The Best Ice Cream In Seattle

"Cupcake Royale makes some of the best cupcakes in the city. So logically, when you crumble said cupcakes into custard mix and freeze it, you’re going to get some of the city’s best ice cream, too—like buttermilk blended with red velvet cake, and a salted caramel ice cream that’s heavy on the salt (in a good way) but also on the dark chocolate cake. Bonus points if you get the aforementioned ice cream scooped on top of an actual cupcake, which is a thing you can truly do here." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley

On the Grid : Cupcake Royale

"If you’re into cupcakes that are topped with the most perfect, handmade frosting, then you should probably get in here immediately. With super inventive combinations like Saffron with Honey Almond Crunch, or Tiramisu, they’ve made it easy to save room at the end of every meal." - Hum Creative

Cupcake Royale is a cute little cupcake store in Madrona. The cupcakes are so good. I had the lemon drop. Each bite was a burst of lemony deliciousness. They come in a cute little box if you decide to take them out of the store. The store itself is clean. Staff is nice. We will definitely be back when we get a sweet youth.

I wanted to check out Cupcake Royale before the stores close and go full delivery mode; and I’m glad I tried this place. Not pictured is the Gay cupcake, but it’s beautiful and delicious- highly recommend. I ended up giving the Lemon and Red velvet away, but I’m sure they’re delicious, too. If you come in early you will have lots of options! Hope everyone will check out Cupcake Royale 🧁🌈♥️

Wow! Loved the cupcakes here. I got three with my boyfriend - the cinnamon roll, the apple spice, and the triple berry pie. All of the them were so so so so so good, especially the apple spice. I believe all of them were seasonal, so I wanna go again soon. Also had a great iced latte! And the guy behind the counter was really nice.

Google
Hands down the best cupcakes in the Seattle area. The staff is so friendly here! I’ve ordered for birthday parties before and there hasn’t once been a mix up with my order. If you stop by for just one cupcake they also have coffee and a variety of other pastries as well in their shop. They even have gluten free options and I like how they source their ingredients locally.

I can't recall giving a low 1 star to any business but this one deserves it. I walked in, there were 2 customers who were already helped, then me. The only employee was on the phone. She didn't acknowledge me, didn't motion she saw me, nothing. I continued to wait 10 minutes. I left. She was still on the phone. I will never return. I'll buy an espresso and cupcake elsewhere.

Google
In my opinion, the best cupcake ever. And I've looked! I'm solely down for vanilla, favorite icing is lavender. Coffee drimks good enough to be a plus. Service is capable and cheerful. Favorite location? Cupcakes are enough.

Google
Such a sweet cupcake bakery and coffee shop, and also a huge contributor to the Madrona community. Jodi is the best.

Came in at 5pm and they had happy hour for the cupcake. Got 2 for 1. Great service

Yelp
This is such a cute shop in Madrona! Food: 4/5. I had the Lesbian Pride and vegan chocolate cupcakes. Both were very dense and cakey, but they weren't as moist as I would prefer. I also enjoyed purchasing and trying the mushroom coffee blend sold in store. Service and atmosphere: 5/5. The coffee shop is bright and trendy! The service was great, and we didn't have to wait too long at the counter.

Yelp
Very nice vegan gluten-free cupcakes (two flavors) and coffees. The chocolate one (I want to try the vanilla next time) was dark and decadent with just the right amount of delectable frosting, topped with a few crunchy cacao nibs. The oatmilk latte was nice, maybe a little on the extra milky side but that's how I like them, and I had my choice of soy or oat milks. Mellow vibe with trip-hoppy music just loud enough to cover conversation. A few folks were hanging out, most grabbing treats to go.

Yelp
I ordered cupcakes for my nieces 1st birthday and was initially excited because they had a vegan option and the service was very kind (they offered candles and birthday toppers for the cupcakes). However when we got home and ate the cupcakes that day each and e ash cupcake was extremely DRY. barely edible and certainly not enjoyable. For the 7$ price tag it was most certainly not worth it.

