10 Best Houston Bars & Restaurants for Mexican Food & Margaritas | Eater

"The eponymous restaurant of a famous professional wrestler, Cyclone Anaya’s is now a Houston legend, serving for more than 50 years. Most regulars come for Cyclone’s soft tacos, served with Mexican rice and beans, or the tacos al carbon, which must be ordered with the smoky grilled beef (this is Texas, ya’ll!) instead of the inferior chicken option. It’s also a requirement that you wash your meal down with a Cazarita, made with Cazadores Reposado tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice." - Marcy Franklin

From the moment we walked in we knew this would be our a new hangout spot. The atmosphere was fabulous. The energy was engaging and lovely. The food was very good I liked. My veggie fajita was unseasoned but grilled to perfection. It came with a sauce that my friend sucked up which was why I had no seasoning. I like this place and highly recommend it. The price was reasonable and the wait staff are real pros. They clearly enjoy their job. Melissa however stole the cake and served it up to us! Parking can be tricky but it’s well worth the effort.

Google
Melissa is amazing. She made our dining experience great. We were greeted with smiles and Mellisa and the Anaya staff made sure we were good.

I had an amazing time at Cyclone Anaya’s Tex-mex kitchen & would definitely be back. Had an especially great time due to the service & friendliness of the staff. My waiter was Bina & she was absolutely great, would ask for her everytime I go. Food was excellent & very clean restaurant!

Kalissa Roberts

Google
CJ was an absolutely amazing server. Had great recommendations, was able to answer any all the questions we had! 11/10 recommend. Brussels sprouts; sweet taste to it, very seasoned Rice; was good Trio; was good (the green one was a chicken one, next time I would trade it out & get a double of something if possible)

We had an amazing experience at Cyclone Anaya’s! Our server, CJ, provided the best customer service we’ve experienced in Midtown Houston. He was incredibly attentive, checking on us just the right amount without being overbearing. The food was fantastic, and the drinks were just as impressive. We sat on the patio with our puppy, and they even brought her a bowl of water—such a thoughtful touch! Highly recommend this spot for great food, great service, and a pet-friendly atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Google
Faith was a delightful server! The brisket enchiladas were bursting with Texas BBQ flavor. The tamarin glazed Brussel sprouts were phenomenal. I asked for a Piña colada (wasn't on the menu) and yet, they accommodated, with a pineapple garnish, no less! 😌💗

Google
I did a Bike an Brunch to this location, I had the crab nachos not so good. Came out cold maybe if they were hot they could have been better and had a Margarita. It was okay as well Definitely still would try this location again.Used to go to it quite a bit back in the day. So I will keep you out updated Restroom were clean, patio clean inside the restaurant was very clean as well. Location in midtown is great as well.

Esther is amazing! We came in today to celebrate my sister’s birthday and we are so happy we decided on Cyclone Anaya’s! The staff is amazing and Esther was our server and was so attentive and took care of all of our requests!

Yelp
From the moment we stepped into the restaurant, we were greeted with warm hospitality and the rich aroma of authentic spices. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between cozy and festive, with colorful décor and vibrant music. The food was fantastic but the best part was the staff. CJ was attentive and genuinely friendly, offering great recommendations and checking in often without being intrusive. You can tell this place takes pride in both its food and service. Whether you're here for a casual night out or a celebratory dinner, this spot delivers an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates authenticity, immaculate service and great vibes!

Yelp
We were looking forward to some good Mexican food, unfortunately this place did not provide it. The guacamole was just ok until we found a hair in it. Not that we could really tell anyone as we seemed to be invisible. The chicken tacos and quesadillas would have been good had they not been swimming in grease. I will say out of 4 meals 1 was good. The Relleno Asado, was flavorful and the meat was tender.

Yelp
Faith did great!!! She recommended the shrimp tacos and OMG them thangs were AMAZING!! Thank you faith!

Yelp
Went here for a late dinner after a night out. It was not really crowded. Our waiter was Micah... he was really attentive and nice. The salsa was really good. The food seemed fresh and came out hot. It was more Tex Mex than authentic Mexican food...but still had good flavor. The prices were very reasonable. The waiter even gave us chips and salsa with or to go boxes. Overall nice place for a late night eat.

