Where to Find Fantastic Asian Snacks in San Francisco - Eater SF

"As the biggest dollar store in Japantown, Daiso offers all your classic Asian snacks (i.e. Hello Panda, Hi-Chew, and Pocky) and also offers Chinese and Japanese drinks that are hard to come by. Iced Genmaicha tea, coffee jelly drinks, mango aloe vera juice, milk tea, Japanese soda, and Calpico (a light, somewhat milky Japanese drink) are all on offer." - Maya Wong, Janelle Bitker, Ellen Fort

Google
Crazy variety of ingenious gadgets, from office supplies to craft, tech, cooking and gardening. Per item price for most things has just risen to $2.25. if you see something you like, buy it. Stock changes frequently and some things don't come back once they're gone. Many items cost more than the base price, but they are clearly marked and still bargains.m

Google
This Japanese store is just like the American version of The Dollar Stores, but sell cooler and some cuties stuffs. Things are cheap and most are cheaply made. They sell foods, snacks, kitchen supplies, cute stuffed animals, chair leg socks😄, school supplies and plenty of other items too. Much stop by and check them out if you haven’t before.

Google
Daiso was a heavenly experience. I was unsure whether or not to go but my good friend convinced me to go in. Inside I found aisles and aisles of treasures and trinkets. The inside of Daiso was bustling with activity and people. We ended up buying a few snacks but everything was worth buying if I could. 10/10 would visit again.

Google
Best place to shop for home basics in the city. A ton of organization products and pretty good basic kitchenware. Have a clear list of house projects you want to solve as the choice can be overwhelming. Beats The Container Store in many cases, but not all.

Google
Amazing merchandise- huge improvement over the last few years. A must see. Friendly staff and special shout out to Sammy for being pro active and on it!

Google
Very clean, up to standards with other Daiso chains. Lots of products that are thoughtful and creative for around the home use and at affordable prices. The price guide is clearly marked around the store to help you determine the price of any items. Gets plenty of foot traffic being part of the center of Japantown.

Google
Anytime in San Francisco I pop by Daiso to stock up on japanese bowls, so good in price and if you pick carefully those made in Japan they are a true bargain for less than 2$ also a great place to buy Japanese paper and Japanese design cello tape

Google
Wonderful daiso, and quite large in comparison to other locations I have visited in northern California. Very clean, spacious and easy to keep 6ft away while perusing the long aisles. Store was very neat and tidy, cleaning witnessed in multiple areas during my visit. A lot of items that were a surprise to me on the shelf as I would have needed to travel to 2 or even 3 different daiso locations to find all the items. Stationery and crafts were large full aisles and a lot of options presented (what I normally check out). Staff was quick to help me find items and checkout was very efficient. Definitely visit any time I am in the downtown area.

Yelp
PRICES INCREASED TO $2.25 PER ITEM now, citing tariffs, effective June 2025! SAD face -- no actually, crying face There was no sign or warning and the cashier didn't even tell me, just ringing me up like normal. Would've really appreciated a sign at the entrance or some sort of announcement before I got to check out. Person behind me said the same thing. I pickup many unnecessary things, because I like shopping! It's a thrill. But at the higher price point, some items are just not worth it or I can get them better price elsewhere, especially if I don't need it. Store's Really fun to browse! All kinds of knick knacks I don't need. To buy or not to buy. This store is big, although some aisles tight so hard to squeeze by if there are already more than 2 people there in that aisle.

Yelp
Happy Mother's Day. Quality/Quantity - My wife's favorite shop here in J-Town. And since it is Mother's Day, she gets what she wants. Well I try to ALWAYS give her what she wants, lol. She can spend hours here! I even offered to help her shop, but she prefers to just browse EVERY aisle. Such joy for her. Where is the closest bar...? Just joking. Atmosphere - One of the larger Daiso, especially in the city. In a city where real estate is very expensive and limited. Service - Self service. Fast check out. One line, but many cashiers. Price - See pictures. This used to be a "dollar" store, but now priced as marked. Well, you have to look at the Yen to $ conversion; see charts. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1977 and with 5,500+ worldwide locations.

