The 14 Best Restaurants in Pleasanton - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The menu at this family-run spot reads like a greatest hits list of Malaysian comfort food. The nasi lemak with lamb rendang falls apart with barely a poke, the laksa strikes just the right balance between bouncy rice noodles and face-melting heat, and you’ll want at least a couple orders of the flaky roti canai with chicken curry. The space is equally comforting, like the cozy dining room of a friend’s house, with its mismatched tables and linens. This place is the answer to one of those days when only a proper bowl of something spicy and soul-warming can fix you." - gabi moskowitz

This is great Penang food. I have been here a few times. As a 6 ft talk white guy, the lady at the register was a little amazed I liked the Penang Laksa. She triple verified that I like this type as it is sour and strong fish flavor. Last time I was here I called ahead a the chef was nice to make me a special order that I requested. Great guy and loves to smiles on people's faces with authentic Penang food. They also had a side dessert from local bakery, Pandan Chiffon Cake. Yummy

This is the most authentic Malaysian restaurant in San Francisco Bay Area. The cook is a friendly Malaysian and he is a master at creating the dishes. The food is halal, with no alcohol served. There is also no beef, which caters for non-vegetarian Hindus. I visit the restaurant every chance I get. My favorite dishes are nasi lemak and nasi kandar, with with various combinations. Also love the mee goreng and char-keuh-tiaw, as well as the teh (tea) and kopi (coffee) tarek (latte). Portions are good and prices are typical for the area. Highly recommend!

Tried this place in Pleasanton today. The food tastes good and closed to the actual south-east Asian cuisine. It is kind of semi-self service. You order from the kiosk or directly from the cashier. Overall, if you are in neighborhood and want to try some south-east Asian food, check this curry leaves bistro.

I thought the food was pretty good overall. I was a little bummed that they didn’t have any hot beverages, but aside from that, everything else was solid. This is probably the closest I’ve come to authentic Malay food in the US. The roti canai was a bit on the thicker side — more of a personal preference, since I tend to like mine thinner. The sambal that came with the nasi lemak leaned a bit sweet for my taste. That said, the spicy mee goreng was absolutely delicious — definitely the highlight for me.

My third time visiting this restaurant and it never disappoints! Loved how authentic each dish tastes. As a Malaysian, this is still the best Malaysian food I’ve tried here. Totally love their asam laksa and it’s a must order dish for me everytime I visit. I also love their variety in nasi kandar selection. The ambience was great and totally makes me feel like I’ve returned back to Malaysia when i walk in. Owner and workers are all very nice and friendly. Would always recommend!!

Picked up a liking for Singapore/Malaysian food during my travel to Asia & was looking for one in East Bay. Highly recommend this place, great tasting options for veggie.. Cozy & friendly atmosphere, great food!

Google
Friendly restaurant serving authentic Malaysian food: very flavorful and spicy food, the atmosphere is relaxed and practical. Service was excellent, fast and everything very clean. They are also optimized for takeout. I had Penang Asam Laksa and it was wonderful, exactly as I remembered it! We also had a Nasi Kandar with grilled chicken (so tasty!) and Nasi Lemak with lamb rendang, also excellent! Highly recommended for anyone looking for real, comfort Malaysian food with fresh and quality ingredients.

Google
One of the few authentic Malaysian restaurants you can find in the Bay Area. I recommend their Mamak Fried Chicken, Mee Goreng, and Assam Laksa (follow their FB page for heads up on weekend specials). You can also get good Teh Tarik here although sweetness is not adjustable. On special occasions, you could pre-order Ngoh Hiang or Hokkien Bak Zhang. The owner being a Penang native, never disappoints with these dishes.

Yelp
First time trying Malaysian food. I've had Indonesian and Singaporean before so kinda similar, but this was new for me. My partner's friend is from Malaysia and said this place is legit, so we decided to check it out. I got the Nasi Kendar, which was $15.99. It comes with flavored rice, lentil gravy, stir fried cabbage, and papadam (thin spiced cracker). For the protein, I picked the mutton bone-in curry, which was $3 more. Totally worth it. The mutton was super tender and full of flavor. Had a nice spicy kick to it too. Just a heads up, the menu at the restaurant has more stuff than what you see online. You order at the counter, they give you a number, and they bring the food out to your table. Place gets packed during lunch. Like, no joke, it fills up fast. If you don't come early, you might not get a seat. So be ready to grab your food to go if it's busy. Overall, solid spot. I'd definitely go back.