Yelp
I was at a nearby spot and was hungry, so I decided to walk to Cyclone Anayas. I sat at the bar. There was one bartender. He was kind of snarky. I did not like that. This place is extremely overpriced for the quality. The location and prices do not match what's being served or the service. The taste of the food is decent. The chips are more like what they sell in the bags in grocery stores. The salsa is decent and has a bit of a kick. The egg rolls were pretty good. The amount of chicken in the egg rolls was minimal. The quesadillas were just okay. They were not tasteless, but they definitely gave off a fast food drive-through window vibe. The brisket empanadas were decent. The margaritas were pretty good. They are highly overpriced for the quality of the food.

Yelp
Cyclones is a Houston Staple and their brunch and happy hour are on point! We have tons of Tex-Mex here in Houston but, for a chain, Cyclones is in my top 3. They take pride in their dishes and how they're prepared because the flavor doesn't vary by location. You know what you're getting, and you'll def get your monies worth every visit. I haven't done dinner here in yet, I frequent the bar because my friends and I love a good margarita and some solid happy hour nibbles to nosh on while we chat and catch up on life. We go to the Gray street location, the location off Durham, and the one in Rice Village. I've never had a bad experience with the bar servers or their service and I will keep going back!

Yelp
I have been a total of 4 times, 3 times at this location and 1 time at another. The food was great across the board but the service was very accommodating at this particular location. Our server Trey catered to all of our needs each visit and the bartender Jess never misses with the drinks. The Bomba shrimp and the Brussels sprouts are TOP TIER! The manager Jackie is doing a phenomenal job managing this location. It shows with who she employs to serve the Cyclone Community. As long as Trey can be my server, my family and I will always come back. Thank you guys so much.

Yelp
Chain Tex-Mex that's like the equivalent of Chili's. It's fine, nothing special. I came with a group of 20 for a corporate outing. Guacamole and salsa were good. Everything else is meh. I got the power bowl with steak. They gave four measly pieces of meat but the rice was good and I liked the brussel sprouts. I get it's hard to work with a party of this size but service wasn't great. When half the table got their entrees, the other half was still ordering them. That said, the staff was very friendly.

Yelp
The food was great! Faith and Alex were friendly and attentive! Will come back when I'm back in the area :)

Yelp
Great tacos,, great chicharrones and attentive service, thank you, CJ! Its much appreciated.

Yelp
Esther was our server and she was fantastic!! She recommended we try the pineapple smash margarita and the blue ocean both were amazing, The fajitas were okay but wish they had more flavor you know. The place was nice and clean and the playlist was lit! We will be coming back in the near future.
google avatar

Yelp
Love that they have brunch choices here!!! Also in a great part of town (midtown) Outside seating is a perk - highly recommend

Yelp
Esther was great! Food was great! You definitely can't beat $.01 mimosa refill!! I'll be back!

Yelp
The service is really good especially from faith, prince and Trey , they was very kind and accommodating to me and helped me understand what I wanted and what I was getting . The restaurant is very clean and engaging with a nice atmosphere. (Give them all a raise they deserve it)

Yelp
Food was good for someone who doesn't like Mexican . I got the burger but didn't know that it had guacamole and spicy Mayo on it so that was an unwelcome surprise . Luckily the food was still good. Our waitress Bina was amazing! Very nice, willing to get food fixed and attentive to our drinks and needs. She made the experience worth it. Fairly chill atmosphere but still a nice restaurant to be in. For someone like me (not into true Mexican food ) it's not somewhere I'd eat but as far as service and food it was great with Bina as our waitress.

Yelp
Went downtown for date night with bae. We recreated our first and second date! We really enjoyed dinner and I'm glad they let me mix my tacos with one shrimp and one fish. It was pretty delicious. Never had the shrimp tacos before but they were good. Also had a strawberry margarita with tajin.

Yelp
We visited this location on National Margarita Day around 7pm. Let me start with the service from the manager was horrible. He was rude and didn't try to fix any of our issues. We waited a hour and half for 4 empanadas which arrived doughy and undercooked. The lemonade tasted like syrup. The margaritas were horrible! Not to mention they ran out of jumbo margarita glasses so they were giving us 2 small glasses as the jumbo replacement. It was unheard of for drinks/food to take a hour and half plus dealing with a rude sarcastic manager. I visit other Cyclone Anayas locations often so I know great service and food when received. Definitely will not be back to this location.

DeMariea B.