Yelp
The Daiso in San Francisco Japantown (West Mall) is one of the largest Daisos I've been to, and it's packed with all sorts of affordable finds. They often put holiday decorations on sale after the season ends, which is nice if you want to stock up for next year. I personally enjoy browsing their plates and kitchenware section--lots of cute and functional items. However, the store layout feels a bit scattered, making it less intuitive to navigate. It also gets crowded on weekends, which can make shopping a bit cramped. It's easy to get tempted into buying a lot here, but as expected, the quality aligns with the price. Service was good--I got help finding what I needed, and the cashier was efficient. Overall, this Daiso is worth visiting and browsing around if your ever in the SF Japan Town area.

Yelp
I'm seeing a lot of comments about long lines at this Diaso but I'm not seeing the long lines. If you go in the middle of a holiday weekend (especially) or any weekend you will see lines. But if you go at nine or ten AM during the week, you will have the place to yourself! And parking at the meters is 30 minutes for a quarter. I love the crafty things best - washi tapes, glue, masking tapes, pretty envelopes and stationery', clear bags..... the list goes on and on..... Japanese snacks and drinks, as someone else mentioned, are fun to try too. And for kids -- they can pick out a fun if fun stuff for not very much money. I love Diaso!

Yelp
This Daiso store is located in Japantown, and it's on the ground level of the mall. The entrance is quite narrow and it gets deep further inside, overall packed shelves and poor air conditioning system.
google avatar

Babette C.

Yelp
Does anyone know why this particular one has green signage, rather than pink? I'm guessing because Japan Town didn't want a garish color but I'm not sure. Anyway, this is a great Daiso because of the amount of inventory which might be because they have higher ceilings than the ones I've been too. If you don't know what a Daiso is, it's kinda like a Japanese Dollar Tree, so everything is cheap and costs $1.75. My favorite sections are the snack section, the kitchen and electronic organizers, and the stationary stuff. This is like a store made exclusively of stuff you don't really need, but you will find a way to make it work because everything looks clean and cute.

Yelp
Located in the Japantown Plaza Mall, this Daiso is pretty well-stocked with all the cute Japanese-style items you will likely sink your eyes to. Kind of my go-to place whenever I am visiting San Francisco, as I love the neighborhood itself and can grab anything I may have forgotten on my trip. They have a big variety of items compared to many other Daiso locations, so that's a really good thing. Worth a visit also if you want to grab a few snacks or beverages, too!
google avatar

Jessamyn D.

Yelp
Located in Japantown Plaza, this Daiso is huge, it has a lot of Japanese- style items from kitchen to home items to school items to random things. I love coming here cause it's huge and they offer a lot of items. There is a lot items that are worth the value.

Jason H.

Yelp
This was definitely the busiest Daiso I've ever been to. It was a crowd of people inside and a long line at the registers. Thankfully, most people were just buying a few things so the line moved along quickly. The inside of this Daiso was quite big. They had a huge selection of small items you might need around the house with a lot of different choices to choose from. Last time I went to a smaller Daiso, I needed to buy a soap tray and they only had 1 kind but this store had different styles and colors. I was impressed with how clean and organized the store was given the amount of foot traffic. The staff did a great job of keeping the shelves well stocked. It seemed like a lot of people were just buying snacks and drinks because that area of the store got hit hard. This Daiso kind of felt like a fancy dollar store. The quality of their products looked way better than anything I would find at a dollar store and I'm sure they would last longer too. With their inexpensive prices that fits any budget, I can see how people can find themselves buying a bunch of random items they may or may not need.

Yelp
Still there! A great, really good dry goods and general store to visit when you are in town. Routinely used by local shoppers for the value and selection of goods. Great!

Yelp
If you're in Japantown, your visit is not complete without going here. It is located in the East Mall near the Peace Plaza. First and biggest store when you enter the building, so it's easy to spot. This store is equipped with what you would find in a typical Daiso--organization, electronics, home, apparel, etc. It has everything you want, need, and didn't know you even needed. Because Japantown is a popular location, the store tends to be packed, even moreso when it's the weekend or there's an event going on. The line usually stretches all the way around the corner of the store and it gets hard to walk around the aisles. Sometimes there are boxes of items that are yet to be organized, limiting the pathways even more. Overall though, this is a great discount store with so many cute finds, and this place is a must whenever I go to Japantown.

