"A cornerstone coffeeshop of the Bryn Mawr neighborhood, Cuppa Java serves espresso drinks, coffee, malts, and food out of a cozy storefront on Penn Avenue. The lunch menu features sandwich staples like Reubens, BLTs, and tuna melts — beer and wine are also served for the evening crowd." - Justine Jones

I love it here. The food and coffee is so good. I ordered a breakfast bagel and a latte. Sat outside with my dog and people watched. Street parking isn’t that bad but it was a Sunday afternoon so maybe would be busier at another time. It just seemed so cozy like a true coffee shop. Would definitely recommend!

Sponge bob Square pants

Google
my most favorite chai i’ve ever tried! and their caramel sauce is so good i unfortunately always ask for extra. My friend got their marshmallow chai which tastes like ice cream, definitely on the sweeter side and more of a dessert than everyday drink. it gets crowded at certain times especially around lunch hour and the place is on the smaller side so i’d be wary of that if you’re in a. time crunch, otherwise wonderful cafe and staff!

This little coffee shop is always on my list of places to stop by if I'm I in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood. The service is always friendly and the food options are great. There's a steady stream of regulars so you know it's good! My go to sandwich for lunch is the Tuna Melt. I love that you can pick your bread, cheese, and if you want onions and tomatoes.

We visited on Sunday, August 25th, around brunch time, eager to try this place as a new coffee spot. However, due to the extremely humid weather, we decided to order a sandwich and lemonade instead. The food was good, and the service was attentive despite how busy it was. The space is cozy, and although it was crowded, we chose to sit indoors to avoid the humidity. We enjoyed our experience and look forward to returning on a less busy day to try their coffee offerings!

Google
It’s a great neighborhood place. The staff is engaging and has great recommendations. It’s busy but one can just about always find a table immediately. Lots of people use it as their office-away-from home - it’s easy to see why. There’s a nice atmosphere in the place, and the windows for watching the street scenes are beautiful.

Google
So lucky that this is my neighborhood coffee shop. The food is simple and delish - love the BLT with avocado and their Sloppy Joe. Excellent breakfast sandwiches and coffee. Yummy chocolate malts and fruit smoothies for the kids in the summer. But best of all is the atmo - good vibes, friendly folk from ALL walks of life and big giant sunny windows to watch the world go by. Love you Cuppa!

Google
I just stopped for a light quick lunch. Ordered a turkey sandwich to-go. On my way to work. Damn! This is one helluva sandwich. Everything is so fresh and crisp! Truly delightful!

Google
Good vibe.. Wish we could give half stars, because this is a solid 4.5 stars. Overheard some interesting conversations. Solid selection of eats and drinks.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here for a morning coffee date! This place is one of our favorites and stays busy! The service is always great as well as the bakery items, coffee, and food! They have a nice patio area outside as well as seating indoors. We got the breakfast croissant, blueberry bread, and coffee! Everything was great! Highly recommend this place for small coffee gathering or a little 1:1 date.

Yelp
My family and I stopped by Cuppa Java to meet a friend while in town for a wedding on a busy Saturday morning. I think the ideal time to visit this popular coffee shop would be during an off time as it was very busy with folks enjoying a really pleasant early summer morning. We sat outside because it was so packed, and also because the weather was truly perfect. Just thinking about early June weather has me prepped and ready for it to cool off again! That being said, I can't speak much to the ambiance as I gave my order to my husband and took a seat outside with our daughter as the line was nearly out the door. We ordered a breakfast sandwich, a pastry, and each of us had an iced coffee. My coffee was really good - about what you expect for an iced coffee, and I remember the sandwich being really tasty. I think what makes this place stand out the most is how adorable it is and how it fits just perfectly into the neighborhood. I'd never been to this part of Minneapolis before and I absolutely loved the charm of this neighborhood. It felt very lived in, and I enjoyed how many people I saw out and about walking their dogs or taking their kids to the park on a weekend morning. I would absolutely return to this place next time I'm in the Twin Cities. I feel like it would be the perfect spot for an evening coffee date on a cold MN night - it just has this charm to it that I think would fit the bill, especially if it wasn't busy and you had time to really savor the pastries and your coffee.

