The Best Sandwich Shops in Jacksonville, Florida | Eater Miami

"Those looking for an Italian deli will want to check out D’Aleo Italian Deli in St. Augustine. The small shop is in a strip mall, but there’s usually a line outside the door, which helps to know it’s the right spot. Once inside, diners line up to get their fill of Italian-American classics like meatball subs, chicken parmesan subs, or Italian cold-cut subs. One sandwich not to miss is the house special, thinly sliced prosciutto with fresh mozzarella, olive oil, and juicy tomatoes — perfect for a beachside picnic."

Holy smokes, so good! Everything is so fresh and delicious! I had the wise guy loaded and it was perfect….lots of meat, fresh toppings and bread. The staff was super friendly and the bathrooms so clean you could eat off the floor. We are excited to return to try some of their ready to make homemade Italian sausages, salads, and pasta. Great hidden gem!!!!!

Google
A true Italian deli, staffed by incredibly kind people. My wife and I dined here today for lunch, and everyone was super helpful, and checked in to see how our sandwiches were. My wife ordered a corned beef sandwich on a roll, and I got (I think it was called) the Hitman, which was a sub with pepperoni, salami, and sopressata. Both were very tasty, and they didn't skimp on the meats or provolone cheese.

Stopped in for the first time today. Picked up an Italian sub, turkey sub, and ricotta pie. Even grabbed a Manhattan Special. Every last thing was absolutely fantastic including the prices. Best subs we have had since leaving NJ 5 years ago by far. The employees are as great as the food. Can't wait to go back!

I went today for the first time. It was incredible!! I had a pastrami sandwich. One of the best I have ever had. Then i purchased some homemade pastas and fresh mozzarella to take home. Huge selection of fresh Italian foods in their market. I highly recommend you check out this nice family owned business.

Google
Stopped by this cozy little Italian deli for lunch and it did not disappoint! We were greeted right away, which added to the warm, homey vibe. The food was delicious and priced really well for the quality - the meatballs and the “hit man” Italian sandwich were fantastic! My husband ordered a hot pastrami sandwich; it came out warm rather than piping hot, which he wasn’t expecting, but it still tasted great. We noticed that a bunch of people ordered the various Italian sandwiches so maybe stick to those if it’s your first time here. Seating is limited, with just a few tables inside and a couple outside, but it worked fine for us. It did start to get busy around lunchtime, so be prepared to wait in line to order and pay at the counter. That said, it’s totally worth the wait. Definitely give this place a shot!

First time here, Food was delicious, everyone was so friendly and a great little shop too. If I wouldn't have an hour and a half drive home I would have gotten some of their frozen pasta. Next time I'll bring a cooler.

Google
The Boss Italian cold cut sub is my favorite offering. They offer like 8 different meat combinations of Italian subs... So fresh and delicious! Thanks for what you do!

Google
The Wanna Be: Turkey Salami Peperroni sub all the way 10/10. The Boss: Mortadella Sopressatta prosciutto sub all the way 8/10 Italian lemon soda 7/10 Canoli 10/10 Everything you think a canoli should be. This place is a great lunch stop.

Yelp
This has long been one of our favorite sandwich shops. Convenient to downtown and well established for decades, you won't be disappointed if you eat lunch here. Parking can be tight so uber in or come on foot if possible.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches shops in Auggie, also real and delicious Italian food. I have the grandfather, loaded with meats

Yelp
We have always wanted to try this deli and we found ourselves in the neighborhood right around lunchtime. The place was filled with what seemed like x New Yorkers. There are a few tables inside and out in a true deli atmosphere with Italian products for sale, big deli counters, a freezer section filled with all kinds of fresh pastas and sauces. You can take home and reheat. We grabbed a table inside and the server took our order. I really enjoyed my chef salad with turkey. I'm sorry that my photo didn't turn out on that because it was huge and loaded with thinly sliced turkey meat and provolone cheese. My husband had a sub full of Italian style cold cuts layered on a fresh roll with the works. I was able to grab a photo of one half of the sandwich before he devoured it. The waiter tried to tempt us with their homemade cannolis, but we are in serious need of dropping a few pounds so we had to pass on that.

