12 Best Indian Restaurants in Charlotte | Eater Carolinas

"This longtime, casual chain is a solid bang for your buck. Generous portions of the popular korma, chicken 65, chana masala, and bhindi masala, along with veg momo and samosa chaat will satisfy any hankering. You can also customize your desired spice level on a heat scale from one to ten. Four Charlotte locations range in elegance, for example, from the South Boulevard outpost that took over the Pizza Hut with bars on the windows, to the refined counter service option in Uptown’s Monarch Market food hall, to a new location in Matthews." - Shindy Chen

Google
I absolutely loved it! I got takeout, but they do have a dine in option. I got chicken 65 (heat level 6), chicken tikka masala (heat level 5), and chicken vindalo (heat level 6). The vindalo and tikka each came with a half portion of rice. We got two orders of Garlic Naan. The picture shows a half portion of the Naan. Each of the plates were very flavorful. The heat was a perfect little kick. I will be getting 7 or 8 next time.

Google
I got veggie momos. The momos where good and crispy but the sauce was not so good. I had chicken momos before the sauce was delicious and they where really good but now they tasted bitter and not so good. Hope to get good one next time.

Google
Super Delicious Chicken Tikka Masala! This is my third time ordering from Curry Gate, and they never disappoint! I got the Chicken Tikka Masala for pickup the sauce was rich, creamy, and perfectly spiced, with tender chicken and fluffy white rice. The portion was generous, and the staff were friendly and quick. Definitely one of the best Indian meals I’ve had, highly recommend!

Google
I always get the tandoori chicken and it never disappoint (except once) the rice could be better. I haven't tried anything else but probably will since my go too closed during COVID. They could definitely make the inside more inviting to sit and eat in.

Romil D.

Google
Ordered online Manchurian Dry and Samosa Chaat. Manchurian balls were uncooked from inside, felt like eating ball of dough. Samosa chat was missing chutneys or it had barely had any, i am eating samosa chaat with Manchurian sauce. Asked for refund from uber eats for Manchurian dry, lets see if they will give.

To the Management Team, I am writing to you as a loyal customer who deeply appreciates your food and service. I am reaching out with a simple suggestion that I believe would be a positive change for your restaurant, your customers, and the environment: reducing unnecessary plastic in your to-go orders. In many instances, to-go orders include a significant amount of plastic—from utensils to bags—that customers often do not need and immediately discard. This creates unnecessary waste. I propose offering customers a choice during the ordering process: Utensil Option: Provide an option for customers to select "Plastic Utensils" or "No Utensils Needed." The default should perhaps be "No Utensils Needed," as many people eat their take-out at home where they have their own silverware. Bag Choice: Offer a choice between "Paper To-Go Bag" or the current plastic bag. Paper bags are generally more easily recyclable and are often preferred by environmentally conscious consumers. Implementing these choices would not only show your commitment to sustainability but could also lead to a reduction in your supply costs over time by using fewer disposable items. It's a small change that makes a big difference in reducing the overall plastic footprint. Thank you for considering this proposal. I look forward to continuing to support your restaurant.

Google
Tasty and deliciously spiced Nepal Indian food. The portions are very generous. They have a spice level 1-10 so you can get exactly the spice (or no spice) you want. Level 4 is a perfect medium in my opinion. Samosa chaat portion was so generous I couldn’t finish it and it’s just a starter. Chickpeas in every bite, yum! Chicken 65 Biryani is such a good value, they put Chicken 65 and regular chicken from the biryani rice. I’ve never seen this before in any Indian restaurant. Usually you’re lucky to get 3-4 pieces of chicken. This is like a starter and a main combined. Great deal. Mango lassi is creamy, fresh and not at all acidic. Nepal chicken momos also tasty but the chicken filling could use more salt/coriander powder in my opinion. Dipping sauce is very tasty and somewhat makes up for this. Service is very attentive and friendly. If you’re looking for a relaxed Indian restaurant with value, this is definitely the place.

