Where to Eat and Drink in Salida and Buena Vista | Eater Denver

"A big beer selection, lively patio, and nightly fish specials make this spot sort of like Salida’s seafood shack — only less breezy beach town and more cozy mountain tavern." - Josie Sexton

The artichoke dip was delicious. The fish and chips were off the chain, along with, the wedge salad!!

Google
I ordered the strawberry lemon drop, spinach artichoke dip, and French dip sandwich. My husband ordered fish and chips. The bartender was our server. He made an amazing strawberry Lemon drop. The food was gross. Couldn’t eat more than one bite and I’ve never had a French dip sandwich I didn’t like before. Zero flavor.

Always satisfied with my food here. Highly recommend the calamari, mussels, salmon wrap, fried chicken, and chicken pot pie. The chicken pot pie is a bit on the smaller side if you’ve got a big appetite. Great cocktails. Good service.

Our visit to Currents in Salida, Colorado was thoroughly enjoyable. We opted for outdoor seating and were delighted by the serene atmosphere. Noah, our server, was exceptional—attentive and friendly throughout our meal. The French onion soup was a standout, with its rich flavor and cheesy goodness. The fish and chips were tasty, although they could have been a touch less greasy for our liking. My wife ordered the veggie wrap, which was decent but could have used something else to make it truly shine. Overall, Currents offers a pleasant dining experience with its welcoming outdoor setting, delicious food, and excellent service. We look forward to returning to try more from their menu!

Google
Food is great. Every dish, appetizer or entree, was absolutely delicious. I’d have the recommend every dish I tried. For appetizers, I recommend the spinach and artichoke dip that comes with naan on the side. The dip is super warm and flavorful and the naan is great. For entrees, my dad and I shared the fish and chips, which was SOOO good. The fish was perfectly battered and super crunchy. The fries were super crunchy and well seasoned too. My mom ordered the chicken borracho sandwich, and even though I didn’t try it, she really liked it. Service here was great. There were only two waitresses but they were fast and nice.

If I could give this place 6 stars I would. If you can only make it to one place in town, this is the one to go to. Nice bar and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I was greeted by the friendliest bartender I’ve ever met, I believe his name is Diamond. The atmosphere is lively and the patrons are friendly. I had a sour beer on tap and the sirloin, substituting a salad with ranch dressing instead of the veggies, with mashed potatoes. The side salad it came with was huge, and the picture I took was after I’d already eaten half. The sirloin was one of the tastiest steaks I’ve ever had, and the mashed potatoes were delicious, too. Diamond was so thoughtful he even rinsed and wiped off the outside of my glass because beer spilled down the side when he poured it. This place feels a little magical - everyone here seems to be in a good mood, and it’s definitely the place that would be “my bar” if I lived here. Will absolutely be back! Thank you for the wonderful food and kindness!

Google
Bar service was very friendly and the cocktails that we had were quite good. We were going to order dinner but opted not to after watching the very un-hygienic kitchen team sneezing, touching their faces, ears, hair, and not a latex glove in sight. Yeah we’re in a cool mountain town but seriously- some of these entrees are $40 plus. Open kitchens are great- so long as you’re showcasing the right stuff. In this case, nope. We took our dinner order elsewhere, which sucks for the bar staff who could have had a much bigger tab from us.

Google
I visited Salida for the first time, and we happened upon this fine establishment. The appetizers were amazing. The mussels were fantastic, and were served in an amazing sauce! The calamari were fried perfectly, and the artichoke dip was delicious. I wish I could’ve tried one of every appetizer. I split a veggie wrap with my wife and added bacon to my side (my wife is vegetarian). The service was also excellent, even on a super busy July 4th weekend. All in all we had a great dining experience!

Yelp
Delicious!!!!!! Get the mussels!!!!! I was slurping the mussels and eating the remaining broth with a spoon. Thank you Mindy for your warm service!

Yelp
Good: outside seating on the street. Bad: the food was extremely salty. I wouldn't eat there again.

