Just a little confused. We came to the bar and ordered drinks and were told by the kind bartender that we can sit outside. We sat outside for about half an hour before a server approached us and said we had to move to a smaller table by the trash cans with no explanation. All the other tables around us were tables of two seated at four tops. Really bad service from the servers and everyone around us was served and we were not ignored and not served! Weird vibes

Not a bad place but more suitable for a sports bar. The portions of food are large, we ate one burger for two and took the second one to go, but the burger patties were overcooked and tasted bitter. Prices are acceptable.

For my pre birthday year I decided to start it off here since I heard good things about this place and boy was I surprised . The place was clean and spacious and fairly empty that evening when arrived . The mussels was delicious and I was told the chicken was good as well . The food arrived in a timely manner . However I would not suggest to get drinks from there . The two drinks we got was watered down with no taste of liquor . When asked can I get a new drink I was told it was suppose to taste that way ? It was not suppose to taste that way . That’s why I bought another drink which was a martini and that was fine . I’m not a drinker still I know the value of a good one .For 15 dollars a drink it should not taste like water so it’s unacceptable . That in turn changed the vibe of me being there so I won’t return . Part of the experience for dining out is the experience and the environment. So for yay for vibe nay

Google
Fantastic spot on a lively block. Big, deep room and long, welcoming bar. Nice seating, and quality food was being served all around us. Great drink selection with some good games on the tv. Friendly bartender. Good mix of folks inside. Excellent place to duck in for a cold hard one before we had to blast off to the next errand. Look forward to returning.

Google
Nicest people around! Also the food is consistent and a staple of the community. There’s a few options to choose from wether you like poultry, fish or even veggies. And the staff is wonderful every-time! Stop by and have a beer, watch a game or you can even have a nice dinner with the family, either way you’re sure to have a good time. There is the front of the house, the core and the back which lets the sun shine in. Whatever your seating desire it won’t matter because they’ve got options! By the way if you like seafood, the crab sliders are LIT 👌🏽

Google
Great food and friendly service. The brunch was to die for! Some of the best pancakes that I've had in Brooklyn. Served with fruit compote and real maple syrup. The bacon I had was Irish Bacon and it was also yummy. There was a full bar and sports playing. Also near the front an area with a fireplace. I will definitely eat at the Custom House again.

Google
This is our late-night, local. go-to place for great burgers, salads and specials. The wait staff is always prompt and helpful.

Google
I came here with a friend and the bartender was so rude, it’s definitely not a welcoming place and does not look like they want returning customers.

Yelp
Went for a late bite after the fireworks. The place was pretty busy and maybe had less staff due to the holiday. Not overly attentive service. The salmon burger and fries were pretty good, but really salty. My friend ordered the crab cake appetizer, but had wanted something not fried. I liked that they have a bathroom on the main floor for people who can't or don't want to use stairs. For a pub, a really good menu that's not limited. I would go back the next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Food was bland, bar was boring and the blonde bartender hates her job. Or she might, as soon as she learns how to do it. Never brought a water or even asked if I wanted something to drink, so I just awkwardly sat there with a sandwich - shame since I was there for beers. Then had to ask for the check twice after the meal, despite having absolutely nothing in front of me. Look I know Sunday morning shifts can be a drag, but during the football season a touch of energy wouldn't hurt. I'm rarely in brooklyn but I'm certain there are a hundred other places I would have had a good time.

Yelp
Stumbling upon this place was fortunate! Service here was completely and uniquely impressive. This place greets you warmly in pleasant surroundings. You won't believe how much food comes for the money. I'm completely pleased with everything.

Yelp
Love this Brooklyn Heights place. Great bartenders midweek in the afternoon. Low key classy place with good food, service and food.

Yelp
A neighborhood bar that is tacky. I live a few blocks away from this establishment. Unfortunately I will never come back here. I needed to use the bathroom quite urgently and I'm sure everyone has had that before. They forced me to buy something before I can even use the bathroom I said I would buy something after I use the bathroom but they said no. That is super tacky and not very hospitable as a neighborhood bar. I cannot recommend this place.

Tina M.

