The Best Bars in Seattle | Eater Seattle

"Since 1990, this historic grunge bar/cafe has been luring customers in with its wise, winking neon eye gazing out upon First Avenue. Half diner and half dive, Cyclops is where the industry folks and old-guard Sub Poppers would hang out after shows at the nearby Croc or practice at Black Dog Forge around the corner — and where some still do. The food’s solid, the Rainier’s cold, the lamps are lava, the paintings are velvet, the dress code is hoodies and flannels. Get the crispy polenta fries." - Meg van Huygen

An Oral History of the Food Behind Seattle’s ’90s Grunge Scene | Eater

"A humble Middle Eastern spot that reopened from an earlier all-ages hangout and slowly attracted a creative, international clientele; it shared thin walls with rehearsing bands (and some rodent problems), so service staff sometimes masked the noise with their own stereo. The food offered reliable staples like hummus, baba ghanoush, salads and pasta, with more ambitious dinner specials, and the menu and atmosphere appealed to artists even when daylight hours left the place mostly empty." - Bruce Pavitt

Google
Super fun decor. I'm vegan and the vegan bean quesadilla was really good! Also, the bloody marys are yummy! Will definitely return!

Christopher Powell

Google
Cool spot for an evening bite to eat and a drink. It was quiet when we were there due to a show across the street but I'm sure it got busy when the show got out.

Bryan Born

Google
Dane was great! Classic Caesar salad had excellent chicken; my Cubano was everything I wanted in a Cuban sandwich, hot and melty with well balanced flavors and a unique pepper mayo. This Saturday night dinner spot will be remembered next time in Seattle!!

Laura

Google
I’ve not had food beyond the sweet potato fries here, but they were the perfect app w/ the drinks. I was very happy to know they had the ingredients and made a French 75 in the manner it was supposed to taste. Cool Ambience, good service, good art, but all my times here I was seated at a bar (personal preference)

Iconic Thibodeaux (Iconic Thibodeaux)

Google
Always a solid staple of Belltown. Everyone is so cool, late night food options, always great specials, and the artwork is unique. There's 2 entrances, one is restaurant side one is bar side. Never had a bad experience here. The polenta fries are unique and a MUST.

Kel Dakota

Google
Really cool place. Cool vibe. Great service. Great drinks. Been there a couple times and will continue to go back. Their Boundary Bay 1 Eye PA beer is so good.

Amber Barnes

Google
One of the Baristas cut me off while I was trying to park. Then talked about it to her other coworkers. Don’t go here rude service, and is atmosphere was uncomfortable after that. I don’t recommend at all. The whole experience made the food/drink not enjoyable.

Carol Born

Google
Had one of the best Caesar salads here. Food was generous and delicious. Dane was our server and was fast and friendly. Didn’t try any drinks but would go back!

Yelp
Great place to stop in for a drink and some food, especially before or after a show at the Crocodile. Bartenders are good. It can get busy and noisy here.

Yelp
Best tacos I think I've ever had. There was so much meat in each taco. The mango salsa was amazing. Such a unique spot but they have amazing food. This spot will not disappoint!

Yelp
Dive bar with an eye theme. Chill and straightforward inside. A good spot to pre-game or wrap up your night!

Reservations S.

Yelp
If you find yourself in Belltown on a weekend, you must stop by for the breakfast burrito. They are grilled with french-fries inside! SO YUMMY! :D And you can choose veggies or meat. I got grilled veggies inside mine. The staff is always very welcoming and kind too! Perfect way to start a Sunday.

Yelp
Always friendly service and the burgers are so delicious! Best in Seattle. I recommend checking them out if you haven't tried their food before. I walked by many times before stopping in. I was missing out!

Robyn N.

Yelp
Very rarely write reviews, but Cyclops is worth a mention. Great food, great vibes, great music, authentic Seattle punk/rock sensibility. The service is ABOVE AND BEYOND!!! Matt might be the best bartender in the world... he will remember your name and your favorite drink, and treat you like a VIP even if there are fifty other people there ordering at the same time. Dude works his ass off with incredibly positive energy and deserves a friggin gold medal for his efforts, often having to tend bar and wait tables at the same time. It's clear the owner and other staff there take pride in the place and strive for quality in what they do. Anyway, this has become my new happy place after work. TEN STARS!!!!

Lauren G.

Yelp
Bartender Dane was amazing very welcoming and attentive, checking up on us and all other guest and super quick quality service . We came here before a show at the crocodile and the service was perfect !

