Ocean Malasada Is Bringing Its Wildly Popular Hawaiian Pastries to a Portola Ice Cream Shop - Eater SF

"A Richmond District resident has made a sweet video tribute to Clement Street’s many restaurants and stores. SF native Joey Yee is the man behind “What To Do In San Francisco’s 2nd Chinatown,” a short film that guides viewers through the area’s many restaurants, bars, and stores. Spots like legacy business Toy Boat Dessert Cafe, Irish pub the Bitter End, and Hong Kong-style restaurant D & A Cafe all get a nice turn in the spotlight." - Eve Batey

Disclaimer: I deliberately waited over 24 hours before writing this review as I am trying to write this review as impartially as I can. When we visit the establishment, we normally dine in. However, we figure since we were in a hurry to get home, maybe try their takeout. I probably should, but I typically don’t examine the itemized receipt for accuracy. I thought maybe I will try examining it one time, and behold, it was inaccurate. I was charged $53.80 for a $45 meal before taxes: San Francisco doesn’t have a sales tax that is nearly 20%! When I brought this issue to the store owner and the three waitresses and waiter who were present, instead of issuing a refund of the overcharge, I was yelled at, not that I understand what they were saying, since they were using Cantonese, a dialect which I don’t speak. The only waiter who could speak fluent English, however, has for unknown reasons chosen not to help. The foursome insisted that they don’t calculate the numbers on the receipt, that someone else told them to charge me $53.80 for a $45 meal after tax, so they did. The male store owner in particular insisted that the math isn’t wrong, that a $45 meal should be $53.80 after San Franciso tax, yelling the entire time—although he didn’t calculate the numbers, and that he was told by someone else. Strangely, the store owner suddenly decided to give something back, but then as suddenly decided not to give them back, back and forth a few times, each time giving less and less of the overcharge back. I thought to myself, that it was only about $5 overcharge, so while I don’t want to tip for such bad service (who enjoys paying to be yelled at?), I was just going to let it slide and take my order as soon as it was ready. So when the final dish came, I just walked out of the restaurant, ready to drive home since I live afar. When we got home, we were shocked to find that, the last dish, which was the topmost box, was wrong: I ordered fish with bitter melon but it has not a single piece of fish in it! This has never happened with the dine-in. Someone I was eating with suggested that this can be their retaliation since it was the last dish that was delivered after I inquired about the overcharge, where the store owner was yelling at me. I readily dismiss the possibility: maybe it’s just a coincidence, although to be fair, they have never messed up the order before, during the countless times we were eating there. And the place wasn’t busy that day either but I still refuse to believe that they would do such a thing on purpose. In sum, I would advise not ordering takeout at this place. As for dine-in, usually the food is fresh, but on a few occasions, it wasn’t fresh at all, and when the people I was eating with complained, it was readily dismissed. I guess I should known back then that this establishment doesn’t treat its customers with due respect. In sum, I think the service isn’t acceptable, the food can be good if they visit them on a good day, and the atmosphere is reasonably quiet. I however am unsure if I can recommend this place after this experience.

I walked into this restaurant randomly. I ordered beef chow fun. The dish is very satisfying.

I love this place been eating here for more than 20 years they have recently re done the inside and made it more clean and friendly, but that plates are still good and big best deal in town. Good quality Chinese food hey have big dishes, family style if you get the same dish menus rheumatism come with rice and soup!’ Really friendly and daily al type family place would recommend to anyone. But you have to bring a few people with a big appetite to try a lot of plates It’s a clement st classic

Google
Great value for takeout. 4 orders for $45 and comes with rice and soup. I used to dine in person occasionally pre-Covid. The place looks a lot more "modern" now.

Google
Really good Chinese food. Got the four dishes and rice and soup combo and fed the whole family. The soup of the day was amazing. All of the food was a great deal and will keep us well fed for generations. I especially enjoyed the chow fen. Will definitely be going back again to get more of this delicious and cheap food!

Google
We went to order food with colleagues today and took it back to the hospital. When we started eating, there were bugs in the chicken wings. So we kindly called the restuant to tell them to be more careful next time, but the owner told us that the chicken wings were sold to them by someone else Someone else sold it to them, so if you want to complain, blame them instead of saying they have no problems. Their attitude is very bad We will never go to such a restaurant again.