Yelp
This place is racist. I was there with several friends and they ignored us. Only white Jen working the bar and they were very clear that black and brown people aren't welcomed. My food was luke warm and our presence bothered the white male bartender. Do not go if you aren't a friendly of this current world !

Jack R.

Yelp
Bad service. Horrible drinks. Don't go. Bad bad bad bad. Couch is cool maybe. Other than that? Bad bad bad

Yelp
Ok. I'm a pretty casual person. I just have to say the corned beef and Swiss on rye with sweet potato fries I had last night was a spiritual experience. Absolutely glorious! Barry & Red make everyone feel welcome. Russian/thousand Island on the corned beef, honey mustard on the sweet potato fries, my long day at work was relieved by this local pit-stop. Really friendly employees as well as customers. What a neighborhood gem! Also you KNOW I love my girl Debra the early evening bartender who knows everyone's name and what everyone drinks.

Yelp
I've been passing by Custom House for some time and finally came in to see what it was about. Inside it had a typical Irish pub vibe. Dimly lit, wooden furniture, Irish flags hung around the bar. Some outdoor seating and indoor seating with a spacious bar which is were we decided to seat. I enjoyed their selection of cocktails that ranged from $13-18. We tried their custom margarita, lemonade, and mojito. The mojito had to be my favorite, it was sweet and tangy. All the drinks were strong and id definitely order them again. Unfortunately, there was no happy hour. Bartenders were great! Kind and attentive, always coming to check in. We ordered the "brooklyn bistro burger" which came with bacon and a fried egg. Definitely up there! huge portion, high quality ingredients, tons of flavor and cooked to perfection. Overall a solid bar, I will be back.

Yelp
Okay so this is literally one of my favorite "Hangout after work" bars but this time I took my Adorkable guy with me for the first time ever. And as usual it didn't disappoint. Let's talk about it! Atmosphere! So this has like a divebar feel to it which I dig. When you walk in by the entrance there's like a couch you can chill on. When you reach the very back they have a projector that comes down so the customers can watch sports. There's pretty plates on the walls and some mirrors. I love how lively the place gets it's always a good time with good people. The bathroom is spacious and always clean every time I come as well so that's a plus for me! Lol Okay food time ^_^ Dranksss! My adorkable doesn't drink so he had a ginger ale. But I ended up getting a **Raspberry Margarita** which is not on the menu only because I asked if there was any flavors I can add to my margarita and they said we have raspberry and I said sure let's go for it lol. It was pretty good! Appetizers! Ground Beef Nachos:: So If you read any of my other reviews you already know that my bf and I loveee Nachos! I did want to bring some variety to this review so I ordered a second appetizer lol. He literally rated the Nachos 3 out 5 and I have to agree it wasn't bad by any means but the meat only had a little bit of seasoning. The texture was off because the ground beef was kind of dry not really juicy. There wasn't enough cheese it was kind of hiding on the bottom meaning once you're halfway through the food that's when you start tasting the cheese sauce. The chips were a little stale so overall the dish was mediocre. A way to combat this is well you can let them know if more seasoning is needed or if there's not enough cheese tell them that's an important part of Nachos! Lol Warm Spinach Dip:: I usually get this every time I come because it's so delicious. And it didn't disappoint! Cheese yummy goodness with spinach? You literally can't go wrong! My chips were kind of stale as well but the dip made up for the taste of the chips so I was a happy camper! Lol Entrées! (It gets better just hold on lol) Chicken quesadilla:: it was really good the chicken was juicy and the cheese was monetary jack and cheddar so I was in heaven lol. The Housemade Guacamole was soooo fresh and delicious! Fish & Chips:: This was a Chantel Showstopper! Once again my bf gets a dish I love more than mine lol. The fish was surprisingly huge it was succulent moist and it literally melts in your mouth. The fries were like a 3/5 because it just wasn't salty enough to our liking lol Overall I'm still going to come back because there's so many different things on the menu to try and try again! For example one time when I came with my coworkers we had their wings and calamari and they were so good. I'll update my review when I come here next time and try other things but seriously guys come for the fish and chips because that fish was amazing! Until next time happy eating ^_^

Yelp
Not a fan, sorry to say. The place reeks of stale beer and not impressed with the cleanliness of the establishment. Also thought that the restaurant manager was pretty rude to people. In all not a great experience. With so many choices in the area I will take this one off the list and you should too.
google avatar

Fadda M.

