Everywhere to Eat and Drink in the Adirondacks - Eater NY

"An extensive offering of American favorites like burgers, fish tacos, wings, and more (hello smoked bacon deviled eggs) fill out the ‘Dack Shack’s menu, but it’s nearly impossible to leave without ordering the popular Shack Mac ‘n Cheese. The menu description reads “creamy cheesy secret recipe,” but there are options to load it up with lobster, bacon, Korean-style pork belly, and buffalo chicken, among other options. The “Mountain of Fries” is the Shack’s take on poutine, and diners looking to grab some food for their vacation rental can visit Simply Gourmet next door for breakfast and lunch catering options like soups, salads, and sandwich platters." - Matthew Lardie

Great option for casual lunch or dinner. good tasting burgers and I'd go back for the hot dog topped with beans and crunchy fried onions. (They should offer an option for 2 - hot dog a bit on the small side). Comfortable and friendly staff. Fair prices.

Google
Great little restaurant / pub with tasty food and good service. Absolutely loved the wild mushroom faro dish I got. My son's chicken tenders and fries were much better than average. He also loved his s'mores shake. The servers were very nice and prompt. The place is clean and nicely decorated. They have craft beers on tap and plenty more to choose from bottled. Not much wine. Looks like they have at least one bar with full liquor. If I lived in the area, I'd frequent this place.

Best food of the entire trip! The dack dip was absolutely delicious but the fries made it even better. Our server Hilary was so helpful and we can’t wait to come back!

Google
This is a bit confusing when walking into… there are 2 eateries on the premises. One a deli and the other sit down lunch/dinner (Dack Shack). On the door with the hours is a sign that is posted with an arrow pointing to the restrooms- which is confusing until I realized that the arrow was part of their logo. The menu is a tiny font which doesn’t help with my old eyes. And it is a bit confusing when reading the burgers (add fries $4) should just be taken off bc the side of fries are $4 anyway. And field greens is the lettuce of choice which is just a bit confusing because and maybe it’s just me but I thought the burgers came on a field of greens. The atmosphere is very eclectic and could use some decluttering. The music was not my cup of tea. The food on the other hand was delicious. The black bean burger tasted homemade not frozen. They should give this as an vegan option (if it is- I didn’t ask). My husbands burger was very good and tasty the fries were not too greasy. The hot dog was good and served with tortilla chip not your regular potato chip which was a better choice but not noted on the menu. On a final note- women’s bathroom could use a bigger trashcan. And the men’s bathroom could use either a lock or a sign over where the lock should be.

Google
Nothing bad happened and the food was delicious. I don’t know the name of our server, but he was very friendly and attentive. 10/10 the burger was amazing.

Google
Would definitely recommend their burgers! The blackened salmon was also pretty good Their servers are amazing, friendly and sweet! They were kind enough to let us know what their specialty is. The patty was juicy and savory.

First time eating there tonight, I had the French Dip which I thought was amazing! The staff was great as well. 10/10 definitely recommend. We will be back.

Google
I wanted to leave after ordering. I looked up and saw the cooks eating, one touched his mouth, and then started platting food. The food was a huge disappointment, and over priced. My daughter said the burgers ar her school tasted better. You have to pay an additional $4 to get French fries, which were super greasy. I got the tacos. They were ok, but not worth $16, and then an additional $4 for very bland rice with a few black beans tossed in. The whole dish should have been $16. My husband also got a burger, and his stomach was very upset after. The wait staff were all eating and was on her cellphone. We certainly won't be back.

Yelp
Excellent food and atmosphere. In fact we ate here twice on our short visit to LP. The staff is very friendly. Will return when in the area again.

