Dairy Palace in Canton Serves Game Burgers Worth a Road Trip - Eater Dallas

"Dairy Palace is an east Texas burger stalwart that’s been slinging perfectly cooked patties since 1984. Here, burger enthusiasts can try patties made with ostrich, bison, duck, wild boar, or venison, including a classic beef burger. The bison burger is highly recommended as it is lean, slightly gamey, and flavorful. The venue also offers milkshakes, malts, fruit pies, and sorbets. The Dairy Palace motto is 'quality first, speed second', with each burger cooked to order and the ground beef prepared at the restaurant." - Amy McCarthy

Ordered fried mushrooms, bacon burger with fries, steak fingers with fries, chicken fried chicken, and chicken fried steak with fried pickles. I have to be honest, I think this place is overrated. The mushrooms were ok. The burger was overcooked. The meat was cold and flavorless. The rest of the food was just ok. No one was crazy about the breading. The pickles were also bad. There was also something wrong with the soft drinks. Three different types of drinks and all lacked syrup. So the drinks had very taste. I did like the fries. The service was great. There was a line to order. The food came out quickly, considering how many orders were made before us. Taste is subjective, but preparation is not.

Google
I recently visited , and it quickly became one of my favorite spots! The restaurant has a charming, nostalgic diner feel that took me back to simpler times. The hamburgers were cooked to perfection—juicy, flavorful, and served with all the classic toppings. But what really stole the show was their ice cream. Creamy, rich, and with just the right amount of sweetness, it was the perfect way to end the meal. The retro decor and friendly service made the experience even better. If you're craving a trip down memory lane with some great food, this is the place to go!" THEY HAD SO MANY OPTIONS!! the ice cream was amazing . The kids loved it! The drink called the wild one was so good!!!

I visited Dairy Palace in Canton, Texas, and was really looking forward to trying their food, especially with their great reputation. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. After a long wait (45 minutes) in the drive-thru, I waited over 20 minutes in the parking lot after paying. I heard so many good things about dairy Palace I was willing to wait as I was really looking forward to the awesome meal everyone has been telling me about .When I finally received my order, my fries were cold and soggy, my shake was melted, and my burger was just okay—not the hot, delicious meal I had anticipated. I understand that the staff seemed overwhelmed, possibly due to being understaffed, but the quality of the food and the long wait were really disappointing, especially for the $19 I spent. I know this place is well-loved and has a good reputation, so I hope this was just an off day. I really hope Dairy Palace can improve, as I want to see small businesses thrive. I have the Opportunity to return to Canton sometime between Friday and Sunday . I will definitely be swinging by to see if I can get the experience everyone has bragged about .

Google
Nice family owned spot that’s got an old school vibe to it, located right off the interstate. The burger was free great, the bacon was thick and cooked perfectly. Curly fries and their house ranch were good as well. Didn’t try the ice cream but they have several Blue Bell options. Prices were very reasonable, you’ll get your moneys worth here compared to the fast food options located around this place.

Google
We recently had lunch at the Dairy Palace, and it was a fantastic experience. The burger was excellent. Also had an elk burger which was also good. Loved the curly fries; they were crispy and delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. We’ll definitely be coming back again!

Google
Yummy! I had the Spam burger and my husband had the Elk burger; we split an order of onion rings. Yummy! We were so full we couldn’t enjoy any ice cream, but it looked great!

Situation Normal

Google
Can believe a burger could be soooo bad from a place with such a good reputation… The burger was SUPER dry and cold, the fries were old! We waited 30 minutes for our food, WHY??? it’s was all cold! I dont typically post bad reviews but just stay clear and go to sonic, you will be happier!

Google
This places reminded me of a place call Griff's in Albuquerque NM, no longer open but the flavors took me back to when I use to eat there. Juicy, tender and great flavors great burger. It's just the flavors of the meat the caramelization of the meat that makes it a great burger.

Yelp
The food is always good, no matter what you order. Service ia fast and friendly. Building is always clean, and laid out nice for what it is.

