Metro Detroit’s Best Soft Serve Ice Cream | Eater Detroit

"Your one stop shop for coneys, sloppy joes, banana bread, and custard, Clawson’s Dairy Bar has been cooling down metro Detroiters for more than 45 years. Staples like its custard Cyclones and homemade cookie ice cream sandwiches make for the perfect treat. Grab a cone dipped in peanut butter, butterscotch, or any of the spot’s other 13 topping options." - Will Reaume

I had the pleasure of dining at this gem of a diner recently, and it exceeded all expectations. From the moment I walked in, the classic American diner aesthetic and the vibrant local character set the tone for a memorable experience. The service was outstanding—attentive, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. The portions were generous, and the food was expertly seasoned. I enjoyed a hearty breakfast of eggs, bacon, and French toast, all perfectly cooked and incredibly satisfying. Despite its modest exterior, don’t let appearances fool you—this place is a true find. Conveniently located just a short drive from the interstate, it’s well worth the detour if you’re looking for something far better than your typical chain restaurant fare. Extremely reasonable prices seal the deal. Highly recommend!

A local greasy spoon. Food like mom made it. A locals honey hole.

Turn back the clock at this old-fashioned diner. Feel free to walk into this friendly place, and take a seat at the bar seats and watch the meals come flying out. This greasy spoon old-fashioned diner offers up good food at a great price. Most of the items are deep-fried, but the best thing that I've had is by far the hamburgers which are not frozen, but rather real beef patties. The staff is super nice and restaurant is super welcoming.

This is a hidden gem. On the other side of the railroad tracks but it’s delicious. The service is great, food is amazing and the price is very reasonable. Go now if you haven’t

Yelp
Been going here for years. Great service, locally owned, typical breakfast lunch counter type diner. Best burgers in Ashland. The owner's wife kept it going after he passed away. I still stop in whenever I'm back in Ohio to visit family and friends.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast sandwiches on a road trip down south. The women who answered the phone to take our to go order couldn't have been nicer either. Prices were reasonable and the food was solid. We ordered two bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches on toast. Simple and satisfying.

Yelp
This is an example of one of those places that locals either celebrate or have merely heard the legend of. It's inescapably a "greasy spoon" type of joint, with the ol' stools at the bar and the grill fully visible and sputtering. Don't go here for health food, but do go here for cheap, quick grub if you're hungry and don't mind some preservatives in what you're chowing on. Personally, I go here 100% for the milkshakes, which shake heaven and earth with their tastiness. Pick your ice cream and watch them scoop it heftily, plopping it into the milk and buzzing away to blend it all together into $2.50 frothy sweet deliciousness. Go. Go now.

Yelp
It's been two years since my last visit, and nothing has changed here. I came back and it's the same great food, the same great staff. Apparently nothing has changed in decades, and that's why they do what they do so well. I can't say enough how friendly the women behind the counter are here. I hope this place never changes, five stars all day!

Yelp
Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing here. I came to this place because of all the rave reviews, but I wasn't as impressed. One reviewer on another site called the burgers and fries the best they'd ever had, so I figured it was worth a shot. But the cheeseburger I got was tiny -- as in, the bun was bigger. I was expecting a big, juicy homemade patty, but this was so thin, you could barely taste the beef. It made me think of those old "Where's the beef?" Wendy's ads. The fries were ok. I'm not big on crinkle fries, but they were crispy and it was a decent-sized order. And to be fair, the place was super cheap. It's your basic hole-in-the-wall diner, which is cute, but they really need to beef up those burgers (pun intended). And the reviewer who said these were the best burgers and fries ever needs to get out more.

Yelp
The Dairy Bar is a great place to eat. It's small but you get great food!! The fry order is huge!

Yelp
Great Prices...Decent Food with friendly service. I went there for the first time ever for dinner the other day and really enjoyed it. I really think that this way to go here is burger, fries, and a shake for lunch/dinner. I had the country fried steak dinner with rye toast. The steak was standard but the eggs were great! One of the other guys I was with got the burger and it looked really good. I've heard great things about the breakfast. If you like hole in the wall places this is your kind of place. Expect no frills because there are none. Another Ashland area institution crossed off my list. P.S. - Slightly odd location and no real signage but trust me it's there

Yelp
If you want a great home cook feel in a nice clean cozy little place this is the best place in town!!!

Yelp
My mom came here as a kid which shows you how long this place has been serving great food. The shakes are amazing and the burgers are to die for. I would recommend coming here if you like short waits and good food. Also one last thing everyone is so polite.

Yelp
Me and a friend went in I had breakfast and he had a bologna sandwich that he ordered custom. My breakfast was good and my buddy said his sandwich was great. Cheep to.

Yelp
Have some great memories at this place. Mac n cheese bites are the bomb, I'm a fan of the grilled chicken sammich but honesty everything is great. Drink the coffee, lots of it.

Yelp
Very nice little dive. A little worn down but the food was tasty. We had breakfast. my country fried steak was very good. The wife enjoyed her French toast, said it was a little plain. The bacon was excellent. I was intrigued by the shakes with egg added, but didn't have room to try one.

Yelp
Waitresses add so much to the warm welcoming feeling at the Dairy Bar. Prices are fair, and coffee great. Many refills. Thanks!

Yelp
One of my favorite lunch places in the area. Great simple, food. My face is the ham and egg sandwich! Yummo. Great burgers. The ladies that work there are so sweet!!

Yelp
Cleanliness: My silverware was a bit dirty, so I cleaned it with water and hand sanitizer. The servers should probably either wear gloves and change them more frequently or start washing their hands after touching things like cleaning rags, credit cards, cash, the cash register, etc. before touching food and food surfaces. Food: The food was decent. My milkshake was the consistency of water, so I didn't drink it. I was disappointed because everyone seems to rave about their shakes. What seemed like a pet hair (black and thick) was in the food (2 items) of my dining companion. Service: I think our server said 2 words to us, and looked like she would rather be anywhere else. Atmosphere: It was a nice little throwback. Overall: I plan to never return.

Yelp
I have been going here pretty regularly for the past few years. I loved coming here until my most recent visit this morning. Our waitress was wearing a shirt with a DISGUSTING and very OFFENSIVE saying on it. She was very rude. She brought us filthy silverware. I went in the bathroom and washed all of our silverware before using it. THERE WAS HAIR IN BOTH OF THE THINGS I ORDERED!!! I ordered oatmeal and it was not mixed well at all ( a large portion of it was just dry oats) and as I said there was hair in it! My husband's order was wrong. My sister ordered pancakes and the syrup was taken away from her before she had even used it once. We all three ordered milkshakes because they are normally so good at the dairy bar. But we watched our waitress who had just had a dirty dish rag in her hands use her fingers to scoop the peanutbutter into my milkshake!! I looked at my milkshake and it was watery and as I said before, it had a hair in it!!!! My sisters milkshake was also very watery. I was so appalled by the the hair and people putting their dirty fingers in my food that I did not even take a sip of my milk shake. I left both things I ordered sitting on the table. SO DISGUSTING!!

Yelp
Place is kinda rundown, but the food is the bomb. Been going here since I was a little kid!
