Metro Detroit’s Best Local Drive-Thru and Drive-In Restaurants | Eater Detroit

"The last remaining location of a small metro Detroit drive-in chain is still serving classic Dalyburgers and thick strawberry milkshakes more than 60 years after its inception under a swooping awning in Livonia. Just about everything comes slathered in Dalyburger sauce." - Brenna Houck

My kids got the hamburger and cheeseburger kids meals they came with fries and choice of drink they chose strawberry and chocolate shakes they loved everything they said it was delicious. We ordered carryout they said ten minutes and it was ready in ten minutes, no extra wait even though they looked busy. l think we will have to go back soon!

Gerald Snyder

Google
The last of a chain that started back in 1948. A true Metro Detroit treasure. The Daly Dog is the best!

Google
A beloved place of my cousin, I'm so happy she took me there for lunch. I felt like I was stepping back into her childhood with the nostalgia of the place. Loved the food and will definitely come back down from Waterford to try a few other menu items.

Google
Daly's Drive-In serves up great, hot, fresh , well prepared American style food! Located in Livonia, MI, Daly is a great step back in time to a simpler USA. Easily seen from the road with an easy in and easy out option. Lots of different parking options to choose from! This is a Drive-In, so you can stay in your car and they come to you, or, enjoy the decor inside the restaurant! Either way drive in today and experience Daly's yourself!

Google
The Daly Burgers with their special sauce are a must have whenever I’m on the west side. The ladies serving it up are always amazing! Visit this gem when you get the chance!

Google
I love their foot-long chili dogs with mustard and onions. I remember the real chocolate shake, though they used to make with real ice cream. I miss them.

Google
I haven’t been to dalys in years and remember there burgers to be delicious omg it was awful the hamburger was actually grouse it was not hand pressed it was so pounded it crunched when I bit into it I could not eat it had two bites that’s it the fries were cold I’ll keep my memories of dalys just that a memory won’t go back can’t figure out how they stay in business all these years

Google
Just as delicious as I remembered, a Daly's melted cheese sandwich! So glad there's one of these Detroit legends left. Stop in and enjoy a burger or dog and wash it down with a Vernors.

Yelp
Growing up throughout elementary school, my parents would get free vouchers once a year from Daly's and once a year we would have these burgers. We never ate out growing up so having these burgers was such a treat as a kid! We never dined in and I've never been inside the restaurant until now about 25 years later as an adult in my early 30's. It was so nostalgic and their Daly burger tastes exactly as I remember. Their special sauce which is sweet, savory and tangy is what makes their burgers so tasty. I am so glad to see that this diner is still around after all these years. Please help support this local gem in Livonia so they are around for many more generations!

Yelp
I love this place, I've been coming here my whole life. I always get the Daly Cheeseburger plate, which is the delicious Daly burger, fries and slaw. The burger is simple, but the sauce makes it so special. They tell you the sauce is made of pickles, onions, ketchup and mustard. It's so yummy, nothing else like it. The fries and onion rings are great there. If you like chili dogs, they're also very good here you can even get a footling chili dog. They make great chili and soups as well. Wen ordered a chocolate shake to take with us, it was so good. The servers are all very friendly and efficient. Half of the dining area is not used, I think they're short staffed ever since Covid. The place has an old school vibe, you can see that it's looked like this for decades. It's a shame that this is the last remaining location. We have to keep this place going, so please support them. It used to have a drive in overhang in back, where carhops would bring your food out to you. I guess a truck hit the overhang/awning and it was never restored. Such a shame, as it was so nostalgic for so many. My Dad grew up going there and brought our family there often. I wish they were on Doordash or Uber Eats, I would order when I'm craving a Daly burger.

Yelp
Friendly service with some food old school cooking. Daly's takes you back in time and the food and pie tastes great.

Yelp
First time here since visiting the area and great sweet staff. Friendly and knows their regulars. Had to try the fish sandwich since I'm a big fish fan and didn't disappoint :) Ambiance reminds me of the a past I have never lived in, but nonetheless a great way to experience the spots of what was really popular.