Yelp
Authentic Malaysian food but not a lot of meat with lot of sauce and rice to be full. This is not the place to go on a low carb diet - Nasi Lemak with Lamb Rendang 4/5 - Nasi Lemak Prawn Sambal 4/5 - Nasi Lemak Mamak Fried Chicken 4/5 - Penang Assam Laksa 3/5 - squid appetizer 4/5 Service:, You order and pay on a screen, and they bring the food. You get your own utensils and water. Ambiance is not very comfortable. Tables are so tight to each other. You come to eat and go. Not a great place to hang out. There are not a lot of choices for Malaysian food but not worth a trip to come here but will stop by if nearby for Malaysian food.

Yelp
as a malaysian american, i am always looking for malaysian food- and curry leaves as been a go-to spot for my family since they opened. our favorite is the char kway teo, which brings my mom memories of back home and what she grew up eating. as our family is from penang, this place has a special spot in our hearts since the chef is also from there!! staff are always very kind and responsive to our needs, and i lovee the hint from back home- from the batik on the tables, to the decorations in the restaurant!!

Yelp
I thought of coming here for my fav Nasi Lemak with Chicken curry after trying it in Singapore and this eatery didn't disappoint! Flavorful curries and Sambal. The food leaves a lasting impression and leaves one craving for more! Friendly and quick service. Ordering is now done via a self ordering kiosk. Ambience is casual and family style. Will be definitely coming here for Nasi Lemak again!

Yelp
Food is so flavorful and good value too, would come back to try other items Order at the register or tablet. Grab a number for dining in and food will be delivered to your table (need to specify number when ordering) The standout dish for me was the roti canai with chicken curry. The roti canai came out steaming hot and was so good dipped into the curry. I paid $10 for it and would eat it every week if I lived closer. The chicken sambal was pretty spicy but tasted good. Tender chicken and fresh ingredients. The chicken meat roll was so good with the red chili sauce. Malaysian tea and coffee were pretty good but skippable if you're not in the mood for a milk tea type drink.

Yelp
It was very crowded on a Saturday lunch time. This was my second time eating here. The chicken was very soft and flavorful. It looked small portion but I was quite full after. I have to deduct a star because one order from our party came much later than others and we were worried that it was forgotten. I wished our waiter acknowledged that it was going to come later but anyway food was delicious

Yelp
Found out about this Malaysian restaurant from an episode of CheckPlease! and put it on my to-try list. On a recent Thursday, my friend and I were out in the area and I suggested we stopped by for lunch. It's located in a strip mall and we arrived at 12:20pm on a Thursday and had no problems with parking. We studied the menu posted at the counter and we both wanted the fried chicken. A worker came and asked if we needed help and we asked about the Kandar fried chicken and Lemak fried chicken dishes and she explained the difference. Ordering is by a touchscreen and she helped us with the process. You get a number and select a table to sit. There were about six table inside and three outside. Self-service water station available. I had the Lemak fried chicken dish, which did not have the traditional Malay spices as the Kandar. It came with coconut flavored rice, half a hard-boiled egg, cucumber and a sauce, which was spicy. The chicken was a leg quarter and it had crispy skin and the meat was moist. Friend had the Kandar fried chicken. Her dish had a basmati rice, with a curry-like sauce with a large chip/puff. I had a taste of the items and the flavors were bolder with the spices. My friend was going to mention this restaurant to her Malaysian friend and have her try. It was my first time trying Malaysian food and would like to try other items on the menu next time. Friendly service.

Yelp
Food is really good! Very flavorful. Really hard to find an authentic malaysian food in bay area. I am really glad to find this spot. Will come back.

Yelp
Stopped by after a while, and noticed a few updates. There's a new ordering kiosk and they've added more tables inside and out, which is nice. Got the nasi kandar and roti telur, pretty solid! The curry was flavorful and hit the spot. Always a good choice for Malaysian comfort food.

