This was the best meal I've had since the last time I dined at Curry Up Now, which was in San Francisco, nearly a decade ago.
Most of my previous Curry Up Now experiences have been at food truck events in the Bay Area. This was my first time ever stopping by the Sacramento location, and it will definitely not be my last.
It's actually kind of funny to me that none of the other reviews seem to mention that Curry Up Now is a very popular chain in the bay area-- I can't be the only one who was a fan for years before they came to Sacramento.
Anyway, I'd been wanting to check this location out ever since they opened, which was during the pandemic. It's been a long wait.
Today, finally, I had the chance to stop by and order the deconstructed chicken samosas, which came loaded with chana masala, mini chicken and veggie samosas, pico de gallo, and chutney.
Oh my goodness, it was so amazing. The menu calls the deconstructed samosas "an inside out phenomenon," which feels accurate.
It tasted like the person who prepared my food understood the importance of every single one of the dozens of spices that must have gone into it. It tasted like they knew their way around a chicken carcass, and could probably deconstruct one with their eyes shut.
It tasted like its own kind of genius. I thought, "Finally, a real meal." I didn't know that I hadn't had a real meal in years, but, as soon as I bit into this one, I knew it.
The woman who took my order and brought my food out to me was very friendly and warm, and definitely hooked it up when it came to samosa toppings.
The portion size is very generous, but, famished for flavor as I was, I finished every last bite.
To the reviewers who claimed that the food "lacks flavor:" I could literally taste the hand-crushed cardamom. The flavor was so full of depth and spicy nuance that I thought to myself, "This tastes like love."
To the reviewers who said it's "too spicy": Why would you mark down spicy food for being spicy? It's supposed to be spicy. That's like complaining that a steakhouse doesn't have enough vegan options.
Besides, do you have any idea how hard it is to find food that is ACTUALLY this spicy? Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a restaurant who will serve anything spicier than a red chili pepper flake?
Some of you have never taken a bite out of a raw Carolina Reaper pepper, and it shows.
Here are some of the texts I sent my mom while eating:
"It's so good that I could get food poisoning and I would still come back."
"This is the best meal I've had since the last time I've had Curry Up Now."
"I literally sat here and stuffed myself because it's too hot to carry it home, and I could not let food this good get thrown in the garbage."
So, yeah. I'll be back.