Takeout 5/9/2021. I was at another restaurant trying to do takeout on Mother's day and their kitchen was backed up for two hours. Luckily D&A Cafe saved the day. My meal was ready in 15 mins after I ordered in person. Tonight we had the mother's day lobster special, pea shoots, baked seafood spaghetti, salt pepper spareribs, squid and it came with rice and soup. The staff did an excellent job anticipating the mother's day rush and got everyone's takeout orders in and out as humanly fast as possible. It takes a seasoned chef to get orders out that fast and for it to taste reasonably well. I like how they poked holes in the to-go container on the salt pepper spareribs so it didn't get soggy when I got it home. The lobster, pea shoots and baked seafood spaghetti tasted alright. The salt pepper spareribs and squid were only meh. The included soup was a good appetizer. Good job D&A Cafe!

Google
Absolute gem. Random walk in but it’s some of the best chinese food I’ve had. The chicken was perfectly breaded and crispy and saucy. The beef was tender and high quality. The walnut shrimp was INSANE. 10/10 spot. Deserves a higher rating some people need to learn what sales tax is SMH.

Yelp
complimentary tea and soup when you enter! they don't make them like this anymore. polite and attentive service. food is good! and decor is very nice and cozy

Yelp
D&A Cafe used to be a go-to spot for my family before the pandemic, and I remember it being so popular that we often had to wait outside for a table. I recently took my family back, and while the experience brought back memories, a lot has changed. The ambiance is unique, with a blend of modern and traditional Chinese decor, but the restaurant was surprisingly quiet with barely any customers. The food was just okay, not bad for the price, but not particularly memorable either. Some dishes were a bit too salty for my taste. Given the changes, I think this spot might be better suited for takeout than dining in. While it's not the same as I remember, it's still an option for a quick, budget-friendly meal.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night because I saw they have a special where you can get four dishes for $45 and it comes with rice and soup for up to four people. The restaurant itself is a mix of funky and traditional Chinese decor. The food was good and tasted as expected for Cantonese food, except the bean curd stick with pea leaves dish was lacking flavor. My favorite dish we had was the Peking spareribs. Now the reason for my two star rating: the entire time we were sitting inside the restaurant, there were flies flying around us and the food. And there were dead flies on the ledge next to the booth we were sitting at. It grossed me out so much, I would never eat here again. If you want to try the food, my recommendation is to get take out.

Yelp
We were expecting affordable chinese food. They kept the Chinese name of the restaurant, however once you walked in, you would notice that ownership has changed and the ambiance was different. Service was actually quite quick. We ordered the meal combo: which was very good price for food nowadays. We loved all the 4 dishes especially the sour pork ribs, they were very delicious. However, we wished there were even more choices of meat dishes in the meal combo menu.

Yelp
I try to get a meal here whenever I get in the neighborhood. This has been one of the most consistent restaurants that has been in business for a very long time, I'm glad they're still in business. I mostly get takeout so I can get lots to share with my family. The family menu is very extensive and has items that would be enjoyable by most people. I really like the newer paint scheme they use on the interior, they employ a black paint scheme with some appealing lights. This is one of many go to places that I enjoy patronizing when I'm in the area.

Maria W.

Yelp
Food is affordable and all dishes are delicious! People work there is very nice and professional.

Yelp
D&A & us go back decades when they had their 1st spot on Broadway nr. Stockton St. The food was fast, good & low priced. The place would be packed @ both spots. Seems not it's a new owner & ambiance have changed. We had a table of 8 & ordered the set menu w/6-8 items. The food was mediocre & portions lessen b/c all plates were cleaned off. It wasn't bad but it wouldn't be the 1st place I would think of going out to eat at. It's no longer packed like it used to & priced similar to other places nearby. I would return if some changes are made. Somehow the food was better when it was a dump openning past 2am.

Yelp
They have a big selection of sauté or stir fried dishes that I have eaten as a kid. They offer a friendly and well lit dining environment. My favorite from here is the salted fish and chicken fried rice. So good.