Al W.

Yelp
Standard daiso location. Smaller some stores but good selection of items. Price is always good value.
google avatar

Myrna S.

Yelp
Went back to the Daiso store in Japantown pick up another cute BT21 product: a Chimmy cable tie. The store was heck-a busy this time but still so tidy and well organized. The cashier was a bit more pleasant this time around.

Vannessa A.

Yelp
I love daiso for their selection and cheap prices. This store in particular is usually super crowded, making it hard to shop around without feeling rushed. I went yesterday, and I experienced a few rude cashiers, though. Most of the registers are card only, which I was using, so when an employee yelled that their register was open, I walked over. When I've gone before, they didn't take tap to pay, so I asked the guy if they took tap, and he said "well yeah didn't I just say that?" I responded back that last time I came they didn't have tap, and that I was just asking. He didn't respond, and then threw my items in the bag, also throwing my hand held basket in the pile behind him. He also never told me the reader was ready, and just stared and me and said "tap". So uncomfortable. The cashier next to him also had a moment where she held up her sign saying the register was open and card only, and when no one had seen it, she said to herself "are people blind?" and then yelled that the register was open. Anyway, I do like this daiso, but don't expect the best customer service.
google avatar

Suzanna A.

Yelp
I love the dog section here! Everything in my cart cost $7, such a steal! You can find everything you need here for a super low price!
google avatar

Valerie G.

Yelp
In my hundreds of visits here have I never been disrespected and met cashiers as monotone with lack of customer service than on a Sunday night. When your sign reads "Last entry: 7:50," common sense and also anyone who can read would comprehend that at 7:48, customer has a right to enter a store. If that's not the case then change your sign and stop advertising false information.
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
They sell expired products! Double check before purchasing anything edible here. Came a few days ago to pickup a few bottles of Moshi Matcha Coconut soda and noticed today they've all been past expiration for over 3 months. There's a all sales are final policy here with no returns or exchanges.

Yelp
I love Daiso, this location is particularly fun. I was happy to be able to get some fun Halloween stickers, too.

Yelp
This location review will vary from my review of the Daiso in Daly City, Serramonte; both are vastly different in terms of organization: It's not as clear where everything is, the aisle organization doesn't always make sense but I know they did their best putting seasonal stuff in the very front, and the stationary before the knitting aisle, I get that. What I don't get is why the gift boxes are still obscure and way on the other side from the gift wrap and paper bags? It's also kind of messy, things are strewn like stars here and I guess it's not their fault because they are a busier location! But why are the stickers....never mind because it brings me to the next point Bigger and more of a selection: I saw a ton of housewares and more styles than the Daly City location and maybe even an extra section. Line moves fast and efficiently. They do not take smart pay, Apple Pay or American Express. For cash, a purchase of over $50.00 must be made to accept any $100.00 bill. I want to find out when shipment day is for them Because when they get shipment, the new boxes cover the current merchandise and make it hard to shop but I will say they are adequately staffed especially for the holidays and are clearly doing their best and with a smile. Hope that helps!

Yelp
This Daiso is a sizable space and is my go-to shop for picking up souvenirs for my kids when I am in San Francisco ... because everything else at the Japan Center is just overpriced! They sell a variety of goodies, ranging from stationery to seasonal products, like Christmas ornaments or Halloween decorations, to snacks and drinks. They're super affordable and everything is so cute, just the right stuff to bring home
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful awesome shop with many wonderful stuff for your kitchen, bathroom, slippers, snacks, ect.Fun place ,

Yelp
A pretty big Daiso! They offer lots of different cute products at a cheaper price The long line usually keep me from buying things, but this might not be a problem for others :)

Yelp
I loved it here so much! I didn't want to leave My friend asked me if I wanted to go to Daiso Japan and I was like, "Yeah sure whatever ‍". In my mind I thought it was going to be so boring. My friend and I went and she put a lot of time on the meter. I was dreading that we were going to be there so long and I was going to be bored. I ended up staying longer than her! I got so many things. I only have photos of a few of some of the things I got for other people. My friend was rushing me out. I found so many useful things I've been struggling to find in Fresno!

