Hot San Diego Restaurant Openings You May Have Missed, October 2025 | Eater San Diego

"La Jolla— Nestled among towering office blocks in the La Jolla Commons, Daffodil Café opened on the ground floor for breakfast and lunch dining. Owner Lauren Passero-Brookes (Kensington Cafe, the Haven Pizzeria) brought in chef Sarah Palomares, who’s worked in the kitchens of Nobu in the Gaslamp Quarter and Little Lion Cafe in Point Loma. The kitchen team slings inventive dishes like coconut chia pudding with toasted coconut; a veggie sando with sauteed zucchini and eggplant; a Commons smash burger punched up with Hatch chile cheddar and an herbaceous aioli; and a chicken tikka masala Frankie, an Indian street-food naan wrap." - Helen I. Hwang

I can't give enough praise for this incredible cafe/restaurant (although I'll try). Tl;dr though: whether you work in the nearby building or are just driving by, you absolutely have to stop by Daffodil Cafe for their amazing food, warm service, and cheerful ambience. Food: I've tried essentially every item on the menu, and honestly nothing disappoints. Everything is carefully thought through, made fresh from high quality ingredients, with a distinctive flair. Highly recommend items from me are the Frittata (mushroom+sundried tomatoes, with a flavorful house-made chimichurri sauce), the Belgian Waffles (crunchy outside, soft inside with a gentle buttlemilk flavor), and the Bacon/Egg/Cheese Burrito (can't go wrong but still excellent). Service: Although the food is incredible, the service is really where Daffodil shines. Run by a small, lean team, the ladies from the owner to the server are all lovely, chipper, and welcoming. From first time visitors to regulars (of which they have many), they greet you with a warm welcome and do whatever they can to make sure you have a great meal from start to finish. Atmosphere: Bright, open interior with a cute mini-bazaar full of interesting, hand-picked snacks. Plentiful seating that can accommodate individuals to large groups. Easy to access with parking validation. Food spots within walking distance is sparse in this area, so having a high quality eatery like Daffodil here is a godsend. Even if you don't work in the nearby buildings or are just visiting the area, I highly recommend you give Daffodil Cafe a try.

We came across this hidden little gem while browsing La Jolla. It is in La Jolla commons so plenty of spaces for parking & they also validate parking. If you are looking for clean, fresh light food with so much flavour this is the spot. Very refreshing to find somewhere that deserves a review with 5 out of 5 stars ⭐️. Niddia is the manager and so attentive & friendly so much so when my husband was ordering his cookie she warmed it up. We came here for breakfast and delighted to have found such a lovely spot. Coffee was delicious. Thank you for a lovely experience Niddia. Your Irish supporters Robert & Lorraine 🇮🇪

The owner and staff are incredibly kind and welcoming. The food is so good. Every dish is a 10. Best waffles in San Diego. I hope they open on weekends soon!

Google
Pretty spacious interior with cute decor. The food was not bad and pretty filling with decent portions. Both the avocado toast and lox toast had so much stuff on it and was really filling. The cafe can validate parking for an hour, but after that the parking is paid.

I had such a great time here! The staff were so friendly. Nidia was exceptional with everyone that walked in the door. She knew their names, gave great recommendations and really made it feel like home with her hospitable service at daffodil! The food was amazing with great portions. The ambiance was calm yet positive and lively. I highly recommend coming here for breakfast/brunch, you will not be disappointed ☺️😋

Absolutely loved our visit to Daffodil Cafe! I requested a customized vegan sandwich with avocado to suit my dietary preference, and they got it just right – fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced for a morning bite. My husband had the burrito wrap, which was equally delicious and hearty. Really appreciate how they tailored everything to our needs – warm service, healthy ingredients, and such tasty food! Will definitely be coming back. 💚

Kindly welcomed and helped immediately. Loaded menu, serves alcohol. Live plants all around relaxing and festive (holiday) atmosphere. I will be back! Parking not my favorite although out of the cafe's control hence 4 stars Didn't have food to review.

Google
Found this place on Instagram ordering was super quick and easy. I got a vegan burrito, avocado toast, and banana latte. Everything was delicious. The banana latte didn’t really taste like banana at all though, but I highly recommend and would come back. They also validate parking for an hour.

Yelp
My friend and I stumbled upon this cafe tucked away inside a local business park, and wow, what a score. This is seriously a hidden gem that deserves all the hype. We had to try both breakfast and lunch. The Classic Breakfast Croissant Sandwich was perfectly done--flaky, buttery, and a great, satisfying start to the day. Next up was the Smashed Burger. Topped with crispy bacon, melted Hatch cheddar, perfectly caramelized onions, and a vibrant herbed aioli, it was seriously incredible. I just kept saying "wow just wow" after every bite. But the true champion was THE TURKEY SANDWICH. Served on soft ciabatta with provolone and fresh mixed greens, the secret is the house-made bacon jam. That jam takes the whole thing over the top--it was absolutely to die for. The best part? The ciabatta was so soft and fresh, it did not cut the top of my mouth. That small detail shows serious attention to quality. Everything was fresh, high-quality, and delicious. Will definitely be back! Go check it out!

