The Worst Parts of Working in a Restaurant - Eater

"I worked at a seasonal Dairy Queen in Iowa when I was a teenager. Every summer, on the hottest, muggiest days of the year, the ice milk machine would overheat." - Jaya Saxena

Google
Horrible costume service. They made blizzard wrong and when I returned to have it made correctly she argued with me that it was right. They refused a refund but offered to remake and it was still wrong. That definitely is not a Reese piece’s blizzard for the 2nd time 😡

Georgia Hurd

Google
My husband & I ordered a large blizzard. They were both more like between a shake and a malt. He got tropical which had mostly nuts and about 3 slices of bananas. I got a chocolate covered strawberry. I got 1 strawberry. Worst blizzards we have ever had. Service sucked. Should have paid us the 16 dollars instead of us paying for them. They were horrible.

Google
This is one of the worst experiences I’ve had with this Dairy Queen. My chicken was undercooked and cold. My fries were soggy. It was like my box had been sitting there waiting for somebody to order that mail like somebody had made it by mistake and they were hoping somebody would order it so they didn’t have to get rid of it. I couldn’t even eat it. I had to Throw it away and get something else for dinner it was that bad. I’ve eaten chicken strips from this. Dairy Queen. Couldn’t even tell you how many times and they’ve never been this bad. I’m severely disappointed. be going back for a while if at all ever for chicken strips looks like canes here I come.

Google
I picked a rootbeer float at this location. I went inside and was promply greated by a gentleman behind the counter. While briefly waiting for my order, the owner/manager came and was jumping into work before the door closed behind her. The facility was clean and had a fresh aroma to it. I will return to this location to eat.

Jeff Burgfechtel

Google
Oh my word, I have never seen a chicken sandwich at a fast food restaurant that was this exceptional. The size of the chicken breast is double the size of the bun! What a nice change from most places where you can’t find the chicken under the bun! I learned that this Dairy Queen is independently owned, and so they can buy higher quality meats, and chickens and the food quality definitely shows! Outstanding food and service! Definitely 10 stars if an option.

Lani Johnson

Google
Very negative workers and the drive way is not working and neither does the card machine. Appears to be the usual for this location. Close and let a better establishment take place and prosper.

Google
Food is always delicious!!! Ice cream is always so good! They made my daughter’s first birthday cake! They didn’t have anything in their book I liked so they asked if there was anything specific I wanted so I told them Care Bears and they did an amazing job!! I highly recommend them! Best Dq in town

Krystle Pacheco

Google
Ordered a blizzard cake and did not get what pictured showed it to be. When I asked why they said they are independently ran. I would have taking my business else where to get what I thought I was ordering.

Yelp
This Dairy Queen location has dedicated parking for indoor or outdoor seating options, and drive-through if you're on the run. We were pleasantly greeted and quickly served. The folks at the counter were able to accommodate a couple of tweaks to our order rather easily. The dining room was neat and tidy and be able to find a seat without a problem. The Dairy Queen is pretty much your standard design that you would find with a standard menu. Good ice cream at a good price for a nice afternoon break and you're not counting calories too carefully - LOL. No pictures of my ice cream today as we ate them too quickly. Stop in and have some ice cream!

Yelp
Drive thru is small and tight cornered! Trucks beware. $16 for 2 medium blizzards. Asked if they had the seasonal dipped strawberry cheesecake, they said they did. Pretty sure I just got regular strawberry cheesecake, no chocolate pieces. I paid for a Reese's blizzard add brownie bites. NO BROWNIE BITES. He said it tasted weird too. A bunch of kids working, but paid for the extras and didn't get them. Just drive to a real DQ, not this franchise one !!!
google avatar

Olyvia K.

Yelp
Over $15 for a large shake and a medium blizzard... I cannot believe that! Service was fast due to no line.

Houston M.

Yelp
Love it here.Great service and the kids were so nice. i loved sitting outside on the patio while eating my ice cream. don't get me started on the inside, the new tables and seats look great!

A M.

Yelp
I literally made a Yelp account to write this review. Very disappointing, old, and unkept building. Location does not use the DQ app, so no deals or points are applicable. Drive thru area is EXTREMELY tight and hard to maneuver with any vehicle. The Blizzards were not made to the typical DQ standard (mix-ins were clearly off-brand candies) and the ice cream itself was grainy.

Yelp
Thought I'd take the time to give this DQ the props it deserves. We have not been since the beginning of Covid, and stopped in to mark the "last night of summer," and one-time tradition of ours. We were greeted warmly, just as I remembered and our food was prepared exceptionally well; the fries seemed to have been cooked just for us. The dining room is still marked for social distancing and was extremely clean, as were the bathrooms. The drive through seemed to be moving along at a swift pace and I was impressed by the care that was so evident - even the ice cream cake freezer was well-stocked. I ate my blizzard too fast for a photo - but please note they do have krunch kote :)

Sean B.