Yelp
Huge Daiso store in Japantown, San Francisco Sometimes called the Japanese Dollar Store but more cute stuff and more unique items that are not found in a Dollar Store. Daiso products are super cheap and good quality and they have a wide range of cultural merchandise line from home goods and snacks, to stationery and cosmetics. Found a variety of kawaii designed notebooks for my teen. She absolutely loves them. You can definitely feel the Japanese culture in this store... found some origami paper, cool sensu fans, obento food products, and calligraphy pens. Love coming here even if I don't buy anything. I don't need anymore trinkets as my house is already full of things and stuff. Sometimes I just like checking out the merchandise, majority of the items are useful but most of the time I don't need them. LoL! There is no lack of kawaii in Daiso (or Japantown, for that matter). Kawaii meaning "cute" comes in the form of Daiso's innovative household goods. Most items are priced at $1.50. It gets crowded in here so entry to the store is monitored and you might find yourself in a long line to get in. Masks are required inside the store. Business hours are everyday from 10:00a to 7:00p. A Daiso store can be found in many shopping malls nowadays. Review #2003

Yelp
I find the popularity of this store a little puzzling. I waited on line for about 25 minutes to buy some decorative or wrapping paper for a crafty project I'd been working on. And holy heck, the line that formed outside while I waited became 30 people longer. So it was with anticipation I entered Daiso Japan but I wasn't that impressed: They had an assortment of many things from little kids' "learning to use" chopsticks to stickers, lots of gift bags, tchotchkes (perfect for young kids' birthday goody bags), hand sanitizing liquid and barrettes. It looked like the Dollar Store had blown up and everything was labeled in Japanese. The best thing I bought were three cute greeting cards that were only $1 each.
google avatar

Shirley N.

Yelp
Whenever I'm in J-Town I make a point of shopping here. On most visits I'll purchase a few items. They've got everything under the sun. It's like the old five and dime store - inexpensive household and personal items but mostly at $1.50 each in today's dollars and cents. You never know you'll need something until you spot it here. Then it's like I can use that. I always think if I don't like it I can toss it out, but 9 times out if 10 I end up using the item. All sales are final. Cash or credit card. Effective 3/23/22 - price increase is now $1.75 for most items.
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
Love making monthly trips to Daiso. Unfortunately, Sonoma County doesn't have one. I'd say this place is similar to a dollar store. A lot of cool, cheap party supplies, gadgets, Japanese junk food and much more. Be cautious about pricing, most items are $1.50 and those not have a Japanese price, therefore you'll have to review their conversion tables throughout the store. Don't worry there's oleo to around and helpful employees.
google avatar

Sunil R.

Yelp
I like Daiso, it is a cool store and they sell things you never knew you needed till you see it. ;-) I have a friend who is married to a Japanese and every time they visit the area, this is one of the first places they visit. This is a big location and has a good selection. Not sure if it was because of the COVID 19 but it was not packed which was nice.
google avatar

Carol X.

Yelp
This Daiso's stuff are cute and cheap, But the long lines just make me weep, I cram my cart with snacks galore, And, as I wait, I grab some more :))
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
I really like this location because they have a wide variety of items and always keep things in stock. However, the cashier I had today was very clumsy and she scanned an item then dropped it back into the basket instead of putting it in the bag. I think it was an honest mistake, but it was kind of annoying to get charged extra for something you didn't buy. I double checked the receipt and items afterwards outside and noticed I was indeed charged twice for one item and extra for a paper bag I didn't buy. But since they were busy, I didn't want to cause a fuss or get her in trouble since she was very nice. It's only $1.50, but please have staff be more careful and thorough in the future. I think they were under a lot of pressure to be quick or something even though it wasn't as busy as it usually is on weekends.
google avatar

Steff A.