Kate P.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Friday around 3, just when hungry was turning to hangry. Was seated immediately and my drink and food came quickly. I had a blue cheese burger and fries and a coke. Exactly what I needed and I love the fry seasoning. My server was very kind and called me "hun" which never hurts. On top of all this good stuff, the people who work here seem to really enjoy each other and the good vibes carry through. Thanks Cyclops!

Yelp
One of the best Seattle-esque bars downtown. Love this place. Ask for the Sauvignon Blanc Punch.

Laurie M.

Yelp
Amazing environment. I had the chicken quesadilla, the best I've ever had! Plus a couple of the specialty berry drinks that I watched made from scratch, excellent! Great experience all around! Friendly and helpful bartender! First time I've been here and just moved to Seattle, felt safe being by myself. Highly recommend!

Josh P.

Yelp
Cha cha chicken sandwich is one of the best sandwiches in the greater Seattle area. Hands down. Awesome service and cool vibe.
google avatar

Namrata M.

Yelp
The bartenders and staff are so rude and unprofessional. The bartender accused us of skipping the rails and entering when we were actually trying to exit the place. When I confronted her about her behavior, she just mimicked me in an animated voice. The bartender was clearly drunk.
google avatar

Sarah E.

Yelp
The best funky place around. I love it!! The food is great, the decor is unique and the service is excellent. I been to this place a few times over the last 10 years and the service and quality has never waivered.

Yelp
When ordering drinks the bartender told us he would not serve us anymore if we didn't tip more. Ruined the whole mood of the birthday and also said he was going to add a 20% gratuity for a drink my friend was ordering for the group size. Do not recommend at all.

Andy U.

Yelp
visited this bar with friends to enjoy a great night celebrating our friend's birthday. All to be ruined by the bitter bartender working on 7/13/24 between 12am and 2am. After paying for drinks, he decided to call us all out and make everyone in the bar uncomfortable by saying how he deserved a higher gratuity than he was given. This bartender should first learn to approach customers with decency and respect before antagonizing others to fulfill his ego. I'm sure his fragile arms worked so hard to pour those shots to deserve an outstanding tip to go with his attitude. He could've approached anyone in an entirely different manner but instead he disrespected several customers by threatening to not serve us unless we gave him 20 % tip. What an unforgivable experience. Will never come back to this bar and will encourage others to do the same.

Yelp
Omg! The best fries anywhere! Fish and chips were great. Blackened salmon tacos were also top-notch. I am not a Cole Slaw fan, but this was delish. Cool ambiance! Friendly wait staff and bartender. Sat in the Panther Room!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by for a couple drinks after leaving Pikes - Inside is a little dark and divey but we didn't come for the ambience The drinks were ok - be prepared for some pre mix in them if it's not your thing Cheers

Brady S.

Yelp
This place says that it has a big menu but really doesn't have anything on the menu. This place is mainly for 21 and older meaning it's not kid friendly. If you have a child with you I would not recommend this place.
google avatar

Juan C.

Yelp
Service slow, food bad,and no genuine people! My friend said it was great but it is not!
google avatar

Debbie M.

Yelp
Hefe, we love Cyclops, and we love you! And John and Gina, we love this neighborhood place. Sitting outside on your patio is the epitome of summer. Or....we'll sit inside and admire the people watching from inside, where we're all warm and cozy!
google avatar

Kaleigh C.

Yelp
Literally the worst bartender I've ever encountered. Very crabby. Would not recommend as you cannot predict his mood.

Yelp
On the last Friday in October, we actually walked in and sat at the bar in Cyclops, rather than doing take out. My wife enjoys their burgers, and when picking up take out, felt welcomed. She wanted to check out the bar, and I agreed after a fantastic concert at The Rendezvous, a couple of blocks away. I sensed a "freeze" immediately after walking in. We were older and dressed for a night out. In Seattle, that would be coined pretentious. Myopia goes left and right along the social continuum; the conservatives expecting a toned down appearance, and Seattle liberals expecting a T Shirt and jeans. Thus, if you don a fedora, dark glasses, and a checkered wool jacket you aren't fitting in to either tribal requirement. I guess our "dressed for a night out" offended the patrons at the bar and the bar keep. We ordered our respective burgers and downed our drinks. After paying our bill, we left without a word of thanks or a goodbye. People at Cyclops were decidedly cold and unfriendly. To shun people because you find the clothes they're wearing too chi chi or urbane, is myopic behavior as prejudicial as hating people of color. Seattle, it works both ways. No one should be judged by their exterior and treated like second class citizens because your sensibilities were disturbed by their appearance.