Yelp
They've been open since June and look like they are set to thrive. The owner brought her Kensington Cafe to University City. The food was delicious and fully satisfying. My partner had the Commons Smashburger (new on the menu) and said it's one of the best he's ever had. The thick cut bacon and aioli were excellent on it. Our daughter had the Chicken Tikka Masala Frankie, delicious and came with a nice yogurt sauce- get extra napkins, it's worth it. I had the Lox Toast- bread perfectly toasted and the salad with the lemon vinaigrette had a lovely bite that paired well with the lox. I made it into a sandwich so I wouldn't miss a bit of it. Had to try the Banana coffee drink- it's on the sweet side (delish), so order it half sweet if you have a coffee forward preference. Nydia was very attentive to all the customers. She and the owner visited every table ensuring we felt welcome and cared for. Use the parking structure- best option and they will validate for 1 free hour. They are open M-F 7:00-2:30. They have a QR code and the ability to order online. We will definitely be back again.

Yelp
Cute spacious spot tucked away near office buildings. The owners were sweet and checked up on us a few times, and the food came out pretty quickly. The commons smash burger: The sauce was really good, tangy and herby and I loved it with the caramelized onions. The patty was a little overdone/dry and the fries were pretty standard. Classic breakfast sandwich: The croissant itself was standard, the egg patty was thick and fluffy and came with arugula, bacon, and cheese. The overall sandwich was a bit under-balanced and a little dry. Belgian waffle: Loved the fresh whipped cream! I do wish the waffles weren't as dense and the compote wasn't so thick and overly sweet almost like a jam. The blueberries on top were also a little old/wrinkly. I do think they are super friendly and it's a nice space, but with a few tweaks to their freshness it would be much better!

Yelp
Such a hidden cute little oasis of joy, cozyness and great food too! I went there as I was at a doctor appointment nearby and wanted to try something new. Then I was surprised that was inside a complex of mostly financial buildings (but they validate one hour parking). I parked on the street because I didn't know that I also wanted to see the sculptures in campus. I like the touch of green in this café. Warm greeting from the lady who speaks Spanish, very beautiful and welcoming and she suggested I try the salmon toast that was awesome and satisfying. Capuccino was also perfectly done. Very clean and spacious yet very cozy.

Yelp
Daffodil Cafe is located on the ground level adjacent to one of the office buildings of the La Jolla Commons complex. They validate parking for one hour in a visitor's space inside the nearby deck. After that, the rate was $1.75 for every 15 minutes or part of. The inside was spacious with several tables for seating along with a large sofa and lounge chairs in the middle. Two large menu screens, one for breakfast and one for lunch, hung on the wall to the right when you entered the suite. I visited in the early afternoon while there was one party seated playing a card game. The lunch menu featured three salads, five sandwiches/wraps, three bowls, and six sides. I picked a Chicken Tikka Masala Frankie as a bowl. The item was the kitchen's twist to a classic Indian cuisine staple. Stewed chicken was cooked with Indian spices and served with white basmati rice, tomato, red onion, cucumber, and green chili yogurt sauce. The mixture was not spicy, yet it was pretty flavorful. A couple of pieces of naan would have been a nice enhancement. There was a free WiFi signal so I spent time catching up on my laptop before I realized that the extra parking time would not be covered by the validation. Those who work in the surrounding offices now have a new option within walking distance for dining. I enjoyed my lunch at Daffodil Cafe to give it a four star rating.

Yelp
The service was great. I couldn't find the location but I called for help with finding and the lady that answered was so kind and helpful. I arrived and the interior was very nice and well decorated. Ordering was quick and they also validate parking for an hour which is a plus. I ordered a Lox toast and an iced apple latte. Both were very tasty and overall the price was $25 which I think was worth everything. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Daffodil is an amazing addition to the neighborhood. The staff is friendly and the food is amazing. The tikka masala bowl is my favorite, at least this week. Or the smash burger. And there's a breakfast waffle you can't skip out on. Point is, can't go wrong at Daffodil!

Yelp
Cafe serving breakfast and lunch. The service is friendly. I got the Chicken Tikka Masala Frankie, it's a wrap. Pretty good. The chicken is flavorful and not dry. The naan bread is good. I like the green chili yogurt sauce. The side salad that came with it is good too, has colorful large strips of carrots. The sauce of the chicken though made the wrap soggy pretty quickly and it started falling apart in my hand. So I think it may be better as a bowl with the naan on the side. But wouldn't look as pretty in a bowl. I wish I had more yogurt sauce too.

Yelp
I went to this little spot for the first time today and I absolutely adore it. The cauliflower rice bowl with chicken was delicious and the raspberry white chocolate latte is my new favorite coffee--delicious and flavorful without being overly sugary. The space is fresh and open and has a lot of light shining through. It has a happy, uplifting feel to it. The manager gave me suggestions on food/drinks and was warm and inviting. Highly recommend and will be returning when I need good food and relaxing coffee and journaling time.