Google
They have started fast dine-in now. They have plenty of tables and a nice atmosphere inside. I'd recommend goat biryani to anyone willing to try. The service is always welcoming and this has been a go-to spot for me for a few months now since I've been loving it.

Yelp
Wow. Some of the best Indian Nepali food I've ever tried. Super recommend the butter goat curry. The goat is so tender and clean. I also got the papdi chaat - sort of like Indian nachos - and that was great also. The restaurant is not in the most well-lit or vibrant area but the food is definitely worth taking the trip to.

Yelp
This spot is a solid option for Indian take-out in charlotte. Everything is always hot, fresh, and ready quickly. The location is very unassuming, but it's definitely worth a try. The butter chicken or chicken tikka masala are classics, but I also love the samosas and chili chicken. You can select your Own spice level on any of the dishes as well.
google avatar

Arsenio Q.

Yelp
Massive portions. Great food. If you have an aversion to chicken thighs dont eat here. Alot of people are textured eaters it is what it is. But i digress. This place is great for dining in or to gos. That parking lot is a bit small. But worth the food. If you have an itch for this cuisine itll definitely be scratched.
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Both food and service are great. The background music was very fitting. In comparison to other places with similar food, this place ranks pretty high. Highly recommend the Samosa Chaat and the Nepali Tea. Veg Biryani and chicken tikka masala were also full of flavor
google avatar

Yelp
1st time picking up from this location. Ordered over the phone. Prices lower that way. Food was tasty. Spice level 4 was perfect
google avatar

Ian N.

Yelp
Takeout only! Chicken Tikka Masala (4/5): Creamy and full of flavor. There was one ingredient I really didn't like (maybe coriander seed?), and I wish it was easier to pick those out. I also should've ordered a higher spice level. 3/10 was hardly noticeable. Butter Chicken (4/5): Similar to the Tikka Masala, but more mellow. Samosas (3/5): Huge samosas, but they were a bit bland and needed a lot more spices. I didn't like either of the sauces, but that might've helped. Garlic Naan (2/5): Very disappointing. The naan was too thin and was crispy instead of soft and chewy. It also didn't have enough garlic flavor. RATING SYSTEM 5 - Great (Need to get this again) 4 - Good (Would get this again) 3 - Ok (Might give this another shot) 2 - Not Good (Won't get this again) 1 - Bad (Telling people to avoid this)

Yelp
The food is always amazingly good at Curry Gate. First time trying their butter chicken, delicious. The chili garlic naan was also good, but spicy! The orange little chili peppers pack a punch! I picked up from their 24th location and service was as on time. I prefer swinging over there instead of waiting on delivery. Next time I am getting momos again cause I missed them...
google avatar

Yelp
Everything is always so delicious from Curry Gate. I will state that I have only visited this location due to proximity but it always hit the spot. I'm making my way through the menu and tonight was CG Special Biryani (level 3 was a little spicy just an fyi) and a cup of Mulligatawny. The CG special had so many flavors that worked great. I love the sauce that is served on the side. The soup was really good. It wasn't as heavy as a cream based soup but was still filling.

Alex C.

Yelp
Lamb was dry but curry was good. I do not recommend the naan I'm surprised their naan wasn't very good. Overall I would give 3/5 stars
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
The best Indian food in Charlotte. Flavors are fantastic, always consistent. I order this often and am never disappointed.
google avatar

Yelp
Curry Gate deserves all the hype. On a recommendation from a friend, I ordered dinner for delivery to my hotel through DoorDash. Their menu is expansive, and it took me some time to make a decision! In the end, I went with the Butter/Makhani and the garlic naan. I have to shout out the Curry Gate team for going above and beyond to package their takeout orders. The bags that they use are heat-reflective, ensuring that your meal will stay warm for a while! In an unfortunate delivery incident, my food was delivered to the wrong hotel. I was able to track it down, and was worried that my meal would be cold by the time I returned. However, because of their attention to detail while packaging, everything was still hot and fresh. The food itself was amazing - the Makhani was creamy and spice-forward, and it comes with a generous portion of rice. They don't skimp on the garlic for the naan either - every bite was full of flavor. I would definitely order from Curry Gate again, and recommend it to anyone looking for a hearty and comforting meal.