Yelp
My girlfriend told me I have to try a Daly Burger so I obliged. I had passed this place for years but never went in or even tried the burger. First, I love that the place looks original. I love places like this that look so nostalgic. The waitstaff is so friendly and on top of things. They waste no time getting you drinks or your order. The burger is fantastic. The sauce they use makes the burger. Maybe one of best burgers I have ever had. You wouldn't think it cause it looks like nothing special, but it really is. I had chili and it was good, the coney chili is what they serve and I liked it. The fries also are very good. The milkshakes are great. I just really liked Daly Drive-In. I will keep coming back cause you leave satisfied in my opinion.

Yelp
Last of a dying breed. As a kid in the 50s & 60s in Detroit, there were Daly Drive-Ins everywhere. This is the last. You simply must experience de the Daly burger - take everything g you love on a burger, mix it up & make the best sauce you'll ever have in a burger. Daly dog is also a great coney. Both come in large (footling for the dogs) and small. Since I can never decide which I prefer. I always order Junior of each. Excellent Cole slaw, fries, shakes and flavored sodas. Not sure if the salad bar is still open or not. Servers are always cheerful. The drive-in portion is closed. Cash only!

Yelp
100000000000% Go to Dailys. My favorite place growing up, I'm 46 soooo you get it. Stop by Luigi's next door for desert!!
google avatar

Angie B.

Yelp
Sat right down on a Friday eve when other places had a long wait. Chee Chee sandwich similar to a sloppy joe but with beanless chili instead. Softest bun, included cheese and mustard (I passed on the onion). Cozy, retro decor like stepping back in time.

Colleen D.

Yelp
I never really been to the one in Livonia but we used to have one on Wayne Road in Westland. They have delicious hamburgers and onion rings and I just mostly remember the delicious hamburgers. There was one in Dearborn heights but I don't know any more. Well I don't know if you were allassociated but I believe that you have delicious hamburgers too!
google avatar

Terri C.

Yelp
The food was good The service was slow They have part of restaurant closed off and using for storage looks terrible and feels odd
google avatar

Tasha R.

Yelp
I always make sure to stop here when I am in the area. If you're here, you have to get their classic, homemade Vanilla or Cherry Coke or a shake. They both taste great. The service is always fast. They're very friendly. Love the diner atmosphere.

Steve H.

Yelp
A step back in time. Good food , good service. The foot long coney was very tasty! I haven't had one of these in almost 50 years!
google avatar

Kevin R.

Yelp
Still fairly good after 50 years but coney sauce and food changed after the owner sold it to 1 of the cooks. Just doesn,t have the punch it used to. PS: not a drive in anymore
google avatar

Ken P.

Yelp
It's a staple. It's delicious and reminds me of home. Place isn't the cleanest but everything else is excellent.
google avatar

Roderick M.

Yelp
Nothing like a Daly Burger. Don't forget the sauce. Great service and friendly staff.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Love this hamburger joint! This is the last of a long line of Daly restaurants, best burgers and malts and Sundaes!!!!
google avatar

Cordelia D.

Yelp
I previously worked here. The kitchen (especially the grease trap) is disgusting and the whole place is nightly heavily dosed with roach killer. Lots of roach killer. They treated their employees horribly. They would staff too many servers each night and then force us to declare our tips way higher than what we earned just so they could avoid paying us minimum wage during the slower shifts. Our paychecks would even be withheld until you submitted false tips earned. Tax fraud, pooled tipping methods, and disgusting, dirty, unhealthy conditions made the working experience absolutely horrible. While the food was good, it was hard to stomach after seeing the kitchen.
google avatar

Yelp
This drive in is not a drive in. It is, however, a historic burger joint of note that had been around since 1948. It is quite dark inside. At 1:30 pm on Saturday afternoon, there was only one open table, but there was an additional seating area that was closed off. Several people came in and ordered take away. I had a burger, small malt, fries and coke slaw. This set me back $19 with a 25% tip. The slaw was crispy and slightly sweet with an oniony aftertaste. The malt was fine, although it was served in a styrofoam cup (IMHO things like this taste far better in glass). The fries were served very hot, and, fortunately, not salted. They are normal size, light brown on the outside and not crunchy. The burger was cooked through but not overdone or dry. The sauce is very tomatoey with a slight hint of pickle relish. The ambiance is rather dark, and adding more lighting would make the place more upbeat and fun.