Yelp
Grabbed coffee and a breakfast sandwich with some friends over the weekend. The sausage, egg, and cheese croissant was so good! I had an iced caramel latte to wash it down. It's on a corner and the inside lends to a lot of character and not a cookie cutter place like a lot of new shops these days. The staff were super nice and helpful! Definitely will be back to spend a little more time and chill with a book and coffee.

Yelp
Cuppa Java is a nice neighborhood coffee shop and hangout. Coffee is great and they off some pretty good breakfast options. I would recommend ordering food ahead of time as it can get pretty busy here and it's not exactly fastfood.

Yelp
Cute place, great coffee, great service. All the baristas I interacted with were so incredibly kind. I got the tuna melt and it was MASSIVE, which was very exciting for $13. I was expecting half the amount! Sat and read my book for a few hours. Great people watching here too. Tuck yourself away and enjoy.

Yelp
Always love stopping by this locally owned coffee shop. They have many drinks besides coffee and a nice light breakfast and lunch/dinner menu. I decided to order an americano coffee and the sloppy Joe. The coffee was as fresh and delish as always. The sloppy Joe was also fresh and came with potato chips. The sandwich came on a nice bun and was full of chunks of the sloppy Joe mix. The staff are awesome and I def recommend a stop here!!

Yelp
An adorable little neighborhood spot in the Bryn Mawr area near Theo Wirth! Came here with some friends to get a little work done and fell in love. This sweet spot is on the corner with a few other shops nearby, but it definitely stands out. Service: Wonderful! The cashier was friendly and recommended certain pastries, the baristas were quick. They closed at 3 and we were still working, so the staff let us sit outside with our drinks after closing. Goodies: So many baked goods that surprisingly weren't too picked over for an hour before closing on a Sunday! I tried the GF brownie and was VERY pleasantly surprised to find it had a caramel layer on top. The other food items looked delish too. Drinks: I got an iced chai and the two that joined me got a hot chai and a cold brew. All great flavor and no complaints here. Seating: This spot is best for groups of 2-3! Several two-top tables inside lining the windows, one larger table back in the corner, and tables outside on both sides of the building. Support this quaint local spot!

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop on earth. They have great coffee, amazing breakfast items & plenty of seating. In the evening they have different events going on - such a fun spot! Parking is street parking, but there is plenty of space on either side of the coffee shop. It's also easy to walk to if you're in the area. The staff is always friendly and made a huge impact on my mom who stopped here while in the cities - she said they have the best chai tea around!
google avatar

Katherine C.

Yelp
My friend and I came here because it's one of the few coffee shops that are open later than 5pm. She ordered the chai and I ordered a turtle mocha. She said she likes the chai here because it's creamy but not too sweet. The turtle mocha I got was okay, nothing special but a solid drink (although definitely on the sweet side). They did have a good array of pastries that I wish I had tried. However, my friend ordered the chicken tenders and described it with the words "tastes like Tyson" - not impressive for $8.50. Did leave me pretty skeptical about the food but maybe it just was not the right thing to order. While small it has a good amount of tables and chairs for the space, although most if not all the tables are for 2 people so bigger groups might have more a problem finding seating. Street parking is pretty easy on the street and in the surrounding areas, although the shop itself is located at the triangle corner of an intersection. Overall a decent neighborhood coffee shop and a someplace to go if you're looking for a coffeeshop vibe or a place to do work in the evening. I don't think I was too big of a fan of the drinks and the chicken tenders were disappointing to say the least, but maybe we just picked the wrong things to get there.