Yelp
Terrible * Dry * No Flavor * Thick * I bought 4 for 4 of us Nobody finished their Cupcake So glad I went in when the Cupcakes were half off I would've been so mad if I paid full price The Staff were nice But it's one of those places where you don't know what pronouns to use

Yelp
Such a fun little cupcake shop!!! The cupcakes are sooooo good! I love the red velvet the cake is soft and the frosting melts in your mouth. The workers are always so nice and friendly. Must try spot!

Yelp
I have been a mega fan of Cupcake Royale for at least 13 years. I lived close by while I was attending the University of Washington and I'll have to say it was my favorite study aid. You have not had a cupcake until you have had one here. The flavors burst in your mouth along with the light fluffiness of the cake, the brilliant, conscientious, and fabulously inclusive creativity keeps you coming back. The service is always with a smile, they seem to always be having fun. The decor and ambiance of the shop make you want to stick around. My forever confectionery love is Cupcake Royale. No other has been able to compare.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream, yummy cupcakes! It is a little pricey but a great occasional treat. The shop is cute and cozy.

Yelp
Glad there's a Cupcake Royale in the Madona neighborhood, as it's a needed cafe for Stumptown coffee, working remotely, and of course, cupcakes. I visited Cupcake Royale before volunteering at the nearby school, as I was in desperate need of coffee. Located in the main business centre of Madrona, it's walking distance from the bus stops and other shops and restaurants. Though, parking is never an issue, as there is plenty of street parking around. They have Stumptown cold brew, which is what I ended up ordering, with a baby cake, a mini-size of a cupcake. It's the perfect size to curb any sweet tooth/snack. Just know that the baby cakes only come in the basic, original flavors of chocolate and vanilla, with either a chocolate or vanilla base. Chocolate on chocolate is always my fav, so am glad there's a baby cake for that! The cupcakes here are always good though. Flavors change daily, so it's worth a shot visiting often, to check out new and different flavors. I always find that the cupcakes are moist with a yummy buttercream frosting. Plus, there's ice cream. I'm a fan of Cupcake Royale, so am especially happy there's one in a neighborhood I frequent.

Yelp
This rating is for the donuts only- I love their cupcakes! I came here because I wanted to check out rodeo donuts. I was surprised at the small size of the donuts, but the price was appropriate, so I was fine with it. I ordered the lemon mascarpone strawberry buttermilk, and crispy chocolate. The crispy chocolate left a lot to be desired. The dough was dry and the toppings fell flat. The dough on the lemon was better, but somehow the combination of the glaze and filling tasted like I was eating a lemon cleaning product. The strawberry was actually decent, but again, the dough was a little dry. If you decide to come here, definitely stick to the cake donuts- that was the best texture option. But really, the cupcakes are a much better bet.

Yelp
I'm a fan of cupcake royale. I usually order them for coworkers' birthdays and special occasions, but sometimes I want to treat myself too. Their cupcakes are a little spendy, but i think that of cupcakes in Seattle in general. They're in the business to make delicious cupcakes but also to make money. I had their coffee for the first time today - the cold brew - and I can't get over how fruity it is. I had to check if they put anything else in it, but nope it's just coffee and water and whole lot of time to make it. I'm not a coffee connoisseur by any means, and have always laughed at tasting notes on the back label of coffee beans. Until now! Maybe I'm just not making coffee the right way at home? Anyway, this place knows what they're doing. And the barista was very nice, especially with it being so early in the morning. I'm glad to have this place in my neighborhood.