Yelp
My first time at Curey Gate did not disappoint! We got there and there was a "dine in closed. To go only" sign on the door, so we walked inside and ordered to-go! Only waited around 15 minutes. The BEST to go bags I have ever seen in my life. They are re-usable, durable, and insulated. I will be keeping the bag to re-use! Mango lassi was yummy! Delicious food! Will be ordering again!

Yelp
If you work uptown or in the surrounding area, and you love Indian food/curry dishes, Order from here: Curry Gate. I am a huge fan of their sister store: King of Spicy and it all started here, at Curry Gate. We have tried the Chicken Tiki, Kadi, and Korma and their Chilli. Best Indian food chain in Charlotte. Don't let the building fool you, it might look dingy on the outside, but the food inside is the best. If you do order and sit down the wait time is not long, but your food will be fresh. 100% recommend.
google avatar

N K.

Yelp
Food hot, service swift, ambiance.. well its a food court so, it was lively. Dal and Palak paneer fresh and flavorful; Naans were a huge disappointment though. Frozen naans at the grocery store have a better texture; rice that comes with entrees was a saving grace
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
This is hands down my fav Indian food in town. I've tried several dishes and none have disappointed me. If you're sick, try their soups, hot and spicy and make everything better. Our go to order is kadai lamb, garlic naan, samosa, and the tikka masala. Their spice levels are legit so go above a 4 if you dare. We stick to 5-6 and the next day it is HOT.
google avatar

Chad R.

Yelp
Indian food is my absolutely favorite, from good samosa, to flavorful, bold curry flavors. The shrimp tikka masala was killer!!!! The rice was classic Indian style rice. Service was fair, nothing special and the ambiance was pretty solid! I wouldn't go back for that but the food did its job! Will be back. 7.3/10
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
I overestimated the ambiance the place would offer, being a spartan location surrounded by fenced in businesses, with a parking lot that a lot of drivers cut through. They have space to dine in, but everything is served in takeout containers. So to have the stature this place does, the food must be amazing, was my optimistic take. I was right. Ordering dal at a spice level 8/10 delivered a freshly cooked dish with diced vegetables mixed in. The serrano heat was ferocious; their spice levels are for real and I would think carefully before ordering. The people seem to be Nepali, and I ordered the classic dumplings from the region and was treated to a diced cabbage and veggie mix with a tasty mustard sauce. I was full for a long time, but if I had any more room, the plethora of vegetarian options was awfully tempting. They have a second location on the south side of town that I would definitely consider visiting.

Latonya P.

Yelp
I'm sure happy I found out about this place. You can tell by the constant stream of people in and out that they have quite the loyal following! Sadie took our order and served us and she was a sweet as they come! We had tons of questions being first timers and her suggestions were excellent! We tried the chicken tiki masala and the chicken biriyani - both were good - I favored the masala the hubby the biriyani as it was spicy. The dumplings are quite tasty too. This is pretty much a hole in the wall spot with only a few tables for dine in and they serve everything in to go containers so no ambiance but don't let that fool ya - it's still good stuff! They just opt to keep it simple! Plenty of parking as well. They're health score was 97 or something close to that which was reassuring This is not near us but still worth a trip every so often.
google avatar

Kathryn E.

Yelp
Much busier than anticipated but the staff exercised quick yet polite service. During my visit the dining area was closed, but guests were still allowed to sit in the booths while waiting for takeout. I ordered the chana masala and it was truly one of the best I've had!
google avatar

Ally F.

Yelp
The Aesthetic: Hole in the wall, counter service Indian restaurant with amazing curries and dishes. The Price: I think it's pricey for one dish, but you can easily get two meals out of one so it's a better value. The quality is good for the price point. The Parking: They have a dedicated lot, so there's always plenty of spaces. My Order: I'm low key obsessed with the Palak Chicken and the Kashmiri Naan, it's a life changing combo. I'd eat anything on that naan honestly. The Rasmalai was good, but it could use a little more spice or pistachios. I haven't tried enough here, I need to keep trying dishes to find my favorites, it's just so good. The Conclusion: It's one of the better Indian restaurants in city, and you just have to try it!

