San Miguel de Allende Travel Guide

"Recommended for a tasting-pairing menu amid the region's resurging local wine production; the area has a growing vineyard scene on fertile land and a wine-making tradition that expanded after the Mexican War of Independence — Miguel Hidalgo is largely credited for teaching locals in Dolores how to produce wine, and those techniques are still used today." - Travel + Leisure Editors

We spent an exceptional afternoon at Cuna de Tierra learning about the wine and the history of the region. Our host Paco was knowledgeable, gracious, engaging, humorous and clearly passionate about the importance of this growing wine region. We opted to have the four course lunch paired with four very nice wines. Pairing on 3 of the 4 were spot on, my wife believed all four were perfect. Lunch was served under a covered terrace overlooking the vineyard. The chef explained the food and preparation for each dish. The food was exceptional as was the wine, the hospitality was equally memorable. We will be enjoying the wine we brought home with fond memories of our afternoon at the vineyard.

We had a fantastic lunch at the Cuna de Tierra Restaurant! The setting is just what you are after when eating in a vineyard, vines all around, fantastic shady table under a tree and a knowledgeable sommelier that can recommend pairings from the a la carte menu. The food is also excellent, with Mexican and more European dishes available. Thanks to Antonio and the team for a wonderful experience!! And let’s not forget the stars of the show, the wines are fantastic with a wide range by the glass too

UPDATE junio 2025. Return visit this time to restaurante. Delicious sourdough pizza and ensalada betabel. Yum. Purchased vino! ORIGINAL We really enjoyed our visit to Cuna de Tierra with wine 🍷 tastings on the patio. Oldest winery in Dolores Hidalgo, GTO. Favorites were a delicious rose, a dessert wine similar to a port and some of their vino tintos. We purchased 4 bottles to bring home. Worth a visit. Recommend! Suggest a reservation so they know you’re coming.

Nice place! We went without reservations but were welcome anyway. No tour though. But we loved the building, great wine and food. At almost 2000 meters in a peacefull surrounding. 👍🏼

Yelp
Simply an amazing lunch experience at a beautiful winery. Everything is immaculate, from the grounds to the buildings. My experience started with a four-course meal paired with wine. The guide did an excellent job explaining the food and wine, and the winery is remarkable for its extensive experimentation. I believe they have something like 30+ varietals planted with a core group or four or five that make up the majority. Yes, there are olive trees here too! Their climate might mirror some other wine regions in the world, but when combined with their elevation they have a unique canvas to work with for production. The favorite of the tasting was the Cuna de Tierra Blanco, Semillon - Sauvignon Blanc blend in pre-fermentation and carbonic maceration. Malolactic in French oak barrels. Wow! After the tasting there was a tour of the grounds in a very comfortable wagon pulled by a tractor. Open air and wonderful 360º views all the way around. There was a stop at a viewing platform where you could take in the surroundings and pause for a photo moment as well. Coming back to the main building, the tour continued into the processing and storage area. However, the best part was returning inside where everything started to purchase a couple of bottles to take back home. Unfortunately, this is not something I am going to find in any store back in the US. And, don't ask, no one is going to ship alcohol across boarders.

Yelp
This winery was a very pleasant surprise! We saw it on yelp and the reviews were great. There's a 40 minute tour that includes driving thru the vineyard and the sommelier told us the history of the site and explained all grape varieties. They also grow table grapes and olives. The meal was 4 courses that included beef tenderloin. Beautiful presentation and delicious. They grow their own vegetables too. It's about an hour taxi or Uber ride from SMA. Worth the trip.

Yelp
This is a winery that offers tours and breakfast for those early birds. Their whole breakfast service was amazing from start to finish. I have taken their wine tours before but I did not take it on this visit.

Yelp
When arrived at the winery we were greeted by a security person who took our temperature and provided us with hand sanitizer. Then upon exiting our vehicle, we were greeted again by a hostess and a receptionist who both introduced themselves. We were provided a tour of the winery, first via the tower in a wagon (so much fun) and then a walk to other areas of the winery. The hostess lady did her very best to speak to us in English and explain all of the information as it relates to their winemaking process. They had several bikes on the winery and asked if we wanted to take a ride around the winery (so much fun) after enjoying the wine tasting. The wine tasting consisted of tasting three wines (sauvignon blanc, malbec, and merlot). The tasting came along with a cheese and meat tray. The cheese and meat tray included four different kinds of cheese, olives, and meat, and various nuts). At each tasting, we were advised to select various items from the tray that would change our palette for tasting. The service was great from start to finish. The restroom area detached from the wine tasting unit was clean and provided soap, paper towels, and hand sanitizer. Every employee we interacted with wore a mask and provided safety measures.

Yelp
Cuna Four of us friends spent a magical afternoon with Paco, assistant to the Cuna de Tierra winemaker, who shared his passion and expertise with us. We learned that wine pairing is based on molecular science, and it was fascinating to discover how the science combines with our emotions and sensibilities to determine our individual wine experiences. If the effect is pleasing or causes flavors to explode, this means that the wine and food have molecules in common, and you have a pairing. This is only one of many things we learned from this Spanish-Mexican who trained in wine-making in Rioja, Spain. Thanks to Paco, our experience was cosmopolitan, extremely informative and if I may say so, full of love. He and the wonderful wine and food as well as the beautiful vineyard made for a marvelous end to our two weeks in San Miguel de Allende. This vineyard and the tour and tapas and wine pairing are a truly world class experience. We would love to come back for more of what the vineyard had to offer. We met the owner, the winemaker, the chef, and tasted wines, tapas, jams and olive oils, all made either at the vineyard or locally. Great day!