Yelp
they made the food shity and it took like 30 minutes for ice cream and a snake itz was nasty
google avatar

Sara M.

Yelp
Locally owned. True Dairy Queen with made to order food. Can't go wrong with the ice cream either. Great to support local small businesses.

Miguel C.

Yelp
Chicken strips were garbage! Looked liked they have been fried, sat forever and fried again. The batter was raw but somehow burned. The burgers tasted bland and no flavor what so ever! I've been to a handful of Dairy Queen's and expect the same good quality of food but this location was awful!
google avatar

Bobby A.

Yelp
This is a hidden gem in Council Bluffs IA! Their food is amazing; their fries are batter dipped; and their pork tenderloin sandwich is local Iowa pork hand breaded each day (I spoke to the cook and saw for myself)! I've had their burgers and sweet treats and well and everything is legit perfect. Go here and sit outside enjoy the traffic and people watching and have a great meal!

Dave P.

Yelp
Excellent service and great food . If you are hungry for a great hot dog or chicken sandwich this is your best fast food option.

Jeron M.

Yelp
I came to eat here with my wife and I was super impressed. We had the tenderloin sandwich with fries and an Oreo Blizzard and it was delicious! The sandwich was HUGE and just the right temperature and texture! The Blizzard was a classic treat and a great way to finish the meal! Nothing quite beats the taste of a good Blizzard! The service was fast and friendly and we will definitely come back! Highly recommend!

Kaden S.

Yelp
The food was immaculate and the service was incredible. The employee that helped me was kind and very helpful. Best Dairy Queen I have ever been too!
google avatar

Heidi C.

Yelp
I love the old-time diner feel of this location and the hot food was great! We ordered desserts, which they either didn't make correctly or give the correct portions. We ordered two sundaes made with chocolate ice cream and were given vanilla with chocolate sauce. Our kids chose a dish of ice cream with their kids' meals. I ordered a medium cup - they got twice as much as I did! They still have a plexiglass protector above their register, which also happens to be next to a very loud cooler, so it was impossible to hear. Burger = great. Medium amount of ice cream = boo.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
This wasn't the best DQ I've been to but it also wasn't the worst. I needed a cool treat after helping some friends move. The blizzard seemed more liquidy than normal and I've definitely had better Reese's blizzards. I will say that the drive thru is a little strange. You have to snake through the parking lot with curbs on both sides and the restaurant on one side and the parking lot on the other, so the flow isn't what I'm used to
google avatar

Phil E.

Yelp
Thanks Charles... I bet you thought It was funny to throw the fries in there sideways followed by loading the bag with the biggest handful of katchup packets... that I specially asked not to have!! This is ridiculous. Charles you should stick to mopping floors and let the people that take the order deal with customers... I'm about to take this garbage back!
google avatar

Bells G.

Yelp
Well, I won't be back here. Ordered a $5 meal at 12:41, with one peraon having ordered before me. Took nearly 20 minutes to get my food, by which time I was expecting to walk up and ask for my money back for the wait. When the food came out, the marinara sauce for the mozzarella sticks shows a date of 8/20/19...thirteen days ago. And their explanation is that this is the date they open the can. So if that's almost two weeks old, how old os the rest of the food?
google avatar

Celeste R.

Yelp
There was a booger on the lid of one of our shakes. The girl at the window/taking orders was unnecessarily rude. But mostly the booger thing.
google avatar

Curtis F.

Yelp
This Dairy Queen may have been the worst experience I have ever had at a fast food restaurant. There was one car in line and it took 30+ minutes to get our food. Unbelievable.

Sarah D.

Yelp
The ice cream is fine, but they overfill the Blizzards. Once you take the lid off, the ice cream overflows and gets absolutely everywhere. These Blizzards are much too thin.

Tyler V.

Yelp
Paid $3.95 for a medium sundae. The portions are extremely small, smaller than any other DQ I've been to. Tried to use a DQ mobile app coupon, but was told they don't accept them. Service was less than impressive, when we pulled up we sat at the pay window while 3 employees ignored us for a few minutes, one notably staring at us through the window. With all the other options out there, I definitely wouldn't recommend this business.
google avatar

Anicca H.

Yelp
This place has never NOT disappointed me. Whether it's a 15 minute wait, closing 20 min before close time, or poor quality food/dessert and high prices it's always been a frustrating experience. At least their consistent.
google avatar

Carma S.

Yelp
This place smells of sewage. The dining area is unclean and staff are extremely slow at taking orders. The food looked and tasted good though

Tomas D.

