"Let’s be honest: few theme parks can pull off barbecue in any self-respecting fashion. But, here, Dolly does it again, with piled-high pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, and bread for sopping up all the barbecue sauce. You can feel like the queen herself with one of those giant smoked turkey legs to rival that of any renaissance fair. And, if the kiddos aren’t feeling it, there’s chicken tenders and fries." - Melissa Corbin

Google
Great food love the tri tip. Great and quick service. Would definitely recommend!

Abraham Gonzalez

Google
I ordered a tri-tip sandwich . Portions are big and not bad for bbq in California. 7/10.

Tania Ledesma Chavez

Google
Tried 3 different types of sandwiches and the side of mac salad. The link sandwich, the pulled pork sandwich and the brisket sandwich. The brisket sandwich was the best for me because I liked the thick cut of the meat. The bbq sauce was tangy and sweet and the mac salad was delicious. The links were flavorful and the pulled pork was not dry. The bread was crispy but came apart (not like those tough breads).

Raul

Google
I ordered the tri tip bowl but little did I know I was going to be paying $9 for a bowl of rice and beans with a thin layer of tri tip on top!

David Longres

Google
My wife and I were greeted with a warm smile by Abraham and proceeded to have a nice quick lunch. Simple and delicious tri tip sandwich thanks Abraham

Alan Spurling

Google
It's a little pricey but well worth it! That's a tri-tip bowl in the photo, amazing for a post workout meal! Be advised, the mild sauce is hot and the hot sauce is HOT! 😅

Manny Gomez

Google
Off the chain food. Small location but comfy and lovely view. Tri trip was 5 stars n spicey is not to hot just right

Julian Woods

Google
Easily the worst bbq place in town. Way over priced for terrible service, the potato salad and Mac salad are from Costco. For $30 you could find another place not to far away for less and way better food.

Paul M.

Yelp
Cool old place near Saticoy and the baseball fields and golf course. Easy parking and a convenience store next door to it. Food was good! Smoky flavor and tasty sauce. Not so hot that you are wondering if it'll light your mouth up but just right. Toast was bigger than most local bbq places and serving size of Tri Tip was way bigger.

Anita C.

Yelp
Tried this tonight and it was a little pricey. I got the 3 meat plate. The hot link was flavorful and the tri tip was juicy. The bbq sauce was a bit too sweet for me but not bad and the beans were a little under seasoned. The pork ribs were very dry and chewy.

Leticia D.

Yelp
The beans are not sweet like they used to be. The meat is not as tasty. Service is average. I prefer a different barbecue restaurant.

Elizabeth A.

Yelp
I was so excited to try this BBQ place as I've been craving some tri-tip. My daughter and I got the tri tip dinner plate today and we're extremely disappointed. The tri-tip had no flavor, the mild sauce was the runniest sauce I've ever seen and also had no flavor. Both of our bread was burnt. The chili beans were just pinto beans in what looked like colored water and again, had no flavor. We both took only one bite of that before saying forget it. The only items that had flavor and deserve some sort of mention were the potato salad and the coleslaw. We won't be back. Also, no issues with the staff as the gentleman that helped me was very friendly. Just so disappointed that the food didn't match the service.

Patricia S.

Yelp
We ordered a chicken plate, chicken sandwich and tri tip plate. Everything was very tasty. Staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean.

Bob D.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious tri tip sandwich!! Small portion of coleslaw but the beans were excellent

Salena B.

Yelp
Chicken salad was so good the freshness Of the salad was great on a nice summer day! If you haven't eaten here you should they also have amazing tri tip and Mac salad!

Ran L.

Yelp
Don't know if it was because I went for dinner time but the tri tip I got was well done and then reheated with grill marks. Beef rib was dry. Kid was lounging in a booth then jumped up to take my order. Nobody eating there around 6ish. Try it out, see what you think! Honestly just look at the pics in here combined with the one and two star reviews and well, you get the idea.

Stacey P.

Yelp
First off, the kid who took our order was not friendly at all. I worked food service for 30 years. You want to make customers feel welcomed, not like you are bothering them. I ordered a rack of beef ribs. Once the order was ready, I was informed that they didn't have enough ribs for a full rack but gave me some tri- tip to make up for it. The 2 ribs that they did give me were mostly bones. What tiny bit of meat that was there was so dry it was like eating jerky. It was as if they were cooked the day before and reheated. They had no flavor. The tri-tip was mediocre. Very disappointing! Don't waste your money on this place!

