Daffodil Hotel | Best places to stay in the Lake District

"This large, well-run hotel makes a sensible and smart place to stay. It’s in a very central spot near Grasmere, and is the only hotel in the area with a proper lakeside location. It’s extremely handy for visiting the main Wordsworth sites, too: Dove Cottage is right across the road. Facilities are excellent (including the lovely spa) and the hotel feels surprisingly modern, despite its imposing Victorian façade. Family rooms, junior suites, accessible rooms – you’ll find them all at the Daffodil, making this one of the Lake District’s most versatile hotels. " - Oliver Berry

The hotel is in a great location right on the lake, but that's the best thing!|When we checked in we were early and receptionist straight away said your room won't be ready until 3pm! She didn't bother looking to see if it was ready or anything. We decided to get a coffee and headed up to the lounge, the room was dated and sofas very uncomfortable. |We headed back to reception at 2.20pm, again same dismissive receptionist, others were also waiting so maybe they just don't let you in the room until 3 regardless of whether it's ready or not! |The room when we did get in at 3, was a junior suite! This was the worse junior suite for £325 I'd ever stayed in. The carpet was frayed, bathroom bland with a shower that was pathetic and shower tray where you felt you could fall through at any moment. It had a table at the window and each side of this half a very uncomfortable sofa, so as a couple you couldn't sit together! Very dark room so trying to get ready at the dressing table with a tiny mirror and no lights was a challenge. The view was nice but traffic sounds so not exactly peaceful! Dressing-gown was tiny and towels thin. |Spa wasn't worth it as far as small pool and busy. But spa treatments very good and the lady on the spa reception was lovely and so friendly, nice relaxation room, has the drift away and foot treatments, so positive for the spa treatment area! |Breakfast was ok, you can have tea coffee and toast brought to the table and a few other things like poached eggs, pancakes and black pudding can be ordered fresh. |The hotel needs a complete refurb lots of areas in the hallways in need of tlc, such as stains on carpets, furniture chipped etc. not 4 star

I stayed a couple of days in the hotel. Good location, beautiful spot on the lake. Our room was clean and nice. Service was good, although we can see that all staff works under management pressure . Therefore, our breakfast was spot on by one of Romanian waiter, Florin, who take extra care about us. He was polite, helpful and friendly. I think he is very professional in that industry. Good choice of coffee and tea. We will definitely come back because of Florin and his service. His service is brilliant. I just wonder why he is not a manager over there.... Lovely break for us.

Description and photos on the website must have been taken some time ago. Room was clean and comfortable but nothing outstanding. We paid extra for a lake view room, nice if you are spending a lot of time in your room. Food didn't blow us away so don't get too excited. Much better quality offerings available in the local area.

We went here for tea after a visit to Wordsworth's Grasmere. It was an odd experience. We walked in and asked the front desk about afternoon tea and she had to call the restaurant to make sure we could be accommodated. We would've been more than happy to just have lunch since we were really hungry. We were finally allowed to go upstairs and told we could have tea. It was clearly a nicer restaurant, which was just fine, but we felt a bit out of place. The tea was great, but took quite a while to get our bill since we couldn't find any of the staff. It seems like a great location and nice facility, but I felt very out of place.

My first time at the Lakes and I couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. The location and hotel are stunning, The location and views are truly breathtaking, it has easy access to many walks around the lake and more.|I also have to say I was very happy with the service from the staff they were all friendly and extra helpful, We had the breakfast and I would definitely recommend. I am definitely coming back to the Daffodil as its breathtaking views and warm service has won us over.