Yelp
Best place to enjoy a great French Roast along with a Blueberry Scone with a friend or 2. The lunches are great and nutritional. I've enjoyed the Veggie Hummus sandwich being vegan but my friends have tried the Cuban (Cubano) or the "tasty" Tuna Melt. As most coffee shops are it can get noisy when the coffee grinder is going but I've solved many of the world's problems sitting here for 2 to 3 hours with friends in this "cubby hole" dark old fashioned place on a corner in Bryn Mawr neighborhood off Penn. Lots of street parking available. I love going home with the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans imbued into my leather jacket. I hope this place never changes. One more thing; since I often occupy a table for a bit of time I'm a heavy tipper....50% sometimes, but I want to be fair and not die with a guilty conscience :).

Yelp
A group of friends and I have met here three times now. Worth a review! The muffins are delicious, the iced mochas are on-point. We will be back. Lovely neighborhood vibe.

Yelp
They call their red eye a 'slap in the face' (love it!) I personally had a white cloud, which is a sweet coffee (white chocolate and toasted marshmallow) and would recommend it to my boujee people swinging by.
google avatar

Sam T.

Yelp
Really delicious laid back spot to go for a cup of coffee or a sandwich for lunch. The bread for the sandwiches is amazing, tastes really fresh. Their pastries are tasty as well and have a great variety of muffins, scones, and other desserts.
google avatar

Yelp
Great local coffee shop! Very friendly staff and a good space (both inside and a sidewalk patio in warmer months) for working or chatting with a friend. They stay fairly busy- always several folks seated and at least one person already ordering when I walk in- but if I'm meaning to dine-in I've always still found a place to sit. So it's a good balance. They make good almond milk lattes and even have some gluten free treats (the brownies are amazingly chocolatey). They also have some savory food options- but I have never tried them. North Minneapolis doesn't have much in the way of coffee shops so we're very happy to have this place tucked into a corner of Bryn Mawr!

Yelp
Cute Small Local Delicious Cheap Cant complain, amazing service with a knowledgeable staff. Coffee was a little sugary but you get what you order for sure. Sandwich was on par with any deli that you can find. Much better prices and portions than any chain place. Definitely recommend for breakfast, studying, lunch. This is a no doubt location.

Abby V.

Yelp
The coffee was really good - I got a breakfast croissant that was also pretty good. The ambiance is really quaint and wholesome and a few outdoor seating options as well. I recommend

Yelp
Great place, for Conversation and delicious food looking forward to go in the evening and try the dinner menu, wine, and the beer
google avatar

Yelp
This is a great little place if you happen to catch them when they're open. Very inconsistent hours. It's extremely frustrating to get there and find that they are closed. The posted hours mean nothing.

Bridget U.

Yelp
Friendly service and great food. Had the Reuben today and it was five star - crispy bread and stellar flavor.
google avatar

Katy F.

Yelp
Wonderful little corner coffee joint! I came here on a Thursday morning and it was quite busy. They have a good selection of baked goods and sandwiches, which all seemed very fresh. My drinks were served very quickly, but I did end up waiting about 10-15 minutes for my breakfast sandwiches. If you have a little more time to wait or are in the area, I recommend stopping by and grabbing a drink to-go!
google avatar

Yelp
Popped into Cuppa Java on a whim, and was met with a clean, well kept, and trendy shop. A perfect spot for Sunday afternoon reading. Others were working on computers, studying, and chatting with their companion. I ordered drip coffee & a muffin. Unlike some of the baked goods which are brought in, the muffins are made in-house. I enjoyed my lemon poppy seed muffin- perfect crust on the top followed my a fluffy & moist bite. Will definitely visit again. There was nothing I saw that set this shop apart from others to earn the fifth star, but is a really excellent spot & I would recommend!

Yelp
Love. Love me a Chi Latte and gluten free muffin on my monthly visits to the neighborhood for a hair cut by Juliette. I look forward to this visit. The guys with together so well and keep things moving with a relaxing easy energy. It's my monthly refresher inside and out! Best Chi Latte anywhere. They also have gluten free sandwiches, salads, and glutenous items as well.

