The Best Pasta In Rome 2024

"Walking into Dal Toscano, you're immediately greeted by a refrigerator displaying colossal cuts of Florentine steak. But the phrase “looks can be deceiving” can apply to restaurants, too, because Dal Toscano's pasta is just as much a highlight as the meat. Go to town on their silky fettuccine bathed in an earthy white ragù and parmesan, as well as their thick and chewy pici noodles coated in a red sauce packed with aglione, palm-of-your-hand sized garlic that’s milder despite its size. Then, as any normal person would do, opt for the kilo bistecca alla fiorentina (and some house Chianti, of course)." - annie replogle

The place is a spot for locals and yes that’s exactly it. Just locals. We are an Asian family that went there to dine for our first night in Rome. We were last to be served even tho we were the first to order, the waiter also missed out our order of wine while opening bottles for others. Then when the food came the fillet was just minced beef that barely had a sear on each side of u could even call it that and totally raw in the middle. The Florentine steak had good texture but no flavour. Overall it was a terrible experience. Service was horrible as we were neglected and the totally not worth the 180 euros we paid for 1 veal, 1 florentine steak, 1 beef fillet, 1 lamp which were just ribs with nibbles of meat attached to the bone. Would not recommend if you are a tourist.

4 for the food, 1 for the service. We sat 10 minutes and no one brought us the menu. We tried to get the waiter’s attention but he walked by like no one is there. It was nice that later he offered to charge our phones-the reason I credit an extra score. What made us really upset was not the slow service but the fact that he tried to rip us off when paying the bill. I was pretty sure that this was not and accident, not because he charged us for the salad that was not served, but that he took an empty bottle from another table and tried to charge us for that bottle of water-which we did not drink. Basically ruined my day. This is not the first time that we being ripped off as foreign tourist. Just want to remind everyone one (especially tourists) out there: be prepared for whatever we experienced cus that might happen to you as well.

Racist!!! Trying to scam us over tips since we are Asians !!! Poor attitude too!!! We have been polite all the time : with a lot of sorries and thank you. We also try to communicate with the servant as well as we could ( he seem like he don’t speak English that well hence we point at the menu and try to indicate what we would like to have in English since we don’t speak Italian ( we apology in advance for that as well :) he don’t even attempt to understand what we try to say, but reply us with only the food item in Italian ), everything is fine during the ordering and after meal is served. We of course say thank you after each. I think we have been very respectful all the time and see no reason why we should be treated like this ( being treated in such manner, given there are good English comments before I thought it will be perfectly fine if we couldn’t speak Italian well) . On top of that, he attempted to scam us over tips when paying by saying: “ tips is not included. “ twice! and “ we accept cash” he stood there for a long time… He said nothing but just stood here staring, we of course feel intimidated and by how he jokes around with another customer with the word “ tip “. We knew he tried to scam us while no actual good services have been given ( thus initially a service fee is already included in the check). We are of course furious and since there are only me and my friend, two Asian girls , and speak no Italian. ( in that situation I don’t feel like anyone could support us, so we just leave without saying a word after we paid our actual meal price but feel so wronged ) We can only try to complain throughout google ratings and hope anyone could stand up for us, we are just two Asian students studying in Europe, trying to have a great vacation in Rome and this is what we have get. Great disappointment… one of the worst racist experiences I have experienced throughout all those years studying in Europe… cried through the way back to hotel hence decided to write this comment. I hope I can get an apology from the restaurant. Don’t expect much tho…🙂‍↕️

If you're not local, stay far away from this place unless you enjoy feeling like an unwelcome outsider and being treated with blatant disregard. We went on a Roman friend’s recommendation, thinking we were in for a great dining experience. What a mistake. We initially tried to go without a reservation on a Wednesday at 8:30 PM (they open at 8:00 PM), but they turned us away, claiming they were fully booked. Fine. We booked for the next day at the same time. Fast forward to Thursday. We arrive, nobody at the door to greet us, so we step inside. The moment the waitstaff laid eyes on us, it was as if we had personally offended them by existing. No smiles, no welcome—just cold, unfriendly stares. We were seated in a corner at the back of the room, which felt a bit isolated from the rest of the space Sitting down, I immediately noticed cobwebs hanging from the lamps above our table—a nice touch, really. Then comes the bearded waiter, who, with a dry and indifferent tone, pointed at the menu and told us to "scan the QR for the English menu." No effort, no warmth. He deliberately took his time before even acknowledging our drink order, despite the fact that in the room we were seated in, there were only two tables occupied. Meanwhile, the only other diners—a clearly local Italian family—received smiles, conversation, and constant attention, while we were met with disinterest at best, annoyance at worst. When he finally took our order, we weren’t super hungry, so we just got a starter to share, mains, and a couple of sides. His response? A condescending "Only this to share?", making it clear he found it odd. The food arrived, and while it was good, the experience was so sour that we just wanted to leave. We skipped dessert and asked for the bill. Then, just as we were ready to put this disappointing experience behind us, the waiter made a point to remind us that "tips aren’t included" (even though a 12% service charge was already included, if I'm not mistaken) and that they only accept cash tips. At that point, it just felt like the perfect ending to an already unpleasant evening. This place is an absolute joke, and if you’re not Italian, don’t expect to be treated with basic decency. Avoid at all costs. 21/3/2025