Yelp
I came here on a Friday night with my husband to grab a red bean ice but we decided to order a few dishes to try. The ambiance is blue inside and there were booths and tables for you to choose from. The man at the counter was friendly and quick to serve us while his wife was too busy chatting with customers to even take orders or clean tables for incoming guests. We ordered a dry beef chow fun, curry beef stew with rice and a red bean drink. The beef chow fun was really oily so we ate a little bit only. The curry bean was ok but my husband didn't care for the curry flavor since it seemed like a package mix. The star of the show was the red bean drink. It was not sweet and the shaved ice was perfect. We paid at the counter and the wife just kept blabbing to customers as she took our payment. Kinda off putting

Yelp
Aside from just a few dishes we didn't like due to our personal taste, almost everything was pretty delicious and very affordable. We tried 85% of their menu at this point. Since this is more of a HK Cafe, I definitely prefer the more traditional HK / Cantonese fares at this restaurant. The choose your own 3 items, rice and soup continues to be superb value. Lately we have been venturing towards the more Western-style part of their menu, particularly the Portuguese-style baked rice/spaghetti type dishes. Service was very nice as well. The owner is very gracious. Sometimes we do have to flag the staff down for things, but mostly because they are short-staffed.

Yelp
I am a fan!!! In SF where every other restaurant has turned into an upscale, more modern version of what it should have been, it is so rare to find an actual comfort food restaurant. Ambiance is extremely casual- wooden decor, booths and tables. The waitstaff are some of the nicest people I've met. Service is quick and the food just hits the spot. There are deals for order 3 or 4 dishes off one side of the menu. And it all comes with soup and enough rice to feed a family of 10. Had a wonderful experience, will definitely be back again.

Yelp
* Tasty $11.95 lunch special entree w/tea, milk tea, and soup of the day *Extra $1 charge to use card unless you meet a minimum charge requirement *Hit or miss when it comes to having a clean table to eat at if you dine-in Service & food comes fast and fresh! I've eaten here twice so far and gotten take out once. I've been enjoying the Hong Kong food here. Each day there is a $11.95 lunch special with soup of the day with tea and even a milk tea. Its a bit much for me so I ask for the milk tea in a to go cup. It's affordable and tastes great. There is a separate menu for the lunch specials. Each day of the week there is a specific dish they serve so it's not much of a choice if you want the lunch special but I don't mind the lack of choice for the price. To be honest, it's not the cleanest restaurant though. Some tables are not wiped down immediately. The first time I came, my table was clean. The second time it was not even wiped down so I avoided certain parts of the table during the meal. The third time I came for takeout and noticed the tables were still unclean. Either way, their lunch specials are great.

Yelp
The food isn't even mediocre. The place is filthy. I poured a bit of soy sauce onto my food and out with the sauce came several dead bugs. I was horrified.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! Has one of the best deals for Chinese food. I love their braised tofu, Mongolian beef, and eggplant. I have to commend the chefs because the food always tastes great and comes out fast. The owner is also nice and accommodating. She even personally delivered to my work one time (albeit with a surcharge). I make a big order from here every month and am happy to support them!

Yelp
I have been coming here for years. The food is always solid and the service is pretty good. I like going with friends so we can try a bunch of different dishes.

Yelp
First time. Service was efficient. Ambiance is totally casual. Food was good with lots of options on the menu. Prices are on par with many Chinese restaurants these days. Portion sizes filled the take out container. Porridge was a hit for me.

Ellen L.

Yelp
Haven't been here in ages and was in the neighborhood for a quick lunch. To our surprised, the whole restaurant was painted in a dark hue with dimmed lights. The impression is probably geared for the night life. Our noodles had flavor. Service is lacking, had to go up to the counter 2x to refill our cups for tea and to get the take out boxes for our leftovers. If there is a next time, it will be to order to go only.

Yelp
I came back to D&A after 20years and was pleasantly greeted by the owner Candy. The food was good quality, great price; service prompt and friendly. I took my older sister there for dinner. It was her first time at D&A Café and she loved it. We were there for an early dinner, and because there weren't too many customers dining then, the noise level was good as we could chat normally.
google avatar

Yelp
This place serves authentic Chinese food. The food is good. My cousins from Hong Kong came and they liked it; so that says something! This is a typical Chinese restaurant so don't expect pristine dining; and customer service "ok". While we were dining, the workers pushed the trash bins right by our table to the front sidewalk. Not the best hygienic thing to do, but like I said typical real Chinese place. So if you're offended on things like that, probably not your place. This place is great for good authentic Chinese food and reasonable. Several other restaurants, bars, and dessert places around the area as well.
google avatar

Michele T.