Yelp
Came here on a weekend and they have a wide variety of breakfast items to choose from. My boyfriend ordered their 'cajun hash', which came with andouille sausage, peppers and cheese on top of potatoes. We both thought this dish was just okay. It lacked a cajun flavor. I ordered 'chilaquiles', which we both liked a lot. It came with a sunny-side up egg and green salsa on top of chips. Overall, I would definitely come back here for breakfast and to try out their lunch food items.

Erin T.

Yelp
The bartender wearing a #10 jersey made sure that the unhinged guy I was talking to was long gone before I left. He let me stay in the bar for 40+ minutes after my last drink so that I would get home safe (AND thank you bar patrons Michelle and Chris for keeping an eye on me)! The Moscow Mules were also very nice :) overall I'd absolutely come back to this bar any time.
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
The bartender gave our friends some attitude when they tried to order a not-Rainer beer, which ok I get were in Seattle. I also love it when bartenders and baristas tell you like it is! Their job is hard and people suck! However, the thing that sunk this review was when the bartender gave me major attitude when I asked for a soda water. I don't drink, but like to still socialize and I just think it's a bummer when people make you feel shitty about that. Esp when I'm willing to pay and tip for water. Right around the corner for us but sadly we won't be back

Howard G.

Yelp
Polenta was delicious! Bartender was very friendly and attentive. Awesome little spot!

Yelp
I don't usually like hand-cut fries, but most of these were crispy and pretty good. I typically only get pickles, ketchup, and mustard on a burger, but I decided to try the Cyclops/One-Eye burger (sans cheese and mayo). I liked that it came with caramelized onions *and* pickled red onions. The fried egg on top gave it a lot of great, greasy-in-a-good way flavor. And you can't go wrong with a brioche bun. It's probably the best burger I've ever had in my life. I wouldn't change a thing about it.

Yelp
We stopped in here during our stay in Seattle. It was around 6pm on a Friday and the place was pretty dead. 3 different servers visited our table in the hour we were there. Almost everything we requested, alcohol and condiment wise, they were "out of". Their menu was misleading on the sides that came with my burger. When my food came out, I had no fries. When I asked about the fries, I was callously told "you get fries or salad, not both". I explained that their menu read that you get both and I had told the waitress that took our order both and wasn't corrected. He replied, "do you want fries"? to which I said, "well I really don't want to pay more." He said, "okay!" and just walked off. My burger was so small, it didn't even fill out the bun. So I paid $15 for a burger, lousy customer service, and attitude. Would not recommend this place.

Yelp
Feeling like I should be a better neighbor and come here more often. The inside has a desirable eclectic corner bar vibe. There is plenty of bar seating, but also cozy booths. They have added more outdoor seating since COVID. I tend to gravitate towards their 1 Eye PA - a beer brewed for them by Boundary Bay. It's a crisp, hoppy west coast style IPA. To eat, wings. They are meaty, not breaded, and covered with a medium level buffalo sauce. I have gotten the wings more than once and I will get them again. The service was friendly and attentive.

Adam F.

Yelp
Had just arrived in Seattle and was craving a good burger. This was within walking distance to our hotel so we decided to give it a try. Looks like it's more of a night life type of joint but still very good. We arrived early afternoon and not busy at all. Service was quick and attentive. We both ordered cheeseburgers and they didn't disappoint. Perfect portion, well cooked and very tasty. Came with some hand cut fries that were very good. We both left very satisfied. I would recommend for a drink and a burger.

Lisa N.

Yelp
Service sucked. Sat forever and didn't get help. Went to bar and bartender looked at us and said he'd help us next then helped someone else next.

Margarita N.

Yelp
We just wanted a quick bite and a beer This place is so cute!!! I had the Bleu Cheese Burger and my boyfriend had the Ruben. Both of ours tasted great! I even got a t-shirt from there because their merch is clever (my shirt is all white with those symbols)

Yelp
Went here for dinner and enjoyed the food. This review is for the food only. I ordered the sweet potato quesadilla which was tasty and unique. The flavors blend together interestingly: sweet, savory, and sour. I personally don't think I would order this again, but my fiancé absolutely loved it. He ordered the chicken enchiladas and devoured them in minutes. They were surprisingly filling. We expected to be hungry, as the plates were smaller than we expected, but we left feeling satiated. Our server was friendly and provided great service. We're planning on returning and trying other things on the menu, and maybe grab some drinks next time. The location is convenient for Belltown, as it's located on 1st near the bars and restaurants.

