Cabbage Is Having a Main Character Moment on San Francisco Restaurant Menus | Eater SF

"I sampled a stuffed cabbage at Dalia that was filled with chestnut‑prune freekeh and served with a tomato‑cherry sauce, showcasing cabbage as a central, composed element." - Lauren Saria

Dalia was excellent all around. Fresh and delicious Mexican food with unique and modern menu options, including choices for vegetarians. The staff was highly professional and attentive, and went above and beyond to welcome our 2 young children. The view from the deck of Ocean House is amazing and a live musician made the ambience truly lovely.

Spectacular restaurant with great food and amazing view! You can even see the top of Taylor Swift's old house from here!

What happened! When they opened a couple years ago, the food was excellent. Now it’s best described as cafeteria quality food. It feels as if someone came in looking for cost cutting measures and the result is an extremely disappointing restaurant that is far below the standards of the hotel it occupies. The children’s meals were horrible. Poorly presented on tiny bread plates. Yes, bread plates! Just a couple small soft tortillas with rubbery chicken or beef dumped on top. The jicama salad was soggy and overdressed. The cucumbers were almost translucent. The guacamole, for over $20, was a paltry serving. It was served with too many chips on top — put it in a separate dish. The chicken tacos were a couple heaps of shredded chicken mixed with some filler and topped with picked onion. It’s looked like dog food on a tortilla. They were finished with what appeared to be premade avocado paste. This is all unfortunate given that the setting — facing the Atlantic — is gorgeous and the servers are warm and helpful. For an Ocean House restaurant (part of the Relais and Chauteau family), Dalia needs a complete overhaul of its menu and the quality of its food.

So over priced and average food to poor. Clam chowder barely had clams. Hamachi was fishy. The O.H.B.H salad sounded amazing but it was a plate full of arugula with a 1/4 cup of the vegetables. the salad description does not include arugula. Steak and burger over cooked. Salmon fishy. After apps, it was an hour and we still did not get main dishes. The waiter was never seen again after apps dropped off. We flagged down a bus boy and asked for our waiter. He said our meal should be coming soon. After 5 minutes, dinner came. The plates were very hot because they had been sitting under the heat lamp. When we left after dinner, I counted 11 plates with food under the heat lamp. A meal for 4 plus a bottle of wine and 3 drinks cost us about $800. What a terrible waste of money. We never ate here again.

If you want good, authentic Mexican food this is not the place. The food is pretty, but bland. Where are the rice and beans? The tuna “croquettes” are like deep fried cat food. The corn cake dessert is hard as a hockey puck. Everything is overpriced. We ordered fish tacos and were served shrimp tacos Instead. Just know that you’re paying for being at the Ocean House, nothing more. You want great, flavorful and authentic Mexican food, go downtown to Amigos or even Surf Cantina.

Although the evening was chilly, 58°, and the restaurant is seasonal and located outside of the ocean house, we were very well accommodated with heaters and blankets and enjoyed a truly phenomenal meal with a beautiful view. Our servers were professional and attentive. My wife has sensitivity to hot peppers and chilis and the chef made up a fresh guacamole for her from scratch which was delicious. I loved the mushroom quesadilla and carne asada tacos. We both thought the fish tacos were fantastic.

Opened this summer---a few kinks to sort out. Water and utensils took a long time and 15 mins before our waiter showed up...but service after was attentive. This place has great ambience and wonderful views of the ocean. I think the reasonable pricing is reflected in the food which is ok but could be improved. Overall a great place for casual outdoor dining in a majestic setting. If you are using concierge parking the Ocean House charges $5 for the first 2 hours and $25 hourly thereafter, possibly an attempt to discourage lingering.

Food is very bland - tasteless almost. Portions are comically small and very expensive. It’s about the view absolutely nothing else. Might be the most tasteless meal I have ever eaten.

Yelp
When you're told that there is a Mexican restaurant in the hotel, what comes to mind? A delicious margarita perhaps? Chips and salsa maybe with some guacamole? Tacos? Fajitas? Enchiladas? You know, the comfort food we've all come to know that the wonderful culture of Mexico has shared with the United States. Don't expect any of these items when you arrive at this restaurant. I hate when chefs take good cuisine and add extra shit to it trying to be fanciful only to make a meal that is unbearable to eat. And unfortunately that's what we experienced tonight along with a restaurant, full of other people who were looking at the food and trying to guess what the hell it was. We started with margaritas, which had nothing to do with a margarita, except for the fact that it had tequila in it. Those were sent back properly and we asked for a regular margarita that wasn't on the menu and they told us. "Oh yes, we can make that." Then we ordered chips and guacamole. The guacamole arrived with pumpkin seeds in it. Never had nor have I ever seen guacamole with pumpkin seeds. It also had passion fruit chopped up in it, making it even odder and Stranger, and not very tasty. We really struggled with what to order for the main course. Nothing that you would normally expect in a Mexican restaurant was on the menu. Yes, they had the names such as tacos and enchiladas, but they had nothing to do with a Taco and absolutely nothing to do with enchilada. Even the quesadilla had nothing to do with the quesadilla. That was the real mystery to us. It appears that they had taken a plate and smeared black beans across the bottom of it. Then they took a blue tortilla shell and added cheese that didn't melt. At first we thought it was square cubes of tofu, as it was also in the tortilla soup. The quesadillas had mushrooms and folded in half and to what we would think is a taco. This was laid on top of the bed of black beans on the plate. Making it extremely messy to eat. The wait staff is used to this. They were bending over backwards and apologizing. They knew the customers did not like this food and it is something they have been dealing with for the past year or so that this restaurant has been opened. We felt really bad for the wait staff because you could see the discomfort in their eyes when they sat a plate down. They knew as the customers would soon come to know, this food sucks. So if you want some delicious Mexican food, you won't find it here. Go somewhere else or up for something else. Hopefully one day, the Mexican chef at this restaurant will forgo his liberal ideas of new and exciting dishes that no one can stand, and get grandma's recipe book out and start fresh. Only then will he have a successful restaurant.