Yelp
Service wasn't the greatest but the food was solid. We were seated right away but took a while for someone to take our order. Food arrived quickly once order placed. Four items for $40 special - comes with rice and soup. We ordered: 1) Salt and pepper chicken wings - arrived hot. Hubs likes to take the peppers and place on top of his rice. 2) Garlic snow pea leaf - good veggies but be careful of bugs that may not have been completely washed out. 3) Roast duck ($3 extra) - tasty and not overly fatty pieces. 4) Szechuan eggplant - probably my fave dish of all we ordered. 5) Tomato beef chow mien - kiddos like their noodles. Choice of crispy or regular- crispy is their choice and they enjoyed it. We come here when wanting Chinese and in the area. Took stars away due to the service and having found a bug in our dish.

Justin Y.

Yelp
This place can only be best described as an underrated, hidden gem--I'd definitely recommend this spot to anyone looking for authentic Hong Kong/Cantonese cuisine with great ambiance & atmosphere. The clientele is hugely Chinese/Asian, but is the perfect spot for those who love dining family style while having great conversation & sharing laughter over fresh, hot food.

Yelp
This place use to be good. After they remodeled the restaurant, this place went downhill a lot. Their Hainan Chicken Rice lacks flavor and same with the Wonton Noodle Soup. Service was ok, could use some improvement.
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Good Hong Kong style foods. Prices are reasonable but definitely went up over the past several years. They remodeled the restaurant since last came by. Service is quick and large portion. The baked pork chop over rice was great but the sauce could be a thicker. The beef chow fun could use more flavor. But the flounder fish was very tasty and crispy. The beef stew with bean curd was large and flavorful. The salt pepper chicken was crispy and flavorful. Will be back to order more food. Wish they have a location in the peninsula with the same pricing

J s.

Yelp
I haven't been here in many many years but it's good it's still around. What I miss are the multiple menus and a large variety of items. I didn't see any happy hour menu or specials posted around so I don't know if they got rid of them or not. I ordered a baked rice item and macaroni soap for my kid and although the portions were a lot for the macaroni, my baked rice was average for the price. There is another HK cafe restaurant a couple streets away but from my experience with their sister location in Newark, CA, I would totally avoid them. Don't expect much service or crowds as it's run by a thin staff but the Ambiance is not bad for a Chinese restaurant. I just wish they would remodel the bathrooms.

G F.

Yelp
I've been coming here for decades. The food is excellent , large portion, the price is fair. Most of these places are mom and pop restaurants operating on a shoe string. You are getting a good value, but don't expect great services. So get off your high horse.
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
Props to the staff at D &A Cafe for being open on Thanksgiving until 9pm. Their take-out is usually ready in 15 minutes which is the case today. I had their 3 items for $36. Dishes like snow pea shoots and walnut shrimps are +$2 each. The portions for the salt and pepper spareribs and snow pea shoots were generous. The ginger lobster $27 and walnut prawns portions were small. They were only 1/2 containers worth. Total was $74 with tax. It came with free rice and soup. My family was happy with the food.
google avatar

Helen L.

Yelp
Service is awesome here. Well, for us any way since we can't make up our minds what to order, we were in no hurry. One table didn't get any serving plates, chopsticks, or napkins. They have the best chinese complimentary soups with the 3 or 4 dish orders. Today was water lily soup with lots of gunger. It's an acquired taste. I grew up with this stuff, so it reminds me of mom's home cooking. We finally decided on salted fish tofu, bittermelon fish, peking spareribs (literally sliced spare ribs with sweet vinegary gravy), ginger green onions chicken. Comes with rice, soup, and tea. What more do you really want? You have leftovers for days. Their to- go is very brisk. All pictures are purple because of lighting inside. Sit towards the back away from the draft of door opening and closing. They have Hong Kong tea. This place is so cheap that you can eat a lot.

Gwendolyn G.

Yelp
The people who work here especially the lady with the glasses need to learn how to speak with the Black people that patronize their business training is definitely needed at this place or we need to stop patronizing their business because I think they think it's okay to speak to us any kind of way and still patronize them. We need to speak out regarding to what's going on at this business stop going hit them in their pockets and maybe they will get the message and start treating us better

Gmy M.