Yelp
Specifically do not go to this Dairy Queen. Their ice cream has a very odd taste to it compared to the Lake Manawa or Mall of the Bluffs locations. Given that this is an independent franchise that doesn't take DQ gift cards and charges 50cents to use a debit/credit card, you know they are cutting corners in the name of penny pinching and it shows.

Mary M.

Yelp
Only one of the workers was wearing a mask, the other two who were preparing the ice cream were not wearing masks or gloves. I would have left if that was possible. This is also not actually a "Dairy Queen," so they don't have any of the monthly blizzard flavors. You have to pay a .49 cent fee to use a card here, and they don't accept gift cards or checks. I don't even know how they are allowed to call themselves a Dairy Queen. Go to Sonic across the street for better ice cream.
google avatar

Kurt S.

Yelp
My wife and I went to this Dairy Queen after grabbing a bite to eat in Omaha last night. Right when you walk into this DQ, you get a huge whiff of vomit or dirty dish rags or something. It was just awful. We go up to order and my wife ordered a twist cone; their twist part of the ice cream machine isn't working, so she just got layers of vanilla and chocolate ice cream. I go to pay with my credit card, and she said that there is a 50 cent charge to use a card. That is ridiculous. Just that alone will make me never come back to this place. What a joke. After we walk out of DQ, my wife said that her chocolate ice cream in her cone tasted like chemicals. We take it back up and they make her a vanilla one and that tasted good. If not for my wife, I probably won't ever come back here.

Jade S.

Yelp
Worked here when I was 15 and it was always super fun years ago, the people were fun. We did get a lot of complaints even back then, as it is a privately owned location and a lot of things are not up to par/expectation as the next DQ would be. It's been a slow but steady slope down hill for so long. Workers are now super rude and have no people skills. So much turn over. My boyfriend went in for two malts one strawberry one chocolate. Extremely simple!! Got two strawberry instead and drove back when I realized, Neither of us were upset it was no big deal & I understand things happen, and she gave my boyfriend a hard time about it for no reason. I'll never understand why people work in a customer service based job where you constantly interact with people when they can't even be decent. It's not hard to fake a smile and provide decent service instead of treating people like a burden when it's you that made the mistake anyways. ‍

Peter M.

Yelp
Really the worst customer service I've ever seen. I never leave reviews but felt like I needed to. I really hope the owner sees this so they can address this as they would not give me contact information. First, when pulling up to the drive through i was asked to wait, which is understandable. Then after being told they were ready was told told to wait mid conversation. After that they would not accept a dairy queen gift card I asked them twice why they would not accept it. They just told me that they didn't accept it like I was supposed to understand why. Finally I asked and they said because they are 'privately owned.' I was interrupted frequently and the employee was rude. In addition to that they were not busy at all, had no customers inside, and took a super long time to do everything. Finally, the employee did not identify which item was which when they handed it to me then said goodbye and acted confused when I asked them which item was which. Later I called the store and asked for the supervisor and told them about my experience. The supervisor was very rude and did not care one bit. I tried to explained to the supervisor that there customer service was atrocious and asked for contact information for the owner. She said she could not give to me and said she could take down my name and number and have someone contact me. I declined because I don't believe they would have passed on the information. This is a place to avoid Staff needs training in customer service

Corrine M.

Yelp
Just waited 15 minutes at the drive thru and no one took our order! We left! She came on the intercom said I'll be right with u ASAP when pulled up and never came back .

Melissa W.

Yelp
If you want to find the worlds best DQ search no more it's truly amazing wow never met a nicer owner who checked and made sure things were good plus it's squeaky clean whoever works there has lots of elbow grease that was an exceptional place to stop

James W.

Yelp
It's a great place to stop and get some of your ice cream is cravings best Dairy Queen I've ever been to and I love Dairy Queen. Service was amazing and whoever works there has some elbow grease that place use to be a little dirty but they have picked up there act if your in there at the right time the owner is a great guy.
google avatar

Jillian K.

Yelp
Had a large order and thought that my giftcards will be awesome! Come to find out they dont except giftcards at this location!!! Are you kidding me!! I will be contacting someone in higher food chain!! Fraud!!!
google avatar

Cheri B.

Yelp
Order their moo-lattee, any flavor. I chose caramel. I dare you! Just don't expect your money back when you're terribly disappointed. Zero taste of coffee. The taste was like orange sherbet almost. But, they don't have that kind of ice cream. She tasted it and said..."this is how they normally taste" I was beyond shocked. I rarely stray from Denison's DQ, but their moolatte's along with any other latte form of any kind from anywhere I've ever known tastes like coffee....all I tasted was orangey caramel.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
Went and grabbed a twist cone with sprinkles after dinner one night. Walking into the facility around 8:30 at night and it smelled like vomit. It was overwhelming and I couldn't imagine anyone eating inside the facility with it smelling like that. We ordered and paid. There was a 50 cent charge to pay with a credit card which I thought was a little ridiculous for a major food chain to be going. We got my cone and left. As I started to eat it in the car, it was apparent that something was wrong with the chocolate ice cream. It tasted like chemicals and burned my tongue as f it had carbonation in it. I went back in and she remade it no problem and said (and i quote) "we don't know something is wrong with the ice cream at the end of the night unless someone tells us." I would not be telling people this. They should a system in place to say whether or not the ice cream has gone "bad."
google avatar

Keith M.