The food was good enough, but unfortunately the god awful service didn’t make up for it. We had to wait minutes in the February cold without as little as being acknowledged by any of the waiters. After approaching one of them personally, we were told off in Italian, and only few minutes later after watching everyone ignore us and stare at us like we’re some intruders, we finally were able to hear that all tables inside are full, and that we’ll have to sit outside if we want to get a table. After we sat down it was still the same, the locals kept getting special treatment while we were downright ignored by the staff. And also only if they didn’t feel like acting like we were personally offending them just by wanting to eat at their place in the moment. I understand we were casually dressed tourists and not upper class Italians, but this is just plainly rude. This was the worst service I experienced in Italy so far, and I would advise any tourist to stay away from this place. Not worth it.

Google
Mediocre food with terrible service. Old mate would prioritise non-asian customers wearing rolexs. Steak was poorly cooked and the attitude was unwelcoming. Our server barely tended us, and had audacity to demand tips at the end of our meal, you barely served us..?

Google
Pricey and the food is pretty badly done especially the lamb chop without much meat. Beef fillet was badly done too! I am quite disappointed with the quality of food served there.

Yelp
Get away from the Vatican and come here for the BEST food around, great friendly staff on top of great food!

Yelp
Our wonderful evening was arranged by a friend in Canada who knows one of the servers (Massimo). It was a beautiful night in the Prati district, and we were fortunate to be able to dine al fresco. This is a place for carnivores. It was a bit of a dance to find something that I could eat. The rest of my party went nuts for the everything that we were brought. Big hits were pici alla Toscana and saltimbocca alla Romana, which allows us to try both types of their regional specialties. The service was outstanding, no doubt due to our Canadian connection. After dinner they brought out a *bottle* of vin santo and biscotti, complimentary, of course. Six of my family members have gone to Dal Toscano at different times within the last year and we all raved about our experiences. I wouldn't hesitate to send anyone there. Closed Mondays. Reservations strongly recommended.

Yelp
When in Rome, you must go to dal Toscano. They are proud of their meats, I am from Texas where beef is king. The steak I had at dal Toscano was superb and cooked exactly as I wanted it. Everything we had there (and I sampled what my friend got) was excellent. The ambience is delightful and the service is outstanding. Massimo was a perfect host.

Yelp
When in Rome treat yourself to a delicious steak! Melt in your mouth delicious aged steaks but not many sides to choose from. Reservation only so be sure to call ahead

Yelp
Atmosphere: classic Italian restaurant on a beautiful and quiet tree-lined street. The outdoor seating is cozy aside from the occasional vendor peddling goods or needy asking for money. The servers are accommodating and will make special requests based on dietary restrictions. The good: interesting and surprisingly tasty take on squash blossoms, which were stuffed with mozzarella and fried in a light and fluffy batter. The pumpkin ravioli in a butter and safe stuff were rich and flavorful, and the dough was clearly homemade. I enjoyed the vegetable soup, which was a classic trinity of veggies plus potato and stock. The fried artichokes were lightly battered of the meatiest parts of the artichokes. Could be better: very few options for vegetarians. I think gluten-free would be ok if meat is an options. Most appetizers were on the heavy and fried side, and there were not salads on the menu.

Yelp
Excellent service! Great meal. Not the tourist trap like many in the area. Authentic. Loved the Tuscan beans with sage, a great vegan option. We tried several of their house classic dishes which did not disappoint.

Yelp
Beautiful tree lined street blocks from the Vatican but not in the bustle of tourists. Attentive waiters. Good food. And bonus- nicest bathrooms in any public place we have been to in all of Italy.

Yelp
Nothing says more about a restaurant than it being full of locals. And Ristorante dal Toscano was that. It's famous for its steak. My wife had the beef fillet. Perfect. I had the beef sirloin. Latter was a fattier cut. Both were cooked on the rare side of medium rare. Delicious. That plus a salad, beans, bread and half litre of excellent house red set us back 79€. Ambience and service were warm and inviting. Our B&B hostess, Emma at the excellent Roman Suite, recommended the restaurant and made the booking. It's one of her favorites and our expectations were met. It was our 6th wedding anniversary dinner. And it was romantic, fun and very good. Evenings it's open from 2000 - 2315. Walk in is possible. But after 2015 it could be a lengthy wait, so better to book.