Joey M.

Yelp
This is a decent BBQ but inflation and COVID has brought the over all experience down. No regular table service encouraged, that's plane to see just by walking in. The prices are also a bit on the high side. $20+ dollars for a two meat combo and small overdone salads and beans. Hopefully when normalcy comes comes back. So will the ambience and the pricing at this location. I've never been to the Oxnard location.

Claudio D.

Yelp
I asked the guy behind the counter how good their barbecue is and his answer was we make the same as any other barbecue and started naming them, yes crazy. They had lemonade advertised at $.99 and they were charging three dollars and I told them it was illegal to change pricing. He lost a $60 order due to pettiness.

Ashley T.

Yelp
The sauce is wonderful!!! I'll start with that. But the tri tip was dry and over cooked. We stopped by first thing in morning when you opened to make sure to get the best meat and I feel like we got what was left over from the day before. The dry over cooked meat has been a pretty regular thing. We keep going back for the sauce. Hopefully this will get fixed soon.

Alex O.

Yelp
I live down the street from this joint so I really wanted to believe the positive reviews but was left disappointed twice. My first trip, back in December, I got a pair of tri tip sandwiches to go. While the sides, pasta salad and baked beans, were fine, the sandwich itself left much to be desired. The meat was cold and leathery, the bread didn't taste fresh, and the sauce really isn't to my taste. I was expecting competition with Marshall's Bodacious BBQ but it didn't hold a candle. The second trip, just last week, I ordered pork ribs for takeout via Uber Eats. I picked the order up and got home, only to learn that it was instead tri tip (which looked just as overdone as I'd had before). I went back and let them know about the error and, without saying anything, they took the bag from me and I waited for five minutes. They handed me back my food with a sizeable serving of the ribs which, while much better than the tri tip, were still mediocre. Sadly I won't be back and have to recommend that you look for some of the other great BBQ spots in the area.

Keith J.

Yelp
I'll stick with Wood Ranch.. Tri Tip was dry n leather like. Beans were tasteless and cold. Bread was.. just bread.

Devin B.

Yelp
Mediocre bbq. Got a half pound of tri tip and a hot link for lunch. Perfect keto lunch if you ask me! The downside the hot link wasn't hot and was bland it wasn't a house made link which I would have preferred. The tri tip had almost zero smoke to match the zero flavor. It was sliced then the sliced were put on a hot top for a quick sear. Just bland it did the trick but when your not a person who put bbq sauce on the meats the flavor just isn't there with Da Hickory house. I will be back to see how the other items fair but i flavor I get tri tip again I'll be sure to bring some of my own salt and pepper and maybe some pepper plant seasoning.

John K.

Yelp
I was in Ventura on my way to Santa Maria. Came across Da Hickory House. Did know what to expect because of the location and it almost looked closed but the sign said open so I went in. To go only because of COVID. I ordered Tri tip and Pork rib combo. I asked for BBQ on the side. It came with A buttered French Bread sides of potato salad Mac salad and beans oh and of Course the meats. The BBQ Sauce was warm so my first Bit was-I put some TriTip onto this great French Bread and I dipped it into this amazing warm BBQ Sauce. It was Amazing . The ribs were also good but the Bead and the BBQSauce made this meal. I will be back

Anna G.

Yelp
Customer service is poor, not friendly. Food was dry and old. Bbq sauce is great which helps to hide the dryness. Don't recommend this place.

Oj E.

Yelp
Not so good today. RIBS were hard as a rock and overcooked. Tri tip was not as moist as last time we ate here. Takeout posed a problem because by the time we got home they had closed . We weren't able to return our purchase.we will not be returning.

Alejandra L.

Yelp
First time in this place. Take out food. We got nachos and a tri-tip sandwich. The nachos definitely are bad! It's more like movie theater nachos- jalapeños that looks like they grabbed in a spoon and dump it on top of the chips, like 15 tiny pieces of meat, a lot of chips and a plaster of cheese on top. Probably that's why they don't put any description of the nachos. The presentation of the sandwich it was not good. Two pieces of bread face open and the pieces of meat tossed in the middle of the box with a bbq side. I give two stars because the place was clean. Even though, it looks like is run by kids and no adults.