Yelp
Best sandwiches ever! Fresh bread, delicious meats and cheese....and don't forget the dressing

Yelp
It's a grocery, it's a deli, it's a restaurant and it's absolutely delicious! And just like that, I have another new favorite place! This is a true hidden gem. My family and I discovered it when attending another business nearby and just had to try it. All of their sandwiches are on the windows for review before entering...just reading them all makes you hungry. Good luck deciding! That said, they do have a menu on the wall by the counter inside and they have hard copies to take to your table as well. They have other items aside from sandwiches too, like Spaghetti and Parmigiana to name a few. You order at the counter and if you choose to eat in they'll bring the food to you. After you are done eating, you pay at the counter as well. Please note, you will have to pay for drink refills here. The staff is kind and helpful. There is plenty of parking. Keep in mind they aren't open on Sundays. End note: for some of you this deli may remind you of the deli's of yesteryear, when some of us were kids. Just entering this place may take you back...it's just pretty cool. Places like this just don't exist anymore and/or hard to find. Lucky for us we have this place here and it's been here a long time and hopefully a long time to come. Highly recommend...enjoy!

Yelp
Love this place tucked away off Highway 1 South in St Augustine. A classic throwback deli from the past yet so refreshing in modern times. Great deli menu and the retail space is (literally) stacked with all kinds of goodies, deli meats and cheese. Will make this place a regular place I'll visit over and over!

Yelp
I'm 100% Italian from NY. I know Italian deli's, I and family have owned Italian deli's. This is the real deal. I like to make my own "party subs" aka the Big Sandweech. Trust me, get a ciabatta from the freezer case, pop it in the oven for a few minutes for a crunchy crust. Make your own party sub from the array of meats and cheese in the deli case. This is one from Christmas Eve.
google avatar

Yelp
I drive out of my way to come here but this time it was a huge disappointment. My chicken parmigiana was pounded so thin that there was more breading than chicken. I couldn't taste the chicken. The mozzarella Cheese was good. Too much sauce on it. I would never order this again. Yes is did speak to the owner and said cutlets are thin but this is way ridiculous,

Yelp
Tiny but mighty! Small space but enough for some cozy seating. They do offer great sandwiches and some variety of Italian snacks. Friendly staff!

Yelp
A more! Sandwiches r so fabulous and have enough for next day meal. It's so delish and want to order more for next time go out to beach.

Yelp
Delicious! A real Italian deli. We have the vegetarian, roast, beef and the Italian. I recommend all of them.

Yelp
We discovered D'aleo's because my husband loves Italian grinders. He is always looking for a great place to get one and our trip to this lunch stop did not disappoint. I would say keep in mind that this is definitely a local, italian run small business and not a chain. Even the menu was mostly hand written in post it notes on the walls. However, just run in and grab a sub to go for a great price and anything else the store is lacking won't really matter. My husband ordered the hit man and I went with the boss. Both featured at least 4 different types of meat and provolone cheese. As you can tell from my picture, the meat was so thick that it was actually overtaking the thin hoagie roll. My favorite part is that despite all of that meat, our sandwiches were ready in about 5 minutes. TIP-- There is a strange 3.5% surcharge for paying with card? Not sure what's up with that, but grab cash before your visit!
google avatar

Kathleen N.

Yelp
Sandwich was fresh. Absolutely delicious! Friendly helpful staff. We will definitely visit this hidden gem again.

Yelp
Unbelievably awesome, and completely authentic! What a find! I can't believe we didn't know about this place! If you are looking for the best subs in Saint Augustine! This Italian sub restaurant is unbelievably awesome! My wife had the "The Hitman " sub and I had "The Godfather". Wow, that's all I can say is wow! They have freshly made ravioli and tortellini for sale! They make home made sauces for purchase as well! You cannot go wrong here! The cannoli is the best my wife and I have ever had in our lives hands down!!
google avatar

Mallorey S.

Yelp
Phenomenal sandwiches, great service, and cozy atmosphere! This place just feels like home. We were welcomed the moment we walked on the door and handed a menu. My husband and I decided to split the Hit Man and a Chicken Parm sub. It was an excellent combo! The chicken parm was classic and the sauce was delicious. The Hit Man was piled high with meats and the hot peppers added just the right touch. Though next time I would ask for extra just because I like spicy. Our lunch was so good we chose to top it off with a cannoli and it was the perfect addition to our meal! Please stop in and enjoy this local spot!!