Yelp
Clean inside, & friendly staff; & Decent food & beer selection - but beers are super over-priced - they are either trying to rape their neighbors, or assume they are all millionaire movie stars, or both. A 12-oz pour of 6 point should not be $10!? Never again.

Yelp
Stopped by here after work on a Friday evening for a quick bite and drink before heading home. Not many people inside as the work crowd hasn't gotten back to pre-pandemic levels just yet. Was able to sit at the bar without any wait. Bartender shows up shortly after we sat down asking for an order, though we didn't get menus/draft list in advance. Settled on a Brooklyn Lager ($7), while also splitting a batch of French Fries ($7). The fries are hot out of the fryer and well crisped, could have used more salt all around. Service here is up and down. Seems like management was busy getting some stuff together for the night and I wasn't sure what the final bill was going to be until the check came. Doesn't seem to be any happy hour as well, so maybe a better option for lunch.

Maureen H.

Yelp
Been there many times. Also ordered food for a small party at my apartment. Never disappointed. The customer complaining here of cleanliness mustn't eat in neighborhood pubs often. The Custom House as clean as any I've frequented, and comfortable too. A boon to the neighborhood with well-spaced tables so customers aren't sitting on top of each other like at other Heights restaurants. The owner--very friendly and helpful-- is usually on hand . Great food and vibe.

Yelp
Always consistent, good food with fresh ingredients. Best desserts in brooklyn, Summer fresh Strawberry Rhubarb pie is fabulous.

Yelp
I love this place. It's a great bar with solid pub food and drinks. Despite what others may have said, this place is most assuredly kid friendly. My two sons are always provided crayons and kids menus with coloring activities on it. Both boys love the chicken fingers and fries. The servers are all very friendly and professional. It's also a solid place to watch baseball and football. Add it all together and you get five stars on Yelp!
google avatar

Niki T.

Yelp
Excellent Shepherd's Pie and mac&cheese. Only ever ordered delivery so no comment on ambiance or staff. Solid pub food from what we've ordered so far.

Dylan B.

Yelp
Given the number of 1-star reviews, clearly this is nothing new. All I can say is avoid at all costs. Beyond the mediocrity of the food and the overpriced drinks, the staff could not be less friendly. The bartender and the host made us feel entirely unwelcome and audibly yelled "JESUS CHRIST" because I said I was not ready for a beer. Mind you, we had just walked in and my friend already ordered one. It was utterly unbelievable. They claimed we were just using them "for their TVs and air conditioning". I mean, come on. Please, please...stay away. This establishment deserves to lose business.

Michael N.

Yelp
I just experienced blatant racism at this establishment. A white male waiter attempted to move me and my daughter after we sat. I witnessed another set of patrons leave the table. Even if his explanation was logical, his approach was blatantly racist. I am extremely disappointed by this establishment driven by today's experience. I've been here dozens of times with my family, and this will be the last.

Yelp
Ordered a salad with no cheese and the salad had cheese. In addition to the unwanted cheese, the salad had a piece of hair in it. Manager never called, hence this review and likely a letter to the owner.
google avatar

Anatoly B.

Yelp
If you order anything here MAKE SURE you like that. They don't take it back and charge you anyway. Nonsense. I've never even seen anything like it.
google avatar

Yelp
Towards finishing the cobb salad, i found a stink bug in my take out salad. Got it via seamless. Will not be ordering again.

Yelp
BEST FOOD EVER! My kids love their Mac & Cheese so tonight we ordered two. It is the "perfect texture, perfectly cooked and the perfect taste." We also added the best ever chicken fingers according to my child. "It is chicken, it is breading but it is soooooo good." I ordered the Mediterranean Salmon Salad for myself and it did not disappoint. I requested goat cheese in lieu of feta and they made the adjustment, also leaving off what I requested. Sadly, there were only two pieces of orange in the salad but that is the least of an issue so, without any doubt, I still give this place five stars. We absolutely love it!

Lia G.