Gabby C.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I loved it! Very good flavors and the macaroni salad was the best! Will definitely be returning

Sienna G.

Yelp
Yes family owned. Seems like they dont really care about how they cook their food. Beans tasted canned. Bread stale. Macaroni salad was plain as hell. French fries were unseasoned and soggy... easiest side. Grill Marks on the tri tip. Easy to tell it was cooked in advanced probably in the morning. I was so disappointed. I went with two friends and had hopes for this place but definitely won't be coming back Also everything was served on paper plates and plastic to go containers. Plastic cutlery as well Try if you want but wouldn't recommend it

Isaac C.

Yelp
For locals, if you liked Buster's BBQ in Saticoy back in the day and now like Just BBQ in Ventura then you'll love Da Hickory House! Tasty smoked food with great sauce (mild or hot)!

Linda R.

Yelp
Ordered food here first time in a very long time. Two dinner plates, with extra sides. Salad is huge and good. My pork ribs were terrible, must have cooked all day. My husband said they tasted like saw dust. So disappointing.

Rachel W.

Yelp
I decided to try Da Hickory House after I'd heard from a friend how good the tri-tip sandwich was. Located off Telephone and Scandia and next door to the Keynote Bar & Lounge, the restaurant itself is was darkly lit, with TV's at the front and back of the establishment for sport enthusiasts, leather seated booths that appear to have seen better days and tables and chairs for bigger parties. I ordered the tri-tip sandwich which is served on a french bread roll, with a side of either Mild or Hot BBQ sauce, for people with a sensitive palate to heat, just be warned the mild has a kick as well, I know my Mother who is sensitive to everything including pepper, would have a four alarm fire going on in her mouth if she ate this... but for heat seekers, while it has a kick, you will probably want to head into the Hot territory. I also ordered the Potato salad to accompany the sandwich, they serve it much like their competitor Just BBQ in a small plastic cup. My total order without a drink, came to around $12. While the Tri-tip was good, I wouldn't say it was the best and I was left with a mediocre impression of my meal. Value wise, I could've ordered the same thing at a competitor, with a drink and paid around the same price or maybe a $1 more and got a larger serving of the side dish. Da Hickory house is located in a good area for business, from bar patrons right next door, to the surrounding neighborhood, and the Moose Hall. It wasn't a horrible meal, and the gentleman that helped me was very pleasant, but would I go back? I don't think I would.. you'll be the first to know if that changes.

Mauricio G.

Yelp
I ordered a tritip sandwich. The slices of tritip were tender and flavorful. The sauce tasted like it's made in house (delicious). The portions were great . I would have given this place 5 stars but the sandwich was not assembled. I got the box with the two slices of bread and the meat. But there was clearly no intent to make the Sandwich... I don't know if this was on purpose or not but besides that... will be visiting when I'm in the area again.

Gary W.

Yelp
Da Hickory House was a bit difficult to find since its tucked back away from the street, but you know you are in the right place when you see the BBQ smokers parked outside. The inside of the restaurant is small and pretty basic however the BBQ is pretty solid. Theres not a lot to eat in this part of town so it's nice to find some decent BBQ. They have all your basic meat options(beef ribs, pork ribs, chicken, tri tip, pulled pork, hotlinks) except for brisket and all your normal BBQ sides(coleslaw, baked beans, potato salad etc.) The spicy BBQ sauce is great!

Marylou Y.

Yelp
Every time we went there the staff seemed not to be ready to attend to us. When we were ready to order they never had yh

Jack C.

Yelp
It had been a long time since we ordered from them. We were very very disppointed. I ordered a half a rack of beef ribs and they only had 3 ribs left so they gave me a piece of tri tip to make up for it. Okay, but when I got home the 3 ribs were burnt badly and had to be a couple of weeks old. This was on a Saturday at 5:00 so you would sort of expect there to be plenty of ribs and pretty fresh. My wife said that the chicken was so dried out and old tasting she could not eat it. My daughters pulled pork was dried out an old and the only thing that helped make it edible was bbq sauce. For $50.00 I expecte a lot better quality. We will never go back again.....