Yelp
As many have noted, overpriced for a cupcake but still a delicious splurge! I'm partial to the Royale with Cheese, if for no other reason than the Pulp Fiction reference :-)

Yelp
Sugar sugar and under-baked???! I think this was THE cupcake spot like 8 years ago? But not so much any longer.... the frosting was so darn sweet that we ended up scraping it off and honestly threw away 3/4 of our our 3 cupcakes. Too bad, waste of food and money. We had the lemon option, funfetti-pride vanilla, and a banana split. Neither of the 3 were really pretty enough to take a photo (I usually pull my phone out and take a snap before folks dig in and I realized that I didn't do that!) .. i did get a shot of their store front... :) The dough itself felt under baked; it was very dense and became super doughy once you started to chew - did not enjoy that consistency at all. Banana bread was better, but not by much. My kid (I mean kids LOVE sugar) scraped off the marshmallow topping complaining that it was too sweet. Their seating options were not thought through. Two small round tables and a long bench. Super hard to have an engaged conversation when 3 people are spread on a bench reaching towards a cup/plate on a small round table. They could definitely fit more seating areas there...not sure why they opted for this setup. Loved their compostable spoons/forks and cups/lids! Kudos for that! I need to plan better for a good desert spot.

Yelp
I am giving the place a 5 star review because of the ease of just being there. We walked in on Jan 1st at 11:30am. The gentleman at the counter was very friendly and easy to talk to. My wife ordered an espresso and a spinach pastry (yes, spinach!). I ordered a coffee and ham and cheese pastry. Neither were OMG, but were good enough. I have heard that because of the location close to a school they sell out of their cupcakes during the week. We live in the neighborhood and will go back! Again, the place is easy to deal with, no line, no drama, just order coffee, a snack, sit down for a while, then go on your way.

Yelp
the cupcakes and drinks are amazing but the baristas and customers always seem so uncomfortable in the heat. i will not return until the store gets air conditioning.

Yelp
my favorite cupcake spot in the seattle area! nothing beats the dance party cupcake! the red velvet is good as well. if you want GOOD quality batter & GOOD quality frosting then come to the bakery! (any location)

Yelp
Haven't had their cupcakes in a min, and my Fiancé surprises me with a box! Still hands down my fave cupcake place in Seattle. He got me Cookies and Cream and Tiramisu. OH SO moist!! And the creamiest frosting! Perfect balance without being overly sweet. It's definitely on the more expensive side but if you look at the size and presentation, it's worth it. Plus, how cute are their packaging?!?! So very instagram-worthy your feed won't disappoint.

Yelp
This place is dangerous, to be honest. You walk in and you might walk out 10 pounds heavier! This place is like heaven, the smells, the sights, the sounds, oh myyy! They have a large variety of cupcakes and frosting a and cakes and more! The cupcakes are delicious, we ordered chocolate, red velvet and vanilla and they were all so moist and delicious!!!! I don't recommend coming here too often haha unless you hit the gym afterwards! But it is worth the calories :)

Yelp
I love Cupcake Royale. I've enjoyed the Queen Anne and Capitol Hill location. Each neighborhood is going to have a different vibe. We were in the neighborhood looking at homes. This also happened to be on Valentine's Day. Probably the worst day to visit since they were going to be busy, possibly stressed. We personally didn't have a not so great experience. You could just tell there was some tension in keeping up with the demand. Folks behind the counter weren't as upbeat, and some of the people ahead of us in line were frustrated. Cupcakes were still on par. Got the salty caramel and red velvet, of course. Coffees were great. You can eventually find free 2 hour parking nearby. The space is darker than the other locations. There's couch/lounge seating towards the back with a mix of tables throughout the shop. There's also a bar style seating by the coffee pick up area. It's a quieter neighborhood location. At least this neighborhood has your cupcake and ice cream fix.

Yelp
Ordered trough Uber Eats. The business accepted my order of cupcakes as placed. When delivered there is a note written on the box that says we ran out of the cupcake you ordered. Please accept these instead. This is not ok. As a patron I get to decide what I purchase in your store. If you don't have the items I order you don't have the right to take my money and send me whatever you want.

Yelp
I have gone to the 34th Avenue location for years and loved every single visit, but in the last few months, the atmosphere in here has changed dramatically. The cupcakes and coffee etc. are still awesome, but the new manager (she must be the manager) doesn't make for a welcoming, relaxed environment. She talks really loudly, she doesn't say welcoming things to her customers, and she cleans the floor etc. without so much as a smile or a "sorry about this!" while she's tidying up right under your nose. I live only a few blocks away and have always loved to be in here, but the atmosphere has changed and that is very sad...! I met up there with a friend recently and we were surprised also by her brusque and almost imperious tone of voice with the counter person. Not okay...