Yelp
Come on michigan. What passes as good food here?! Ketchup? Please for the love of all good tasting foods burn this place down. Old, outdated, dusty place. Drive in...it's not. Back in the 60s maybe but not now. Bland testing. I have not been to one good place here in Michigan and this by far ranks the worse.
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
It was our first time here. Decor was retro but the food was great. The burger was great and the sides were good and hot as well. Had a large Malt shake for dessert. All in all a very tasty meal and we will be back to try more from the menu!!

John C.

Yelp
Food is great hamburgers are awesome with the daily sauce on them. this is the last Daly burger restaurant in existence please frequent it as much as possible I'm from the east side of Detroit I wish there was one of them closer. When I travel to the west side or airport I always stop there on my way home.
google avatar

Yelp
The memories are better then the Dalydog I got from here. The food was hot and didn't wait long at all. It's just the memory will live forever. And this restaurant will not.

Summer M.

Yelp
An oldie but a goodie restaurant I've been going to since I was little with my grandma. Brings back some memories I get the chee-chee most times, when I switch it up I go for the ham dinger. They don't skimp on the ham in the sandwiches. Just wish the salad & soup bar would be reopened. They have great soups. I'm never disappointed in the food quality & taste here.

Yelp
A treasure frozen in time. I have been visiting Daly's my entire 40 years on this earth and I have NEVER had a bad experience. The food is always great and, while the prices have gone up with inflation of the dollar, it is still a reasonable cost for the quality of food that you are served. Staffing is always helpful and, most importantly, give you time to eat your food in peace without constantly coming back to the table (as someone who like to enjoy his meal in peace & quiet this is greatly appreciated). The setting of the restaurant is all brown paneling and booths that will take you back to the 70's & 80's which is perfect in every way. The walls have old pictures of the surrounding area that you'll lose yourself in. I've tried a lot on the menu and I've yet to have something I didn't care for. I HIGHLY recommend the Dalyburger w/ Dalysauce. Get extra on the side for your fries while your at it! If a mic of ketchup, mustard & relish isn't your bag don't worry, the burger is even fantastic without it! If you can't tell, I absolutely LOVE Daly's. If there was a way to give more than 5 starts they'd get the max every time. Do yourself a favor and give them a try. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Kirsten K.

Yelp
This place is a classic! Great kids menu and simple, time tested recipes- the Daly Burger is the star, but remember to add cheese, I always forget and am a bit disappointed. In non covid times they have a nice salad bar but that is closed now- they also have drive in service.

Philip R.

Yelp
Great old school vibe! I've been eating here for years. They're footlong coney is my favorite!
google avatar

Ryan L.

Yelp
This is the best place 5 stars deserved been coming here for 38 years and I'm Still not done had there Daly Burger plate with onion Rings and Coleslaw, and Corn Chowder please come and get some excellent cooked food from the past.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for a drive-in burger or dog. Prices are reasonable and food is well done and tasty! What more could you want?!!
google avatar

Dennis R.

Yelp
I've been going to Daly drive in since the 1960's. There must be a reason that that is that the food is good in good proportions and reasonably priced. If you are looking for a nice family type place with good food and good atmosphere this place will suit you well. I miss the other (closed locations) but still enjoy Daly's today. Will I go back? You bet. I particularly like the foot long but the burgers give it a good run.
google avatar

MaryLou D.