Paul P.

Yelp
Five stars for a local family business with an extremely personable teen working in his family business- Oscar did great! Five stars for excellent meats. I would return over and over just for the Tri-tip, beef ribs and huge nachos! Five stars for the "homemade" barbecue sauces - delicious! I wish they served them on the table in squeeze bottles instead of in little containers. I hate to waste and just want to use the amount I need. This is a small business that does the BBQ meats wonderfully. They miss in several other areas and I hope they are attentive to feedback. Drink refills and greet were extremely slow and we had to ask each time. Condiments need to be improved and modernized. I expect stevia and raw sugar wherever I go. These are currently common staples and should not be seen as expensive alternatives. DiNe in BBQ requires a lot of cleanup- they miss this part. Thin little napkins and no wet wipes. Bathroom and dining area needs to be deep cleaned more often. True attention to detail.

Rich A.

Yelp
This place is da worst. I wouldn't eat here again if it was free. Good Tri Tip didn't balance for nasty chicken and ribs. No Mac and cheese nope not a bbq spot. Mexican families running in and out of kitchen adults kids no kitchen this is a hole in the wall. I left and bought a sandwich from liquor store in the front of this place and it was WAY BETTER THEN THIS PLACE. If you eat here you don't know bbq. Don't be fooled by the name this place isn't a southern owned bbq place it's a south of the border owned place.

Mike G.

Yelp
Been here many many times and the food is pretty good. The sauce makes the meal though as you can see re heat marks on the meat and side are below average. BIG PROBLEM is another price increase! Went in for a lunch yesterday and foe a tri tip sandwich and small side of beans was over 18 dollars! Probable the most overpriced lunch I've ever had. This is not a sit down gourmet meal, very simple take out lunch. 5 pieces of tri tip two pieces of bread and chili beans. 18 dollars without a drink. Unbelievable, that will def be my last visit. Kinda sad about It, but refuse to get bent over for simple very average food..

Shasta B.

Yelp
Honestly one of best bbq places my fiancé and i have ever been too. They don't take shortcuts in preparing their meats - our tri tip plate was to die for! Perfectly done and delicious sauce plated next to it. The meat is so good that it can stand alone though. Tip: if you go, order as much potato salad as humanly possible! Sweet, tangy.....i never knew potato salad could taste as good as Da Hickory House makes it. I don't even like potato salad that much, but DAMN that was some good stuff!! On top of that, the owners are the nicest people. You can tell how much they love cooking. when we told one of the staff members how much we loved this joint, the owner came out and talked to us about the place. Nicest guy you could meet! This is by far my favorite bbq place in So Cal. Will be returning to try the ribs

Shelly R.

Yelp
Not sure whose food we got, but most of it was delicious. Especially the tri tip which was moist, tender, and perfectly medium rare. The entire box of chicken we didn't order but received was a little dry but tasted good. Macaroni salad was insanely good, coleslaw was not great. Disappointed the person running the entire show was not wearing a mask at any time or any place. I get what a pain in the a$$ a mask must be to wear in a bbq place and the toll the pandemic has taken on restaurants, but made me wonder what other health rules he's ignoring. Also shows a lack of respect or concern for customers who are at high risk if they got COVID. Probably won't go back as I can get decent tri tip from many places around here that are in compliance with health guidelines.

Bear C.

Yelp
If you're a fan of Dickey's BBQ, or Famous Dave's.... DO NOT EAT HERE! Da Hickory House is for people that love REAL, delicious barbecue. Everything was cooked perfectly, bursting with flavor! The ribs, the tri-tip, the sides are even delicious. I'm not a macaroni salad kind of guy, but the mac salad here is tops. I highly recommend Da Hickory House, I will be frequenting this place for years to come. Cheers.

Patty H.

Yelp
Disappointing. This was my 4th time going and it was not the same as the others. The tri-tip meal only came with one slice of garlic bread. The tri-tip was not juicy at all ...it was chewy and did not have the taste of smoke. It felt like I was eating old tri-tip. The macaroni side tasted like refrigerator. I don't think I'll be going back there.

Jessica R.

Yelp
The service is what gets the two stars.. you can tell this family owned business is really trying and I appreciated that. I was disappointed with the food and I thought there could have been much more to it. The tri tip was fatty.. BBQ sauce didn't taste right, and the potato salad was very different. Hope as time goes on this place gets better!