Yelp
Was in Charlotte for the day and saw the insane amount of 5 star reviews so I had to give Curry Gate a try. It absolutely lived up to the hype! Curry Gate is a little hole in the wall with counter service and very limited seating, I counted 5 booths. All of your food is packaged in to-go containers, if you choose to eat in the restaurant they will give you some paper plates and a plastic fork. The food coming in to-go containers is very convenient because the portions are huge! I had the Butter Chicken and garlic naan and it was phenomenal! For spiciness level on a scale of 1-10 I asked for a 7 and it had a nice heat to it and wasn't unbearably hot, but I am use to eating spicy food. The cashier was very nice and checked with us to make sure the heat level was good after we got our food. The flavor of the sauce had a much more complex flavor than any other Indian restaurant I have tried. The garlic naan was crisp and was a perfect pairing. Definitely give them a shot if you like Indian food!

Santosh L.

Yelp
We ordered paneer sabji with garlic naan. Sabji was OK. But garlic naan was not good. Also no space to dine in. Additionally
google avatar

Nate K.

Yelp
Loved it, the Paneer Tikka Masala I ordered had a great spicy kick and tasted fresh. The vegetarian soup I got was also top notch. It is a cafeteria style very bare bones place as far as plates/utensils, interior design, and service goes but that doesn't bother me. Your food will be served on a tray with disposible plates, plastic utensils, etc. As I've said in the past I'm all about flavor with Indian restaurants. I've asked Indians about this in the past, they say service and tips are not a part of their culture. I just enjoy the food and smiling over amazing flavors.
google avatar

Irasema L.

Yelp
It's a small restaurant with lots of flavors. Hospitality and service are as good as the food. They also offer various levels of spice while keeping true to the flavors.
google avatar

Karen L.

Yelp
Always great, never fails. We order at least once a week, it's that good. Usually there is a line to pick up orders. Curry goat and Chicken Tiki Masala are the best!
google avatar

Aimee T.

Yelp
I know very little about Indian food, but I am well versed in food that is hot and delicious. Curry Gate delivered on both fronts. It was my birthday so I got to decide what we would eat for dinner. For whatever reason, I've been dying to try Indian food in Charlotte. This was my golden opportunity, as my family typically sticks to American, Italian and Mexican foods for the most part. I was nervous and figured all four of them would choke it down for my sake, but that wasn't what happened. The food was amazing. My hubby tried the lamb Makhani (level 3) and I ordered the lamb Vindalu (level 4). After we tasted the others', we realized we liked each others better. So we swapped and we were both happy. My kids had chicken curry (level 3) and shrimp curry (level 1&4). Everything had immense flavor and it tasted like it all had simmered for hours and hours. Most people know Indian food is very spice forward and Curry Gate's was no exception. A few of the entrees came with rice and it was steamed perfectly. We also ordered chicken Momo and veggie Momo and they were both great. It came with a sauce that was, interesting, but in a good way. I kept eating it to figure out the flavor, but it was too unique to pinpoint. We also got garlic naan and that was the perfect balance to the sauciness of the entrees. The entire time we were there people were coming in and out non-stop picking up to go orders. It was constant. And this was at 3pm. So that should tell you there really is something special about this place. The building is small, you literally might drive by it not realizing that it's a restaurant, so you have to keep a look out for it. The staff were very nice and when I told them we were newbies to Indian food she was very helpful with informing our choices. The next time I want Indian food, I'll be coming back here!
google avatar

Courtney L.

Yelp
Love picking up food here. It's highly addicting. If you like spicy, try the Butter Chicken (Makhani) level 7, you won't regret it. Oh and the garlic naan enhances the experience.
google avatar

Catherine C.

Yelp
Food is fantastic. Well balanced spice and flavor. Make note: there is no indoors seating - all carry out.
google avatar

Nina S.