Yelp
Another four years have gone by but I'm back. As long as they are here I will keep returning! I just had a junior Daly Burger and, of course their dependably delicious onion rings. It was plenty. I'll have to go back for a malt sometime before I leave the area again, though. I may not have family in town, but I've got Daly's! (100711) 12/8/11 Finally got back for that malt. I got cherry---is there any other kind?? Creamy with just the right amount of flavor. This is probably where I got hooked on these in the 60's. There are darn few places that make them in California and they cost twice as much. I felt guilty going in for just a malt, though so I had a plate of Daly-Mac, spaghetti covered in chili, cheese and onions. Hard to say which tasted better, the malt or the mac. Both were excellent. Dec. 2016--Back again. I only it in two times this trip. The Cherry malt still as good as I remembered but they no longer serve it in the bag silver mixer container leaving you the excess like the old days. They just bring it in a styrofoam cup. Boring. The second time I came in I had the onion rings and to my disappointment they no longer struck me as the best onion rings I had ever tasted. That's the first time in fifty years they haven't been top-notch. I hope they haven't changed the recipe because Daly onion rings is one of the things I look forward to eating again when I come back to Michigan.

Yelp
Food still good. Had the foot long Dalydog. Servers finally wearing full masks ,good for them and us!
google avatar

John A.

Yelp
This place is great! Good service, salad bar, shakes, soda and killer coney dogs!!! My wife and I will be back soon! I'd recommend it!
google avatar

Shunda B.

Yelp
It's a nice diner (somewhat like a coney type business) -- it was clean and servers came right out to greet me. I order a BLT w/ chili cheese fries. BLT - it was EXCELLENT Chili cheese fries -- they were OK, I wouldn't order to them take home; maybe just sit in only when ordering fries. Food took about 5mins to be done. If the diner put more lighting in to make it live, then it might bring more people but it has too many dark colors inside. It reminders me of a western style!!!
google avatar

Ron W.

Yelp
It's been years since I've been to Daly's and enjoyed their food. I really miss their restaurant in Plymouth very much. When you think about, having only one location in Livonia is really sad, but it's better than none at all. So in an attempt to rekindle old memories from our childhoods, Steve and I decided to stop by the Daly's in Livonia in the pouring rain this afternoon. I was rather bummed out by the fact they take cash only, rather debit cards. This is a really rare trend in today's world. I decided to order a Chicken Club Sub, with lettuce, tomatoes, and mayonnaise. This sandwich comes with some delicious cooked chicken, bacon, and ham. Honestly, this sandwich was outstanding and tangy. I decided to have a hot fudge sundae, with whipped cream. This brought back a lot of memories to say the least. Honestly, their vanilla ice cream was so rich in flavor, it just melted in my mouth.
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
Hands down the best drive in burger! The special sauce is addicting! Super friendly service, clean and loyal regulars. I'm mad that it's taken me 37 years to experience a Daly's burger.

Kelli F.

Yelp
Not good at all. Food was very bland and dry. We won't be back. This is the second time that we tried this place, and the food is just crap! Oh and the chili was hard, like it's been sitting around for days! The burgers were so bad, that my dog wouldn't even eat it!
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
First time visiting, thought that it would be a great way to eat out during COVID-19. None of the servers were wearing masks despite rules from state government. Food was okay but very overpriced considering that everything on the menu is easy enough to make at home.
google avatar

Leonard S.

Yelp
Hello there Daly-Drive-In!! I've been frequenting your establishment since before I was able to drive. my running buddies and I would come over 3-4 times a week to enjoy your menu, chili foot longs are still my favorite, show off our rides, and endeavor to meet members of the fairer sex. When we got lucky we'd take them to the now extinct Rollerdrome at Warren & Outer Dr. for some fun. Afterwards we'd go to the Daly's next door and chow down. (I hope they weren't your competitors) I continue to visit your location and relive those times! I really appreciate your being there for me and all the good memories. God bless you and Be Safe
google avatar

Kaitlyn D.