Yelp
I just went to a wedding yesterday that served cupcakes from Cupcake Royale instead of wedding cake. I didn't know that they were from CR until the end of the night when they were loading up the leftovers in boxes. I was surprised, because I had anticipated when finally getting to try a CR cake, that it would be dry, as a lot of reviews indicate, however that was not the case. I must say that the cake part of the cupcake was my favorite. It was moist, delicious, and had a flavorful fined crumbed texture; similar to a cake made from a boxed cake mix, I think is a good thing, as those cakes have been tested and created to be a pretty perfect cake. The frosting was pretty standard; it tasted like a basic buttercream. As a person who likes to bake from scratch, I know baking is a lot more difficult than one thinks. Getting a home-made batter to turn out exactly how you want it to taste is a challenge. It takes a long time to perfect a baking recipe. For a bakery to come up with a pretty much perfect, scratch made cake, that is full of flavor and also has an amazing texture, now that's a work of art! I think a lot of places have mediocre cake but slather it with so much frosting it doesn't matter what the actual cake tastes like. CR definitely has the cake down. I'm a frosting girl myself; I love lots of frosting, however I could have eaten the cake part alone, it was that delicious. Now I need to try something else besides a standard vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream frosting. This is where I could see Trophy Cupcake having an edge, although I do think CR may have a better cake.
google avatar

Abigail G.

Yelp
The barista give great customer service. I am personally not a huge fan of buttercream, most of their frosting toppings are buttercream. I wish they had a toaster oven for their savory food options that takes less than 20-30 minutes to heat up one product. Good place to get birthday cupcakes! Sometimes they get extremely busy making a quick stop in the morning much longer.
google avatar

Nancy B.

Yelp
Coffeehouse atmosphere with AWESOME lattes!! (If this was a Coffee review I would give it 4 stars) The cupcakes were disappointing. We drove all the way from Auburn for the Maple Whiskey flavor of the month... There were plenty available... they even transported home well. Mini-cupcakes are cute, but the 'big' cupcakes are on the small size for hte price. (1 star deduction) The frosting was amazing... like a complex maple cream candy from Vermont... the cake portion... ick! All of the 6 varieties were dry, almost tasteless, and overshadowed the frosting. (2 star deduction)
google avatar

Yelp
We LOVE their ice cream. The cup cakes are delicious too. We will stop here every time we go to Seattle.
google avatar

Natalie G.

Yelp
Went here to enjoy a cappuccino and was surprised to find out they made gluten free cupcakes. They came in chocolate with three different choices for frosting including one with bacon. I chose the vanilla icing and it was a delicious butter-cream style yum! The cake part was moist and had a good flavor. They also have vegan cupcakes, normal cupcakes, a few pastries and cake balls. The service was friendly and fast but by the end of my stay kids were pouring in from the local schools that had just gotten out and they made the place noisy.
google avatar

Antares R.

Yelp
This place has a fantastic selection of cupcakes and brews delectable Stumptown roasts. Their pumpkin spice latte knocks the socks off of Starbucks' with their homemade mix of pumpkin puree and spices. They also make a great dirty chai, and a stellar iced americano. The hot cocoa is pretty dang good too. The fact that they have hemp milk is a game changer as well--it compliments the earthy notes of Stumptown roasts quite well, especially in spiced lattes. The baristas at this location are friendly and are happy to ensure that you are satisfied with your drink. The music they play is really good as well! Don't let the fact that they are primarily a cupcake bakery deter you, because everything from the espresso to the non-cupcake food items to the ambiance itself are all certainly excellent.

Jamie O.

