As someone who read lots of books and watched documentaries on the Titanic, it’s very interesting to be at the place the Carpathia came into port with the survivors from that tragedy. They have a little mural on the Titanic and Carpathia and Lusitania. They also have the original posts cut off so you can see where the original pier was. Just a few blocks south is the Jane Hotel where the survivors stayed. It’s an actual hotel so not a tourist destination unless you sleep there but another interesting part of history.

So many people walk past this rusting structure, not realising its important place in history, to head on to Little Island which admittedly give some great views of the financial district. Hiding in plain sight, this is all that remains of Pier 54, where the passengers of the Titanic should have disembarked. If you look up at it from the roadside, you can just about make out the word Cunard. It's definitely worth a look before or after Little Island.

One of the coolest pieces of history that’s hidden away in all of NYC. This is what’s left of the building and pier where the Titanic was supposed to dock but of course never made it. If you have some time go see it.

I Iove they kept this... It's true NYC history & a tribute to all. The Cunard White Star line included 'the Titanic' ...there is a great and respectful info exhibit along the water at Chelsea Piers (right up the block from here before 23rd St.). "I am not sure if it sailed from this exact spot but most likely did (or a block north at possibly another pier the line operated from right on this very shoreline)" - Evan

As a lover of New York history, I'm always thrilled to see new reminders of what has come before. The latest thing(s) I've fallen in love with are these two painting-under-plexiglass panels they must have recently put up outside Little Island on the railings and behind the old Cunard cast iron pier entrance. They show the Titanic and Carpathia (which brought Titanic's survivors to New York) and the Lusitania, which sailed from Pier 54 (which the Titanic was supposed to have docked with had her voyage ended successfully). There are two round, explanatory cast iron (?) plates, one in front of each of the painted panels, and embedded in the sidewalk/walkway esplanade. See accompanying photos.

Lusitania 1908 as seen docking at pier 54, now the location of Little Island today. On May 7th 1915, 5 days after leaving pier 54 in New York, the Lusitania was sunk by a German U-boat killing 1,195 of 1,959 passengers. Prompted the US to enter the First World War.

If you're a fan of the Titanic, and want to step by a spot of history, stop by along the Hudson river park to see the last vestige of the Cunard White Star pier, where the Titanic survivors landed from the Carpathia after the Titanic was due to arrive at pier 59 but sadly never made it.