Yelp
I read reviews before dining here and hoped for a better experience. The service was good. I would label the cuisine Indian - Mexican based on some seasonings used. We started with chips and 3 sauces which is provided to each table. We ordered guacamole. The chips served are a bit spicy but different. Unfortunately it made the guacamole seem bland. As with other reviews I would stick to some Mexican core choices such as tacos. I ordered a jicama watermelon salad with shrimp. The jicama was just shaved on top so my expectations of having jicama pieces was not met, as it's the lead ingredient in the selection. The greens were dry and peppery. The shrimp were powdery and likely overcooked or premade. The wine selection is nice. The coffee is from Dave's. That was good as well. The view is lovely but not enough to go back. Not a venue I would venture to. I understand now why it was the sole spot with available tables.

Yelp
Beautiful views- that is the main reason to dine here Taco chicken delicious and crunchy. They have interesting sauces for their tortilla chips, but I would've preferred regular salsa. Guacamole featuring pineapple and pumpkin seeds was disappointing. It was normal guacamole with about 10 pumpkin seeds and a tiny bit of pineapple in 3mm chunks on top. Weird that they highlighted the pineapple and pumpkin seeds.

Yelp
A 5 star resort with a 1 star restaurant First sign of a bad Mexican restaurant is when the chips they serve are stale Chase those with a 5oz ( maybe). $22.00 glass of wine Tacos also blah... pulled pork on a roll served with potato chips ( really???) Will not return ... 1 star for beautiful view Don't do it .. went home looking for Taco Bell

Yelp
We have been visiting Ocean House for many years now and have become accustomed to luxury at it's finest. Your prestigious resort, a leader in World Class Service; an impeccable property with meticulously maintained grounds, wonderful culinary experiences, and amazing accommodations - absolute perfection! Unfortunately, our experience today from the moment we arrived was subpar, an extreme disappointment. We love to walk the grounds, enjoy the gardens and the views. It was sad to see the condition of some of the gardens; overgrown and overtaken by weeds, and dead plants. The umbrella at our table had areas of mold, a black stain the size of a half-dollar facing us. There were several bees flying around, landing on us and crawling on our food, one of them swimming in my glass of water. We had to trap it with a plate as it tried to crawl out, atrocious! What should have been a relaxing experience was just the opposite, especially since my husband has a bee sting allergy. I'm saddened to say Management was not visible, there seemed to be a lack of supervision throughout OH that day. In our previous experiences, the OH staff had been incredibly responsive to our needs and the quality was of the highest caliber. When we walked into OH there was a gentleman, based on his attire appeared to be in a leadership role; he was walking around propping up throw pillows and such. There had always been someone greeting guests upon arrival and as they departed. Unfortunately, when we departed, no one was available for us to share our concerns. We could have waited in line at front desk, but we were so exasperated, we left. The OH Team has areas of opportunity. You may want to think about refocusing priorities and spend the time and resources on what matters most. Identifying a bee issue and keeping your guests safe is of the utmost importantance. This was the first time our friend's had been to OH - sadly, their first experience was not a positive one. The quality and taste of the food failed to fulfill our expectations. My fish tacos had a fishy taste and not fully cooked, the guacamole had several chunks of unripened avocado at the bottom. My husband had a $45 lobster roll served with potato chips, it was mediocre and scarcely filled. The chocolate tapioca was quite good, it was the best part of the meal. Several friend's have shared similar experiences at OH recently, which I had refused to believe, and then experienced it myself. Ocean House had always upheld the Gold Standard that it prides itself on. Hopefully, this is a temporary situation created by staffing challenges that exist today. I'm not one to write a review and never have I written a negative one. Ocean House is special place we've come to know and love. I have confidence in the OH Team and hope they will take the necessary steps to improve in the future. ***Update: Thank you for reaching out to me, it meant a great deal. I look forward to visiting OH in the near future, it still is one of my all time favorite places.

Yelp
Went there for dinner, 210.00 for tacos, for 4. Service was extremely slow and food was not great especially at there prices. Go somewhere else

Yelp
Amazing food, my wife has an allergy to red pepper and the chef prepared an amazing guacamole from scratch for her. The fish and asada tacos were great as was the mushroom quesadilla. Mexican food at its best!

Yelp
Food was mehh... it's Americanized Mexican food and the meats were not very flavorful.

Yelp
Food was not up to par. Seemed like canned tuna fish in the tacos? Not a good experience!

Yelp
Dalia restaurant is located at the back of Ocean House closer to the water. We sat outside. Almost all the outdoor tables either have an umbrella or a covering so that you don't have to sit in the sun. They give you free chips to start and they come with five different dips (chipotle, green sauce, spicy, etc). We ordered the guac app, taco app, and chicken tacos. All were delicious. And the views of the water were great, as you have elevated seating. Service was really nice too. Definitely worth stopping in for lunch if you're driving up to Cape Cod or Newport RI.