Yelp
Very great greeting. We went for breakfast and everything went very well. I got the Country Breakfast everything was cooked good and tasteful.

Yelp
Was passing through when I saw this place. The elk burger was good Tater tots were also good I'd probably stop by again to try something else out. Service was good also I was in and out

Yelp
We went twice in 2 days. It's right on the highway. Long line out the door but it goes fast. Burgers were delicious--specifically the jalepeno and the 1/3 burger. Get the curly fries. Ambiance is crowded and a little dated but it's a family owned older restaurant. Women's bathroom is oddly configured.

Yelp
I stopped in to get something for hungry diabetic. I ordered small hamburger... they fixed this burger correctly but my "beef" was the quality of the beef.... never again will I eat a burger there I am thinking .. .. it had either been cooked the night before and they had the nerve to serve it to me that way or they had some sort of cow that, probably couldn't even walk they were serving up!!! It tasted like saw dust or something REALLY NASTY.... SHAME ON YOU AS YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE KNOWN FOR QUALITY BURGER!!! I HAD TO GET ON FREEWAY YO GO SOMEWHERE... I had to spit it out in my napkin BUT NEVER AGAIN!!! Mc Donald's mustery meat is better!!!! Never again!! Zero stars if I had the ability to do so!!!!! Grrrrrr!

Yelp
Locally owned and operated since 1984. This place will bring you back in time. The fried mushrooms were amazing. I had the bacon cheeseburger and was not impressed. The small ice cream was only $3 dollars. Stop by this place if you are driving through the area. The prices were very reasonable and the food is just OK.

Yelp
Whenever we are in Canton, we have to stop and get a double bacon cheeseburger and the best onion rings this side of the North Pole. Santa approved.

Jean B.

Yelp
I've stopped at Dairy Palace many many times over the years, my mouth watering for a great burger and onion rings. in fact, two days ago I suggested to someone who has never been there that we stop for lunch What a huge disappointmen! All 3 of us got a burger that was overcooked....very dry and tasteless. to make it worse, the onion rings were not hand dipped! they were frozen!

Yelp
Stopped here on our road trip back from New Orleans. This place had almost everything. O ordered the bacon cheeseburger with Curley fries and Almond pistachio ice cream on a waffle cone. The burger was fresh with all the works and it was so good. The curly fries was hot and good. The ice cream was delicious. Gotta try this place out if you're passing by. Trust me you will not regret it.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to stop when roadtripping in Texas, ever since I was a kid! This place is always busy, which is a good sign (because it's just so good). Although it's busy, the service is quick & efficient! The atmosphere is based on their 4-H involvement around the town & surrounding areas, along with military appreciation, definitely a southern feel, so it's inviting. The business is family owned & operated since the 80's & I love to see new updates each time I go. The food has always been great in my opinion. The burgers taste fresh every time... can't wait to go back next time I head that way!

Yelp
Who hasn't been to the Dairy Palace? This place is LEGENDARY! I've seen more than a few of their stickers on famous musicians instrument cases over the years. In East Texas and beyond the grounds of First Monday, you can mention it and almost everyone will know it. The joy of Dairy Palace isn't the incredibly small bathrooms, the conservative messaging throughout, or even the twisty and turny drive through. The joy of Dairy Palace is that it's a hometown stop that serves countless folks year after year. The menu is like Dairy Queen on steroids. Want tacos? Can do! A burger? You know it! Fried fish? Coming right up. Flounder filet with rice and veggies (as pictured) you can get that, too. Heck, even THAT is coated and covered in butter. I love the shakes and malts counter. You can get so many different flavors of Blue Bell, and the malt is just that - a malt! I grew up out here, and I love stopping in when I go home. My arteries - they probably don't love it so much, but at least I can pretend when I eat my grilled to the point of basically being fried flounder.

