‘I Thought I Was All Done With That’: COVID Surge Forces Restaurants to Shut Down Temporarily | Eater Chicago

"A small independent bookstore housed within the container retail site that contributes to the market’s sense of hospitality and community during the operating season, offering a quieter complement to the surrounding food vendors." - Ashok Selvam

This is a great black owned bookstore or book boutique. They hold events and have a great selection of books written by black authors. It is very clean and the owners are mother and daughter. They sell tshirts, candles, tote bags in addition to books.

The owner was very nice very informative. I got this book because it called my name and I actually thought about the movie before I even ran into the book and I did not know Toni Morrison wrote this book. She is an incredible author. I’m so looking forward to diving into this book.

Love this Bookstore! What a Local Gem. Fabulous selection of books on many very relevant subjects. Books seem more reasonably priced than other places, and the Staff were welcoming and helpful in pointing out where to find things and making good suggestions. Plus, there was an event going on in which happy children and their parents were enjoying "Book & Brunch", a regular event hosted at the shop - where children enjoy stories, good food and even take home a book. Such a creative idea! So many genuine smiles were in the shop this morning. What a wonderful vibe has been created here. Will be back!

I’ve visited this bookstore several times with different book clubs and have always had a great experience. I really love their selection of events, and Courtney, the co-owner, is absolutely lovely. The space feels welcoming and thoughtfully curated. I would definitely recommend this store, and if you’re an author, it’s a wonderful place to host a book event as well.

I had such a wonderful visit to Da Book Joint (which also includes Pen & Paper) while spending a few days in Chicago. This Black-owned, mother–daughter-owned bookstore was on my must-see list, and it did not disappoint. The space is warm, cozy, and beautifully designed, with plenty of seating areas to relax and enjoy a book. They carry an excellent selection of titles along with unique items like totes, bookmarks, candles, and body products. I was especially happy to find an early copy of Tiffany D. Jackson’s The Scammer, along with a magnetic bookmark and a fun tote. Story, who greeted me, was incredibly kind and welcoming, making the whole experience even better. She gave me space to browse without feeling rushed, and the customer service truly stood out. Da Book Joint radiates positive energy and community vibes. I highly recommend it to anyone in Chicago or visiting the city. I’ll definitely return on my next trip.

Beautiful bookstore and gift shop boutique. It's truly a warm and inviting space. I'd say it's almost begging for a cafe, but I hate coffee, and you're perfect as you are now. Came with my local sister to peruse their small but well curated selection of African American centric books. Similar to Third Eye in Portland, this place is dangerous for me. It's all new books which is her preference, but my addiction requires me buying mainly used so that I can keep paying my bills every month. I managed to keep myself to only two books(and that was a struggle), but I added several more titles to my extensive list for next time. They also sell several items from local artists, designers and crafts persons. It was a pleasure conversing with the owners about books and the state of our country. I'll definitely make a stop on my next extended trip to Chicago with a bigger spending budget. Support black owned businesses!

This place is so warm and inviting with an artistic vibe. We went on a Sunday afternoon and were instantly greeted with amazing service from one of the owners as soon as we walked in. They have an array of books (all the genres) with gifts sprinkled in between. There’s lots of space to grab a book and chill and the playlist was perfect as well. I honestly did not want to leave. It’s really the perfect spot to get some work done or just simply catch up on a few chapters. Stop in and support this beautiful woman owned space!

Google
I had such a great experience with Da Book Joint! I tried their subscription box, Da Book Box, and loved it. Each book selection fit right within the genres and themes I usually love but are titles that I might not have found on my own. Its clear the owners put real thought and care into what they send out. Highly recommend for any book lover looking to expand their personal library!

Yelp
Da Book Joint has been a southeast side staple for 18 years. You can find NY Times Best Sellers and Local Authors in one place. If you cannot find what you're looking for on the shelves--I am pretty sure the owners Courtney or Verlean will find it for you. They are able to tell you the best options for your needs. Children, young adults, and adult books fiction and non fiction for every reader! This is a store born and raised in Chicago and they give back to the city with so many great events for children, youth, and adults. Books are reasonably priced comparable to any other store you would shop for books! If you cannot get IN to get books you can always find options online as well! Also. They have dope apparel too! For men and women, boys and girls!! Da Book Joint has all your literary needs covered!

Yelp
Places like this makes me glad I go for a walk in the neighborhood. I almost never come this way unless I'm in the car so I definitely went by this place many of times but never noticed it was there until my walk. So I have to stop by because it's just drew me in. I love books so it's nice to know that it's a bookstore nearby that I can just walk to. The sells all black own books. I'm definitely looking to up my library at home so I will be coming back to buy books. Also they share size with another business that sells like Shea butters and things and I tried one of the Shea butter samples and it smelled really good, so I'll definitely be buying that as well. The staff was super friendly. It was super chill in there. They told me that they open back in December so they haven't been open long but I hope they stay open for a very long time and I will definitely be coming back.

Yelp
I love going to Da Book Joint. I love going to the store even when it was located on 51st. My goal is to purchase books from local bookstores instead of Amazon. This location is easy to spot right on the corner of 69th and Stony. Parking is free. Lately I have been loving the events. Spifster just had her first ever art reception at this location! She has a artist talk coming up for those who may be interested. I love the variety in events. There is a monthly adult book club meeting. The owner is even looking into starting a Kids book club. I will definitely be back!

Yelp
So this is my first time actually being able to pop into the store front. I purchased from them at different pop-up events where they are vendors. I came with my friend who purchased a shirt from them at the black women's expo but shortly after she noticed that it was damaged, so I rode with her to the store where they were able to rectify the situation. they didn't have it in stock but they actually made her new shirt. it took longer than the projected timeline, so when we came back they also provided her with a special tote from the store. Great customer service I must say! While in the store, I purchased two books one which is a mystery book ( it's wrapped and they have clues written about the book.) which I think is a cool concept. They also have proceeding and the book books are priced pretty decently as well as it has items on sale. The store has something for all ages and they also host various events here too. I will be back.

Yelp
Another beautiful, black/woman owned bookstore store in the city of Chicago. This place is beautiful and refreshing as soon as you walk in the door! The mother-daughter duo were very nice and welcoming! The artwork on the wall were beautiful pops of color. The books and merchandise are smartly displayed throughout the store. There's music playing, a water station, comfortable seating spaces, even a collection of books for the taking. Even the bathroom is beautiful and clean. I purchased a sweatshirt that I cannot wait to wear. I was grateful that the price was reasonableand I didn't pay $60 for a sweatshirt, which I've seen in other places. I will definitely be back for my next book haul and maybe to just sit and read!

Yelp
This place makes my heart smile. Black owned. Clean. Kind and courteous help immediately upon entry. Live music. Beautiful selection. Wonderful decor. Clean bathroom that needs liquid soap. We bought some kids books as a birthday gift. I bought a T-shirt because READING IS A SOCIAL MOVEMENT. I highly recommend you stop in and support this new business. Let's make them a place to visit on the south side of Chicago. Who's with me??? ‍

Yelp
Proud of the store, but why "Da" instead of "The"?... It's actually kind of offensive. Does it have to do with your target audience or the location?