Yelp
One word for this place - flavor! They know how to nail it down! Their Mee Goreng is the dish to go for! I got the regular one with meat and seafood, medium spicy and it def got me sweating a bit Good for work lunches and casual friend lunches. Their spring roll is also pretty good. Wish the roti canai was slightly more flaky and less thin. But I still this place a 5/5! For anyone looking for good flavorful food with the right amount of spice, give this a try and you will be back!

Yelp
I have been curious about Malaysian food and more specifically this place. It has gotten high praise. So I found time on this Friday lunch hour for a visit. A helpful and friendly young lady behind the counter provided an overview or primer for newbie. She walked me through the order kiosk to place my order of char kway teow and roti with curry chicken and soy milk. The roti came first. It's soft , kind of flaky and stretchy that reminds of Chinese green onion pancake. Dipped in the curry sauce was nice and the curry although pleasant has a spicy curry and bitter kick to it. Together with bits of chicken or potato can be meal onto itself. I really enjoyed the roti. Next came the main entree, Char Kway Teow that had plenty scrimp and squid pieces it reminds me of Chinese chow fun and Thai pad Thai because the noodle. It satisfied my curiosity so I can try other dishes on my next visit.

Yelp
What a busy place with interesting food. Lots of activity 1p+ on Saturday afternoon. Order via the electronic kiosk or in person. We were lucky to find a seat. Ok service was a bit chaotic but they eventually got our order correct and it was worth the wait. Friendly helpful staff. Roti Telur warm and inviting with lentil gravy. Delicious flavor and texture. Mee Goreng nicely spiced and just like in other pictures. Plenty of food to fill you up. Nasi Kandar the best choice of our meal as it has a variety of flavors and textures. A really interesting and pleasing plate. We requested tofu version they were out but offered eggplant instead. Nice surprise as the eggplant was flavorful and carried plenty of heat. Better than expected. When you need to warm up with spicy filling comfort food this is a great choice. Be surrounded by friendly atmosphere and attentive staff. Make it a cultural experience.

Yelp
I am so glad we have a Malaysian cuisine in the area! I've been here a few times already and I really enjoy their char kway teow and nasi lemak. The noodles are nicely flavored and you can taste the "wok hay" in the dish. It comes with shrimp, squid and some type of fish cake. Their sambal sauce is absolutely delicious too! It's spicy, but not too overpowering and it pairs perfectly with the chicken and rice. The restaurant is always busy so order ahead online. I've also tried their pandan sponge cake and that was the perfect way to end the meal. Super soft and not very sweet. Prices are very reasonable and they share a parking lot with Lucky's and other small businesses.

Yelp
A fantastic and authentic family-owned Malaysian restaurant in the Tri Valley! We saw this restaurant on KQED's Check Please Bay Area and had to check it out. So glad we did! We ordered the Penang CKT, Penang assam laksa (mild), nasi lemak fried chicken, roti canai (veggie & with chicken curry), mee goreng (mild) & 4 hot Malaysian teas. Delicious!! Everything was fresh, made to order and full of bold flavors! We even got to meet the owner, Jai and learned that Curry Leaves has been here for 3 years! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
My husband is a huge fan of Nasi Lamak. He had this dish numerous times in Malaysia and Singapore at the most authentic hawkers, restaurants and street food places. We have been waiting for a long time to try out this restaurant and finally the day came. We went in with heavy expectations and hungry tummies. Nasi Lamak: the rendang chicken curry was bland. Sambal tasted nothing like what they serve in Malaysia. It's different and has a sweet taste to it. Fried boiled egg gravy was good. The rice did not have coconut nor pandan leaves flavour that the OG dish has. Roasted peanuts and fresh cucumber was on the side. Roti tellur: unfortunately we didn't like this at all. The paratha with beaten egg roti heavily lacked salt. Roti was also rubbery, chewy and not fresh. It was served with dal which was also less in salt, bland and tasteless. The authentic dish is served usually with dalcha and fish curry gravy. After we came out of the restaurant, our stomach felt a bit off. Not sure why. Disappointed. We drove from far place to try this restaurant out. Wished our experience was better. Maybe other dishes were good. The place was small and tables were cramped. My pregnant belly couldn't fit through few tables. Food came out in good time.

M L.