Yelp
Once I tried it the first time. I stick to it Authentic Hong Kong cafe food and even better

Yelp
Probably one of the few restaurants that have specials where you order 3 or 4 plates for a set price unless otherwise noted. Good deal for these days when everything has gone up in price! We ordered Hainanese chicken, pea sprouts with garlic, and hot peppered beef ribs. We have yet to have a bad meal here. And have been here at least a half dozen times if not more. Always leftovers to bring home. Rice is free, plentiful and comes in a large covered pot like the old days! I wish I lived closer to Richmond district, but I guess it's something to look forward to when I'm in the area and craving Chinese food! We'll be back!

Yelp
This cafe has been around for a long time and is a family owned business. We come to get their set menu items which are such a great deal. 4 items for about over forty bucks plus including soup and generous rice serving. They also have a set menu for three items for a little over 33 bucks, such a steal! There is a large menu to choose from. We particularly like the peking spareribs and they are also known for their salt and pepper spareribs. Their son who helps out is very friendly and nice. They also have happy hour specials which my mom and I used to frequent when she was mobile. We would enjoy some small appetizers together like their fried tofu and congee as an afternoon snack. They do both dine in and take out and the menu supposed to right on their window. Great value and price, and delicious too!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Extensive menu but mediocre meals. Nicely remodeled seating area offers outdoor dining. I ordered the 3items family meal which is super cost efficient. Comes with a big container of rice, soup and your choice for 3 items on their extensive menu. I ordered over the phone and choose: salt and pepper chicken wings - counted 10pcs, a little dry and could taste that it was in the freezer for a while Mongolian beef - onions, peppers and sauce was tasty but beef was tough and bland Half a duck (+$2) extra - a little dry and was only item that took more than 10minutes to be ready. I would like to try their fried fish, noodles and bakes rice/spaghetti dishes though and hope it's good!

Good iced hong kong milk tea, will try food next time when I am in the inner Richmond, SF.

Yelp
You can't get more classic San Francisco than the food and atmosphere being offered at D & A Cafe. Located on Clement Street in the city's Inner Richmond district, D & A Cafe has been a part of the DNA of the neighborhood for decades now. D & A Cafe is what is considered a Hong Kong style cafe one that specializes in Cantonese Chinese comfort food with a sprinkling of American sensibilities, in addition to traditional coffee and tea beverages being served alongside their family-style dishes. Our party of seven decided to enjoy a dinner in the city and one member of our party suggested we dine here as they had been here before and really liked the overall modern interpretation of classic Chinese cuisine as well as the better value for the overall prices on their menu. Living in the eastern side of the Bay Area, getting to this section of the city takes quite the time to get to even via car, especially on a weekend evening. Worse yet, the Inner Richmond neighborhood, Clement Street in particular, is notoriously bad for finding any type of reasonable parking space, as the area is bustling with activity with restaurants, stores, cafes, and pubs dotting every single block. After dropping my party off so they could grab our table, I decided to drive around a couple blocks and search for a space. Luckily after driving around for about ten minutes, I managed to find a neighborhood spot south of Geary Boulevard and simply hoofed it over in no fewer than five very long blocks to meet my party who was already deciding on what they wanted to eat. The things one does for affordable Chinese food! The interesting thing is that there are three menus at D & A Cafe, one was their Happy Hour menu, which is offered daily from 3 to 6 p.m., one was their a la carte menu, one meal set menu where you can order three or four entrées for a set price and receive soup and rice to go alongside your meal. It is here where we decided to order most of our dishes, we opted to go with their Salt & Pepper Smelt, Combination Tofu Clay Pot, Beef Stew with Bean Curd Stick, Sweet & Sour Spareribs, Szechuan String Beans with Pork, Mongolian Beef, and their Pork Stomach with Ginger and Onion. Seven protein-filled dishes we felt would best represent the cuisine they cook at D & A Cafe. We were first presented with a broth soup with a beef base and then generous cups of warm tea that were easily refillable. Then our meal entrées were delivered to our table with the highlights being their Sweet and Sour Spareribs, Mongolian Beef, and Szechuan String Beans with Pork. I did feel that their Spareribs and the Clay Pot meals were presented with a wee bit too much sauce, although how much sauce is too much really, as everything pairs well with their Steamed Rice. All told, our total bill was less than eighty dollars, which was eased since we ordered seven dishes under their combination entrée set meal plan, which made for giving value to your meal new meaning. Would we come back to D & A Cafe? Consider that a few weeks later we happened to be in the area and needed food for dinner that night and opted to order the aforementioned Sweet and Sour Spareribs, Mongolian Beef and Szechuan String Beans with Pork as takeout orders, then the answer is a resounding yes! We actually can't wait to return to try dishes off of their Happy Hour menu, as they had everything ranging from Porridge to Noodle Soup to Chow Mein and Fried Rice, all served at below 9 dollars each, which is very reasonably priced. Is it the heartiest Chinese food out there or are their dishes presented with delicate flair that could be found at other Chinese restaurants, many of which are located on nearby Geary Boulevard? That's up for debate, but what is not debatable is that D & A Cafe should be celebrated for its modern interpretation of classic Cantonese dishes and their insistence on only using quality fresh ingredients found locally here in Northern California. That and the fact they serve a decent cup of tea and coffee alongside their traditional dishes is reason to celebrate the lasting longevity of D & A Cafe, in the one of the most locally supported neighborhoods of San Francisco, the Inner Sunset. May their reign of the Hong Kong Cafe dining scene in this area continue for decades to come!