Yelp
I had a great time at Cyclones tonight. The food is amazing and so are the drinks. Micah is an excellent bartender. 5 out of 5 stars.

Tadanisha S.

Yelp
Great service from CJ! He made sure the homeless did not bother us whilst my daughter and I was enjoying our time in the patio. He was an extraordinary waiter.

Yelp
I couldn't resist ordering the full-size nachos, and I'm glad I did. They arrived hot and fresh, and they were absolutely delicious!

Yelp
Meh. I had 1 shrimp and 2 fish tacos - the fish tacos were not good at all - to the point were I didn't even eat the 2nd one. The fish wasn't flavorful/ not seasoned well and tasted cheap - likely farmed tilapia. The shrimp tacos were deep fried, but they had a tasty sauce that saved them, but it was definitely more breading than shrimp. So, 3 tacos total (and nothing else, no sides, no drinks, no nothing extra) came out $24 PRE TAX, as in $8 each/per taco which is insane from a restaurant on the same level as Chili's or Applebees. I'll try to take some blame just because it's the thing to do and say I ordered the wrong thing, but if it's that bad and over priced, they should take I off the menu...? I don't know maybe stick to fajitas, salsa and liquor, and maybe you'll have a better experience. The host was friendly, our waiter seemed to be in a mood/annoyed. Good luck, I won't be back.
google avatar

Chad C.

Yelp
'Sure, we can get you a plate.' For fajitas for two. No plates. NO PLATES! We had tortilla wrappers while other tables had plates???? Terrible service. Had to remind server about everything that we ordered. Food is okay, but not good enough for the service. This place is a joke. I honestly hope I don't get food poisoning.
google avatar

Yelp
Food is always good and fresh. Service is ok most times. Drinks are strong. Nice vibe was well good music to enjoy your meal.

Grace G.

Yelp
Request Bina for great service!!! You are awesome. Another great experience at cyclone midtown.

Yelp
As a frequent visitor to Houston, TX, I make Cyclone my pit stop each and every time for their great Happy Hour. The ambiance is pretty typical for a casual dine-in and patio dining (typically my preference until it gets cold outside). I truly enjoy the frozen margaritas and the continuous chips + salsa. Some items on their Happy Hour consist of select tacos and bar bites. The frozen margaritas have several flavors to choose from and to mix. I know some people tend to mix them up and order bigger margaritas. I will say their food can certainly improve as far as taste, pairings, and pricing go. The fish tacos are my typical go-to. I think the food and drinks are a bit pricey. The service can be a hit or miss depending on what is happening that day or who's serving. If you are a Houston resident or visiting, I'd definitely suggest coming here for Happy Hour after work or just to mingle with friends.

Yelp
Pros that the outdoor area is nice for when there is good weather. Green trees on the sidewalk and midtown vibes makes it cool for a date or casual lunch. Cons that the outdoor tables are in need of repair or replacement as they are shaky and unstable, we had to move from one table to another and same problem there as well. Personally we received really unsatisfactory service. I don't like talking negatively about staff so I won't mention a name but our waiter was extremely distracted. It took atleast 20 minutes to order beverages and even after ordering simple food items like soup it seemed the order wasn't put in until much later. Even to get a drink or salsa refill we had to wait a long time while he was continuously flirting with girls at an adjacent table and having such loud conversation that the entire outdoor area could hear. Just very frustrating to have to struggle to get attention for every little thing that we needed before finally finishing the meal. Ended up having to ask a female waitress to help us out which we felt bad about but what could we do, my 4 yr old got so thirsty he was eating ice out his cup. Requested sour cream to go with the kids meal cheese quesadilla leftovers (these were bland, even for kids) and were told it would be an extra charge. We don't appreciate establishments that want to charge for simple condiments as this should be complimentary especially seeing how this was a $50+ simple lunch, just felt pretty stingy for a chain restaurant. Tortilla soup was yummy tho as was the chicken chilerelleno dish. Sweet iced tea was too watery, not strong nor sweet enough, def needs to be improved at $7 for 2 glasses.

Yelp
Cut us off after 5 mimosas on their "bottomless mimosas" . Our waiter was great though, Prince was the man.
google avatar

Mariel T.

Yelp
Happy hour is really easy to get into and has a solid spread. $5/house margs and $10 jumbos. We got the cyclone taco (no dairy) and it was abut as good as we expected. Stellar service from the waiter - stars reflect the meh-ness overall though.