Yelp
Truly disappointed. We were very excited to try this place since it was featured on Check Please Bay Area! We walked in, I hadn't decided what to order, no one, and I mean no one (out of the 4 employees that made eye contact with us) asked us if we needed help or even welcome us to the bistro. As much as I want to try the food, the lack of courtesy and customer service will keep us away. If I could rate the experience as a zero, i would

Yelp
Wait Time: 15 minute after placing order. Arrived around 6pm on a Sunday Unique Factor: 3/5 - One of few Malaysian eateries in the Bay Area, definitely a hidden gem. The ambiance and flavors felt authentic, I cannot say I've ordered and have had any of these dishes before, but they all felt familiar. We tried the Penang LoBak (Chicken meat roll), Nasi Kandar Mamak Fried Chicken, Mee goreng, Roti, and iced caffeinated beverages. The Penang LoBak was flavorful, crispy and a generously protein packed, the Nasi Kandar Mamak was a a great way to experience many of the flavors they had to offer, the Mee Goreng resembled Chinese Take-out chow mein, but with a little twist. Overall, portions were generous and flavors were unique to the cuisine. We will be back to try the menu! Service: Mostly Self-Service, entrees delivered to the table (McDonald's new table service might be modeled after this). Friendly staff.

Yelp
Went with my wife to savour authentic Malaysian food after hearing from a food blogger in Instagram. To be honest I must say I'm disappointed that it wasn't authentic Malaysian food. I have been visiting to Singapore since I was 10 years old. My dad lives in Singapore for more than 2 decades. I have had authentic Malaysian cuisine in Malaysia especially KL, Ipoh, and Johor Bahru. The food i tried today didn't come anywhere closer to those. I didn't mean to demean any business , but being an ardent food lover who travels across globe to eat good food. I had a stomach discomfort after eating my food. I came with my pregnant wife here and she was feeling the same. We ordered Nasi Lemak for which I would give 8/10. Coconut flavour was less in the rice. Rest all side dishes were pretty good. My wife and I enjoyed it. Now comes the culprit , Roti Telur - I would never order from this place again. It was so rubbery and not so fresh which gave me awkwardness after I finished my meal. It didn't go well on my tummy. The lentils given as side dish was so bland. In Singapore hawker centres - they serve roti canai with dalcha and fish curry. Menu can be elaborate like including Roti Murtabak and Cendol. Layout of tables were too cumbersome, could be spaced out. As we were dining inside and found it difficult to squeeze in between while having to disturbing other people. Place is clean and ambience is good but there is definitely lots of room to improve. I will definitely think twice before trying here again. I still wanted to try Nasi Kandar as I have seen many people ordering today along with Kway teow Goreng. Spacious parking for customers. Customer service was pretty ordinary. I'm disappointed overall

Yelp
so excited to find malaysian restaurant in east bay since we enjoyed our Penang trip and its local delicacies. Penang Char kway teo; my first order was spot on, aromatic and flavorful. was happy to find place we could order char kyaw teo. subsequents orders of penang char kway teo: still aromatic but a bit of bland flavor, perhaps they forgot to put seasoning or salt? Penang Assam laksa: we mistakenly ordered think it would be more of singaporean laksa. not fond of this dish. Nasi Lenak: just okay, they do sell some kueh-kueh on the weekends.

Yelp
Best Malaysian restaurant in California The char kway teow and mee goreng rlly has wok hay

Maryanne W.

Yelp
The best Char kway teow 炒粿條 in the Bay Area! The Nasi Lemak, Nasi Kandar and Mee Goreng are also wonderful. My husband is from Malaysia so when it comes to Nyonya food he can be very picky. We actually found this place and have eaten there for years but finally decided to do a review. The menu is limited but they really put in the effort to make everything delicious. The owner is from Panang and makes a mean plate of char kway teow, which I always order it extra spicy. They do not skimp on ingredients you will get your shrimps, fish cakes and my favorite squid!! You can really taste the wok fire in the noodles. I have not found another place offering better char kway teow in CA... Sometimes they will have special dishes for special occasions such as Malaysian or Singapore holidays, but I have not gotten a chance to try those. It is a family owned restaurant so the ambiance is casual and can be loud. When it first opened the kids were there to help, but the last time we went they had more helpers and kids were no longer there. I don't think they open daily as they also provide catering to some Singaporean associations or other organizations. Sometimes they will have Kuei available for purchase. I love Kuei but they can be pricey which is understandable as those little yummies can be labor intensive and time consuming to make. I do indulge myself from time to time when I see them. I would suggest come during slow time if you do not want to wait for your food or share table. The rice dishes can be fast but other dishes might take some time.