Yelp
Took over an hour for people to get food. I was rushed trying to order my food. I went in because I needed 4 bottles of sauce and a worker looked right at me and then proceeded to say "whoever ordered the 4 bottles of sauce and a burger is an asshole" which were his exact words. I called the manager and he just gave me excuses as to why they were taking so long and that his employees were just mad and that he cant do anything because he didnt hear it. My family has been coming here for over 30 years and this is the worst experience Ive ever had here and I will never be coming back. The manager was very unprofessional.
google avatar

Yelp
I love that this place is still around. it is classic Detroit to me. I used to go to the one in Plymouth, oddly it is now a RiteAid or some such. My dad was feeling nostalgic so we took a swing by here to relive father/daughter times past. On the website we got a coupon and got 10% off so we figured what the hay? They still have dalyburgers with the special ketchup, chopped onion, pickle relish, mustard sauce. Chili round which are open faced burgers covered in chili sauce and onions that were once my fave. They also have foot long coneys still. We decided to get one of each of the big three and a side of fries to split all between us. The zippy super 1/3 lb dalyburger really hit the spot for both of us and was by far the star of the meal. The dog was decent tasting but not enough snap for me. The chili round did not really hold up to the memory at all. Fries were hot, fresh and decent, cool dipped into chili sauce. If I went back I would stick with the dalyburger and maybe get a double version with some fries. I am not racing back in though. Not bad, just not equal to the memories, like most things in life really.

Yelp
Unfortunately I have to downgrade from my previous 3 star to a 2 star rating, and barely at that. I stopped in today for lunch and ordered a super Daly burger plate. This is a 1/3# Daly burger, fries, & coleslaw. The coleslaw was just mediocre. Not a lot of anything special. The fries were hot, but of the thinner variety than I prefer (The ketchup is still knock-off). The most disappointing thing was the burger itself. Absolutely no toppings, because you have to pay extra for everything and I forgot that & wasn't prompted by the server if I would prefer any. The meat was OK, though a little over-cooked for me. The bun was a soggy mess, and what the heck happened to the special Daly sauce??? This is NOT the same sauce I remember from my childhood. This abomination is a mixture of ketchup, mustard, relish, and chopped onions (I'm surprised I wasn't charged for a topping!). I simply can't bear to go back and watch Daly's continue to go downhill. I guess I'll just retire them from my bookmarks and remember them as they were long ago...
google avatar

Cameron S.

Yelp
Daly's is easily one of the top 3 places I miss most about Detroit dining and every time I come back home I give it a visit. Not "try" and visit, but physically visit. Daly's used to be a decent sized Detroit chain until every one of them closed down except for the Plymouth Rd location. I had fond memories going here growing up as a kid with my parents and grandparents. I love the Dalyburger! The sesame seed warm bun is classic, soft and doesn't over-power the burger. The burger itself isn't the thickest patty in the world, but it's a large circumference so it's not like you are getting short changed. The top thing for me is the Daly sauce, I'm not sure whats in it, but it's amazing and is the reason I come back time and time again. Once I started to order dessert, I quickly learned that their ice cream products aren't bad either! The banana split is large, but not to expensive and he ice cream is very old fashioned, cold and heavy. If you aren't brave enough for dessert, get a shake or malt with your meal! Just a note though, they only take cash so make sure you come with money. They do have an ATM in the foyer and there is a bank across the street.
google avatar

Billy J.

Yelp
Food is really good, they give you good size amounts of food, so I is worth the price The service was a bit slow. There was only one waitress. I wouldn't blame it on her, they should really have 2 during lunch time. All in all is was good.
google avatar

Anna S.

Yelp
I've always wanted to try this place and today I did! What a fun little burger joint! I am totally unfamiliar with this chain and it's history, so bear that in mind. Firstly, the food was pretty good! As a chubby-chick, I had to try the burger and dog, and so I got a junior dog & a junior burger. Both were good. The dog is kind of an average coney, but I like the coney sauce (it's listed as "spicy coney sauce, but it's not spicy at all). It's actually reminiscent of the coneys at Telway, which are actually my favorite coneys. The junior burger is a 1/4 burger. When it arrived at my table, it looked like a deflated wannabe burger, and I thought to myself "this is gonna suck"...but it was actually delicious! I got american cheese and the burger sauce on the side. The beef was flavorful and I think the bun was steamed and had some kind of sweetness to it. It was delicious! No need for lettuce or any other stuff - just meat, cheese and sauce was good. Really good. Fries were lame, but whatever. The decor clearly holds a special place in some people's hearts, but to me it was old and dingy. It smells like an old burger place, but not necessarily in a good way. Pricing was okay, I wouldn't call it cheap, but I get that it's an old institution trying to stay alive. All in all, I would TOTALLY go back for the burger & dog. Highly recommend.