Yelp
Stopped by Cyclone's on a Wednesday evening to catch up with a friend. I've been to other locations but not this one. Josh was our server and he was great. So, Josh if you're reading this you're welcome and also I'll be back for my free ~queso.~ They have a really great happy hour that lasts until 7. Good job, Cyclone. I was settled on getting the happy hour shrimp quesadillas, however I was told that they were small in size. Like half of a half small, no thanks. I ended up going with the regular shrimp quesadillas that were 13 dollars for half an order. Sent them back because the shrimp was undercooked. No ma'am & no sir. I made a decision to order two fish (tilapia) tacos from the happy hour menu. 2 for 8 dollars. They were soooo good, very fresh and hella filling. I highly recommend them. I may return to this location, nice ambiance and good service. Oh, street parking is a few bucks through the meter. I'd rather not pay, but ya know.

Bertha T.

Yelp
The service, Margarita and table side guacamole were excellent. Will come again to try the rest of menu, as I don't live in this area and only stopped to have a drink somewhere.
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
We ordered the Chili relleno took them 29 minutes to figure out they didn't have any. Switched to fish tacos and there wasn't much fish in them. Ordered season roasted vegetables and they were under cooked. They were very good the last time we came in. That's it we won't be back.

Yelp
Cyclone Anaya's is a nice go-to if you're craving standard Tex-Mex that won't disappoint you and that will satisfy a variety of taste preferences if you're with a group. This particular location is super convenient. A few coworkers and I stopped by for happy hour after the World Series parade earlier this week (Go 'Stros!!!). You can order from the Happy Hour menu regardless of where you sit so no need to sit at the bar if you don't want to. $5 house margaritas $10 large 'ritas They've also got great food options on the happy hour menu such as queso, empanadas (brisket, chicken or shrimp), flautas, quesadillas, sliders (my coworker was not a fan of the sliders fyi). I had 2 regular sized house 'ritas, a couple of empanadas, some quesadillas and queso w/ ground meat (queso molida), got good and full for about $35 with tip! The service was also great despite them being short staffed and serving people on World Series Parade day. A little slow but again they were short staffed on a big day plus I was in no hurry so no major complaints from me there. The only other minor thing I would complain about is that the tortilla chips came out room temperature and the first basket of chips they brought out were stale. But given the circumstances of the day the chip situation wasn't too big of a deal. Overall a great experience and I'd gladly return.

Yelp
Town and country location. Cinco de mayo was off the chain. Live DJ. Management visited every table. Robert was the best waiter, very attentive and knowledgeable, and also a cutie every check correct. Very personable, great spot to hang out, food and ambiance perfect

Kim F.

Yelp
Cyclones Midtown has officially fallen off!!! Crab nachos used to be great! Now just a little crab here & there and cheese. Well, you see the pictures.

Charissa F.

Yelp
We went for a birthday party, the food was great and CJ was a fantastic waiter, very attentive!

Yelp
We attended a farewell dinner for a friend and colleague at Cyclone Anaya's Midtown. Our group[ was roughly 40 people, divided between what was effectively two long tables. CJ was the waiter tasked with taking care of our table of 20. Although he had been working at the restaurant for only three weeks, he was not only the consummate professional, but also very friendly, engaging, and charming. He even made sure to get our entire table's order in before the kitchen got swamped, as it was starting to get busy that Friday night. As to the food and drinks, kudos to the back of the house and to the bar for outstanding appetizers, entrees, and margaritas. It appears that the restaurant may have been short-staffed that evening (although it did not affect CJ's outstanding care of our table), as Kedrick, the manager on duty, was leading his team from the front and helping serve the patrons that evening. Such leadership inspires his team to provide the quality of food and service that our entire group experienced. Many thanks for an outstanding and memorable evening.

Bryan C.

Yelp
amazing spot & drinks were on point. Micah was i server who was amazing btw and from NYC. KENDRICK was the manager and did a great job with making us feel welcomed.