Yelp
We arrived into Salida for one night and we were looking for a place to eat. We saw this place and decided to give it a shot. It's a very laid back atmosphere. Open seating and since we came later in the night we had a choice of tables. I ordered the fried chicken platter which is a breast of chicken with panko breading on mashed potato's with gravy on top. I got it with Nashville hot sauce. I thought it was average. The flavor was bland if not for the hot sauce which they charge an extra dollar for. Again, cheesy business practice. My wife got a salad and she said it was average too. Service was too pushy in the beginning and then too relaxed during the meal. You can't find a server if you need something. I ordered a Diet Coke and for me that's like a wine so if the carbonation to sweetness ratio is off it can ruin my whole dining experience, which happened. And the server wasn't in a hurry to tell me the soda dispenser wasn't working correctly.i had to ask her. Another big issue for me is they want everyone to pay with cash or they rack on 3.5% to the bill if you use a debit/credit card which I think sucks. We live in a digital world and you gouge people for using a card or you could "go take money out of their atm" at a flat rate fee. I think this type of business practice is shady and I will never go here again because of it.

Yelp
Food was excellent. We also had spinach artichoke dip, served with flatbread which was very good. Service was prompt and friendly, Thursday night and the place was packed! Full bar menu with many specialty drinks. Family friendly in an upbeat hipster atmosphere. We will return when in the area.

Yelp
Killer Mother's Day on the patio. The Hamburger was fantastic and the Borrago Chicken was great but by far the Poke' was the best. Top spot for lunch
google avatar

Yelp
Stellar Salida restaurant with great food, drinks and servers. The wedge salad was out of this world with warm huge amounts of real bacon. The poutine was sensational with great tasting fries and lots of yummy toppings. The full order of the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy was spot on. Had a great double IPA and spicy bloody Mary. Everything was just amazing. Loved sitting outside and enjoying the summer night air. A Salida fave for sure.

Yelp
When the cup of green chili my boyfriend ordered turned out to be a tiny ramekin of green chili, that kinda set the tone. Service, I must say, was good. Attentive but not intrusive. Patient and friendly. We started with the soup, took our time with a couple of drinks, and then decided to order dinner. My chicken pot pie was decent. If I got that from the freezer section, I'd be very happy. It was quite salty and the biscuit on top had gotten a little burnt around the edges, but I had no problem finishing the whole thing. My boyfriend's fried chicken with mashed potatoes and white gravy tasted very beige, but I've found that, in general, chicken fried chicken is stick-to-your-ribs and dynamic with peppery, creamy gravy and crispity crunchity chicken about 30% of the time and wall paper paste with meat the rest of the time. I don't know if I can blame Currents for being on the wrong side of that. In a pinch, I'd pop back in, but I'd rather try something else in town.

Yelp
I had the Fish & Chips; my wife had the French Onion soup. While the fries were excellent, the cod was tough and the breading was hard. I believe that it was overcooked. The soup was way too salty. The service was great!
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
I had dinner here both nights I was in Salida because it was so dang good the first night! The bread the french dip was on was just so yummy and the fries were perfect. The next night I had the beef stroganoff and again; so yummy! Also, cheers to the staff because everyone was SO friendly!!

Yelp
Service was great. Food portions and prices are really good. The friend chicken is my favorite. They have chicken tenders on the kids menu for those picky adults as well.

Alex H.

Yelp
Ate here last night with four friends. My dish arrived 15min after the rest of my party's because they gave my entree to the wrong table. They then charged me full price ($43). What a joke.

Yelp
This place was highly rated, but that was not our experience with food or service. We had a wedge salad, the special Mahi Mahi, and an 8oz filet. The wedge was served with balsamic, looked puny, and was ok, but the value just wasn't there. The Mahi Mahi was so spicy we could barely eat it after everything was scraped off. Green beans on both dishes were bland and poorly seasoned. White gravy, which we've had all over the country at everywhere from 5 star restaurants to diners was terrible. The only taste was flour and milk. Seriously gross. Unsure how that can be done to such a simple comfort food. The steak was cooked to perfection, but the "steak sauce" tasted like BBQ sauce. They don't carry A1? Everyone from chilies to Ruth Chris to Elways carries A1. A steak house that doesn't carry A1-suspect. A seafood restaurant that has a single option for a fish filet???? Servers had 3-4 tables each, but struggled to do anything timely. They appeared stressed, inexperienced, and unfriendly. There is better value elsewhere. It's not bad, but we've honestly had more rewarding service and cusine from a diner.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
WOW. I wanted comfort food and my friend brought me here. He hit the nail on the head- they literally have a comfort food section on the menu! Like green chili?! Well I love NM green chili better usually BUT this green chili is OUT OF THE PARK!!!! The server was super kind, attentive and respectful! Not to mention accommodating to some food changes. The French onion soup is the best I have had in a very long time! Maybe even better than that French bakery La Baguette in the springs! As soon as you walk in you just want to spin around and take everything in! There's so much cool stuff to look at! Great ambiance! The sun hits just right in the windows at lunch time, and they have an epic street patio for those warmer days too! Presentation is everything and this place does an outstanding job at staging both the food and the establishment. New favorite restaurant in town! I will be back quite often while I work my way through the entire menu!

