.

Sean W.

Yelp
My favorite brewery/lunch spot for mid week cravings. The spellcrafter is my favorite beer they have. Sandwiches are top notch. The hey Tony is literally my favorite Italian sub in north county SD. Definitely get it toasted. Also high suggest the French dip.. it's so good. All sandos come with chips. Highly recommend this place for a lunch break.
google avatar

Lisa W.

Yelp
I really like the vibe here. It felt welcoming with the deli, booths, and bar games. We didn't try the deli but they serve sandwiches and cold cuts from boar's head. Next time! We sat at the bar and did the $6 tasters for 4, which is an excellent deal! Probably the best taster deal. We did 2 tasters and then some. I really like their German style beer and their sours. Wasn't too fond of their hazy, but other wise they have good beers. Beertenders were also very talkative and nice. It was like hanging out with friends. Plus side, they allow dogs! Yay for our beer dog.
google avatar

Gordon Y.

Yelp
The ultimate "Mom & Pop" brewery except it two friends that own this gem. The sandwiches are delightful. The apps and snacks are a great compliment to the beers. The beer selection isn't the normal 12 ipas and a lager... Try the Stout it's delicious. The atmosphere is part sticky part pinball noises. I love it!

Larry W.

Yelp
Great S Carlsbad brewery with a variety of beers. Really good Belgian wheat and blonde. A variety of IPA's. They ferment their own seltzer too. The sandwich shop makes great huge sandwiches (both hot and cold) as well as pub favorites at surprisingly low prices. Hard to find but worth it! 2nd right driveway off of Loker.
google avatar

Holly F.

Yelp
You can't go wrong with any of the sandwiches here. Do yourself a favor and ask for some bread & butter pickles, they're delicious.
google avatar

Kate M.

Yelp
We discovered this place after visiting Campfire in Carlsbad. We tasted a Culver IPA there and thought it was amazing! When I looked up where Culver was located, I couldn't believe it was right in Carlsbad! We stopped in Sunday for lunch. We split a sandwich and chips and each had a beer. I had the Marzen and it was amazing! I haven't had a good Marzen outside of ones brewed in Germany, and was pleasantly surprised how good this one was! My husband also liked the IPA he ordered. You can also order sandwiches while you are here from the Locally Toasted place inside. It was a great lunch! We will definitely be back. The service was great, the beer tenders were extremely helpful and friendly, and best of all--it's dog friendly! Our frenchie had a great time.
google avatar

John M.

Yelp
We were in Carlsbad visiting several breweries for some birthday celebration beer tasting. I'm sad to say that Culver was our least favorite of the three stops we made. Here's what we noticed: - Fundamentally, we just didn't find the beers to be that unique or spectacular. - Tasting room was OK, but didn't feel particularly warm or comfortable. - Highlights were the free popcorn and the price of four tasters at $6 (my wife and I shared four and my sister and her husband shared four others). Bottom line: Unexceptional local brewery...not likely to warrant a repeat visit from us.
google avatar

Henry H.

Yelp
Saw the reviews and went looking. It's in an industrial type complex. No signage out on the street and no signage on their door. But google maps said we were here. Almost didn't go in. However, once inside we found a comfortable atmosphere. Ordered the pastrami and an Italian sandwich. They were fantastic. Some of the best sandwiches we have ever eaten. The place was packed so their lack of signage wasn't hurting them at all. We'll be back next time we are in town.

David P.

Yelp
Beer is great! They have some of the best pastrami sandwiches. Place is very basic, but great prices, great value for north county Carlsbad. It would be great if they were open later. Hours are limited. And it's located in the back of what looks like a office complex. Could use some better signage up front.
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Highly recommend this North County brewery. The beers are the steps ahead of the other Carlsbad breweries and customer service far outpaces the competition. Pros: besides the excellent beer & awesome bartenders? the deli located in the brewery, the dog-friendly atmosphere, and a few bar games to play. They have a tap-cam you can look up what beers are on tap online. There are three TVs usually playing sports but the volume is never overwhelming. Cons: the deli closes one hour before closing BUT you can call ahead to order food for pick up if you think you are cutting it close. Overall, the friendly, patient bartenders and great tasting beers makes this a favorite local haunt.
google avatar

Maxwell M.

Yelp
Had some time between account visits in the afternoon and was looking for a spot to grab a beer! Unfortunately most things in the Bressi Ranch/Vista area don't open until 3pm. Not Culver! I was able to stop in around 2pm and was greeted by a cool, calm interior with a couple patrons at the bar. Grabbed a pint of their New Zealand lager and sat down. What I was initially unaware of is that the brewery has a kitchen! They start serving food at 2pm, wings were solid, lacked a little crispyness, but beggars cant be choosers. Beer was top notch, crisp and clean, exactly what I expect from a lager. Staff was friendly and consistently checked in. If you're in Bressi and need an early afternoon pint, this is your spot!

Katie L.

Yelp
The best sandwiches! That's all you need to know. Not a huge beer fan in general, but even I liked the beer. Great spot! Good vibes!
google avatar

Saleen M.

Yelp
We came in during the middle of Trivia Night on Thursday! How fun! We were in the middle of brewery hopping but will definitely come back to play. Awesome bartender. Great selection of brew. Televisions. & fun atmosphere to just chill. Dirty Bird (Amaretto Red): A must order for anyone who loves Amaretto! A delicious, strong flavor of Amaretto, it tastes as good as it smells! Night Cap (Vanilla Stout): Slightly sweet.

Yelp
Visited this brewery for a fundraiser event and the vibes were great! The entire staff was friendly and warm. The location is a little hidden but was a great location for the small fundraiser. I am not a beer drinker but their seltzers were not bad. Would visit here again.