Yelp
This lovely neighborhood bar has been in Belltown for over 20 years. Owned and operated by a strong woman business owner, Gina Kaukola and her husband John Hawkley. These two have done a tremendous job on keeping the history of Seattle alive thru art and the consistency of their business. The vibe is creative and hip. The food will never disappoint, cold pints of locally tapped beer par well with the ambience and friendly staff. Definitely a Belltown favorite but most importantly a place in Seattle's history.

Joseph W.

Yelp
This place was on our radar since it has an eye as it's marquee..so it caught our eyes. We checked out the food online and decided it was worth a shot, and the food did not disappoint. Shown are our 3 choices from the Carne asada sandwich to the so cal burger and the Bueno burger all served with fries. There are 2 entrances so be sure the Cafe side is for the under 21 crowd. (like us with kids) The ambience is a little of everything but it works with the vibe there. Service was good for being all star weekend in Seattle, but all our needs were met. I would recommend and come back.

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday night around 10:30 and there wasn't much going on. There were a handful of people, dim lights, food, bar, and that's about it. Actually I'm really surprised it was so slow on a Saturday night. I will say that it's probably a good place to go if you have had a little too much to drink and don't want to embarrass yourself at one of the fancier bars nearby. You can find an empty table in a corner to chill and eat a snack and drink some water. I wish there had been some music or some form of entertainment though. We ordered chips and salsa. The chips were good, salty, and extremely hot. We actually had to wait about 5 minutes for them to cool down! The salsa was not good. It tasted like some cloves of garlic had been added to water. It's an okay place to waste a little time, especially if, like I said, you had a little too much to drink and need a place to chill/re-group. A couple reviewers call it a dive bar but I think it's a step or two above a dive.

Yelp
Seems like a great place but have been inconsistent each time I have been here with regards to service. Service is king. I do these reviews as impartial as I can be and only assess based on factual empirical data I experience. I review service, food, ambiance, and if I can tell management which equals cleanliness, upkeep, etc.. I came to this place in my search of a good burger in Belltown. Just moved close by and I'm hitting all the local spots. I had come here before like a couple weeks earlier (Friday August 23rd: 12:30PM) during the weekday and had a pleasant experience with a wonderful Bartender. She was great and actually convinced my Girlfriend and I to come back and try their pancakes, said they were the "best in town". We were sold at that time in coming back. Fast forward, we stop in yesterday and the experience was completely different. Came in time was around 6pm Wednesday weekday. Sit at the bar and we get menu's and water, all ok. Have questions on the menu and that's when it got a little uncomfortable. I asked if we could make changes to the menu items, like "no mayo", or "no onions". Answer, "we can change anything and everything you want." Did I sense a little attitude?, maybe it was just me. Anyway, so we continue to order some food, Quesadilla with chicken and grilled cheese sandwich, "Please no mayo or aioli sauce on the grilled cheese please". Said it twice to be sure and we clarified we could change it once we did decide to order. Ok food comes out about 10 minutes later and my girlfriend is eating the grilled cheese and notices the Pablano Aioli sauce inside, what we explicitly asked not to have. I thought we covered this, asked the bartender to redo I just can't do the Aioli or mayo type sauces, don't feel like I need to justify why. Not sure why but she questions us on the differences between mayo and aioli sauce. Ok we asked several times to not have it and you brought it, whatever it is, just own it and fix it. Not so easy here. From here it was slow grind to get the next beer, had to ask some guy working behind the bar but he wasn't going to make the move unless I flag him. They did get us a replacement sandwich which was fine, just plain grilled cheese, good. I do give this place props for a good quesadilla though. It was outstanding and the chicken was awesome, one of the best Ive had. Too bad the negative attitude killed it here. We politely left, the attitude killed the vibe. On the other hand, the regulars here are good and getting good service, I'm sure they love it. Maybe not so much for new folks or outsiders. Also I think it depends on the bartender and how much rope they have to just do what they want with no accountability, that's poor management. Like I said, totally different experience from the last bartender I met at this place a few weeks back. Service: Poor - reasons are attitude it was palpable, maybe cooks messed up the order, my bet was the server. Getting a drink you had to ask for it, usually its good when they come to you. Fixing of the food did happen quickly and was satisfactory. Food: Taste was great for both dishes we had once adjusted. Quesadilla was outstanding. Ambiance: Seems like the perfect little place you would want to come. Good location. Management: Probably needs to watch the servers a little closer and hold them accountable for bad service decisions or forgetfulness. Read these reviews and take action if you see problems or patterns. Overall assessment, I wouldn't come here again, just didn't get a good vibe in this last visit and left uncomfortable. I don't like to assess based on a single bartender or server, but the other folks their weren't filling in much to help. I'm sure they are all busy but the backup didn't seem to be there for our bartender.