Yelp
Unbelievable. SOOOOO GOOD. Perfect, hit the spot. Everyone was so friendly. This is place is GOLD! Classic Italian deli!!! Thank you!!!

Yelp
Subs here are authentic! You will never find flavor like this from Subway. This is as close you will get to NY-Arthur Ave (Little Italy). I recommend if you aren't eating your sub within 20 mins you get the bread lightly toasted. Especially, if you're an oil and vinegar fan like me! The cold salads in the deli case are a must! Especially the Giardinera! I was saddened when I ran out of all that delicious marinated cauliflower. Tip: If you want sausage bread get there early. It sells out quick. They have a frozen section for quickly reheating food at home.

Yelp
The best turkey sub I've had in a long time but unfortunately their Caprese salad left a lot to be desired.

Yelp
I ordered a mortadella sandwich shop it was good it was I thought small but what I made up for it I asked what the price of the provolone imported was and they said $18 a pound so I settled for the American stuff which is bland and doesn't taste like anything so whatever else you put in the sub will give the taste to the sub not the cheese just the fat content on the cheese is relevant taste is not but since everybody does the same thing that's unfortunately life! As for a deli it's a nice place you can buy all sorts of stuff there imported I mean but of course the price is going to be high so most people won't be able to afford it ‼ and it's not the owner's fault it's the lack of government control partly which doesn't want to control gas prices and let's the price go on the stock market like a Russian roulette you know one bullet in and then roll the drum and see if you get lucky and don't get your head blown off but the gasoline is going to blow your head off every time because anything you buy is affected by diesel price which is ridiculous! And the new moron that just got elected again it's not going to do anything for you‼ time to move out of the country back home where it's normal at least more so than here by far. I just feel sorry for those who don't have a choice.

Yelp
Good choice for deli meat and pickles I get their corned beef and pastrami, yum. They also have yummy pickles. Delicious food!

Yelp
If we are in the area of St Augustine we come here! The whole place smells like an Italian Deli! They only sell different hot/cold subs for eating there but have lots of other items for you take home and use like dried pastas, canned tomatoes, frozen pastas, uncooked sausages and whole big counter of lunch meats and cheeses. The bread is fresh the subs were good-I had an Italian with ham, salami, Turkey, cheese and lettuce, tomato, onion. My hubby had an eggplant Parmesan and he ate the whole thing (I had half to take home). Very authentic experience.

Travis P.

Yelp
Very fresh great tasting sandwich. Very fast service. Bread was soft and chewy. Very good.

H James G.

Yelp
Amazed I never found this place before, but it's in a strip mall off of US1 South and hidden back behind McDs. Hands down the best Italian subs in greater St Augustine. Fresh bread, meats, veggies. Yum. You know it's going to be good when the place is packed. Great service and staff too.

Jon S.

Yelp
Excellent corned beef and pastrami. Also decent salads. Prices also were decent. Service was good.

Yelp
I go here because they carry good imported cheese. This week I needed to buy some grating cheese. I arrived around 11:30. I was surprised by the line of people getting sandwiches. The line did not stop. I decided to try a sandwich. Did the number 3. Prosciutto, capitols, salami and provolone cheese. I'll say it was a dang good sandwich. They didn't skimp on the meats and cheese. The bread was good I just wish it had some crunch. Cool little deli that reminds me of sweet home Chicago. I also wish they added some hot items. They do offer some hot subs though.

Yelp
Great food at a great price. Mom & Pop old school style Italian Deli, get there early the line is long. Fresh sliced meats and cheese with fresh meats & cheese from suppliers up north. Old school feeling of being in a real deli.when you sit down
google avatar

Yelp
Best Italian sub sandwich I've had in my life. And I've eaten quite a few subs. Great atmosphere and even better quality sandwiches. I tried the House Special and it was divine. This is my new favorite place.