Yelp
Went with their 3 entree + rice + soup special and found everything to be plentiful and made very well. Normally we like coming to this D&A because they allow subbing the soup for a second giant bucket of rice but with Covid driving the price of things like rice up, that's no longer an option - boo! It's okay though! I'd rather they stay in business! My grandmother recently heard that D&A changed owners. I can't verify if that's actually true, but I can say that our last few to-go lunch and dinners here have been steadily getting better and better. Entrees have been generous and seemingly made with ever better quality ingredients. For example, our ribs today weren't just crispy pieces of batter...they actually had good meat on the bones and we're fried well. It's wasn't too oily or salty but did carry enough oomph to entice those taste buds. The same can be said about my favorite braised cod and tofu. It was very generous on both ingredients where we've definitely had some skimpy plates in the past. This combo comes to about $35 all said and done which is a deal tbh. Our family of 4 can never finish it all so that's a full meal and then some for less than $10 a head, what more could you want? I do very much miss their happy hour menu though...

Chris W.

Yelp
Food was very mid imo. If you're looking for value then it might be your cup of tea. Got a number 1. Deep fried flounder, 4. Salt and pepper smelt, 15. Salt and pepper wings, and egg omelette with shrimp. Shrimp and egg omelette was pretty standard. The other 3 dishes were all pretty salty. Maybe I'm just salty...but I could really taste the salt in these dishes. Old people seem to like this place. Service is alright. Tbh room felt like it used to be a night club based on the room color and lights. Overall wouldn't come back unless I'm eating with grandparents or smth.

Yelp
Had lunch here a few times. it was a very good experience! Food was always good... I went here for dinner last week and tried that 3 item deal they had! There was only 3 of us... man, that order could feed at least 5 people! Very affordable, sevice was super nice and fast! Food was way worth the price and delicious! I would definitely recommend it, and I would be back!

Yelp
Definitely good-sized portions! It's good solid food and you will leave with a full stomach. We ordered the beef stew curry chow mein and the chicken cutlet. The cutlet was nice and crunchy and not oily. The chicken was a chicken thigh so it was nice and moist. The curry chow mein came with a good amount of beef. The curry flavor was deep and mild. If I were in the area again, I would come again but I would not go out of my way to return.

Yelp
These snacks cost $10 each. Kinda pricey. Service was nil. Took forever to get tea. No menus. Had to ask for a long wait. No utensils. Had to get my own. Not planning a return visit.

Yelp
Thank you for letting me charge my cell phone yesterday night! 5th Avenue was out of electricity so my dad and I walked here for dinner. It was scary how even the traffic lights didn't work. I'm thankful D&A Cafe wasn't affected and not too crowded. They let us sit here for a long time to charge my phone. I wish their baked chicken rice came with some vegetables for a healthier dinner, but it was still yummy. They also gave us free hot tea but I requested hot water instead since I didn't want to drink caffeine at night.

Yelp
Low prices and good service but place is dirty. Sticky floors and condiment containers. Place is dark to hide the dirt. Food is average at best. Okay if u have a strong stomach and not afraid.

Yelp
I think this place has been around forever and while it's not maybe a destination worthy spot, if you're in the mood for standard canto cafe fare, they are just fine at it. Recently had the fish porridge and singapore noodles and both scratched their respective itches. Have I had better? Yes. But I've also had much worse and I appreciate their staying power.