Yelp
This place has been on my list for some time, but I've never gone since it's quite a far drive from home. However, my craving for Malaysian food overcame my distaste for driving and I ended up here on a busy Saturday. You have to order at the counter and choose your own table. Thankfully, we arrived at the perfect time and were able to grab a table before the place filled up. Ordering was easy and food came out in a reasonable amount of time. We ordered: - Malaysian tea (5/5): Really good. Really thick. This teh tarik gets a gold star in my book. - Hainan chicken (3.5/5): Tender chicken and sauce was good, but the rice, although flavorful, was dry - Nasi lemak (4/5): It doesn't really taste like the nasi lemak I've had in Malaysia, but the sauce was good and complemented the chicken well. - Penang Char Koay Teow (4.5/5): I loved the noodles. I ordered it with medium spice (which is interesting because I've never had the option to change the spice level before) and it was very good! This was probably my favorite dish out of everything we ordered. - Roti canai (1/5): SKIP. This was a miss for me. The roti was too thick (and borderline rubbery)! We didn't even finish it. I do not recommend it. Overall, with the cost and the quality of the dishes, I think this restaurant is okay. My (Malaysian) mom was also not very impressed, unfortunately. I probably wouldn't come back because I personally don't think the food justifies the price or the distance.

Aaron K.

Yelp
Food and service were both great. Can't wait to try more of their food, especially the Roti Kanai

Ellie O.

Yelp
Wonderful family owned restaurant!! The amazing and delicious flavors are an adventure and delight. I tried 3 of the dishes and they were so DELICIOUS! Will come back for more even though out of town. You too will love it if you love Thai, Indian or have an international palate. Highly recommended!

Yelp
EDIT to reply to owner: I simply stated my opinion of the food and staff attitude to help people decide what to order for themselves and whether they want to come here. I saw after that that the laksa is different in your Yelp poster, but it wasn't clear in-store when I ordered. Not knowing the difference was on me, but it doesn't change the fact that the dish tasted bland and I didn't enjoy it. I could have gotten something unexpected and be blown away. Maybe I should have been more clear regarding the staff feedback - the customer-facing staff I interacted with didn't seem that happy to help us or to answer questions (vs friendly staff at other establishments). Instead of taking my review as feedback to improve, your response is defensive and not appreciated. Edited from 3 stars to 1 due to owner's response. -- I definitely should have done more research before visiting this place or came with a Malay friend. Unlike other raving reviews, my experience at Curry Leaves Bistro left more to be desired. Dishes we got: * asam laksa: DON'T ORDER THIS unless you've had it before. We skimmed through the menu thinking that this is the normal curry laksa. Oh boy were we in for a treat. The broth was spicy yet bland and fishy. We couldn't continue eating it after a couple bites, and decided to to-go it to re-season later since we didn't want to waste food. I wished the person who took our order gave us a warning. * roti with chicken curry: nice chew, though we wish it was crispier. Chicken curry was ok, too spicy for our liking. * char kway teow: saving grace of our meal. The sole reason this review is a 3, not lower. Noodles were flavorful and nicely charred. Something I'd order again. For the price, we were hoping for a slightly bigger portion. Note that bags and plastic containers are extra charge. They only give paper takeout boxes for free. Given this policy, I do not recommend ordering noodle soup here. Food came out within a reasonable amount of time after ordering. Besides the owner, everyone looked like they didn't want to be there. Tables were first come first serve. You need to claim your spot after ordering and put your dishes away afterwards. If you come in at busy times, you might have to share the big table with other people. I might come back to try other more popular dishes, but this past experience was mostly a miss for me and I could not recommend.