Yelp
This is the kind of neighborhood coffee shop that I wish existed within easy walking (or at least bicycling) distance from my home. Excellent espresso drinks, hearty sandwiches, delicious baked goods all served by friendly, laid back staff in a cozy somewhat ramshackle (but clean and uncluttered!) environment that encourages lingering. While my reviews tend to run toward the verbose, this one's short and sweet. Great place. Great people. Great Vibes. 'Nuff said.
google avatar

Jessie M.

Yelp
Just moved to the area and these guys are awesome! Great breakfast sandwiches, super fast lattes, and hard to resist treats that are worth breaking for lol. $5 breakfast croissant sandwiches... umm, yes please!
google avatar

Kelsey K.

Yelp
This is a cute little shop perfect for stoping in for a nice cup of coffee and meet with a friend for lunch or a quick take out. I love coming here when I'm craving a soup and sandwich for lunch. I was in awe when they had split pea soup as their special. Oh my goshhh no place ever has split pea soup and man, it was sooo delicious. It really hit the spot. The inside has a cute, modern feel to it. There are mostly small, two-person tables around a small space so it can get a little tight. There is usually plenty of free street parking around there so thats never an issue. The prices are just right, service fast, and menu delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is tucked away on a corner drive by it occasionally. I was hungry today... got a late start on breakfast. I ordered their you make it breakfast bagel (or croissant). I had provolone cheese egg and turkey. Sandwich was made on the spot ...hot not dry... toasted just right. Very Good! As I stated earlier you can order your own sandwich with choices of cheese and meat for just under $5 bucks. I also ordered a hot Chai tea also very good. All in all I spent a little over $8 dollars. This place has breakfast and lunch items on thier menu again made fresh on site. The crew is very friendly, inside is a bit small but cozy with outside seating... but parking can be tricky the establishment is located on a 4 way corner (street parking).
google avatar

Katie B.

Yelp
COVID times take out. We got two breakfast sandwiches on croissants which were *chef's kiss* delish. I don't eat meat, so they offered to sub avocado and tomato which I greatly appreciated. I got an iced latte with oat milk, honey and cinnamon. The barista made my latte perfectly - adding the hot espresso to the honey so that it dissolved into the drink. It was SO GOOD!! I can't wait to go back. I also thought the prices were very fair for the neighborhood.

Yelp
Usually I don't like to talk about my favorite spot cause then people would start going there regularly :( lol...The place is located in Bryn Mawr, it is a very cute and quiet area. The space inside is perfect. There is a flat screen tv for people to watch at the bar. There is about 12 small tables for people to do work/school related stuff. Half of this place is bright with big windows and the other half is dark toward the back area. There is a tiny room in the back where you could have intimate talk. It's a little escape from the crowd. I would see people bringing their family here and pets, too. During the summer time you could sit outside and enjoy a nice fresh air. I almost forgot to mention about their music, old school...love it! The crowd here is 25 years and older...I think :) I enjoy their Asian Salad a lot. Big portion. They have a good selection of sandwiches with reasonably priced. They serve beer and wine, too. And make sure to check out their happy hour time for drinks. Usually I come here to get their Chai Soy. I think this place have the BEST Iced Chai Soy in the twin cities. Yes, I am addicted! Definitely way better than Kopplin in St Paul. Also, I love, love, love their Pistachio Muffin! Oh my unbelievably good! Please try them. The staff is ah-mah-zing! They are unique. I think they know me by now cause I always get the same order :) If you need cash, there is an atm machine. Also, they sell hallmark/greeting cards next to the machine. This neighborhood is very unique and that's why I love it! Make sure to check out Trappings (men's clothing-1926's style) after you make a stop at Cuppa Java :) Street parking

Yelp
In a town full of great coffee stops, this joint stands out. Yummy tuna melt, served open faced on toasted wheat bread.
google avatar

Yelp
Roses are red, Violets are blue...blahhh I feel lame already. Without as much sass and pizzazz as my last attempt to review this place, all I gotta say is that Cuppa Java got me hooked. First, the food and the drinks are all amazing. I've been there for more times than I dare say and I've yet to come across an item that I don't like. As for the ambience, the compactness of the space helps to heighten the sense of intimacy but the windows are big enough to not make you feel claustrophobic. That combination is just the right level for me to focus on my work without losing my mind from concentrating on the screen all the time. And, yes, the people who work there are super-friendly and nice. All in all, this place rocked 5 solid stars from me.
google avatar

May H.