Yelp
We stopped here on our way home for lunch. The location was perfect because it was right before the Main Street of Lake Placid so it wasn't very busy. Plenty of parking. It's connected to a small shop which was super cute to go and poke around in. They have a walk up window for food and beverages. You can choose to eat outside or inside. We chose to eat inside and the service was very friendly and they were very quick. They are part of a work exchange so English is their second language, but they spoke very well. We ordered three entrées and one drink. The drink was very strong, so definitely worth the money. Our food was delicious. The only minor thing was the Mac and cheese was lukewarm. We could've asked for it heated again but we were so hungry we didn't care. We would definitely come back here again.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from the Dack Shack via their online system. The food was ready when promised and the pickup was very easy. That being said, the food was average at best. The fries and onion rings were super soggy and the chicken fingers were bland. The worst part was the milkshakes which were insanely expensive and little more than tepid milk with some stuff mixed in. They were so thin that even after an hour plus in the freezer they still resembled chocolate milk.

Jane S.

Yelp
Hamburger was really poor. Waitress friendly but very busy. Mac and cheese dish was good.

Yelp
This is one of the best restaurants in the North Country. The menu provides plenty of interesting options. The quality of the food is quite good: fish tacos. Pad Thai, veggie burger, to name some of my favorites. The price point is really good, a few bucks cheaper than the restaurants on Main Street. Best of all is the service. Really friendly and informal.

Yelp
Two stars for the convenience of the location. Such a dissatisfying experience - from my waitresses disposition to the mealy falafel. I had higher hopes for this place. Not much to say but it was remarkable how the absence of any shred of investment in my servers demeanor can mar a diners experience. The place is fine but the food I chose was awful. Greasy pita, undercooked falafel. I ate a few fries (very good) and the tomatoes and pickled cucumbers. As for the totality of my experience it was turned sour by the young waitress who showed, multiple times during my meal, that she was not interested in my experience at that establishment. Full disclosure: I was a waiter for well over a decade and understand the biz. I know how burnt out or depressing this job can be at times, so when I experience a server so obviously disinterested in my dining experience is, I know it. I don't expire et to be the waiters friend. I don't expect gushing hospitality. I do expect to be related to. Perhaps looked at when you drop the check. Sometimes it only takes a moment of connection to make or break a customer's experience with a restaurant. Mine occurred here. Suffice to say I won't be returning. There are many more joints in LP that are vying for my patronage.

Yelp
Wife and I ate here and are glad we did.Food is delicious. Best New England clam chowder I had fish and chips and wife fish tacos . Both were amazing. Only regret was not getting our waitress name. She was very friendly and very attentive. We will definitely be back on our next trip. Bob H Ridge,NY

Yelp
There are a variety of food options. Not gourmet but very good for the price. Staff is friendly. Casual and fun vibe.

Yelp
I just went last night and I want to go back. If we weren't headed home, I would! Great service from a young man with a good sense of humor, and so much good food I couldn't choose between all of the options. I ended up with a cup (more like a bowl) of the watermelon gazpacho, the wedge salad and the sweet potato fries for the table. The gazpacho was excellent. Nice touch with green onion, no taste overwhelming the others. The salad was very fresh with a combination of iceberg and mixed greens, good quality Blue cheese and just the right amount of bacon. The sweet potato fries managed to be crispy and yet not overly browned. Perfect. I want to go back for the lobster roll or some of the delicious looking burgers!

Yelp
A short distance off the "main" area in Lake Placid, this place has great food in a relaxed atmosphere. When visiting, I wanted a casual place and this was it. Their menu has something for everyone including veg options. I got the summer corn risotto which was fresh with spinach and tomatoes. My friend got the noodle bowl which also was light and "healthy" loaded with veggies. Their ice cream sandwiches / milkshakes were tempting but we were too full to try. The service was fast and our waiter was friendly.

Yelp
Food was ok. Service was good. Ambiance was casual, but the tables were a bit close together.

Yelp
Outside casual (Covid times), enjoy the sunset and cool breeze. Try to grab a fire side seating if you can... Awesomeness ! Ton of selection for your cravings. I tried their Prime Rib French Dip ($16) Beef Jus, garlic Mayo, and cheddar. Served with fries.... What a winner !!! Customer service was great too. Enjoy your time here in Lake Placid.... I will be coming back here again and again !!!
google avatar

Yelp
Overpriced, small portions. They nickel and dime you for every side. This business is all about taking money, NOT the art of making good food.
google avatar

Kristin V.

