If you're driving through Canton, TX and see the Dairy Palace billboard with a tantalizing banana split, take the hint and pull in! My family and I did just that and we were happy with our decision.
Although we did have a bit of a challenge finding a spot to park our dually truck in the small and cramped parking lot (half of which was for compact cars only), we were greeted with a menu full of delicious options. Burgers, sandwiches, wraps, breakfast items, barbecue - you name it, they had it. The exotic burger menu looked particularly interesting, but we ultimately opted for the brisket sandwich, bacon burgers, and chicken rings.
As we waited for our food at a cozy booth, we couldn't help but notice the restaurant's love for the State Fair. Decorated with pictures of award-winning animals from 2013 and playing slideshows of the 2016 fair on their TVs, Dairy Palace definitely has a deep connection to this annual event.
When our food arrived, my wife's brisket sandwich was flavorful but a bit dried out, possibly from sitting out for too long. The bacon burgers were massive and delicious, but we ended up taking most of them home as leftovers. I ordered the double bacon burger with jalapenos and found it to be a decent backyard burger, with each bite packed with extra spicy jalapenos. The chalupa was just as good as expected, but the fried mushrooms seemed to have been left in the fryer for too long and needed fresher oil.
Our youngest enjoyed the chicken rings and fries, and we finished off our meal with a sweet treat from their ice cream bar. The Blue Bell ice cream was a hit, with the supreme banana split stealing the show.
Despite a few minor hiccups, we would definitely give Dairy Palace another shot and recommend it to others passing through Canton. With a menu that has something for everyone and a cozy atmosphere, it's definitely worth a visit.