Yelp
Good food and friendly staff. Was in salida visiting the kid and grands. Darrelle wanted to try it so in we went. I got the sirloin and Andrea got the stroganoff. Both were delicious. I score a 7.8754. Nice place to enjoy a steak if you're in town.
google avatar

Leslie W.

Yelp
Steak was great. Nice area- we sat outside on the little deck - it was very nice! Service was great too

Lynn B.

Yelp
Best salmon salad I've ever had The dressing was so good...and the fries?! Outstanding...ate half of my husbands order. Great food. Great experience.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in this sweet little town. Came in again tonight and had top notch service from Molly. Enjoyed red snapper, fish tacos and some great cocktails on the outdoor patio. Highly suggest.

Gordon V.

Yelp
This is a gem in Salida. I love the old bar and feel of this place. The food is very good and happy hour is great. We eat here every time we are up in Salida for skiing.
google avatar

Dave W.

Yelp
Chicken pot pie, why change the great thing you had. I would come in for the flakey crust on the Chicken pot pie but now it is just a biscuit on top of a bowl of chicken stew. Don't change a winning thing.

Cyndy P.

Yelp
I can't rate the food because the service was so horrid we left. The server was bartender, hostess and waitress. The place was empty when we entered. We had to wait for the server to finish her conversation with the cook before she acknowledged us, telling us we could sit anywhere except the one dirty table. Another couple came in and was served their drinks before us, then the server asked if she could clean a table for another couple that came in while she was mixing drinks for the 2nd table. Again, it had been an empty restaurant with only one dirty table. I was so underwhelmed by her service, we chose to find another place for lunch. After reading the reviews, I am glad we left.

Yelp
A very cozy restaurant located in downtown Salida. We loved everything we got-- poutine, burger of the day with French onion soup, and fried chicken. The service was great as well!

Yelp
2 out of 3 of the folks I met in Salida sent me to Currents, and I'm very grateful they did... great food, excellent vibe, and just good people I sat at the bar as I was traveling solo and in between two guys who couldn't have looked more different on the outside, the three of us ended up having a great conversation about the best music, they gave me some very insightful and cool tips for my time in this part of Colorado and on my journey down to Sant Fe... the best place , hands down * My baked potato was a little undercooked... Everything else was Killah

Adrienne G.

Yelp
Hey there, Came in earlier this week and had a delicious twist on traditional mussels. The vibe was fun even though they were super busy. The staff was personable, attentive, and so kind to us even through the whole dinner rush. Shout out to Cali for her warmth and welcoming and holding down that crazy bar. Looking forward to our next visit here.
google avatar

Yelp
The steak was nice, the loaded mash potatoes out of this world, but avoid the seafood. They are more than happy to serve dead mussels in burnt garlic, more than once. The white wine pasta, tasted only of white wine. They waitress was super kind and friendly and apologized. The manager offered a free drink, and luckily took the meal off the bill. Nice patio, cheap wine by the glass.

Allyn K.

Yelp
A fun place. The fish and chips were great and best of all they had Great Divide brewing CO's Caaymore. The absolute best beer ever made!

Joseph L.

Yelp
Had the fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. I'm from the south and know good food. This was very good. I am usually disappointed with food in CO, but not this time. Good friendly service. Would highly recommend.
google avatar

Ted L.

Yelp
Absolutely a 5 Star experience. The food is fresh and awesome . The staff is way above average. Our server, Rikki was very attentive and pleasant. We will definitely return.

Connor W.