Yelp
It wasn't horrible, but also wasn't great. The service was middle of the road, and the food was pretty standard. Given the prices though -- not worth it. In addition to the dishes with pics attached here, we got mac n cheese. For restaurant mac n cheese, it was 2 stars. It was soupy and the flavor was incredibly mild. The wings were fine. The salad was fine, but for $14...? Some lettuce and blue cheese? Gimme a break.

Cari C.

Yelp
Great lobster rolls! Convenient and dog friendly in good weather. We visit every time we are in the area.

Justine G.

Yelp
Honestly, I felt like we arrived at a totally different restaurant than the reviews were talking about. The price was fine, but it was the most mediocre burger I've ever had. It was served dry with tomatoes and lettuce. Oh, I got bacon that was limp and flavorless. I asked for Ketchup, mustard, onions.... took quite a while to get those delivered. And my pet peeve is anytime a restaurant is stingy on sauce. Seriously. I need Ketchup with my fries! Even the porter was a very weak tasting beer. Our waiter was super distracted and I had to flag him down multiple times for....more water...my mustard...oh, my onion... The menu was also not half as interesting as the reviews led me to believe...overall a big disappointment. We really look forward to reading out in a new town. This one has us ready to eat at home for awhile.

Yelp
Service was so slow. One staff member brought glasses of water without straws. Then It took a long time to get anyone to come to our table and when she arrived, she asked for our food order and we had to call her back to take our drink orders. The food was sitting up waiting for her to finally bring it to our table. The waitress spent considerable time chatting with a friend at another table. One of the staff members was working in PJ pants!! The ice tea looked milky and had a odd flavor. The food overall was Ok. The bathrooms were not clean. Not a good experience.

Yelp
Lorem Ipsum I will respond when I have a keyboard ... fresh crunchy delectable veg in uniform pieces. Light dressing. Needs caraway seeds.@green goddess has those.

Yelp
So, it used to be that the 'Dack Shack had very good food but the wait was pretty bad. A recent visit suggests those attributes have flipped - food comes quickly, but it's no longer especially good. The dips for onion rings were good, but the onion rings themselves were not - they were overcooked. The grilled salmon that accompanied a Caesar salad was okay, but underseasoned and a little sad looking. And the flavors of a Thai(?) inspired clam dish had unbalanced flavors -- the flavor of the turmeric was so assertive, that was all you could taste I didn't love the old version of the 'Dack Shack, but I definitely preferred it to the current configuration. On the plus side, they do continue to pour a generous drink, an admirable trait... Nevertheless, 3 stars.
google avatar

Sharon S.

Yelp
I just had the most delicious mahi mahi fish tacos! I wish we found Dack Shack sooner than today! There was a huge amount of fish in this taco-it was busting out! This is unlike another local place which shall not be named. The creme sauce and salsa was so tasty. I will come back and order it again! Hubby had French dip-also said it was a winner! Don't let the word "shack" deceive you. There is a wide selection of items on the menu that's more than just hot dogs and burgers. Come check it out!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Stoped here for a to go bite. I got the gyro and it was dynamite. It's vegetarian which I never do but ohhh man it was soooo good. My wife had the Ruben and loved it. The atmosphere was a great look but alas we had our dog and weather didn't have outside available so we ate in the car. I will go back because it dog friendly in good weather.

Victoria J.

Yelp
Food was fantastic! We stopped in not once, but twice while on vacation - the fried fish and fish tacos were definitely the best items on the menu! Service and drink refills were a bit slow, we waited almost 30 mins after finishing our meals for our check. But because the food was so good we didn't mind!
google avatar

Alexis G.