Yelp
Worst location in town. I never write bad reviews but this location de serves it just for their management style. The y will nickel and dime you for everything. Credit card fee. Water cup fee. I'm sure there are others. The only way to make this location worth it is by grabbing a deal through the newspaper's daily deal site.
google avatar

Charlotte B.

Yelp
Waited in line for almost 30 minutes and they over charged my card for almost 2 bucks
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
Terrible service, terrible food just don't go here. They need to be turned over to corporate for giving the franchises a bad name
google avatar

Jeff H.

Yelp
I believe I have found THE slowest Dairy Queen on the planet - and that's quite an accomplishment! 15 minutes to get a Blizzard at the Drive-Thru? I won't be making that mistake again.
google avatar

Jesse F.

Yelp
Way understaffed for a hot, late July afternoon. If you go in prepare to wait because for some reason, every car in the drive thru is prioritized over the dining room. Then, once you food is prepared listen closely because they will attempt to yell your order out across the entire dining area. I will never visit this location again.

Ben R.

Yelp
We waited in the drive thru line for about 30 minuets at least with not that many cars ahead of us. The workers (one teenage boy with blonde hair) took quite a long time to take our order at the speaker. Once we left the drive thru we started to eat our ice cream and realized, it was not the right size and neither blizzards were what we ordered. At that point going back was a waste of time. Overall this was a very disappointing experience, I would strongly advise against visiting this Dairy Queen unless there is a much needed change in staff.

Dylan C.

Yelp
Very slow service, employees are not friendly. They do not accept coupons or participate in DQ promotions.

Mike P.

Yelp
Don't go to this location but instead take a few extra minutes and go to one of the other locations in the area! My list is long but want to fair. Staff was nice and I think they do their best with a store that appears not to get much of an investment. I ordered 4 Blizzards on August 4th which should have cost me $22.38 however my credit card statement says I spent $222.38. The store does not provide copies of credit card receipts according to my credit card company so it was expensive night of ice cream! I will survive without the $200 tha5 I was overcharged but at least take the extra money and update and clean the store please!
google avatar

Jeff R.

Yelp
Glue on the cone and the inner place was very warm... Good Ice Cream though for a hot day!!!! Get the air fixed in the building...Then we will try it again !!!
google avatar

Jamee S.

Yelp
My family went to this Dairy Queen Monday evening 7/18/16. There were 5 of us.... My husband, my 13 yr old, 7 yr old, 3 yr old & myself. First off, the place was cramped, dark, dirty & they had old menu boards on the menu that were faded so bad that the ice cream pictures looked blue. They had many items on the menu board that they did not offer like mini blizzards.... which is what we ordered. The chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard looked as if it were made from chocolate ice cream on the menu, which is what 4 out of the 5 of us ordered. When we got the first couple, we realized this & told them that our daughter was expecting Chocolate ice cream. They didn't really care, but they did add more chocolate to the blizzard. It looked nothing like the picture. When we were leaving my husband went to the restroom to wash his hands & he took our 3 yr old with him. He said that the restroom was disgusting. He said that the toilet was so bad that he wouldn't have let our son use it if he needed to. This is the 2nd time that I have gone to this DQ & we will never go back!

Glenn F.

Yelp
Insane, stay away! 44 minutes to order and get a sandwich and soda. Only three cars in line total and 1 person in lobby. Charge 49 cents to use a debit card or cc. When you pull into drive through and wait 10 minutes with five at speaker, you are trapped so can't drive away due to set up. I agree with other posting, the franchise rights should be taken away by corporate.

Heidi B.

Yelp
Every single time I go here they give me melted ice cream. I would drive out of my way to go to a different Dairy Queen.
google avatar

Cindy P.

Yelp
Was good love the peppermint baby blizzard and love the dairy queen out by Walmart so much better than Broadway they are not friendly.
google avatar

Andrea J.

Yelp
This Dairy Queen refuses to take their own gift cards. Which is crazy, but I was reading the sign which says they are privately owned. Maybe that is why it is so dirty, and their parking lot will tear up your car if you go through the drive thru. All I was willing to over look but then this chic comes up and rudely said we are privately owned as if I was illiterate. I will find any other Dairy Queen and never go to this location.