Yelp
I have been to the Capitol Hill and Queen Anne locations and had a great experience and good cupcakes. I stopped by the Madrona location and the barista did not acknowledge me because he was too busy talking to a co-worker. When he was done he asked what I wanted. I asked him about the scanner and he failed to mention the Cupcake Royale app and quickly ended the conversation and turned back around before I could even grab my cupcake off the counter. He was very uninterested in anything but his conversation. I wanted to buy some CR loot but was too turned off by your staff's lack of customer service skills.
google avatar

Mindy E.

Yelp
The lemon buttercream was perfect. The cupcake? Bland, dry and crumbly. I went in around 1:00 p.m. and about 30% were gone. They said that they would have the cupcakes ready in about 10 minutes. I came back 45 minutes later and they only had 2 more flavors available.
google avatar

William R.

Yelp
I was here earlier today and witnessed the incident that Mark W. reported between his wife and the manager. His wife had already accosted another customer for talking on the phone outside the cafe "too loudly" before entering the cafe to use the restroom. She is apparently also consistently rude to all the staff. The restrooms were clearly closed as they were actively being cleaned and had strong chemical smells. The woman entered the restroom and immediately locked the door as the manager tried to explain that it was closed, she refused to come out because she was "already on the toilet". The comment that she said was about there being chemicals on the toilet. When she exited the restroom she got aggressive and threatening inches from the managers face. So, the manager her to leave. I don't think anyone was bothered by her being removed besides her and her entitled husband (lol look at the rest of his reviews, what a crotchety old man)
google avatar

Megan J.

Yelp
Fabulous!! As an "out of towner" this CR location is always one of my first stops after the airport. The quality and cupcakes are just as phenomenal as day one, you get what you pay for! And I love supporting this local business. Definitely a must visit and eat if you are new to Seattle!
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
There was nothing wrong with the food or coffee that was ordered. The location is cute and the atmosphere is fun, however the 2 baristas working when my friends and I came here really turned me off to this place. We were looking at the menu deciding and the female barista gave an eye roll when we said we needed a little time to decide. The guy working behind the counter asked my friend what she wanted and she said she was deciding, he then said alrighty then and walked off clearly irritated. These two were both just pieces of work to order with. Out of our group of 5, we all got the impression that we were not welcome to be in this coffee shop. This shop is absolutely somewhere I'd like to bring out of town visitors to, but I felt that the attitude from the staff the evening we came in on February 22 was extremely off putting. The low rating is based completely on the unfriendliness of the staff.

Alexa H.

Yelp
These cupcakes are amazing. The texture of the vanilla cake is somehow light and moist with a very fine crumb, a great bite. Dance party (vanilla cake, vanilla frost) is my favorite. Don't want a whole cupcake? Stop in for a babycake (mini cupcake)
google avatar

Joshua B.

Yelp
OK - who changed the cupcake mix here? They deserve a medal! (Actually, I heard from the owner they were working to make changes to the cupcakes in response to customer feedback). So, knowing that, I recently ordered two dozen for a party we were having. We picked out a variety of chocolate and vanilla cupcakes (again, the base, not the frosting) and everyone loved them. I can definitely attest to the fact that the cupcakes here about twice as good as before the change, as measured on my scientific cupcake-taste-o-meter. Much more moist, even a couple of days (eek!) after ordering, they still hold their appeal. Plus, the order was there when they said it would be, the people at the front counter were helpful and pleasant. The change in cupcake formulation (organic batter? better mix? secret illegal ingredients? Oompa Loompas paid better?) definitely fixed my main "issue" with Cupcake Royale. Again, can't eat these things every day, but for a party, or a special treat, they're awesome.
google avatar

Carrie L. B.

Yelp
When losing the cupcake wars, one would be well advised to step up the customer service. I can make better cupcakes on my own for CONSIDERABLY less money and attitude.
google avatar

Clover L.

Yelp
I always get great service here, and I think the cupcakes are delish. Coffee is also consistantly good and better yet, they have the best swag. A shirt that says 'These Cupcakes are Taken' I'm all over that.
google avatar

Kaz R.