Yelp
The burgers here use to be great, now just a former shadow of what they were. The beef patties are old and really not warm as if they had the cooked beef patty sitting out. I understand you need to serve people in a timely manner, but quality over quantity. Getting a hot, juicy, cooked-to-order burger use to be a big deal here. Now to get something fresh you have to order a type of burger, like an Impossible Burger, to be served hot. My partner and I even compared, again, the difference. It's sad. I wish they would bring back the elevator music. It was more endurable than the contemporary Christian music where they keep shouting "Amen" loudly as you attempt to eat a lukewarm burger. And some of the staff act like they have no marbles while others are extremely robotic. Just weird. The food use to be so much better, now it's just like any other fast food joint. At least the place is clean regardless of the tiny restrooms. You need bigger restrooms because some people are larger. I've watched 300 pound individuals struggle. And the ventilation in the restrooms could use some improvement. Come on, there are seats right outside that area and some of these people go back to take a #2 and blow-up the toilet. I wouldn't use religion to push a restaurant as Jesus would not be happy with this place.

Yelp
OMG, my husband just happened to be in Canton to make a delivery and stopped at Dairy Palace and called me and asked if I wanted to bring me something. I checked out the menu and had him bring me a 1/3 pound burger with cheese and everything and fried mushrooms. Mind you, I live in Tyler and it is a 45 minute drive. He finally gets home and I am starving! I tried the burger and it is delicious. I would have to say it was the best burger I have ever had. The meat was perfectly flavored and cooked. The mushrooms were wonderful too. I may have to move to Canton!

Yelp
My parents have been stopping off at the Dairy Palace for 30 years and it didn't disappoint. Full of locals and passersby ready for a good burger. We opted for beef beef burgers but those on the more adventurous side could go for game. I love that they have a 1/5 lb burger. Just right for me! If you have an appetite, go for the 1/2 pounder! From the rest of the family - Fried okra was the bomb. Pickle chips a little over-fried, fajita burrito was yummmy, omelet and country breakfast are also recommended (Grandpa says nice large eggs, not dinky restaurant eggs). Go.

Yelp
We have visited this dairy Palace for over 10 years and they continue to impress! Friendly employees, delicious food and prompt service... Available 24 hours a day! The best burger and onion rings ever. It's the perfect quick stop if you are traveling on I 20... Do not miss it! We love the vegetarian options, especially the veggie burger and vegan chicken strips! What a treat !
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Gets superrrrr busy here but the food always comes out quick and fresh. The place has nice decorations but looks a bit dated. Solid spot if you're traveling via I-20, not far off the freeway.

Dennis C.

Yelp
Been twice. Gave it another chance after first disaster. Second time was for breakfast, puddle of grease on my plate. I never ate any of it. Pretty poor presentation. Old coagulated gravy, eggs greasy beyond what should be served.
google avatar

Mone C.

Yelp
I went in and placed our order on 3/16/2024 at 5:58pm At 6:38 I went to the counter and asked about my order. They said it's coming. All other customers that sat down behind us had received their order, ate and had left. The 2nd round of customers that came in had received their food and were eating when I asked for a refund after 1hour of waiting. New to the area and will never go into Dairy Palace again. I'm sorry, they have to do better.
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
The best burgers, hands down. Bison, hog, salmon, turkey, duck, chicken, and just plain beef burgers. And then there are the fries and the fried green beans! Oh my. And for dessert, Blue Bell ice cream!!

