Yelp
A great place for sandwiches in the North Myrtle Beach area, as one would hope from a restaurant named for a legendary sandwich aficionado.
In general, it's hard to find restaurants with a wide variety of sandwiches, much less good ones, anywhere in the region. Special attention has clearly been paid to the choices of ingredients and, in particular, the rolls. Most of the good sandwich places in Pennsylvania would get their rolls from local bakeries -- so it takes some effort to manage to get similar rolls in coastal SC. Even the Philly cheesesteak is excellent (if occasionally a little under-filled) -- not 100% authentic, but actually better than some of the more overrated cheesesteak joints in Philly; critically, Dagwood's seems to have found the right cheese (maybe Cooper's or New Yorker, I think). The other subs, all (very importantly) on great rolls, are also terrific (also, occasionally, under-filled -- luckily, the rolls are good).
The service is friendly, and the atmosphere is excellent. There are televisions playing sports absolutely everywhere. Which is great if there's a particular game you want to see. For those of us uninterested in televised feats of athleticism, the overall effect of this oversaturation of sounds, colors, motion, and lights is surprisingly calming. It's like being in multiple midnight laser light shows simultaneously, while eating sub sandwiches.
If there's a significant flaw, it's really only that they close at 9, which seems awfully early for a sports bar. It feels like it should be a "closes at 11" kind of place. Also, there really isn't much in the way of cooked vegetables (or anything remotely healthy-ish) on the menu. There are salads (and they are good), but that's about it. Dagwood's appears to be one of several Pittsburgh-centric bar/restaurants in the area, and Pittsburgh isn't exactly famed for healthy meals -- but, heck, eating grilled squash while watching their legendary pro sports teams probably wouldn't seem right, anyway.
Come on out for the great subs. Or heroes/zeps/grinders/hoagies. (Or, if you're truly from Philly, "hewgies.")