Yelp
Omg this is the absolute worst chai I have encountered on this planet. No sweetener and tastes watery. Hadn't gotten coffee here and now I know why. There's no room for drinks this bad in Seattle. I have lived in Madrona forever and this isn't a neighborhood gem it's a overhyped place with nothing I need. I'm grateful for my coffee but only because it was brought to me by the love of my life. That's the only sweet thing about it.
google avatar

Chelsea J.

Yelp
The Madrona location has all the goods but is a little sleepier and more laid back than the Ballard location. I think I prefer this location although Ballard is my normal stop. With a trendier flair, the Madrona shop sets itself apart from other cupcake places. The employees were nice, the coffee was great (still Stumptown), and the cupcakes were so tasty! I like that the shop is tucked away in a quiet part of town.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
One of my favorite client meeting place. I've been here 3 times and each time is good experience. I wish I could afford a cupcake each time, but I typically just get a latte. Perhaps a special that offers a cupcake and latte together for a special price? Nevertheless, love the atmosphere, very friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
if u want to find a chill place to find a delicious sweet treat this is the place! i got their seasonal "death cake" and it was delicious. u buy it in a jar and then u have to take it home, but it's a definitely worth it to only cook 30 seconds in the microwave. one thing i will say is the service is kind of slow. there weren't many people there but i guess there was only worker in there. overall, this place is great, good desserts, sandwiches, everything!! would highly recommend.
google avatar

Zachary Sam Z.

Yelp
I was trying to think of something to take to a potluck, and a friend suggested cupcakes. I was skeptical, until she took me on CR's website and showed me what I'd be getting. I got one dozen to bring into work just for fun -they were a huge hit! The second dozen I took to the potluck, and while there was generally too much food there, the cupcakes were easily the most popular. There's something to be said about having the most popular dish. And that something is, AWESOME. The place looked nice enough, although I agree with the sentiment that it feels cold because of all the concrete. But would I come here to hang out? Maybe, if I felt like a short 2 mile walk to get there... but with so many coffee shops closer by, I doubt I'd make the trip. Probably not worth driving unless I'm picking up some cupcakes. If I had one wish, it would be to have yummy cupcakes closer by. I guess I'll have to settle for Top Pot donuts one block over...
google avatar

Yuri T.

Yelp
mehh *shrug* i thought that the cupcakes were alittle dry... kinda bleh. I base my cupcakes on red velvet and it just was alittle disappointing.
google avatar

Angie B.

Yelp
I give this 4 stars mostly for the fact that the people are friendly & that they make "babycakes". Coffee is pretty good & the cupcakes are cute, but not the tastiest I've ever had. I was able to order 2 dozen babycakes just a few hours before a recent party. Much like Red Balloon Company, I figured I would need to give a credit card number when I called, but they just got everything ready for me & that was that. Honestly made me a little nervous, but it was ready to go as I was running around like crazy at the last minute. Madrona Playground/park across the street is one of our 2 year old's favorites (gotta love that sand pit!), so it is nice to stroll over for a cup of Stumptown coffee & a babycake while we watch the kiddos play.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
I love Cupcake Royale (I already have a review on their Ballard location). This location is a lot closer to my house, but they run out of everything! I went at noon last Saturday, and they were already out of Red Velvet :( I seriously thought they were joking when they said they were out of a flavor already. I went again this past Saturday at about 5 p.m. (they are open until 9) and all they had left were the flavor of the month, lavender and like 1 of the classic (white with chocolate frosting). My husband loves the carrot, and he was disappointed that we drove 30 minutes through traffic, and they didn't have what either one of us wanted.
google avatar

Kelly K.

Yelp
I was excited. Female bonding location. Pink boxes. Must try. Don't eat the cupcakes without liquid nearby. That was my discovery. DRY. Like Death Valley. I had a Chocolate with mint frosting, what I assumed would be a taste sensation. NOT. I give them two stars for their creative marketing, and their great t-shits. Legalize Frostitution. It brought me in.
google avatar

Jules R.