Yelp
My go to Indian restaurant! Food is very delicious, pricing is very fair with the portions, and staff are always friendly! We love getting them to go, but have had a great experience dining in every time we've gone. Nothing has come close to beating them for me so far! Definitely worth a try!!
google avatar

Dayana V.

Yelp
Run, do not walk to curry gate!!! This place is lit! I've visited many times and each menu item I've tried has been amazing.
google avatar

Martha J.

Yelp
The food was absolutely amazing. Zero complaints. We had the butter chicken, tikka masala, chicken tikka, garlic naan, and a mango lassi. The only complaint I have is the beverages are served in plastic bottles. You get a bottled water without asking for it. So you can guess how many take 1 drink and the bottle goes in the trash. Thats a lot of plastic trash. This is my only reason for 4 stars.
google avatar

Vidhi N.

Yelp
So far the best Indian option I've found in clt! The servers are all very kind and it's also a good take out spot. I recommend the manchurian gravy
google avatar

Natalie P.

Yelp
Yum!!! Everyone knows (or should know) that hole-in-the-wall places like this usually deliver a 5star authentic experience. I'm thankful that my friends told me about this place otherwise I would have never known about it. It is very unassuming. Despite the exterior, this place was crowded with pick up orders and diners on a Saturday evening. My take out order took about 15 minutes to prepare and consisted of: chicken tikka masala, 2 orders of naan, and samosas. The total was just over $30 (not the cheapest.. but definitely worth it IMO). The food was fantastic! No complaints here. I ordered the tikka masala as a 1/10 spicy which had just the right amount of spice for me. This dish was packed with large chunks of tandoori chicken. The naan was perfect for dipping into the extra sauce. My favorite Indian spot in Charlotte. The portion was a decent size as well. My husband enjoyed his samosas. They were extra large and were filled with yummy potatoes and spices. We will certainly come back to curry gate and recommend to anyone that wants the best curry in town!
google avatar

Beth S.

Yelp
Wonderful food and service, our first visit here! Mamatha was our server and she was outstanding! I had the Tikka Masala and loved it, can't wait to eat the leftovers!
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
Really good curry for the price. Pretty authentic and I'm a bit of an Indian food critic. Fresh ingredients and definitely house made curry sauces Def worth the money. Enjoy!
google avatar

Mike G.

Yelp
Truly the best Indian food in Charlotte. The flavors, 0-10 spice level, and portions are all a huge reason. The service is wonderful because you order online and it'll give you an estimated pickup time and they occasionally throw in a free dessert for you. There isn't much seating at the North Charlotte location so I've only had it to-go. They just opened a new location south of the city on South Blvd that does have ample seating. I've tried many items in many times getting this to go but don't have prior pictures. Every time, every meal is amazing!
google avatar

Dave D.

Yelp
Food is great. Hole in the wall is a good description. Wasn't sure if it was open. Wasn't sure if i wanted to go in. Worst of all sanitation grade was 90.

Dennis

Yelp
Great food and staff is phenomenal. Lamb was a little chewy but worth every bite for flavor
google avatar

Lindsey D.

Yelp
Don't judge a book by its cover! This place is my go to for Indian in Charlotte. I especially love the chicken korma and tikki masala. I also enjoy their naan, it's always so fresh, even for takeout. They totally deserve their top restaurant ranking, great service and even better food!
google avatar

Emizz Z.

Yelp
Really good mom & pop shop with amazing service 1.Top right - Bhindi Masala - generous portion 2. Top left - Paneer Korma level 3 - minor kick, creamy and delicious 3. Bottom - lamb Curry level 2 - minor kick. While low quantity on lamb, the Curry is delicious 4. Kashmiri Naan - first time having a filled naan with cashew and dried coconut. Very fragrant, could eat this by itself
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
This is one of our go to spots for dinner. Incredible food, fair pricing, good service. Garlic naan and a mango lassi are a must!
google avatar

Brittney W.