Yelp
Good food, good service. Friendly staff. The music was a bit too loud, but it seems like that everywhere. I'm not complaining about that, but maybe they'll see the review and think about it. I will definitely go back when I'm in the area.
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Hubby and I went on a dinner date here while traveling to Salina. I had the ribeye special and he has the fried chicken. We both loved our meal. I recommend the Flowerita if you are up for a cocktail. The atmosphere was awesome and the wait staff was great! Easy 5 star here!
google avatar

Will M.

Yelp
Overpriced. Mediocre service. Food was nothing special. Ambiance was nice except the staff seemed annoyed that I came in with my Family of 6. Definitely not a family restaurant, doesn't really have the space anyways. I will never go there again.
google avatar

Scott K.

Yelp
Service was pretty slow. A bit hard to hear conversations. We ordered stroganoff and one to go. Waitress said she'd put the order in when she delivered our food. She did not. Also, the stroganoff gravy was way too concentrated and overpowering. The beef was tender but the overall dish was absolutely not worth $23 plus tax and tip
google avatar

Diana A.

Yelp
Cool atmosphere and friendly staff! They make you feel like they're your friends and each on of them helped each other out with refills and checking on customers! Now the food is flavorful we ordered some fries that came with sweet onion, pavolene cheese, and bacon sauce. Now warning if you can handle FLAVOR this is not your place! We also ordered the steak with grilled shrimp and a wine glaze. Paired with mash potatoes and green beans. The steak was cooked just as we wanted, the glaze was a bit to much after a while but it could be the appetizer filled us a bit. The shrimp was not the best I will say It just tasted to charred for me. I Can't wait to come back and try something else because I was not disappointed.
google avatar

Evette T.

Yelp
Quaint atmosphere. Popular spot. Personally I have not had great experiences with food here. Diamond is an excellent human, and works the bar-he is stellar.
google avatar

Johan W.

Yelp
Nice ambiance, very low key, relax ambiance. Like the friendly local service, making you feel welcome not overwhelmed. Streak was below average. Below restaurant grade, hard to cut, and unchewable - to the point you just have it in your mouth for 15 min until you have to spit it... Applebee's steak is better. Go here for drinks, tacos, a good time, friendly service just don't order the steak!
google avatar

Yelp
This is an amazing restaurant. My mother uses a walker and they were so friendly an accommodating! The food and service were FABULOUS!

Yelp
This place was great! Came here w a large group and they were awesome! Good drinks, great appetizers and awesome entrees!! Totally recommend!!

Yelp
Let me preface this review with a disclaimer: I'm not a picky eater, nor am I the type to send food back. This restaurant is one of the few that causes me to crawl out of my shell and complain. We walked in as a party of 4, and the hostess seemed confused when we walked in. We sat out on the patio and were given waters. Our server came over to take our drink orders. It was clear that we were first-timers and needed some time to browse the menu, but he stuck around until we were ready. Drinks were put in. While waiting, we watched our server walk back and forth to the side alley to hang out with people smoking (who didn't work there). Given the timeframe, it was clear that there was a lack of washing hands / checking up on tables. We noticed another waitress placed the water pitcher on the fence under a tree for about ten minutes. The lemonade is Minute Maid, FYI. Jim Beam and Coke was good, and came out fast. Our food arrives, I ordered a 1/2 portion of the honey smoked salmon salad. I was given a full portion for no extra cost, a mistake of the kitchen that I was happy about! What made me upset? The fishiness and cat food-likeness of the salmon, which was cold and clearly canned. I sent it back, and our server responded in a kindly manner and brought me French fries to make up for it. Everyone else's food was mediocre at best-- the grilled chicken sandwich and BLT were alright, but the wedge salad was 1/4 of a small-sized head of lettuce. The mashed potatoes were said to be amazing, but were bland and unappetizing. The fries are good, so I asked for a to-go box. We waited forever for our ticket, and box, as was another table across the patio. Nothing was cleared off of our table. Empty drinks, plates, everything remained with no room to spare. We watched our server greet his friends in the alley, back and forth. A few times he walks over to our table and before approaching us, he sees someone he knows and turns around to talk to them. Finally, he comes with a Chinese take-out box. I thought that was a little peculiar. He checks us out with a handheld device, and we weren't given a receipt, but the total was off. The salad wasn't taken off the bill. I try to give the benefit of the doubt, but our experience was very odd and we wished we would've gone elsewhere. Our server was friendly, but everything going on was very weird and uncomfortable.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
The service is always great, and we've enjoyed the patio. The food offerings are pretty standard American fare, but the quality has been a little hit-or-miss the few times we've been.
google avatar

Lou P.