Yelp
dependable and reliable 文記 :') i grew up eating d&a and i've often came with family so i never really know what i'm eating but it's always a solid canto restaurant for good, classic canto food. they're open for indoor dining !!! they remodeled the place to be more modern and cool with neon lights and black interior which i love. i'll attach photos next time since i only have videos but it's a totally 180 from its older interior since their older interior was really old and unhygienic. the order to food being ready time was very fast as i ordered in person, i would say 10 minutes? and the food is obviously delicious. reasonable priced which is always fantastic. i order chicken chow fun and fried bananas, can never go wrong with those two as safe options. another dish i'd recommend from d&a is seafood tofu clay pot with XO sauce. the XO sauce isn't overwhelming AND the tofu and fish are MMMM yes. i love d&a and is always a to-go place whenever i want canto food.

Yelp
Tasteless, greasy, and messy "food". Really gross. Don't waste your time or your money. Orange chicken was just a goop of sticky sauce and batter - zero chicken. Chow Mein was a flavorless and greasy - yuk. When we complained, we were told it be better next time! No offer of a refund. NEVER AGAIN! Yuk!

Yelp
Kinda typical American Chinese food place as in the portions are a little too large & the you can feel the US industrial farming that produced the ingredients... big and bland. No fault of the place, just how normal food is in the US, big, frozen and free of taste. My 豆腐火腩飯 was $11.50 so $13. Not bad in this day and age. And I'm glad they knew what it was. It's a common enough dish in Hong Kong that I order it without seeing if it's on the menu. Pretty comfortable in the booths if you can get one. This will be my non 燒味 & non 茶餐廳 place in the Inner Richmond. Another words, when I want American Chinese food.

Yelp
Yesterday 9/13/2023: After carefully reviewing Chinese food spots in this area. My family, and I decided to give this place a try! I called and place an order for pick up. I must say the food was actually quite good. We ordered the Bean sprouts chow mein, Broccoli beef over rice, Mongolian beef over rice, and Mixed vegetables over rice. Flavor was pretty tasty. The problem is that my for the most part, I, and some of my family members got tummy sick after wards, as well as our throats starting to hurt! Not to mention we were definitely thrown off when we found a small bug on my broccoli beef. Also, as I was being rung up, the workers started speaking Chinese, and I understand Chinese, amongst other languages, as I am an educator, and I didn't at all appreciate them saying, and I quote, "They look wealthy, charge them full price, but, let them know that we gave them the happy hour special." Right! I paid $50.00. Comments like this are completely unnecessary, and bad for business. So, I mean, maybe, if the food wouldn't have gotten us sick then maybe this place would've been legit, as it had some potential! Now, I'm dreading coming back here at all! Check this place out on your own risk! I don't really recommend.

Yelp
It was undoubtedly a 2-star experience, but I'm giving an extra one because it was Labor Day and maybe just a bad moment for D & A. The staff barely noticed our existence until we flagged them to sit outside, then after some time, a waitress came over who spoke no English. I told my friend that, having lived in China three years, I was actually encouraged by this because it meant the food might be more authentic and not Westernized Chinese food. Another woman quickly followed and apologized because the waitress was new, and then clarified to us what we had ordered... no problem. ... and the food was fine. Egg rolls came that clearly looked like stock food Chinese places carry, with little sweet sauce packets. My chicken likewise looked frozen and the corn under it definitely was. My friend's salmon took so long that he got up after a solid 15+ minutes after my food had arrived to go check on it. I got up again to pay because I knew a waitress wouldn't be coming back. It was my first time leaving 15% tip in the _longest_ time but there wasn't much good to say here. Our dishes were all pretty edible, and I liked the tea. I'll give them another chance sometime, but this was really discouraging.

Yelp
I think of this as an older style Chinese restaurant, the type that is going extinct and that I'm really sad about!. I love coming here and ordering 3-4 dishes and eating my fill and bringing home the leftovers. Not every dish is amazing since the menu is extensive, but there are a lot of good ones. If you're willing to go a few times you can find your favorites. I like the bitter melon egg stir fry. I also love the daily soup (another thing an older style Cantonese restaurant does that is going out of style now). Don't expect good service but it's totally serviceable. I'd rather come here any day than any number of trendy minimalist font restaurants which serve only 5 things and gets a bunch of good PR.