Yelp
Their sandwiches are really good and staffs are really friendly. Chai latte blend is also one of the best I've tried.
google avatar

Maggie M.

Yelp
Super friendly spot, they know you by name if you're a regular. Awesome tea selection and they have a yummy (huge) oatmeal. I like coming with friends and just chatting in one of their comfy booths or if it's nice outside they have tables outside too.
google avatar

Blaine J.

Yelp
In addition to deliciously roasted coffee and excellent barista, we got a couple of sandwiches to go. We enjoyed a grilled pear & swiss cheese as well as the chicken curry. Both sandwiches were excellent. We will def. be back. Great service, great product, great neighborhood.
google avatar

Dylan F.

Yelp
CHAI TIME! The absolute best chai in the world, mouth watering delicious! They also have amazing baked goods (the pistachio muffin is my fav)
google avatar

Mary K.

Yelp
Great coffee!!--we are from the Pacific Northwest and I thought it would be hard to find great coffee in MN--this place was phenomenal--much better than Starbucks!
google avatar

Leah F.

Yelp
Love this coffee shop. The food is always amazing. Egg croissants and homemade soups are our favorite.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
I hadn't realized that they offered sandwiches until I was looking at some of the reviews of local coffee shops. The Cubano is exquisite, and if it is that good then I'm going to have to come back and try their Reuben. My large skinny almond latte was perfectly prepared; nice soft mouthfeel, just a dollop of foam, hot without being scalding, although a bit lacking on the latte art. Too bad they don't serve in a mug. The cafe has a corner entrance and is shaped like a triangle. Seating isn't overly comfortable, but there is sufficient room to work. If you want a bit of privacy then there is a small table and two comfy chairs in the back apex of the triangle.
google avatar

Savannah B.

Yelp
This hip yet quaint local coffee shop and eatery is my favorite! Great service, location, and atmosphere.
google avatar

Yelp
Cuppa is a pretty descent coffee shop to have around. I live in the neighborhood and come here often for the convenience. What they do well is provide a fantastic community vibe and gathering space. The crew her is great and always friendly. I'd love to see an increased focus on quality of ingredients and food as well as coffee. A great loose leaf tea selection would be just fantasculous as well. If you a connoisseur of coffee or food, you're not going to be impressed. If you want a descent coffee and or sandwich in a place with a good vibe, you'll be fully satisfied. It's totally affordable and I'd pay a bit more of things to get a local/organic ingredient list. My go to safe bet is the Rachel Sandwich
google avatar

Debelah T.

Yelp
This is a delightful place to sit around and drink a cup of coffee. I don't frequent coffee shops due to my budget, but if I could, this would be one of the first choices. Of all of the coffee shops I've ever been to, this one is up there as one of the best. Everything about it is so good. The place is well-kept and maintained. It feels like an average independantly owned coffee place but better (best way I can put it). The servers are friendly. I love the ones who work there during the early evening. The coffee itself tastes yummy. I ordered mocha latte, and it's the best. I've met the owner Robert. He was a cool guy and delightful to be around. I highly recommend this place to anyone! This coffee shop is fantastic!
google avatar

Dave P.

Yelp
Great coffee shop, with good menu to boot. Great service too. I asked for cream with my order, they didn't have it, so they ran across the street and bought some from the market for me. That's customer first.

Colleen C.