Yelp
Family owned, authentic Italian deli! ゚゚*:。\(^O^)/ :*゚゚゚゚*:。 \ (*‿*) / *゚゚ If you are into deli sandwiches, you must definitely visit D'Aleo Italian Deli located on US 1 in St. Augustine. It will make any trip worthwhile! I love that it is small and quaint with family members running things. The sandwiches are so delicious, all top quality meats, cheeses and a wonderful selection of breads and desserts. There are many choices for cold salads and fresh deli meat, pasta dishes and a lot of really cool imported items. In their refrigerator, you will find homemade lasagna, meatballs, raviolis, stuffed shells and marinara sauce you can reheat at home just to name a few. We have been here twice if not three times this month already. Our experience was excellent. The staff and owners were truly very welcoming and making sure you enjoyed what you ordered. Mr. C and I will definitely be returning soon to try other menu items. Don't sleep on this deli if you're looking for a great meal whether it's lunch or dinner. Hours are Monday thru Friday 9-6 and Saturday 9-5. Closed on Sunday. They are located behind the McDonald's on US 1. PROS: *Very welcoming staff as soon as you enter in. Joe always makes our subs NEAT and PERFECT every time! *Delicious deli sandwiches. The bread is "soft as a pillow" and not thick at all. *My husband and I truly enjoyed deli sub #1 on the menu with prosciutto, ham, oil/vinegar dressing and provolone cheese. Superb! The BEST deli sub I have ever had! (*‿*) / Highly recommend. (*‿*) / -Delicious meatball sub sandwich. BEST one I have ever had. Neatly done! Not bready at all. Excellent spaghetti and meatballs. CONS: None. #supportlocal @ D'Aleo Italian Deli in St. Augustine.

Yelp
Nice little place in St Augustine. Sandwiches are huge and everything is very fresh! The staff are friendly and efficient. They also sell frozen Italian fare and pasta for a quick delicious meal at home!

Yelp
I'm not Italian. But I grew up in an old industrial town in the Midwest. Thousands of Italians flooded in to work in the steel mills. And some of their family opened restaurants, delis, and grocery stores. I've had a hard time finding that kind of place down south. D'Aleo is that place for me here in St Augustine. It should also be notes that I worked for the Italian run sandwich shop in my hometown. I make my own subs and deli sandwiches, but what I now realize is that I wasn't using the best meats in the area. Again, D'Aleo is the answer. We ordered two sandwiches. One was prepared as a salad (some have indicated that is ordered as a bowl, not on my visit, I'd recommend ordering it as a salad). The bun was fresh, soft, but sturdy enough to stand up to the house dressing. I can't say enough about the quality of the meat and cheese. The salad was large, plenty of chopped meats and cheese. Watch the hot peppers. Most will probably not have a problem, but for those like me who are more sensitive to hot foods, be aware they have some heat. I also plan to pick up bulk olives, and meat and cheese by the pound. They have San Marzano tomatoes and plenty of dry pasta. Prices seemed reasonable on the bulk goods. Overall, this place is great and highly recommended.

Kym C.

Yelp
Tucked away place and couldn't wait to try it. Not impressed. Average. Not authentic Italian. The sandwiches and bread were not very good. Braciole should be string tied not held together with toothpicks. On a positive note, the sauce was good!
google avatar

Joe L.

Yelp
I've eaten here twice over the past few months. The first time the owner was there and the service was friendly and I felt like I was in an Italian deli. I had the Italian and it was good. Not great....good. They took their time to prepare and slice the meat. Pricey for a rather small sandwich. The next time about 3 weeks ago, the owner was not there and there were a couple of younger people working behind the counter. Service was not friendly not unfriendly. It was just kind of flat and impersonal. I again ordered a sandwich, their Prosciutto special sandwich. They just slapped some precut meat on the bread and sloppily assembled the sandwich. If I wanted this kind of sandwich I'd go to Publix where they precut your meat and have no idea how to assemble a sub. I doubt I'll be back. There are other options.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
Fantastic sandwiches and terrific service. This will be a new hot spot for us! Service was quick and staff were friendly. We will be back soon.

Mike A.

Yelp
Great food and always friendly. I'm a lost northerner and these guys fill the void. The godfather sandwich is outstanding, but they have plenty that will make anyone happy.