Yelp
I think CR changed their cake recipe because last night my cupcake was super moist and perfectly textured. Gotta love the lavender buttercream frosting. It was a pleasant surprise - I remember being underwhelmed the last time I visited Cupcake Royale. Also they were having happy hour when I went in and that means buy three get three free. This could be a bad, bad thing. I told the sweetie working there that we had just moved into the neighborhood and she was really nice and made me the perfect latte to go along with the sweets. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
INTRO: There are like a million cupcake places in Seattle, but I think we all know there are two main contenders: CR and TC. I'm going to review both and start them both with this intro, because it's a compare/contrast thing as far as I am concerned. Ask yourself this: Are you in it for the cake or the frosting? I am of the opinion that the cake is just a way to get the delicious, delicious frosting to my piehole. Or, I guess, cupcakehole. Cupcake Royale's cake is not the best. It's like, maybe 3 out of 5. It can be a little dry, a little flavorless. It's okay. But their frosting! It is the frosting of which dreams are made. Light, fluffy, sugary, sweet, like a frosting cloud, made of heaven and delivered to my tongue. 5 out of 5 - no, 6 out of 5. I will keep going to CR for their frosting, even if the cake gets so bad that I just have to lick the frosting off and dispose of the bottom. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Yelp
Cupcakes rock! One learns this at a tender age. In elementary school cupcakes were usually shared amongst classmates to celebrate a birthday. Everyone would get their very own piece of heaven. To take things further, not that cupcakes really need to be qualified as one of the all time best edible treasures or anything, but, cupcakes can be decorated individually, making each one unique. A friend of mine who shares my views on cupcake, little idiosyncratic baked goods that they are, decided to join me on an adventure to the famed Cupcake Royale. We hopped the #2 to head to the quaint neighborhood of Madrona. The location is nice. A hip cafe on the same street as a few other places on a leafy street. Kids were running in and out while scenesters on both sides of the counter dotted the cafes landscape. We each ordered two cupcakes and a cup of coffee. If we were going to do this thing, we were going to do this thing right. I purchased a Lavender and an Orange cream cupcake. My friend ordered a chocolate and a vanilla. Armed and ready for some serious noshing we copped a squat and bit down. Sadly, after all we had been waiting for neither of us wanted to let each other down by sharing our honest report of the cupcakes. They were awful. I could only describe the treats as cornmeal muffins with frosting. My friend agreed. However, I opted to give Cupcake Royale another go. I wasn't expecting a Magnolia Bakery experience. After all people had said I thought that I would test the waters again. I visited the Ballard location. Not to be put off by the misanthropic hipster who waited was manning the counter, I ordered my cupcake and gave Cupcake Royale another go. I relived disappointment. Oh! Cupcake Royale, why couldn't you live up to the hype, especially since you inhabit a cafe with such an excellent logo. I have since learned that when I want a cupcake I head to Trophy Cupcake in Wallingford Center or Remedy Tea for a vegan version.

Yelp
Here I am at 8 am Sunday morning hoping for my morning coffee. The sign says it opens at 7:00 but no one is here. As a Madrona resident I've had this happen here a lot. Morning shift parties too hard on Saturday night again? Couldn't be bothered to come in? Gets tiresome.

Yelp
Toooooooo sweeeeeeeet! I don't like overly sweet desserts, and their cupcakes were way too sweet.. I actually felt sick half-way through eating one. I've gone back a couple of times to see if it was just the flavor I chose, but I was dead wrong- they were all like that. I would've given them 2 stars because the coffee is good, but Stumptown's responsible for that not Verite.

Yelp
I special ordered a box of 30 mini cupcakes for my 25th birthday to share with my class. Some people enjoyed it, some complained. I however, was not impressed. I thought they were very small, dry and way overpriced. That day I learned from my wise professor that Trophy Cupcakes was the way to go. I've only been back to Cupcake Royale once to try their Lavender cupcake. I thought, "Hey, I love the scent of lavender! I bet it'd taste great!" Boy was I wrong, it tasted like soap on chocolate cake. Yuck. Oh, and it was dry too.
