Yelp
I first read about Dago Bagel, a bagel shop operating within the Toscano Brothers bakery (known for sourdough), and award-winning pizzaiolo and restaurateur Tony Gemignani in SF Eater a few months ago. I thought it was so cool he was opening up a bagelry under "dago", which is a slur for Italians. As your local Chinese-Russian-Jew, I love me some reclaiming of racial appellatives!
It took a few months, but I finally made it to Dago. I go by North Beach quite a bit, but the hours never really aligned until now. First thing I noticed was the light green exterior and parklet. So bright! So cute! I took a step inside and immediately loved the interior decor as well--there's a retro Coke refrigerator and cool artwork.
In addition to bagels, they offer sandwiches, cannolis, tiramisu, cookies, chews, and more. I grabbed 3 everything bagels in a bag for $3 to-go and to freeze (is that blasphemy? I thought it'd be convenient for future carbs.)
I also ordered the Serrano pepper and Asiago bagel ($2.85) with Calabria cream cheese ($1.50) because it seemed like the item with the most posted pictures on their Yelp page. Delicious! I'd order it again next time, but I want to try other bagels and schmears.
According to SF Eater, these are "tried and true New York-style bagels, twisted by hand, boiled in water and malt syrup, and baked to a chewy, almost tough texture. [Gemignani's] been working on the recipe for years with fellow pizza champion Adam Sachs, perfecting the style and even making his own pine boards for baking the bagels."
Service was wonderful, I saw Gemignani himself and he said hi and was friendly (no big deal!) You bet I'll be back for more.