Yelp
Very friendly but it's just not good. Burgers super dry- cheese not even melted... the old fashioned was almost undrinkable, $2 shack sauce - awful, Kung pao cauliflower was steamed cauliflower in a soup of liquid (should have never been served). Wings weren't bad. $4 side of coleslaw also not great. Milk shake not cold. Skip.

Jim H.

Yelp
I was unpleasantly surprised how disgusting the food was with a $70 price point. I asked for a well done filet dinner and a bourbon bbq chicken sandwich to go. My steak was raw, cold, and not even a filet. The sandwich chicken was so overcooked it almost broke a tooth. The worst part was I called the restaurant to provide feedback. I was told that no manager was working today. I expressed my concern and the young lady who answered the phone was not surprised or sympathetic. She actually said, "well, that's how it goes sometimes."
google avatar

Cassie C.

Yelp
Grabbed dinner from here after hearing good things, and it lived up to its reputation! Ordered the fish n' chips, lobster roll, and two milkshakes (one boozy). Seafood in both entrees was fresh, filling, and would happily order again. The milkshakes were also yummy but be warned, the boozy shake is BOOZY.
google avatar

C M.

Yelp
OMG...one word....AWESOME!!! They are part of the Eat Lake Placid and they use the same platform to order online as Big Mountain Deli and ordering/pick up is super easy. I feel that this group has knocked it out of the park in regards to COVID with their ordering platform. Just Awesome!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped in during a fall foliage trip. Cute place lots of good looking items on the menu. I settled for the prime rib dip. Amazing! Loved the fries too.

Jason C.

Yelp
Food was great and service was even better. I was greeted right away at the door when i went to pick up my food. Will definitely go back.

Mark R.

Yelp
Food and service was good. Prices reasonable. The atmosphere was comfortable. This place was a very good value.

Briana T.

Yelp
Visiting Lake Placid for the first time and have gone out to eat to some not-so-great places, but this was extraordinary. The service was great and the food was even better. Great prices and great people. If you're in Lake Placid, don't waste your time and money on 'alright' places. Go here and get a good experience.
google avatar

Aubree M.

Yelp
My friend and I split the dack burger and French dip and both were delicious! Service was good.

Anne B.

Yelp
If I could give no stars I would. 3 hours for service. Food was terrible. This place used to be great. Must have new owners who don't know what they are doing.
google avatar

Laurie S.

Yelp
Had the pot roast special and it was yummy. Husband was pleased with his burger as well. Great food, beer and service!

Brittany W.

Yelp
For how expensive it is you would think the food would be phenomenal. But for $22 buffalo Mac and cheese was total crap. Soupy Mac and cheese and barely any buffalo chicken( which was $8). The "secret sauce" is weird on the burgers. Skip it. McDonald's is across the street and at least there you know what you are getting
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
Our meal at the dack shack was lousy at best. The order of onion rings was literally 7 or 8 onion rings. The prime rib French dip was pathetic, it was very small and not very good at all. The side of fries that came with the French dip was also minimal. Over all for the $77 we spent on lunch it was not good.
google avatar

Jaynne M.

Yelp
Great place. The food was good and the employees were nice. It takes both things to have a good place. The fact that you can sit outside to eat during Covid is a huge plus. We only wish they had earlier hours.
google avatar

Rebecca G.

Yelp
Where's the heat? The meat was delicious, but couldn't quite find the heat! The reuben was made with chunks of tender, thickly sliced corned beef (instead of deli-sliced slices like normally served). The french onion soup was outstanding! We throughly enjoyed our meal. The only concern was how cold the place was in the fall.

Daniela K.

Yelp
DONT ORDER ANY SIDES. They are basically $5 thimble sized shot glasses of food. I actually feel embarrassed for them how blatent a rip off this is. Literally guys, 5 dollars for a spoon full of corn or spoon full of truffle mayo! I tried to call and discuss this with them but i got a busy signal. Food was good, but again, all things considered? REASSESS YOUR PRICING PEOPLE...get ahold of yourselves.
google avatar

Tawni C.