My wife and I booked a single night for our 30th wedding anniversary. We chose the Lake View room on the first floor. As soon as we walked into the hotel it was obvious the location was extremely clean and modern. Our room was excellent. Plenty of room and well furnished. (The bed was so comfortable. I have a chronic bad back and I've never slept so well in years). The view from the large window and us realise we'd chosen the correct room. |We chose to dine in the hotel for our evening meal. We were given a great table for two at the window. The smoked salmon starter was amazing. I've never eaten salmon that tasted so delightful. The steaks were succulent and delicious with the best triple cooked chips I've eaten in a while. We shared a sticky toffee pudding which was also without fault. |Great selection of beers on offer too. |The full cooked breakfast was also great. |The staff were all very polite and professional. |All in all a very pleasant stay and we will, without a doubt, stay there again.

Having visited this hotel the previous October in 2024, we were keen to return as we'd had a lovely time. Unfortunately the Junior suite we'd booked had a faulty blind which looked awful and there were stains on the carpet. To the credit of the lovely receptionist, we were moved immediately to a better suite and all seemed fine. However as time went on we both noticed a drainy smell in the bathroom which got worse over the 3 nights we were there. In the restaurant, particularly on the Friday evening of Storm Amy, the staff were great but overworked and there were delays to the service. We had also been told at reception that the kitchen could not adapt the menu to accommodate us vegetarians. Unable to leave the hotel due to the storm, we decided to go straight to the restaurant and see what would happen. Again, the staff were very helpful and said it was no problem to create food for us. Not sure why the chap at reception had said otherwise. Our overall impression this time around was that the hotal generally seemed tired and not so polished. The setting is wonderful, our view was lovely and most of the staff including maintenance were great. However, a revamp is maybe needed to bring the rooms up to the level expected. Also more staff would help to ease the burden at very busy meal times.

We have stayed here on many occasion but this last time we were very disappointed with our stay. |Carpets dirty and stained, Rooms cold even with heating on, spa not very clean and button not working properly even after mentioning to girl on spa desk. |Food menu minimal and disappointing. |When checking out we weren’t even asked how was our stay! This hotel has definitely gone down over the last 2 years and it’s such a shame as it’s a lovely hotel in a perfect location. We are going to be giving it a miss in the future and try somewhere else

Yelp
We stayed here during our visit to the Lake District and I highly recommend it! We were there for hiking in mid-July and I expected it to be flooded with tourist (like us) but it wasn't. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking and our hikes were amazing. (Helm Crag, Silver How & Easdale Tarn) The staff at the Daffodil were friendly and helpful. Our stay included breakfast which included a great selection of hot and cold items. Our room was a corner unit with a fabulous view and it was clean and well maintained. Unfortunately, I didn't have any spa treatments but I did take advantage of the pool, sauna and steam room. Fabulous! The only strange thing is, if your coming from your room in your bathing suit and robe, you do have to walk into the lobby to access the spa area. Just a little odd I thought. I honestly cannot day enough nice things about this place and I can't wait to visit again. If I could teleport back to any point in time in our entire vacation it would be to Grasmere. A stunning place to visit and a stunning hotel to stay at.

Yelp
I remember my first visit to the Lake District in the 1980s ... we stayed in little family B&Bs and the idea of luxury seemed planets away. Now, at the foot of Grasmere Lake, less than a football field away from William Wordsworth's Dove Cottage and Lake Grasmere, is the exquisite hotel and spa named for the poet's favorite flower. I'm a two-time English degree holder, so I'm a sucker for little touches of literature. I loved their interior pictures and artwork ... Ronald Dahl book covers, Beatrix Potter stuff, and, of course, Wordsworth. The rooms are amazing, the food is amazing, you won't want to leave after a spa treatment. It is EXPENSIVE. The thing that sets Daffodil apart is the "at home" feel you get ... you don't just feel like a pampered guest, you feel like part of the family. It reminds me of the first luxury hotel I stayed at in the UK ... the Randolph in Oxford ... it's a place you wouldn't mind spending Christmas at because you feel at home. Anything that gets people to Grasmere, and to the history of Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter, is tops in my book. Trust me, come to the Lake District ... and if you want to see it at its most luxurious, stay at the Daffodil. Rain, spritz, or shine, you will definitely feel the presence of Wordsworth, walking the hotel grounds on the lake. "I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze."