Ilyssia Z.

Yelp
I was hungry and wanted pretty much a little of everything. I ordered the tri-tip nachos. I did mention that I wanted a little of everything, right? I ordered a hot link and asked the waiter if I could have the hot link chopped and mixed with the tri-tip pieces for my nachos. There was just one more thing that i needed to complete my meal, so I ordered a medium size potato salad. If you happen to get what I ordered, It's enough to feed for two. The one thing I have to say negative about my 1st time experience here was that I didn't see any bbq sauce anywhere. No sauce bottles on the tables or at the front. I didn't bother to ask as I was loving the nachos so much devouring them quickly.

Donna M.

Yelp
Only had the delicious tri-tip, could use more light inside this dark place and understanding the customer.

Saul R.

Yelp
Hands down! One of the best BBQ Tri Tip Sandwiches I ever had in my entire life! I love there Tri Tip and there BBQ Sauce. I also love there Beans, Macaroni Salad, and Garlic Bread. Everything is delicious.

Marco P.

Yelp
This spot is the bomb great service and the barbecue is smoked outside and it tastes phenomenal honestly the best place to eat on the East end of Ventura. Personally would recommend cause they the homiez for real!!!

Judy T.

Yelp
I ordered chicken and tri tips. Both were dried, overcooked and not tasty except for its sauce! Not recommending!

Selah S.

Yelp
Wanted to give this place a try, especially since it is family owned. Went with two friends for a night out for good BBQ. Disappointed to say that the food was not fresh, and honestly tasted like they microwaved it right before serving. The tri-tip had old grill marks, their beans looked and tasted canned, didn't even want to have a second bite. The ribs were very chewy and seemed old. We did not feel good while eating the food or thereafter. Try if you would like, but it's not worth the price or indigestion.

Jeff R.

Yelp
To be honest I was in Santa Paula at Best BBQ (another ex Just BBQ cook) but could not find a parking space. I drove back to Ventura to Da Hickory house and ordered a 1/2 rack of pork ribs. Fantastic. Let's be real. his kids do run in and out and he re-heats his meats, but the Tri-Tip is so tender it melts in your mouth. His ribs are always juicy and flavorful.

Cori L.

Yelp
Awesome BBQ. We tried the Tri tip and chicken plates. Our two sides were potato salad and macaroni salad. My husband and I both agreed the macaroni was excellent. Personally we were not huge fans of the potato salad. Next time we will try the cole slaw. The drive for us was well worth it. We dined in and they do give you generous portions. The plates come with beans and garlic bread both very yummy!!

Ruben V.

Yelp
Best BBq tri tip ribs this place has it all I would give more stars if offered customer service the best if your looking for the best bbq I recommend this place 100%

Anthony H.

Yelp
This place gets a 4.5 great prices not to heavy on the wallet no beer or any alcohol :( but very good and tasty ribs, beans and bread

Felicia D.

Yelp
We had tri tip sandwiches, chili and macaroni salad. Everything was really great I highly recommend it. I'm really picky about my macaroni salad this was super tasty and tastes homemade. Just a little FYI the half and half bbq sauce was pretty spicy to me but it had great flavor. All and all great experience.

Jose G.

Yelp
Place was good! They really take care of you. Location was a bit hidden (in a strip mall) but the place is cute. Ordered a pound of the tri-tip and the rack of baby back ribs. One word! Awesome! Meat was full of flavor and their sauce (dont know if it's made Inhouse or not) was done just right! Can't wait to go back soon.

A S.

Yelp
I placed a simple order around 6:15 p.m. for the tri tip dinner plate. In order to create room for other customers, I stood outside to wait for my order. They did not tell me when my order was ready and they did not place the bag on the normal service counter. Eventually, I went inside and found my order. When I got home, not only was it cold, but it was the wrong order. They gave me thin, dry, slices of chicken breast. I tried calling in to see if they could fix this, and despite being open for at least another 15 minutes, no one would answer the phone. In the end I was charged for a higher priced item and given poorly cooked, poorly handled food instead.

C P.

Yelp
Tri tip was good, Mac salad was tasty. Beans were spicy. Young, good customer service. Mellow place.