Yelp
This place turned out to be exactly what we were looking for!! Yummy little homemade fresh food diner. You must come eat here if your in Lake Placid. We loved everything about it. Good food, great service!! The grilled cheese lobster sandwich was delicious! Why hasn't this cute diner and delicious food been on Diner, Dives and Drive inn's!?! Uh, Food Network!?! You're missing out!
google avatar

Emily Z.

Yelp
Whenever we visit, we go to the 'Dack Shack at least once. The food is top notch and the staff is very friendly. We have been twice during COVID-19 and even with the restrictions and take-out option, the food has still been great.
google avatar

Emily J.

Yelp
Hit the spot! We ordered a chicken and rice soup, and tomato bisque something... and split a giant turkey club with some pesto green sauce on the plate (amazing) with sweet potato fries. Very satisfying meal! Nice place to stop, I do recommend going!

Lo M.

Yelp
The only way I can describe the food is greasy. The fries were over saturated with grease, the fry portion was large but inconsistent (Some soggy, some not) Burger was okay, it's so big & greasey it made it hard to eat. I barely touched my food and i was starving after a long hike. Difficult to reach restaurant if you want take-out.
google avatar

Bus J.

Yelp
The place is really cozy and rustic. The. Food was top notch I had crab cake. Also. We had. The goat cheese. Beet flat bread that was. Amazing. Lobster roll was. Good and. The dak burger. Was. Good. We had drinks. I got the cucumber gin fizz Must try. And everything was. Great I would go back in a heart beat. Don't miss this place. You will regret it. I promise. Back again this year got poutine and also try Jamaican jerk wings off the charts.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
Came in for the 2 for 1 burger night with my boyfriend and our 2 friends. We sat at the bar and were greeted and served drinks right away. They have a great selection of all different kinds of beers. Our bartender was attentive and friendly. The burgers were also huge and flavorful! Fries seemed fresh and were also good. Everyone was happy with their food. At one point the restaurant did become very full and I don't think the employees were prepared for it, heard a little bit of bickering between an employee and customer which was a little embarrassing to watch. I understand being overwhelmed though. But honestly it didn't hinder our experience much other than feeling slightly uncomfortable. There were a lot of other people at the bar who seemed happy including us. We had a nice experience altogether.
google avatar

AJ G.

Yelp
Very good take out meal for the family. Kids loved the mac and cheese! Order was quickly ready for pick up.
google avatar

Daniel D.

Yelp
Ordered delivery on their busiest night when they had to stop taking orders because the kitchen couldn't keep up - and it was still delicious!! Delivery was a little slow, but hey - it's COVID-19.
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
First of all, the food was EXCELLENT. We had the braised pork shanks and it's probably one of the best things I've ever eaten. But DINER BEWARE- we ordered sodas with our meal. I even asked the waitress if kids meals included and drink (before I told my kids yes to sodas) and she said yes. We ended up being charged $19 for drinks AND REFILLS. Refills are NOT FREE. I cannot remember the last time I ate somewhere and was charged for soda refills. I feel like she should have told us that when we asked for refills since it's clearly not common. An otherwise lovey meal was wholly unpleasant because of this unfortunate situation

Stich J.

Yelp
Third time's the charm. After giving the Dack Shack three tries over the last six months I have to finally write a review. This last visit was a low point in my life. After being seated, none of the waitstaff could be bothered to take our drink order - and when our waitress finally pulled herself away from hanging out with friends, she half heartedly took our order, which she proceeded to not write down, and completely butchered. Our drinks were never delivered, and then when we asked for the bill, we're informed that she had given our bill to another table, and she seriously asked if we would just pay their bill instead, and laughed about it. The complete lack of professionalism, malaise, and unwelcoming attitude of the entire staff ensured that even as locals - we'll never return to the Dak Shack.

Helene C.

Yelp
Milkshakes were sour had to send them back. The burgers were nothing special. Crabcakes same. Overpriced and unimpressed.