Yelp
Took a trip to Marineland today so of course we had to make a stop at our favorite D'Aleo Italian Deli. We bought sauce meatballs linked sausage and cookies and bread . The sauce was so delicious reminded us of my Grandmas Sunday Dinners . If you haven't tried this place put it on your to do list

Yelp
Hard to find a real Italian Deli in the area until I came across D'aleo. Small place however it gives you the right atmosphere of an authentic Italian Deli. Many Italian offerings on display and available. The staff behind the counter always ready to assist. As it should be, sandwiches and food freshly prepared to your liking. Highly recommend if you're looking for something authentic.

Yelp
Being from New Jersey, one of the things I miss the most is the culinary wonder that is an Italian deli. An Italian deli, for me, offers an oasis in a sea of mediocre lunch choices, it gives me hope that gastromic art will progress in a world becoming more and more faceless and bland not knowing. For a Jersey transplant, I believe they will understand my statement. For those not from Jersey, my heart weeps that you never truly sampled such culinary wonders. So, when I heard of D'aleo's in Saint Augustine, I headed that way for lunch, hopeful, but prepared for heartbreak of it just not measuring up. Let's cut to the chase. The food was good. Very good. I had the #3 and had them add fresh mozzarella. In addition, they had pepper shooters, cherry peppers stuffed with prosciutto and provolone. The only drawback was the bread. No bread compares to the bread available in New York and New Jersey. Whether it be the water or whatever other reason you heard (who knows, maybe someone sold their soul to the Devil for such wondrous bread), bread anywhere else cannot compare. If you find yourself in Saint Augustine, find your way here. A great meal awaits.

Andrew H.

Yelp
Authentic, old-school Italian deli! Sat and had sandwiches, and bought some pasta and mortadella to take home. Mom at register, tough love (but sweet) manager of the place, 1,000%.

Elena G.

Yelp
Amazing little Italian deli! Well worth visiting. Had the freshly made sausage and it was 10 out of 10! Very friendly atmosphere!

Christi B.

Yelp
Fantastic in every way! Freshly sliced meats, fresh bread, and a true deli feel. So good!!
google avatar

Darryl A.

Yelp
Saint Augustine's one and only Italian deli. It is owned by a family and that's how they treat you -- like family. The owners are from New York but have lived here for a while now. My favorite sandwich is the 'House Special' Prosciutto mozzarella and tomato. They also have a bakery filled with Italian cookies, cannoli, tiramisu and cheesecake. Only the people who know this deli, know that they make "meat bread". So, if you want to try it you will have to order it ahead of time as there is a limited supply and sell out fast. Try their frozen bread (warm it up in the oven). They sell frozen raviolis and other pastas as well as veal cutlets.

Copeland W.

Yelp
Hands down the best sandwich in town. Great family business that cares about what they're serving. A lot of take-home offerings as well. If you like Italian subs and cold cut sandwiches, this is a must try!

Blake G.

Yelp
Awesome! I wish I was local so I could eat it all the time! Authentic Italian Deli that does not disappoint!
google avatar

Yelp
Good sub with great customer service. Place is busy with workers grabbing a fast lunch. Ordered the Wise Guy and they delivered to my table. Great bread and nice portions of meat and cheese.
google avatar

Wayne M.

Yelp
We just tried this deli for the first time today, and let me tell you the Italian sandwich we shared was the best I've had since I left Brooklyn over 20 years ago! Simply delicious. Looking forward to the rest of the items we bought, but the sandwiches along would be enough to keep us coming back!

Mary U.

Yelp
I had the very best cheif salad in the world also a great sausage with sauce and peppers

Jennifer L.

Yelp
We got Italian subs from here. The meat , bread, and cheese were definitely fresh. The menu said dressing came on them, but we didn't see any on them. No problem, we added our own. We are used to having our Italian subs warm and these came cold. Again no problem because I have can warm them up ourselves. This is a family owned restaurant and we always like to support local businesses. But it is a little pricier than what you would spend at Publix. It was about $20 for two subs. But again it went to support a local business. We did find some of the meat was a little tough to bite through. This could be typical for such fresh ingredients, but it's something we didn't expect. Overall a great deli! They have tons of homemade pastas and plenty of antipasto ingredients. Oh and if you're looking for real Italian desserts, stop by!!

J P.

Yelp
What an amazing Italian deli! Beautiful meets, cheeses, sauces and pastas. Must try the loaf of bread in freezer section. Just bake. Delicious. Crusty.