Yelp
I reaaaallllyyyy wanted to love this restaurant because it's my hometown food!! But I appreciate an honest review. Food was ok. The sambal was delicious (coming from someone who has a sister that makes a bomb a*% sambal) The nasi lemak rice needs to be soaked in a little more of the coconut milk (not lemaky enough) My annoyance comes from the very delayed arrival of my child's order. We watched as everyone in the restaurant, incl those who came after us who ordered the same thing had theirs came first. We politely asked them twice about it and no one came back with an answer. I totally understand if they were slammed but the fact was we saw other guests getting their food first and two or three tables who came after us had their same order came within 5 mins of them sitting down. Nah.

Yelp
first time here and thought it is a new place but turn out not. it is more like malaysian and singaporean restaurant. order from kiosk and you will get number after that and they will bring your foods to your table. for foods: 1. nasi lemak: expect to get the rice a bit drier or fluffier. i think it is a bit too much water when they cooked. the plate is a bit too big and can see just the rice and fried chicken from the picture. the fried chicken is ok but the chili is not spicy; in fact, tend to be a bit sweet 2. penang assam laksa: ok 3. sour plum and lime: refreshing and recommended overall, taste is just ok and price is a bit pricey. three stars from me...

Yelp
Wasn't sure walking into this place but holy crap am I glad we tried it. The owner is super friendly and helpful, all the staff actually. He recommended stuff to us and explained the menu and came around to check on us while we were eating. The food is so good and flavorful. The place is very basic which is great because they're not wasting time with the frills...it's all focused on the great food. We were starving and I did not take pictures but we had the Mee goreng with no calamari, the lamb, Fried chicken and veggie egg rolls. Did not disappoint in any way!

Yelp
Good spot for Malaysian food in Pleasanton! My friend and I dropped by for an early dinner Thursday around 5:30 pm and we were the first ones there. It was a nice day out, so we decided to sit outside to enjoy the breeze. The way it works is you order inside at the counter first, and then they'll bring the food out to you. We shared the roti canai with lentil curry ($6.49) and each got our own entree. I got the Penang char koay teow ($16) and my friend got the mee goreng with chicken only ($16). You can choose your desired spice level when ordering as well. Surprisingly the roti canai came out last; we got our two noodle dishes first. It's my second time eating the char koay teow here (I got it for takeout the first time) and it was just as good as I remember. The flavor was on point with plenty of wok hei, and they don't skimp on seafood (shrimp, calamari, and fish cakes). My friend enjoyed his mee goreng as well, but we were both disappointed by the roti canai. The roti was super oily, and the lentil dip barely had any flavor.

Yelp
TL;DR: quite a drive from SF/south bay but worth it for the delicious, authentic flavors from Southeast Asia at a reasonable price. I wouldn't usually be in this area but I had gone fruit picking with friends in Brentwood and figured it wouldn't be too far out of the way to come here. I'd heard good things about this spot for its authentic Malaysian food and was excited to try some items in a group. Service was efficient and friendly at the counter where you order and pick up your food, and the restaurant itself is in this strip mall and had a pretty bare bones interior. All the tables were covered in plastic which was very Southeast Asia of them :) Food: Roti canai with chicken curry: curry was very flavorful! This was one of the favorites at the table because who doesn't like crispy bread with curry? I thought it could have been even crisper and fluffier but I have high standards. Hokkien prawn Mee: this was BOMB. The soup was super flavorful and I loved the mixture of yellow egg noodles with rice noodles! It also came with a generous amount of prawns, fish cake, bean sprouts and water spinach. Another favorite at the table, everyone was trying to get their hands on every last drop of soup. Assam laksa: a pretty good rendition in the bay area where you can barely find this dish anywhere. I liked that the rice noodles were slippery like they should be, with nice fish chunks in the soup and herbs and pineapple on top to keep things fresh! The drizzle of fermented prawn paste kept things authentic but while I liked this, it wasn't very popular at the table. Nasi lemak with ayam goreng: coconut rice, fried chicken, spicy sambal, what's not to like? I would have preferred a fried egg on top but hard boiled eggs are good too. Loh bak: these are like meat rolls stuffed in tofu skin and fried - everyone loved this at the table and they were really crispy, flavorful and nostalgic for me. Usually this is served with fried tofu as well in Penang so it would be nice to get some of that too next time. Teh tarik: literally means pulled tea, this was milk tea but definitely not pulled (which makes it airier and has a nice smooth texture). I enjoyed the nostalgic flavor of condensed milk. Everything was very reasonably priced and I walked away very full, satisfied and happy. Now to think of another reason to go to Pleasanton so I can get other items next time...