Yelp
We read bad reviews prior, but decided to still go and experience it ourselves. We ordered two drinks and they tasted straight like mixer. No alcohol. Bad management and how they handled it. Wouldn't recommend.

E.R. S.

Yelp
What a neighborhood gem -- they don't make them like this anymore. Super friendly staff, solid food, good music, and not too crowded. I saw that a couple of reviews mention high prices, but this is Brooklyn Heights, one of the most expensive neighborhoods in one of the world's most expensive cities. EVERYTHING around here is expensive. Can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
My fiancé and his team are regulars to Custom House so being the fact that I'm curious and wanted to see what he liked so much about this place, he brought a friend of ours and me there for dinner and most of the staff knew him. I definitely liked the ambiance because it wasn't crazy or loud. It was pretty spacious, clean and had a bit of an intimate feeling to it. My fiance got the Cajun Chicken Sandwich (but in a wrap) with fresh mozzarella cheese and apple smoked bacon. That's what he typically gets at Custom House and it's his favorite! Our friend just got the French onion soup which looked amazing and was good for a chilly night that night. I decided to get the Mac-n-Cheese and even though it was an appetizer, it was really filling! The Mac-n-Cheese was cavatappi pasta baked in a three-cheese Béchamel sauce, topped with golden bread crumbs. It was probably one of the best Mac-n-Cheese I've had! I would definitely order it again. Overall, an enjoyable and laid back pub to grab lunch or dinner in. It's opened until 4AM so you can even come here for a late snack or grub. Looking forward to my next visit!

Ed L.

Yelp
We were hosting a group of 30 out-of-towers the night before a big family affair and The Custom House had a perfect spot at the rear of the restaurant. Red and his staff were perfect in handling the crowd. Everyone got to order just what they wanted and there wasn't a single complaint. The service was great and we had a chance to mingle.

Yelp
I can't give too much of a detailed review of the Custom House. We popped in here for about an hour to meet up with some friends visiting from the U.K. before heading over to Lantern for dinner. What I can write is Custom House is on the cool and very vibrant Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights. The pleace is pretty spacious inside and comfortable. It did get a little loud as more people filled in the bar area. Our waitress was great and checked up on us frequently. Custom House has a decent selection of beer on tap and in bottles. We didn't order any food but the food we saw coming out from the kitchen looked good. Custom house is a good choice for a beer or two or three and I would go back if in the area again. Like Emily P. I was a tad disappointed we could not find any one to clear our shipment of widgets while we were enjoying our rounds.

Yelp
First time here. I had a hard time choosing from the menu because all of them sounded delicious. The food was delightful! I ordered the Classic Hamburger with Swiss cheese, avocado, and the caramelized onions. And LET ME TELL YOU! It was SCRUMPTIOUS and DELICIOUS!!! The burger tasted so amazing. Nice and hot! Fresh out of the oven. You NEED to come here. I 100% guarantee that if you come here and eat, It'll be so good! Anyway, I've said what I needed to say about @CustomHouse. You make the decision.

Jake H.

Yelp
Terrible terrible terrible. The most unfriendly host and bartender I've ever encountered in my 30 years on this earth. As a member of the Brooklyn Heights community, I pray this place doesn't last much longer.

S. R.

Yelp
Worst bloody Mary I've had pretty much anywhere. Watery, no taste and no alcohol it seemed
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
I don't live in Brooklyn Heights, so I don't go there often. That being said, before the Covid-19 crisis began, I came here in January 2020 and was very satisfied with the Chicken Schnitzel. I was in Brooklyn Heights this evening and decided to return to this restaurant. I ordered the Shredded Kale Salad with Salmon and a cider drink. My friend had the teriyaki turkey burger. We were both impressed with the food and the service. I was very pleased that all employees were wearing masks. Unfortunately, this is not the norm in restaurants and stores these days.
google avatar

Dessa R.

Yelp
Love the pub feel here...we were able to hang in the entranceway with the tv screen all to ourselves for football Sunday. The fireplace gizmo thing would've added a nice touch but we were told it was only for looks. Pancakes were delicious and enjoyed mimosas here. Located in an adorable area.