Yelp
Think of your local $1 store. Daiso is the $1.50 store Japanese store with some real quality items with something for just about everyone. Unless noted, all items are $1.50. I've never seen an item for more than $3.00 in there. Items I look for whenever I visit Daiso: Travel accessories, travel wipes, house slippers, pens, stationary, notebooks, cards, organizing containers, Japanese snacks and soft drinks. They have $1.50 Japanese items for every room in the house. The products they offer are exclusive to Daiso stores only which enhances the visit. It's easy to get carried away in here because the items are so cheap but after years of visits I've narrowed downs my list. hehe Like the $1 stores, products come and go so timing is everything in regards to finding things I'm looking for. Overall, I've never walked out of there with a light bag. Located in Japan town, this Daiso store always enhances my visit there. The value I've encountered through the years shopping as been fantastic. Whenever I anticipate a Daiso visit, I'll pack a larger luggage just in case I go to town in there. Swing by and browse around if you have to be in the area. Good Luck!
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
Such a fun store to find little knick knacks. Best part? Everything is $1.50 unless marked otherwise. I'd say 80% or more of the store is really $1.50. Daiso is like the Japanese Dollar Store, but leaps and bounds BETTER! This location in particular is pretty spacious and you'll find a little bit of everything. There's cosmetic products, stationary, school supplies, household goods, kitchenware, clothing, food.... Basically anything and everything at a fraction of the cost. If only luggage space were limitless, I would be purchasing all the cute dishes, glassware, fun kitchen gadgets, and beauty products! Typical of Asian culture, there are so many "kawaii" things and I'm all about it. Put a bear on a bag, I'll buy it. Put a kitten on a mug, it's mine. Put pandas on scoring pads for dishes, done deal (true story). Totemo kawaii desune! Self-control is definitely challenged when you walk-in here. Whether you're victorious, remains to be seen. For me... I just TRY to buy small little gifts for friends and family. TRY ;)

Yelp
This place is crazy!!! I'd prefer to go to any of the other Bay Area Daisos without so many tourists.
google avatar

Isabelle P.

Yelp
Growing up in San Francisco, one fact has always remained true. Living here is expensive, but you can find some steels in the city, if you know where to look. One of my favorite places to get bowls, cups, bento boxes, chopsticks, and kitchenware is Daiso. They have beautiful clay pots for $5 you can cook on the stove with to make stews, steamed vegetables, and delicious soft scrambled eggs. Those restaurant glass swing drinking bottles for $3 and almost anything else you want! From face masks to stationary this is one of my favorite spots to grab something made of class, ceramic or rubber for the home.
google avatar

Herman Y.

Yelp
Located in Japantown, inside the East Mall within the Peace Plaza, this store has many Japanese goods. There is always something you can find that you like.
google avatar

Carolyn T.

Yelp
It is so sad to see how empty and deserted Japan Town is due to Covid . I am not sure how the merchants survive or how they will come back. Daiso was empty of customers . They offered extra nice touch ... ask customers to use hand sanitizer before entering . Also nice to see the assortment of things they sell.
google avatar

Andrea H.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of cheap thrills and Daiso does not let me down! The items here are cheap, both in price and quality, however, there are some exceptions. During the holidays Daiso offered pretty wrapping paper and decor. The kitchen area offers cheap teacups, saucers, and glassware. One of the best devices I found here was a travel chopsticks-fork-spoon combo. That little thing saves me a few times while traveling. I also own a collection of sauces that make awesome appetizer plates when hosting cocktail parties.
google avatar

Eli F.

Yelp
Ew. When did this place become gross? Staff is rude AF. Got on me for dipping a Gatorade (after I brought it up to them) while I had a cart full of purchases. Btw, I'm hypoglycemic.. you want that In here, dude? Cuz it's a creepy attack and possible coma. You're a dumbass. That why I declared it. WHO THE F STEALS a$2 Gatorade? IM 45, moron. I wear red bottoms. You must have a lot of theft at your store. That's a shame. Loss prevention is critical in retail.. but it's not the hypoglycemic struggling to buy stuff from you.

Joshua L.

Yelp
What to say about Daiso? Well, if you have never been to a Daiso, you might as well not be told about it. Some things are better kept secret, though I am a fan.
google avatar

Apple S.