Yelp
If you're driving through Canton, TX and see the Dairy Palace billboard with a tantalizing banana split, take the hint and pull in! My family and I did just that and we were happy with our decision. Although we did have a bit of a challenge finding a spot to park our dually truck in the small and cramped parking lot (half of which was for compact cars only), we were greeted with a menu full of delicious options. Burgers, sandwiches, wraps, breakfast items, barbecue - you name it, they had it. The exotic burger menu looked particularly interesting, but we ultimately opted for the brisket sandwich, bacon burgers, and chicken rings. As we waited for our food at a cozy booth, we couldn't help but notice the restaurant's love for the State Fair. Decorated with pictures of award-winning animals from 2013 and playing slideshows of the 2016 fair on their TVs, Dairy Palace definitely has a deep connection to this annual event. When our food arrived, my wife's brisket sandwich was flavorful but a bit dried out, possibly from sitting out for too long. The bacon burgers were massive and delicious, but we ended up taking most of them home as leftovers. I ordered the double bacon burger with jalapenos and found it to be a decent backyard burger, with each bite packed with extra spicy jalapenos. The chalupa was just as good as expected, but the fried mushrooms seemed to have been left in the fryer for too long and needed fresher oil. Our youngest enjoyed the chicken rings and fries, and we finished off our meal with a sweet treat from their ice cream bar. The Blue Bell ice cream was a hit, with the supreme banana split stealing the show. Despite a few minor hiccups, we would definitely give Dairy Palace another shot and recommend it to others passing through Canton. With a menu that has something for everyone and a cozy atmosphere, it's definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
After a long day at the First Monday Trade Days, we couldn't pass up trying the local favorite: Dairy Palace. Boasting dozens of flavors of blue bell ice cream, this is a great spot if you've been traveling outside of Texas for too long and need your blue bell fix. Upon arrival, there were 2 lines moving swiftly worth walk up orders, plus a line of cars wrapped around the drive thru. Given the extensive menu, it was hard to choose - thankfully our server couldn't have been more helpful. She guided us deftly though choices on burgers, fries and milkshakes, adding helpful hints like "cream gravy goes so well with the French fries." We were in good hands. Sadly, they're facing the same staffing shortages we see around the country - bussing tables hadn't quite caught up to the busy dining room, but we're not afraid to roll up our sleeves and get to cleaning. Once we cleared a booth, our food arrived rather swiftly ~20 minutes. It was piping hot and we dove right in - cheeseburger and fries for me, 'cause I'm a purist. Both were delicious, hot off the grill, and paired well with my chocolate milkshake. The food and drinks are solid, and what you'd expect from a burger joint, with excellent service at the front of house - they just have a bit of trouble keeping up, which during Trade Days weekends is understandable. Cheers!

Yelp
Best burgers ever! Friendly staff! Quick service and great prices! Love the drive in vibe here! Will be back!

Yelp
So the wife and I stopped here on our way home she had a single I had a double bacon cheeseburger. Flavor throughout the burger it was very good and for my wife to say it that means a lot. Down side is they do not have combos so everything is separate, but everything is very good from the fries to the fried mushrooms, they also have a little Tex mex menu and serve ice cream as well. We were met with a smile, the service was nice at the counter. The place had a small town feel and they get packed. Nice little jewel of a place. Didn't get pics was too hungry, but delicious, couldn't finish the double and my side the burger was big. For you men out there that love game meats they also have elk venison hog etc burgers.
google avatar

Zachary D.

Yelp
Met my wife here. Buffalo burger is awesome. All the burgers are amazing. Can't go wrong with anything. Ice cream is great, get a cone.
google avatar

Nikki T.

Yelp
It's a great burger joint with exotic meats to try, such as bison, fish, etc. They also have ice cream too. It's a great place to stop by on your way. They also have a EV charger so you can charge your car while getting some burger or ice cream for a stop on your way. Note that I left my jacket here one time, called them later the same day, they said they found it in the employee back room. But I'm from out of town so when I came back a few days later to get it, they said no one even claimed that they had found it before. I think they have employees turnover, or that someone is not honest and took it from the locker room.

stephanie c.

Yelp
Every thing was great. Price, food service and atmosphere. Great burger, fries crisp aand thick and free refills in tea.
google avatar

Matthew B.

Yelp
This is a burger joint. If you are coming here for anything other than a burger I wouldn't expect much. Then again I don't know why you would order Cod here LOL (past reviewer). Burgers are fantastic and the service is always very nice and helpful. Perfect little burger joint. DONT GET FISH IN EAST TEXAS PEOPLE CMON NOW.