Yelp
So fresh and American. Has some great strawberry shortcake and a nice atmosphere for something cozy. More of a nostalgic senior feel but u mess with it. It was a gorgeous scene and an amazing hot dog. Idk it was just a cool place?? Will visit again one day. Nice waitress.

Heidi C.

Yelp
What horrible service from the moment we walked in to the moment we left I had a party of nine and somebody said they would seat us in the back and then we waited 20 minutes and said to a different waitress what's taking so long you haven't even gone to the back part of the room yet and turned the lights on and they said we were never going to seat you and I said well why would we be standing here then Prior to that they asked if we wanted to split up and be in two different booths and we said no rude comments from the wait staff did not care about anybody there ever since they reopened from Covid. It's been a terrible place to go. I will never support them, and I will never buy another item from the restaurant again ,one of the waitresses did yell out right in front of the people that were sitting at the little booth chairs and said you can eat here when they get done. I said there's only six stools there, ma'am, and I said it's not a great place to sit. We have 9 of us and a senior citizen could sit there well, they didn't care at all. We turned around and we walked out. I guess the waitresses run that restaurant.

Darrell P.

Yelp
Throwback Drive-in/Diner My visit was on a Thursday evening. It was fairly busy inside, but only 1 car outside at a drive-in bay. It could be the sweltering weather or maybe it's just more comfortable to eat a table than in your car. It reminded me of A&W back in the day. I have nothing against eating in your car and car-hops. I like them. It has been years since I ate at a Daly's. Service was pretty good. I sat at the counter since all the booths were full. I looked over the menu and decided on a junior Daly Burger and a Junior Daly Dog with a Chocolate Malt. I received my Malt in a few minutes. The taste was good but the straw opening was slightly on the small side. The shake was not overly thick and it did make it through the straw but a larger opening would be better. The burger and Hot Dog came and both were good. The buns were soft & fresh. The burger had the special Daly sauce which I found tasty. Burger was good but I think a larger burger would be better, but for the price it was reasonable. The Dog was ok. I would rather have a natural casing Hotdog. Dalys' are skinless. I am not against skinless That's just my preference. Overall it was ok. I had better I've had worse. I would put this in the middle of the pack Atmosphere Daly Drive In is a throwback to simpler times. Clean but dated on the inside. Several pictures around showing it's history. Several booths and tables on one side of restaurant. The other side is made of counters and stools Noise Level Average noise level Meal Junior DalyBurger $2.89, Junior Dalydog $ 2.89, Meduim Chocolate Malt $4.29, total with tax $10.67 Open 11:00am - 8:00pm Sun-Thur 11:00am - 9:00pm Fri & Sat Wheelchair Access Normal door access. Parking in lot in front of building. Few handicapped spaces directly in front of door My Rating What My Stars Mean Ratings range from zero to four stars. Zero is poor, One star, good. Two stars, very good. Three stars, excellent. Four stars, extraordinary (almost impossible to achieve)

Preston J.

Yelp
I used to go here as a kid 15 years ago when I lived in Livonia and I revisited Daly for the first time in years. It tasted exactly the same. I ordered a super Daly burger with fries and it was excellent. I love the sauce they use for the burgers. I called ahead and ordered, curbside service due to COVID and my order was accurate and on time. This is an incredible, long standing restaurant and I wish them many many more years of success.

Yelp
Tried this place for the first time the other day. The burger was delicious, I got the Double Daly burger I think it was called, which was two 1/4 lb patties with cheese and Daly sauce. One thing is if you go here and get a burger you MUST try the Daly sauce it really makes the burger. The service was very good as well our waitress checked in on us every couple minutes and was very nice wish I remembered her name but whatever. What I also like is the prices. I was able to get their biggest burger with a big portion of coleslaw and a big bowl of fries, a coke as well as a sundae for dessert for only $16! Instead of getting fast food it's better to go here and get a fresh burger because you're only paying maybe $2 more than a fast food burger meal. Overall great burgers, good service and I will be returning.