Yelp
First off let me say I'm leaving this review first and foremost for the beyond incredible service that we received tonight From C.J. We arrived 30 mins before closing and that didn't stop him from giving some of the best service I've ever received. And I've eaten at many restaurants. He was patience and attentive and kind. He explained and suggested menu items. He continued to check on us and made sure to let us know he was t rushing us. We chatted for a bit and I learned that he is from Detroit. Even being new here, he made us feel special. And he took pride in his work. Customer service is not a very easy job but he knocked it out the park. I tipped him even before the food came out. Oh and the food fresh hot and on point. The fajitas the queso, chips. And the nachos were all prepared to our liking. I wish this young man nothing but the best. Keep up the Great work C.J and welcome to Houston Side note My Son is CJ also.

Yelp
Great place walking into. The food is awesome, and the service is just as awesome as well.. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back. Make sure to ask for Aiden as your server, he's very polite and extremely professional!!!
google avatar

Marvin K.

Yelp
The beef fajita enchiladas with brussels sprouts, and rice were sensational. I also had the brisket empanadas that I wasn't able to capture but I highly recommend, it was really tasty. My waitress Jessica was very friendly and informative of the menu items. She recommended the Casa Rita drink that was strong and just what I needed to hit the spot. The atmosphere was family friendly and a good spot for a date night.

Yelp
Food was great, service was also great! Our servers name was Dajah, she did a great job and was super sweet!

Yelp
their chicken & waffles are definitely top 2 and NOT NUMBER 2! so sweet, the chicken full of flavor, serve this all day please

Yelp
Very bad experience at Cyclone Anaya's Midtown location. First, the food was excellent. We both had fish tacos. They were delicious. The cerviche was outstanding. Service was wonderful. Problem came when we paid. My girlfriend gave me a $100 gift certificate for Christmas. I showed the digital gift certificate to our server. "Sorry, our scanner is broken, we can't take it." "Been happening several times tonight, please pay with your credit card." "No. I said. This is your problem not my problem, you need to solve your problem. I already have $100 in credit at Cyclone Anaya and that's how I intend to pay." The server called the manager. The manager told me "You have to pay with your credit card, our scanner is broken." I replied, "I am never paying you with my credit card, this is your problem, not my problem, you should fix it." I told him he could take the gift card number and a photo of the QR code and use those when his system was fixed. "No, he said, "you need to pay with your credit card." I repeated, "I am never paying you with my credit card." At that point the manager told me I was being "rude" and "the two of you need to leave the restaurant now." He ushered us out of the restaurant. He was angry. We paid nothing. It was a disappointing end to a beautiful dinner.

Yelp
MOLD WOULD NOT RECOMMEND NOR EAT HERE !! Stoped in for a happy hour and was extremely disappointed. It wasn't busy at all and we sat at the bar . So first off when we ordered shots the bartender put our shot down and they spilled out they weren't over filled so not sure if it was her attitude or just how she works but it wasn't right to me especially when it's top shelf tequila. If the bathrooms look like the pictures I could only image what's going on else where . Just going off of the service I'm glad I did not eat here .

Kæ E.

Yelp
Amazing food, margaritas and customer service! Tati was our bartender today but I was here last night and Efy was amazing. We love our bartenders here at Cyclone Anaya's! They have the best happy hour $5 margs and those chicken skewers are amazing!!! The managers here give off the best vibes! Parking is very secure, it's right behind the restaurant only $6 for 3 hours! Won't be going anywhere else for happy hour now! Love this team!
google avatar

Lisa M.

Yelp
The food and service are great. Cyclones has some really healthy and delicious options, like the pollo power bowl. The brussel sprouts were over the top yummy! Our server Carl was very nice and helpful. As we were leaving he asked us to come back for the brunch on the weekends.

Celeste B.

Yelp
Margaritas are amazing. Salsa is amazing. Food is amazing! Have come here for many occasions from birthday to graduation. Ask for Dajah

Yelp
Great Mexican restaurant if you're in the Houston Downtown area. Great location that's around many shops and other restaurants. I recently went for brunch and it was a nice vibe. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating without having to wait in line (if you're familiar with Houston brunch spots then you know waiting in line can just be a part of the process). Love how you can get brunch dishes or regular Mexican dishes. I got the hard tacos with a side of guacamole and a margarita on the rocks. Both were good and very reasonable prices. My waitress Jariah was very knowledgeable of the menu and helped me make my selection when I told her what I was in the mood for. She continuously came to check on me, and offered a great all around customer service experience. I will definitely be back when I'm in Houston.

Marty H.

Yelp
Enjoyed a great meal with friends. Good service, good food. Fun spot. Power bowl, enchiladas are favorites.