Yelp
After driving from Cali back to Texas, I found this place on my yep, Yelp search in the vicinity. You can't go wrong with a heavy burger to top off a long drive, knowing your going home to rest... umm Maybe... First off the parking lot was small so be ware. We walked in around lunch 1:15ish to a line full of folks ready to order a classic exotic burger, sandwich,, country breakfasts, menus for seniors and for kids too, and even Tex-Mex favorites. Oh and can't forget ice cream. World famous since 1984. I was really choosing, and opted for the Texas sunrise. It woke me up, and put me to sleep hours later. I can say, it was nice. Hubs said, the Bison burger was official This place is cool. I just can't have people walk n, standing in line watching me eat. The tables are literally surrounding where people wait to order the food. No big deal, during a less busy time. Trust, during my travels I'll be back for a lick of ice cream to complete my experience.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
This is a great stop for a diner type meal made fresh to order. There are multiple meat burger selections like bison, duck, and venison, but I wasn't feeling so adventurous so I just got a burger. It had an egg, hash browns, and bacon and was delicious. The chicken fried steak and fries was decent but a little bland and the onion rings were over cooked to the point where they were inedible. I would definitely try this place again because of the service and the burger, but I'd steer away from non-burger items.
google avatar

Kristi C F.

Yelp
This place was amazing. Very versatile. Many different meat choices along with a variety of other options. They also support Jesus which is a in my book! The hamburger was the perfect size for me and well made. My aunt ordered a hot dog and thoroughly enjoyed it. Her only comment was that they did not have sauerkraut. Even my dog got a nice Turkey burger. Overall we were very happy and will come back if we are in the area again.

Yelp
Good burgers & tots! Stopped by on the way home from the First Monday Trade days. Cool place! Regular burgers & some exotic meats too! I had an elk burger & perfectly cooked tots & they were great! The shakes looked pretty good too. Good option after a long day of shopping!

D D.

Yelp
Has always had great food and friendly service It's a must stop when visiting first Monday or passing through going east on 20.

Zade B.

Yelp
Food terrible there is no flavor the chips for the Frito chili pie were stale and soggy by the time we got our food. The service was terrible they have no emotion and the employees probably hate their job here. There is a lot of table shoved into a tiny building. If I were you I would void from eating here.
google avatar

Ray F.

Yelp
Our stomachs were loudly protesting our decision to not eat before we got on the road! To say they were growling was a major understatement! So we pulled off the highway to grab a bite at a big national fast food chain. As we drove up to the chain location, the line was around the building! That was a bad idea! Then, I saw this place. It had a lot of cars around it, but the drive through line was short. The menu board was easy to read and we ordered a couple of items. Super friendly help while ordering and again at the window. The food was ready pretty quickly and it smelled wonderful! I ordered the breakfast sandwich and first bite was Heavenly! My grumbling tummy was SILENCED! My taste buds were giggling with delight! Seriously, really good flavors and the egg was the star! Price was very reasonable as were the portion sizes. EXCELLENT decision to come here!

Ari D.

Yelp
Delicious food, great service and awesome ambiance! The ice cream is fabulous! Love it!

Brian H.

Yelp
Drove from arhens after seeing the promotion on the Texas Bucket List. My wife and I ordered the burgers. The buns were dry, the meat was cold and lacked seasoning. The onion rings were soggy and not crispy. For all the hype, it was very disappointing.
google avatar

Bo H.

Yelp
Any time I'm driving to Odessa I stop here and get the Texas sunrise burger it is 10/10 every time. And the employees remember me by name it's one of those stops that have that small town feel.
google avatar

Stacie A.

Yelp
Stopped through at the insistence of my friend on a recent trip to Canton. Why did I listen to her?!?! Everything was just alright. Nothing really stand-out although the burgers are fresh and they are open 24 hours. I think people have a nostalgic attachment to this place. I don't but if you do, have at it. If you dont, keep it moving.
google avatar

Jennie M.