Yelp
Cuppa Java is a busy corner cafe with friendly, fast service and a nice breakfast sandwich. My croissant was lightly toasted, not heavy/greasy, with egg and crispy bacon. I accompanied it with Mount Oko coffee - the feature of the day. The crew was humming, working fast without seeming hurried. My sandwich was brought to my table shortly after I sat down with my self- prepared mug of java. Mugs in house are not only environmentally friendly, they add to the comfort of sitting with a cuppa to start the morning. Sandwich and coffee totaled $7. Plenty of seating inside and out. Mostly 2 seat tables, but a few larger and a couple of cushy chairs, if that is what you prefer. A mix of people running in to grab a drink, others plugged in to do work, and a fair share of friends meeting up and hanging out. I will return!!! Great food, great service, great vibe!
google avatar

Yelp
What a gem! Great coffee, fantastic food, wonderful service, hip atmosphere, friendly staff, and excellent patrons! Plenty of indoor and outdoor patio seating. All around a lovely experience.

Yelp
I stopped in for lunch today. The young guy behind the counter is in the wrong job as his customer service is lacking. I order a cup of chicken wild rice soup and a BLT. My food took a bit to come out, and alas when it arrives, my soup was warm at best and my BLT was a grilled cheese. Food tasted good, but a BLT is entirely different than a grilled cheese. In case staff or management see this I was number 21 at around 12:40pm 6/12/19. I had debated the whole ride there on BLT or Pizza from across the street. I made a poor decision.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Love this place. Stopped with a friend who lives in the Bryn Mawr neighborhood. A warm neighborhood place. We had vegetable beef soup, tomato soup, half a tuna fish sandwish and half a chicken curry sandwich along with coffee. Bill was $ 13. The soups were yyummy (it is a rainy day, so soup was a must). They had lots of flavor. The chicken curry sandwich was right on target. I love chicken curry but it is difficult to find. Met the owners. They not only own the restaurant, they are the cooks and they live in the neighborhood. Excellent food, excellent coffee, excellent atmosphere. Small business owners who are serving the neighborhood. Patronize them.

Yelp
Fantastic place .... very friendly service .... good breakfast and lunch options ... will be a regular

Ashley H.

Yelp
The ladies that made my lunch and coffee killed it! I just swung in to drop something off and decided to get a coffee since I was there anyways. The coffee was so good that it made me want to try their lunch. I ordered a buffalo chicken sandwich and OH MT GOODNESS! It was so delicious, fresh and fast service. Next time I'm in town I'll be going back for sure! Even though you cannot stay because of covid 19 the vibe in this place is awesome. Another amazing hole in the wall you have to check out. Not to mention super clean and a reasonable price for what you're getting, you won't regret it!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Lovely neighborhood coffee shop with some terrific food. Excellent pistachio muffin and vegetarian breakfast sandwich on a croissant (tomato and avacado). Reasonable prices.
google avatar

Corie H.

Yelp
The food is always fresh and made with QUALITY ingredients, veggies, meat, etc. I have lunch here at least twice a week and have never left feeling unsatisfied. Blueberry muffin is the best I've ever had, I also love the breakfast croissants, turkey & Swiss melt and the turkey wild rice soup. I work at a local clinic and when my coworkers go to lunch this is usually the chosen place. Atmosphere of people is mixed variety of young and old, hipsters and professionals. The actual cafe is cozy, clean, spacious, adequate sidewalk/patio space, good music playing. Staff is ALWAYS friendly and accommodating if you have special requests with your order.

Yelp
First Impression: Thumbs up! Let's do the math: Coffee shop atmosphere, patio (some sun, some shade), simple menu with some seriously LEGIT options (I had the breakfast sandwich on croissant... hit. the. spot.), drinks, pasteries = a great informal, chill spot. Notes: They got a reuban. I didn't get it yet but my buddy did and it looked fantastic. I WILL be returning to demolish one. Shout out to all the yelpers on this one. Stopped here due to proximity to the Surly Trail Loppet mostly because the great reviews and suggestions.