Yelp
Great atmosphere.. Would recommend reservations for al fresco dining. Pasta and beef were great. Locals dine at this location Making it an authentic Roman/Tuscan experience.

Yelp
Our tour guide recommend this place has a great local place to eat. The food was excellent and we were not disappointed. Excellent service at decent prices. The pasta was cooked just right.

Yelp
NOT REALLY WORTH THE EFFORT. This restaurant was recommended by a local and wish we never asked. Our waiter didn't speak English and was incredibly rude. When my wife tried to order to porcini mushrooms he said "finished" 3 times yelling at her. I went to ask a manager for a waiter who understood English and she put up her hand saying "no English". I asked another manager and finally got a new waiter. I ordered the burrata with anchovies (2 small ones) and a salad (drops of mache and a few cherry tomatoes). My wife ordered the steamed broccoli and chicory with lemon, oil and garlic. he lemon, oil and garlic were non-existent and the vegetables we so overcooked they resembled baby food. My pappardelle was supposed to be al dente - more like cardboard. My wife's pasta was as bland as her vegetables. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!

Yelp
Fantastic! Close to the Vatican. A wonderful proper Roman lunch. Meat is the specialty. Very very good!

Yelp
My fiancé and I were in Rome for his business Conference so we asked around for nice fine dining restaurant we could escape to... We were not dissapointed! The staff was very accommodating by finding us a table without a reservation. The manager treated us like the celebrities that were dining amongst us! Not an ounce of pretentious attitude by anyone, even The clientele! Everyone was so friendly and polite. The steak was superb and my cacio e Pepe was insanely divine! A must if you are in Rome! Truly a great fine dining experience! Excellent food, excellent staff, delicious wine... I can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Had dinner there last night they lost 20 euros by not putting in our appetizer order so we cancelled. Service was rude and curt. We had a group of 7 so we had a good sized party. Had to get up and grab our own olive oil for bread cause the waiter was curt unfriendly and disappeared. Food was excellent that we did get. Restaurant is in a fabulous location which contributes to the success. The service was on the point of being rude and dismissive

Yelp
We stumbled across this restaurant totally by accident and asked for a table, which despite a packed restaurant they found for us. We were so happy they did. Still one of the best meals we have ever had. Traditional Italian cooking of the highest quality, with generous portions. Absolute bliss. The restaurant itself is traditional in decor and frequented by wealthy local clientèle. Despite this, prices remain more than reasonable and there is no sense of snobbishness - all are welcome. After the first night eating there, it was so good that we returned the night after and had exactly the same. This was in 2011 and we still talk about the meals we had there to this very day. If you are on holiday in Rome and want authentic Italian food - go here!

Yelp
Favorite restaurant in Rome. Five stars on everything except price, it is a very good value. If you are near the Vatican don't miss it, If you are not near the Vatican, find a ride it's worth the trip. Locals eat here not tourists. 5 star plus Veal piccata - you will be sad when there's only one bite left. Pappardelle Ragu - best I've ever had.

Yelp
We've learned that, if you're going to do a big Roman meal, do it for lunch instead of dinner. We hit this place, which was recommended by an Italian friend, and were not disappointed by the food or portions. We started with the beans in olive oil and a selection of salume. We could have stopped there - they were both filling - but didn't of course. For mains, we had the pappardelle alla toscana (very flavorful boar sauce) and the filet steak with balsamic vinegar. Both highly recommended. The place has been in operation since the 30s, so they know what they're doing. Based on its location, it's a great stop after seeing the Vatican Museum.

Yelp
Terrible. We were seated and abandoned. We watched 3 separate tables, plus ourselves, leave before being served. I would not return or suggest this place to anyone.

Yelp
My family was in Rome earlier this summer and had an unforgettable meal at Dal Toscano. Not only was the restaurant beautiful, staff very friendly & efficient but the food was some of the best that we experienced during our extended stay in Europe. Later that night my father realized after a full day of touring Rome that he had lost an envelope with 3,000 euros in it. We were not certain where he lost it or what had happened to it.. We thought it may have fallen out of his pocket or he had possibly been pick pocketed. Two days later we called the restaurant to see if anyone had found an envelope with 3,000 euros . To our shock & amazement " Massimo" the owner said they found the envelope and money . They wired us the money. We were so grateful for their honesty & integrity. I would highly, highly recommend dining at Dal Toscano. Thank You Massimo and staff. Joe Perri

Yelp
My husband's favorite place to eat. Vatican area. Ok parking. Touristy. Good wine selection. The fagolini & gelato for dessert, amazing. Nice staff. Authentic.