Yelp
Went to the Monarch food hall location. The service was quick and friendly. The mango lasse was delicious. I think the marsala was not very flavorful.

Sam L.

Yelp
I was curious how a place like Curry Gate gets 5 star reviews. Then I noticed all the 5 star reviews are from people who consider Indian food "exotic" and think there is only one kind of "curry powder." My experience at Curry Gate has always been disappointing and unexciting. The curries are gloppy messes, the chicken is overcooked, lamb dishes have mostly bones, and I even got partially frozen ras malai once. Folks, this is not true, fresh Indian food. Botiwalla at Optimist Hall is better. Some smaller restaurants that center to students in the university area serve more authentic biryanis and curries.
google avatar

Kim J.

Yelp
The food was amazing and authentic. The service was spot on and very welcoming. It was incredibly clean and the portions were very large. We will be back to enjoy another meal!

Gracie Lou F.

Yelp
The chicken tikka is good -- minus the huge chunks of pepper disguised as chicken. $20+ for tikka that is mainly peppers /: Not to mention the naan is dry and hard each time. I've eaten here more than twice and the quality of the food has been consistent, a lot of peppers and naan dry as h**. I come from a location where there were a lot of Indian restaurants and this is the first place to have that many peppers in it. TBH I don't think I've ever had peppers in my tikka masala & no I'm not referring to the spice, I love spicy food! I'm talking about green peppers! The service is meh-- not really accommodating & there is no where to sit in there. I don't think I'll be returning. The last time was it.
google avatar

Raquel S.

Yelp
Big portions but beware of the spice levels! They ask you 1-10 so I ordered a 5 and it burned my mouth! Next time I will ask for 2-3 haha We ordered mango lassis (delicious!), chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, garlic naan, and gulab jamun.
google avatar

Candace M.

Yelp
When arrived I was surprised of the size of the restaurant. Thought it would be bigger. From the outside, it looks like a grab and go, not dine-in restaurant. As you walk in, there are a few tables where you can dine-in. First time visiting the restaurant because I've heard and reviewed such great things about it. Customer service was great with helping us decided what to order. Was also our first time having Indian food. The guy suggested their Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Kashmiri, and one other item. I ordered the butter chicken, appetizer plate with white rice and garlic naan. Everything was super delicious and filling. I had ordered so much there was plenty of leftovers. With each entree they ask for your spicy level. I ordered a level 7 and my friend order a level 5. The 7 had a medium hint of spicy but definitely you felt the spicy! My nose was running just from the spicy and that I was so hungry haha! Overall, I would definitely order from here again and will have to check times were they are less business to dine-in. There food and service is really dine-in material
google avatar

Sam L.

Yelp
After seeing and hearing rave reviews for months, I hate to say I was a bit underwhelmed by Curry Gate. While I liked the Chicken Momo and Garlic Naan, the Butter Chicken at the lowest spice ("Level 1") was near-inedible spicy while also devoid of any other flavor. Also the dish was mostly sauce with hardly any chicken and unfortunately the small side of rice provided was hardly enough to get it all down. Ended up tossing out most of the dish. Overall I'm not gonna rush back here but maybe would give them another try, with a different order.
google avatar

Yelp
Could I give this place 10 stars??? I would on any day hands down. I bet this place is the best Indian restaurant in Charlotte, outranking Blue Taj which is at best a fusion/hybrid not entirely authentic Indian cuisine. Everything about Curry Gate is wonderful. As soon as you enter, you're greeted by irresistible delicious aroma of Indian spices. Above and behind the counter are colorful mouthwatering pictures of their dishes. It's their model to serve the food in to go styrofoam boxes since seating is limited. Service was absolutely friendly and hospitable ( offered us bottled water otherwise you'd have to pay for just because it was so hot outside). We ordered garlic naan, veggie korma, veggie momo, tikka masala chicken. I realize not a lot of Charlotteans have heard or been to Curry Gate. You should! I vouch for it. Even a family of 4 was willing to eat their food in their car as soon as the food came out of the kitchen! That's testimony enough.