Yelp
Cute local place. The favorite for me is the steak fingers and country gravy with fries. I have a few things there like the ultimate nachos and bacon cheeseburger, fried pickles and split a brownie Al la mode too. It is all good. The place was always busy but able to get us in and out every time promptly.

Larry L.

Yelp
Ok dairy palace I've been a loyal customer for years, Sunday went and got a burger , and it wasn't even hot, Today ( Monday ) thought I'd give you another shot, Went inside , not even a hot burger and the fries were stale, Normally I'd take it back to the counter but I was hungry...... yall need to fix this issue and do better, instead of pushing God down peoples throat, and work on your food preparation and maybe I will come back!!!!! Severely disappointed, Yall were so great when you opened up in 1984.... And i understand food prices have gone up , but no reason for cold food and expensive prices .... Almost $7.00 for just a burger..... yall need to work on some of your issues and some loyal customers might come back!!!!!
google avatar

Vonn M.

Yelp
Very cranky desert counter attendant. Refused to give me my receipt. Just crumpled it up and said it didn't print. Don't let one bad apple spoil the whole batch.
google avatar

Hawn E.

Yelp
Wow so many choices in burgers. Beside your regular, they have exotic burgers like Bison, Elk, Duck, Turkey, Venison and Spam to name a few. Also serve breakfast burger called the Texas Sunrise and quesadilla burgers. If you want a burger any way, this place is the burger haven. Of course they have ice cream. Wouldn't be called the Dairy Palace for nothing. They even make their own fruit pies from peach, cherry to apricots. I had the peach pie and bison burger. Which was a hard decision given all the plethora of choices. Bison burger was just right. Didn't feel heavy but satisfied. Definitely a great place to stop.

Anna S.

Yelp
Just good burgers. A bit expensive but the BBQ burger is nite than enough for w adults..2 people.. Most of the burgers are bug enough to split.. but it is worth it. I have my once a month visit lol

Yelp
Meal: chicken fried steak with gravy and eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits and an OJ The good: the eggs and the gravy were awesome! Ordered my eggs over easy and they were perfect. The gravy consistency was spot on. The bad: the OJ, of all things. Very watered down and not good at all. The hashbrowns were average and greasy. The CFS itself had a very weird batter on it (see photo) The ugly: a dated interior, but clean and functional. Reminded me of a Waffle House. Overall, I would not recommend this as a breakfast stop, even not knowing what else is in Canton. Friendly staff and a clean restaurant could not overcome mediocre food.

Addi H.

Yelp
My mom and I were traveling through Canton and decided to stop by Dairy Palace for some burgers. While we did not eat inside, the drive-thru service was fast and friendly! We ordered two 1/3 burgers and shared curly fries. It was perfect and just right for what we were craving! The burgers and buns tasted homemade + the curly fries were fully cooked and crisp! The only "suggestion" I would have is to ask for extra ketchup or else you will be sharing three small packets! Other than that, this restaurant is awesome! Must give it a try!

Paul S.

Yelp
A fun tradition. Carnival type food, that's pretty good. Don't expect it to be hot, though. Fun ice cream choices.

Scott J.

Yelp
Odd place--the walls are adorned by dozens of pictures of people standing beside goats!! There are also two monitors that scroll similar images... However, the ice cream is good. But bring your wallet--its $5 for a small sundae in a four once cup. Getting drink refills is a challenge because the fountain is behind the counter.
google avatar

Beth M.

Yelp
We've seen the sign on I-20 for 4 years and always said "we should stop there sometime!" Yesterday was the day and now I wish we had made it a point to stop sooner. Delicious burgers, curly fries were excellent, although the regular fries were kind of a soggy bummer. Line was long to order, although moved fairly quickly. They have a drive thru, but with made-to-order food that is worth the wait, that might not be a quick in and out. Definitely be back soon!
google avatar

Keisha B.

Yelp
Home cooking at its best. The burgers are delicious and so big. OMG, the steak fingers are the best steak fingers I have ever had. This place is amazing and I will return.