Shakira L.

Yelp
Customer service is really bad. I like the food here but it's always a hit or miss with the service and this last visit was the last time I'll go. Took 45 minutes to order a Caesar salad (+30 minutes) to go which barely had any dressing on it in the first place so they charged me for a side of extra dressing (+15 minutes). Plus the bartender was closing out everyone else around me and took forever to give me my check. Honestly could've walked out of there with my food way early on. Depending on the staff you can tell when it's more hostile and prejudice but this time it was more careless than anything. Ignoring me when I was right in front of them. Didn't feel good and if I noticed the time while sitting there I would've walked out without my food because it was ridiculous waiting as long as I did for salad and dressing separately.

Suzanne C.

Yelp
I do not recommend. My friend's drink was dosed with something when she went to the restroom. When we contacted the bar the following day about viewing the camera footage (to possibly warn others of this individual who dosed her drink) we were laughed at and hung-up on. Watch out for the people who hangout here. Not a friendly neighborhood bar.

Yelp
The polenta fries are a must have. Good menu, good atmosphere, can't go wrong with Cyclops
google avatar

Rab B.

Yelp
Went here because I saw the blinking eye for the sign and had to see what kind of bar it would be. It had good service and cold beer what else could you want?
google avatar

Roger Q.

Yelp
Great local haunt in north part of downtown. Strategically placed between the space needle and pikes place to enjoy a cocktail half way. They have their own IPA and a complete bar for whatever floats your boat. Sit at the bar and enjoy.
google avatar

Scott Z.

Yelp
Good food. Good beer. Strange drunk guy in here though. Solid place to go for bar food and a drink or two or three or more.
google avatar

Kelsey B.

Yelp
Cyclops is quickly becoming my favorite neighborhood pub. Located on the corner with a nice sunny patio this somewhat of a dive bar is a surprisingly great place for drinks and food. Okay, maybe I am a little bias because they offer a plethora of vegan options and this is hard to come by in a casual bar environment. Happy hour Monday - Friday from 3-6 includes $1 off drinks and $2 off apps. The beer selection isn't huge, but they have the basics (IPA, Pale Ale, Cider, Red Ale) as well as a decent cocktail list. The food though! Yum yum. For the vegan options they use Field Roast Veggie Burgers and Chao 'cheese' (my personal favorite vegan cheese brand). The service here is really impressive. The last time I came the place was about half full with diners/drinkers and the one bartender took care of the whole place solo. bravo. Totally recommend this chill neighborhood spot for drinking and grubbin to anyone - cheers!
google avatar

Julia V.

Yelp
This place has a really cool atmosphere and delicious food. I'd recommend the happy hippy burger or the chicken mango salad. The owners are super friendly and always a good time. Great vegan options too. Oh yeah, and the art is amazing. Definitely recommend and I go here every time I visit Seattle.
google avatar

Anthony H.

Yelp
Really good with a full vegan menu (smaller than regular but still..) They have chao cheese and it melted well for nachos and macaroni My kids had the "kids size" mac and cheese and it was still too much. Field roast hamburgers.

Ashley T.

Yelp
Bartender wasn't very nice and refused to do separate checks for me and my friends visiting from out of town :/
google avatar

Jacob S.

Yelp
My wife and I have stayed at the Ace eight upstairs at least a half-dozen times, but have never come in the Cyclops; until today. A full bar, diner-like setting, and our waitress was super nice and on point. The food menu was full of great sounding options. My wife and I settled on a steak sandwich and a chicken sandwich; so we could split them as per usual. Loved loved loved them! My wife (starving), finished both halves way before me. Vegan options for my daughter, the cocktail list, great food selection now makes the Cyclops an automatic part of every Ace Hotel adventure from here-on-out. GO HAWKS!!!

Yelp
Thank you Josh for being such a great bartender and server! To the whole restaurant by yourself, you served everyone with a great attitude! Also great food and cocktails, love this place. Great experience!