Yelp
I am Malaysian and have tried quite a number of dishes here in the short few months since I discovered this place and all I can say is the food is authentic and delicious! Try the chicken satay, char koay teow, mee goreng, laksa for sure. Easy parking, comfortable & clean seating area, efficient service.

Yelp
They don't always open so it was quite hard to come enjoy food. The food at the restaurant seems genuinely local Malaysian, taste was great. You can choose either mild or spicy for your food. The interior is crowded but they have outdoor seating. There was a long line to order at the cashier, pay first and they bring your food. There was quite a bit of wait but understandable because of the long line.

Yelp
The look is pretty close but taste is off. Ordered penang char kuay teow, hai nan chicken rice, satay and nasi lemak but the taste of each dishes is off especially the hai nan chicken rice and satay. Came back 2nd time after similar experience. I had to say it didn't meet my expectation after seeing good reviews from some Malaysian.

Yelp
It was our first time. Cant say it was the best but it's good. We got the Nasi Lemak, Penang Fried Chicken and Mee Goreng The Lemak didn't have much flavor. A bit too bland But the Chicken Mamak penang was great. Mee Goreng had decent texture. Not sure if I would drive for it again. We were still hungry. So if it's a party of two, y'all have to get at least 4 items to be full. No wait though, we went on a weekend at lunch time

Yelp
The overall experience of this restaurant had a nice cozy feeling and the service was helpful / attentive. The interior had a bit of a disorganized seating arrangement, but it was a fine place for dining. The food was good! I had some great dishes, some were okay (the roti), and the flavors were all there. I think that the food was delicious, but I think the portion sizes could have been a bit bigger for their price, but I think that this is a quality Malaysian cuisine location that is authentic.

Yelp
Update after business owner replied. By cold, I mean the soup was not even heat up. Like straight out from the fridge cold. From picking up the take out to my destination was less than 15 minutes drive so it has nothing to do with the weather. And yes, I can take out orders a lot thank you. ------------------------------------ I phoned in my order. My last visit was a couple of years ago. I still remembered the long line and super yummy food. I ordered Penang Assam Laksa(it was SO spicy)$18 , mee goreng $16 and hainanesw chicken rice$13.99. The taste for the hainan chicken was just alright. It doesn't have much flavor to it and the rice is not the oil rice which I expect it to be with hainan chicken. The mee gorang was pretty blend. Just alright. Penang Assam Laksa soup was COLD? I am not sure what to expect but a flavorful hot soup base with rice noodles and some fish or meat? However, it only came with some lettuce, rice noodles and a tub of cold soup with some shredded fish. It was not what I expected. I think this place might have changed owner. Food does not taste like Malaysian at all. I don't think we will be back.

THE BEST. Period. Bringing authentic Malaysian food to the bay area scene ensuring a home away from home experience. Thank you Jai

Yelp
Curry Leaves Bistro, Pleasanton: 2024 Feb 11 (5 of 5) I celebrated Chinese New Year with my friends at Curry Leaves Bistro. We had a lovely time, eating and chatting. This is their first visit there, and they said they will be back to try other items on the menu. My friends liked everything they tried. I have several favourites - Penang Lo Bak, Kari Kapitan, Peanut Cookies, Char Koay Teow and the Friend Chicken. I am pleased to get some of the foods I grew up eating. I find this is, by far, the most authentic Penang-style eatery I've tried... and I've tried many.

Yelp
We were craving laksa and nasi lemak so were excited to find this around the corner from where we were shopping. You can order at the kiosk or at the counter which we ended up doing. The desserts are on the table to the right of the order counter and they have assortments of your classic Malay sweets. The laksa they had that day was not the "typical" one most places sell in the Bay (and yes, I know each region has its own version and I'm familiar with assam), and it was VERY sour. While I can see that others may prefer it, it was much too sour for my taste unfortunately and left a very unpleasant taste lingering in my mouth. The nasi lemak was good, a bit on the pricier side but I do understand operating in the Bay is expensive. It was pretty crowded and seems to be a neighborhood staple, and if I'm around I'd like to try their noodles but unfortunately the laksa was not what we were looking for that day.