Yelp
Custom House is a lovely neighborhood bar and restaurant on Montague Street in Brooklyn Heights. I only went here to drink with friends after a sumptuous dinner in a nearby restaurant. There were few diners and people at the bar when we came in. The place is considerably quiet. The over all ambiance is cozy, especially the leather couch by the fire place in front of the entrance door. The sports fanatics sits at the bar since they are showing live sports events on TV. The place is pristine with baroque tiles on the floor. The staff are friendly and attentive. They checked on us every now and then to see if we needed anything. For me, it's a great place to chill after work day or to come just for a nightcap.
google avatar

Elizabeth M.

Yelp
In walking through the area, I decided to beat the rain and find some refuge in Custom House. I was greeted and asked where I'd like to sit. I decided on playing the bar since it was spacious and inviting. The bartender was super sweet from the moment I sat until I left. I started out with a glass of white wine, which was served with a glass and mini carafe - sweet touch. The Wine was chilled to perfection and so enjoyable on a stormy day or any day for that matter. I ordered a Cobb salad to abide with my hunger. The salad was fresh, tasty and plentiful - Well worth the price. I will definitely continue to frequent Custom House as it's clean and convenient to get to.

Yelp
Not family friendly. My 13 yr old can't even eat by himself in the middle of the afternoon when he can do it anywhere else. Sorry I spent all that money here. Never again.
google avatar

Escaped G.

Yelp
The first time I went, the service was great. The server (Cedric) was nice and attentive. I had the Caprese pasta with shrimp (it doesn't come with shrimp; I paid $6 extra). It was very good, though it needed more basil. I ordered the French Vanilla cocktail: French Vanilla Ciroc, creme de cassis, pineapple juice, and fresh raspberries. It was delicious. The second time I visited, I walked in, watched the hostess look directly at me and continue her convo instead of seating me, waited for 5 minutes, then walked out. They need better service.
google avatar

Yelp
So rarely am I inspired to write a bad review for a place, since people have off days, but when the bartender and owner are both so clearly in the wrong, I have to say something. Sorry, but if your burger falls on the floor and they try to serve it to you anyway, and you ask for a new one, and they cordially concur, BUT THEN THEY CHARGE YOU FOR TWO BURGERS on your bill, they are in the wrong. THEY SHOULDVE GIVEN A REFUND for the additional charge to that nice young girl today, who had an issue with their rancid product. It was unacceptably bad service. Though I did enjoy the part where the owner claimed airing wine makes wine taste worse than a brand new bottle. Haha. Cheap putrid wine would be better if it sat a few minutes, even though it didn't. That was classic misinformation that I got a good laugh from. I hope he was just being stubborn and rude and didn't believe aerated wine is worse.

Yelp
We wanted to try another restaurant other our usual Pinto in the Montague area. We came on a Saturday during brunch and it wasn't busy at all. We were seated right away. Our drinks came fast but my bellini was bad. The mango purée was not sweet at all and it was a bitter drink. The food was average not special. The bananas on top of my friend's French toast looked like Gerber baby food. My salmon burger was overlooked and no salt whatsoever. And who cuts iceberg lettuce like that?! We both enjoyed the sweet potato fries, which I had to finish since I wasn't finishing my salmon burger. I wouldn't give this restaurant another chance.
google avatar

Yelp
Poor experience. Me and two friends sat in the back at a table instead of the bar. There were a few flies that just kept bothering us and flying around. Seemed odd as weather has been cool out. Kids/babies being loud and crying. Chicken tenders looked good but tasted freezer burned. Spinach artichoke dip was fine but not fresh or made in house. Small drinks. Had to ask 3x for cutlery. Asked for waters, waiter only brought one for me not for other people at the table. I wouldn't go back as it was a subpar experience and waste of money.

Yelp
I am adding star because Custom House rode out COVID-19 and didn't run away from Brooklyn Heights like some of it's big chain weakling neighbors. It's great to see the manager (Red), ALMOST crack a grin. My go to meal is the BBQ flatbread and crab cake. Neither disappoints. Lately I've taken a shine to their turkey burger slider, which is freshly made, not from a package. I've also discovered CH's pasta caprese. Not fresh pasta, or particularly inventive, but has a nice homemade taste to it.

R B.

