I remember my first visit to the Lake District in the 1980s ... we stayed in little family B&Bs and the idea of luxury seemed planets away. Now, at the foot of Grasmere Lake, less than a football field away from William Wordsworth's Dove Cottage and Lake Grasmere, is the exquisite hotel and spa named for the poet's favorite flower.
I'm a two-time English degree holder, so I'm a sucker for little touches of literature. I loved their interior pictures and artwork ... Ronald Dahl book covers, Beatrix Potter stuff, and, of course, Wordsworth.
The rooms are amazing, the food is amazing, you won't want to leave after a spa treatment.
It is EXPENSIVE. The thing that sets Daffodil apart is the "at home" feel you get ... you don't just feel like a pampered guest, you feel like part of the family. It reminds me of the first luxury hotel I stayed at in the UK ... the Randolph in Oxford ... it's a place you wouldn't mind spending Christmas at because you feel at home.
Anything that gets people to Grasmere, and to the history of Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, is tops in my book. Trust me, come to the Lake District ... and if you want to see it at its most luxurious, stay at the Daffodil.
Rain, spritz, or shine, you will definitely feel the presence of Wordsworth, walking the hotel grounds on the lake.
"I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze."