Yelp
Been a fan of Jai from the assam laksa before he opened his restaurant! One of the best in the Bay area! First time going to his place and it reminded me of the hawker feeling :) Wattanho was a bit bland, lacking seasoning. For this dish, I prefer Mingala. Assam Laksa is the best in the Bay area! Mee goreng was also really good and chewy. Ice Bandung was too sweet. Dessert of the talam and blue sticky rice was great! Looking forward to trying his nasi lemak, fresh chakwetiau and other stuff next time.

Yelp
Might be the best malaysian restaurant in the bay area. Really enjoyed nasi kandar with onion chicken and char kuey teow. Spices are a bit milder than in malaysia but still very enjoyable. Appreciate that the food is not too salty! Mostly self service (order in front, find your own seats/utensils/drinks). No frills but clean seating. Very busy even before noon. They missed a couple of our orders so suggest proactively checking your orders.

Yelp
Had a hainanese chicken rice which was pretty good but wish the rice had more chicken flavor. It had more flavor of spices to me. Also had a Char Kuey Teow which was a bit oily for me but had lots of flavor so that was good. I enjoyed that it had pieces of squid and good sized shrimp. The milk tea had a lot of tea flavor and wasn't very sweet. Overall the dishes were smaller serving size than I am used to so that was disappointing. The service was pretty good, everyone was friendly.

Yelp
I saw this place on Instagram and I had it in my collection of places to try. The food was spicy and good. You do go up and order, seat yourself and they will serve you. There were a lot of people when we arrived so I knew it had to be a good place. I would come back again when I am within the ar

Yelp
I was so excited to eat at Curry Leaves after seeing high yelp reviews, but I hate to say that the experience was a let down. We came here with a group of 7 people around 11:15 and was luckily seated right away. The restaurant was getting busy. Even though it is a sit down type of place, it is pretty much self-serve. You order at the counter and get your own water kinda thing. A few things that are on their yelp photos (provided by the restaurants) were not available that day, such as Hokkein mee and seafood curry laksa. Curry puff: 6/10 pretty good, but the puff was hard and not flakey Roti canai: 8/10 for the chicken curry dipping sauce and 5/10 for the lentil dipping sauce Char Kuey Teow: 6/10 the rice noodles were overcooked (mushy) and the dish was bland Mee Goreng: 8/10 my favorite dish out of everything we ordered Asam Laksa: 5/10 It tasted strange, almost bitter Maybe my expectation was too high, maybe it was an off day, the experience was somewhat a let down.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing. Been here many times and the food is incredible. You have to line up to order food at the counter and then seat yourself. Food - 6/5. Now this is a place that absolutely showcases their delicious sambal! The spice in the sambal is mild and should be enjoyable for most. I get the nasi lemak with mamak chicken (fried chicken). The chicken is cooked to literal perfection! It is really crispy without excess batter. I highly recommend mixing the sambal altogether with the rice and anchovies/peanuts. The outcome is a fragrant coconut dish with a delicious unmatched flavor. The chefs here really knows their stuff. The nasi lemak with chicken rendang is also really tasty and adds a complementary curry flavor to the mix. Service - 3/5. If there's any knock on this place, it's that they are understaffed and do not have time to clean up the tables, and you may end up having to bus other people's trays (yikes!). I don't think it's clearly stated, but you're expected to clean up after yourself -- it's more efficient that way anyhow. Also lately, the lines have been getting so long that food might be ready before there is even an available seat! Imagine that. So you need to come in early when they open for a shot at getting some seats.

Yelp
Plus: Taste authentic, every order is made fresh and hot, the lady before me ordered the same item, but I can tell they cooked mine separately. Minus: Doesn't have good Malaysian chili sauce to go with the food.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to get a ticket for their special buffet event and what an experience! This is easily the best Malaysian food outside of Malaysia itself. It is worth driving over an hour for! Lucky to have found this hidden gem after 12 years in the Bay. You know this place is legit when they host Ministers from Malaysia!!! I love how this place brings the Malaysian community (and the community at large) together. I hope they continue to be successful and grow. I would love for them to have their buffet event more frequently and in a bigger location. You've found yourself a loyal customer. Will continue to support from here on out!!!