Yelp
We recently enjoyed a great dinner here. We were seating right away, and our server was on top of everything. We both wound up having Waygu Meatloaf. If it's a special when you visit....do it. Serving size was generous, and the meal was delicious. It was nice eating something besides Mexican or pizza...this may be our new favorite place to eat in Salida.
google avatar

Alan T.

Yelp
We came for dinner after a long day of skiing and this place HIT the spot. To begin with was the lobster queso. Of course it was delicious! For dinner I had fried chicken and mashed potatoes while my wife chose the seafood special that night. My wife loved hers and I absolutely loved mine. I'm a Texas boy and grew up on fried chicken and mashed potatoes and I have to say this might me the best I've had, even better than my mother's. They have a good beer selection too and I was excited to try the Blind Pig from Russian River Brewery. We all shared the berry shortcake which was super tasty and was a great ending for a wonderful meal! Our waitress had a great attitude and was terrific at her job and I got to speak to the chef who was a really cool guy who is great at his job! I highly recommend this place and look forward to returning one day!
google avatar

D S.

Yelp
Worst greasy food. Calamari must have been deep fried 3 x and fish and chips dripped grease. we were sick for 2 days after. Way tooooo loud and atmosphere is for obnoxious drunk people - who don't mind quality of food!
google avatar

Luke D.

Yelp
Excellent food. We had the linguine pescatore and beef stroganoff. Lobster Queso is delicious. Overall excellent experience. Atmosphere is a little loud, which is why the 4 star review. Service was decent, it took a while for someone to recognize that we were seated, but service was decent once we were recognized.
google avatar

Willow B.

Yelp
We were just served very undercooked burgers. The waitress took two half eaten burgers back to the kitchen to be cooked. And then pretended to offer us half price on the burgers. Because you know. They recooked the half burgers. Meanwhile My 30$ steak left me with food poisoning. It was chewy and hard to cut. I ate a few bites and felt it was off. Haven't slept and have been up and down all night.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
We were underwhelmed with our food here. The crust for the chicken pot pie was underdone and still raw underneath and the inside of it lacked any flavor. The fish tacos didn't have much flavor either (even with their volcano sauce). The salmon salad was delicious though. Waitstaff were exceptionally sweet!
google avatar

Barbara H.

Yelp
Had a great lunch on the patio. Service was attentive and good. Food was good-salad plentiful. All waitstaff seemed really nice. Clean inside.z
google avatar

Melissa S.

Yelp
Exceptional food . We chose this option based on reviews and menu. Started with the best wedge salad I've ever had, loaded with perfectly cooked bacon and blue cheese. We also had the cheese bacon soup with grilled toast , so good . He had the French dip with mushrooms and cheese. Down to the bun and au jus everything was delicious . I had the fried chicken and it was delish. I'm in pain from eating so much but I'm glad we decided to try this place . Only downfall was tea was watered down but who cares
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
Had two separate recommendations, one from a Colorado-native, and another from a buddy who had found it seeking a steak in the area. Great spot, best summed up as follows: we both had the chicken-pot pie, and I enjoyed mine so much I ordered another. When one of the server staff brought our check, she noticed that we had eaten "three pot pies?!", and hit us with an impressed . LOL. Go.
google avatar

Carolyn B.

Yelp
Mixed experience here. I've had some really good meals and some terrible ones. Lately the trend is downward. This place is off my list for a while. The burgers seem to be the most reliable (as long as you eat in the restaurant vs. To Go when they are likely to be cold along with the pile of cold, tasteless fries). Recently, the salmon special was terrible and very expensive. The fish tasted old and bland; the sauce was an attempt to make the meal tasty but failed. A few spears of asparagus. The best part was the mashed potatoes. Not exactly a healthy, satisfying meal. And the cost was ridiculous. Few vegetarian options, and the staff is not encouraging about possible modifications. Eating outside was a good option in summer, but the indoor situation was not very comfortable -- tightly packed tables and staff leaning in very close to guests. The atmosphere for a beer and a casual meal might work, but order carefully and check the prices.

T B.

Yelp
A great local staple, awesome friendly service great food daily specials. Love this place.