Yelp
This store is inside the Japan center on post street. It's like a Japanese Walgreens. It's perfect to find gadgets but then also all other items like you would in a pharmacy. I bought one of their imported juices and it was delicious, it was a lychee drink. The line gets very long which is the only annoying part.

Sara P.

Yelp
If you can't find something to make your day a little brighter here at Daiso..then you aren't looking hard enough! Everything is so cute here and incredibly priced!
google avatar

Sharon H.

Yelp
If I lived near Japantown I'd be here everyday! This is a large spacious Daiso that you can easily get lost in. And with mostly everything priced at $1.50, you don't spend a lot but feel like you bought a lot. Aside from being a larger space than the Daiso on Market, this location has much more housewares and kitchen supplies as well as snacks. Yes, there still are cute panda items, but it's balanced by other cute stuff. Lots of stuff. I seriously felt a bit anxious and sweaty as I combed the aisles since I had less than half hour before the store closed on my first visit, and even less on my second visit the next day since we were trying to make spa appointments. So the learning lesson is plan to spend a good chunk of time in here and make no plans after, lol!
google avatar

Kimberly J.

Yelp
Most items are $1.50, of course I'm a fan! Having first visited Daiso in LA, I was so glad to see that they have one in San Fran as well. I was able to get a bunch of gifts for loved ones. Store is neat, clean, and organized. I love the little shopping carts. You take shopping baskets and put together your own cart. Employees are quick and very friendly. All sales are final. They have a bunch of cool stuff here. Snacks, kitchen supplies, office supplies, sushi making stuff, containers, art supplies, party supplies, wrapping paper, dress shirts, ties, cups, bowls, bags, shower stuff, etc. I love this store so much.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
I love Daiso's, although I feel this one is smaller than what I'm used to. All Daiso's are usually flooded with people and long lines, this is no different. Almost everything is $1.50, it's not the best quality but you know what you're getting. I like the dog toys for my dog and other little knick knacks.
google avatar

Lorie C.

Yelp
Love this store stopped by and it reminds me of Japan. Parking structure isn't for BIG trucks. Have to park in the street but in all love it
google avatar

Mikayla P.

Yelp
This is probably the biggest daiso in the Bay Area from the South Bay to SF and of course it's in Japantown!!! I love love daiso and they have everything from stationary to beauty products, snacks, and kitchenware (and even toys for the little ones). Compared to the other daisos I've been to recently, this one is always well stocked. Of course, since it's in Japantown, it gets CROWDED on the weekend and Japantown in general gets BUSY by around 12 on the weekends.
google avatar

Allie Y.

Yelp
idk why, but I was obsessed with Daiso in Taiwan. finding a Daiso in SF was with pure giddiness. Daiso USA is not the way I remember Daiso in Taiwan, but still so many cute things. I love all the thing-a-bobs I can get here for cheap & I love that my husband would question me on everything I'm buying, "is that really necessary?". from stickers to home improvement to plant stands!! I bought them all & shoved it to my luggage to haul home. no regrets. so happy. this Daiso is incredibly busy btw - waited 20 min or so in check out line!
google avatar

Valerie K.

Yelp
If you love Daiso, this is a must-stop while you're in Japantown. They have a large selection compared to other locations I've been to that I always take home a good amount of stuff. They have lots of kawaii/cute stationary and almost everything you can think you might need for your home that you might normally also find at Dollar Tree.
google avatar

Alexi Y.

Yelp
Fun! Fun! Fun! This puts our Dollar Trees to shame. Daiso is the Japanese version, but prices start at $1.50. If you want a store of fun to shop in, this one is it! The biggest location of several in Bay area. You always need your own shopping bags for shopping. This location has some pretty ones...only $1.50 each. If you check out their dinnerware selection, you will find huge bowls for dollars, way less than in Chinatown or Ikea. They have gadgets you never knew you needed. Sushi magnets, of course are a hit here. Found my cute panda travel pillow for only $4. What's not to like here? Maybe the long lines. So, come before noon. But cashiers fill the front when busy and line goes amazingly fast!
