25 Places to Really Bug Out

"A couple kilometers after crossing the Daintree River, a metal spider web gate pokes between the trees. A horseshoe driveway brings guests up to a timber cottage, where you’ll find the Daintree Entomological Museum, the largest collection of rare and bizarre insects in Australia. An immense vase of fresh leafy branches stands near the welcome desk. Leaf and stick insects—some larger than a hand—cling to the branches, seemingly able to escape their exhibit at any moment. A drabby toad the size of a dinner plate breathes quietly in a box. Specially built cases with rows of pinned insects line all of two or three square rooms, leaving only narrow paths for visitors to tread. The collection is the life’s work of Australian naturalist Stephen Lamond, designed, built, and funded by Lamond himself. Lamond travelled extensively, collecting insects from around Australia and the rest of the world—at least one case dedicated to beetles from Kazakhstan. Any lack in labelling is compensated for by the organization of the collection’s more than 150,000 specimens. The vast size of Lamond’s collection allows visitors to see not only how species differ, but how much size, color, and shape can vary within a species. Robust cases of beetles, butterflies, and spiders allow even a casual hiker to appreciate evolution at work." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

MUSEUM NOT CLOSED. I visited it yesterday as owner was returning from a Cape York collecting trip. Collection is immense and well organized. I was thrilled with the live butterflies flitting around the flowering shrubs outside. Even more thrilling was the quick lesson on how to locate spiky leaf sticks on the small trees in front. Don’t skip the stop at the creek platform.

Disappointed to find the gates shut and a closed sign. Mixed reviews say permanently closed while others saying still open... opening hours say 10am open, got there at 10am to find a closed sign at the gate. Came back later just in case but it was still closed. Phone number disconnected, website link dead, no updates to hours on social media. Such a shame, my son and I were looking forward to checking it out.

We enjoyed the visit. We arrived late and the very friendly staff fired up the generator to put the lights back on. We got to look at a couple of live specimens out the front and then checked out the collection. Worth a look if you are interested in insects (many of the specimens were collected outside of Australia).

A must visit if you’re in the area! Such a huge wonderful collection! It’s cash only for entry as well. It’s a family run business with wonderful knowledge of the collection, and great stories of some very interesting bugs! They also sell beautiful bugs and butterflies to take home, great memorabilia of the local area. Really beautiful creek on the property too, with great tables perfect for morning tea ☺️

This place was so unique and incredibly interesting. One of our highlights while spending time in cape trib! The bugs, the stone work and the creek are amazing along with the local hospitality offered with the experience of visiting. Some incredible bugs on display and the artwork of the bug collector (sorry I forget his name) is amazing. I will remember this experience for a long time to come.
