Tony meets with Tamika (a professional dominatrix; Kinoko Hajime, a shibari (Japanese form of rope bondage) artist and Tamika’s partner; and Naga, a translator also joined) at this Izakaya restaurant. They have Kusaia, which is grilled fermented fish, yakitori, and motsunabe (intestine stew with miso).

Seems to be a well-known intestine place amonst locals. Heard from my native friend that the intestine dish is the signiture in the Ueno area. I prefer fried for intestines rather than boiled, so the cookint method wasn't really my cupp tea. I quite liked the veggie dishes tho. Locals seem to like it. The place is so tiny you have to squeeze your way to your seat and stay crumpled on it right there. But due to the tightness you get to talk to locals or those seating next to you. They expect fast turnaround of tables so if you plan to chill with a slow conversation over a glass of something, not the best place. My friend and I got pretty much kicked out cause we weren't ordering enough lol All in all, a fun experience. Good luck, have fun! 👍

Best BBQ restaurant we ever had in Tokyo. Quite an local restaurant running by some seniors. If you are near Sensoji Temple, on the way to Skytree, and want to eat a great BBQ away from the commercial area, this is definitely a good choice. It must be a local restaurant with very patient service and a great beef lunch set BBQ.

We loved everything we tried here!, and will definitely be back in our next trip. We chanced upon this place while walking along the street and the vibe caught our attention. It was just the two of us so it was a short wait and we were seated as soon as a couple finished their meal. We were at the older shop. Despite us not being able to speak Japanese, the folks serving were extremely friendly. We tried almost all of their skewers, the offal is a must, we saw someone next to us having sliced cheese with pepper and seaweed as a snack so we ordered that too, all served with plenty of highballs! After some three hours or so of sampling pretty much everything, we also had interesting conversations with locals who sat next to us, starting with what we liked from the izakaya, to their profession, their kids, grandkids, all via Google Translate. What an amazing evening.

Small space but great skewers. The stews and lean meats skewer were yummy. Super popular with the locals and service was fast.

Finally! I got to try this popular izakaya that’s always packed with locals. I don’t speak Japanese, so I just ordered what everyone else seemed to be having—the stewed beef brisket. It had a really strong flavor, with a noticeable alcohol taste, almost like it was fermented. It reminded me of the first time I tried natto. I think some people, especially foreigners, might find it hard to appreciate. But the vibe was incredible—so many old men crammed into a tiny corner, chatting and shouting out food orders. It felt like a scene straight out of a movie.

Awesome place to stay. Nice innards like uterus liver etc. Korean Salat tastes really authentic and you have to drink the hot sake. English Menu available. Stuff is really friendly. Long waiting line inside the restaurant on Saturday. Tool it’s are very clean. Smoking allowed. Price range is standard.

The food was spectacular! The price was affordable and the service was amazing. I recommended trying the fried chicken skin and their grilled pork belly. The only down side is that there were people smoking and it made the atmosphere a little bit bad. But overall great food. Would recommend coming here.

We stopped in here for a late breakfast at the opening at 10:00. You could come anytime and this would hit beautifully. The horsemeat motsu is to die for - originally we had just planned on sharing one plate, but had to order another as we needed to eat more of it! The fat is rendered and the meat is tender, with a slight gaminess that makes the whole dish pop. The skewers are no lesser, as we started with the assorted organs (all wonderful) and added shishito peppers and more liver and tongue afterwards. I washed mine down with some hot sake - that’ll clear your sinuses in the morning. Love the smoky atmosphere and the train rumbling overhead, not to mention the incredible prices. Mandatory and singlehandedly makes a trip to Ueno worthwhile.

Yelp
It was really good, but I don't know how well my experience went as this place wasn't really for people who speak English. I'm sure that if I had gone with someone who spoke the language and was better at speaking Japanese, my experience would have gone smoother. This, of course, should not trump over the service, quality of food, people. No one was rude in any matter, it was just difficult to communicate. For starters, they had an English menu, but you could tell the person that was taking our order couldn't really discern what the menu said. There was a moment we both laughed because we both knew that the struggle was real. All in all, fun place. If you're looking for something that's authentically Japanese, not part of your average Japanese tourist spots, and a real sense of what life's like in Japan, this is a good spot to go.