Yelp
I always enjoy meeting friends here for a drink and a bite to eat. Love the calamari, salads and burgers. Very attentive courteous staff. You are never rushed and the bar scene is very vibrant if you want to have a drink after work. The owner who also serves as the bartender from time to time is very friendly and welcoming. Safety protocols are in place so I always feel safe eating there.

Yelp
I live nearby and this place was open during the pandemic. If your looking for high quality pub food, generous drinks, excellent service, please stop by. I go for lunch and Kate night snacks!

Yelp
(It seems the same bald Irish bartender tried his best to ruin another lovely evening. And I also think he's a total homophobe.) TOTAL DISCRIMINATION. If you are gay or queer or in any way progressive, AVOID THIS BAR. I cannot believe this happened to us in Brooklyn. In NYC. In 2017. My dear friend and I were hanging out tonight on the sofa, catching up, next to the Christmas tree, enjoying the fireplace. We'd ordered two rounds of drinks, spaced out by two hours--which is normal, a round per hour. Eventually we were sitting closer and I was leaning against her, her arms wrapped around me--- on a big sofa, in front of a fireplace at midnight on a Friday night. She had just closed out the tab. The bartender, not our waiter who had been serving us all night long, came up to us 5 minutes later and rudely and abruptly said: "are you ordering anything else? because if you're not, you need to leave. Other people want this sofa. So order or leave." There was no one around us. No one hovering over the sofa-- the bar was not close to being full. No one was looking at us or waiting on us. The bartender was clearly uncomfortable with us, two women, showing affection in his bar. We weren't kissing, not touching in any type of sexual way. Fully clothed, fully appropriate. We are shocked. We pack up our things. I walk over to the bartender and say, "who? Who is asking to sit on the sofa?" He replies: "That's none of your business." "There is no one waiting on the sofa, " I say. "We've been here for two hours and have ordered two rounds. You are pushing us out because we are two women showing affection. If we were a heterosexual couple, you wouldn't have noticed us." "It's time you leave," he says. I should have caused a scene. I was too shocked. I felt disrespected and humiliated. I should have raised my voice so that everyone could hear what he had done. Instead I'm writing this review, calling his manager and complaining to the BBB. This is the Trump era, the patriarchy fully activated. Do not support this establishment.

Yelp
Driest buffalo chicken wrap ever. If you don't want to eat, it's ok. If you do, go elsewhere.

Yelp
Gem of a place a couple of blocks from the Brooklyn Bridge. We biked in from Manhattan. The bathroom is clean and spacious. (Important when you have a 10 and 12 year old with you). We sat in the outdoor/rear patio, private and great to enjoy the end of Summer weather. The food is fresh and very inexpensive for NYC/Brooklyn standards. Our waiter Cedric was polite and attentive. We will be coming back for sure.

Jack A.

Yelp
Staff was terribly rude to my partner. We tried to send back a poorly cooked steak and the server nearly talked us out of it. The manager was even ruder and made us feel as if we had done something wrong. They didn't offer us anything for the inconvenience. Mediocre food, mediocre prices, bad attitude from the staff -- in a neighborhood like this, you should expect better, and you don't have to walk far to find it.
google avatar

Yelp
Easy drinking and dining with a little bit of style, in the neighborhood. This part of Brooklyn Heights has been lousy in terms of bars for a long time. Custom House is a welcome addition, a large but cozy spot with a great selection of draghts and a friendly staff that is on it. Custom House has a lot of TVs and is like a lot of places all over that serve up beer and burgers to a rowdy crowd of sports fans. But they do it in a great looking space, with extremely tall ceilings, marble and wood fixtures, and lots of light. There's also a large seating area on the sidewalk. My favorite area is this odd room between the front door and the bar proper, with a fireplace and a sofa that always seems available. The crowd is a lively mixture of locals and people who work in the area. Lots of crusty Brooklyn "characters," too, depending on what game's on. The menu is sandwiches and other bar-type food, slightly fancied up and pretty good. Custom House is a welcome addition to the neighborhood and an easy spot to love.

Yelp
Chic hip spot to check out for a drink after work. Happy hour seems pretty biz class. Popped in one or two times last Christmas, and their Xmas decor was stunning!! I have yet to eat here, but can't wait, and will be sure to report back!
