Google
Wow, I’ve been looking for Chinese food in LA and this is the best I’ve had so far! The restaurant has an elevated vibe, but is serving up some classic Chinese dishes that feel authentic. The short rib noodles were my favorite & the garlic green beans are simple but so delightful. Can’t go wrong with any of the dumplings, but the spicy pork soup dumplings really hit the spot! Ask for sides of sauce they have all different kids and will let you try them all. Staff is great and prices are also fair. You have to come here if you’re looking for delicious & cozy Chinese food!

Google
Dan modern Chinese was a pleasant surprise as the person who brought me told me it was better then din tai fung. It was not as good but the food was solid, the dumplings were great and so was the salt and pepper beef. Would come here with a date or a friend for a casual meal.

Google
TRY BEEF ROLL. Beef roll is my favorite at dan modern and cannot stop thinking about it 🤤 It’s got unique flavor & texture and I just love it. If you crave high quality Asian-fusion cuisine, this is the place. Food is great. I recommend their menu with short rib bc it just melts in your mouth - I can tell they use fresh and high quality ingredients. Dumplings and noodles are also great (how can they not be; they’re handmade!) Overall 5/5 restaurant. Price is also reasonable and Sawtelle vibe is so nice!

Google
Amazing service and even better food. Xander was an outstanding server and a soul reason we will be back! The green beans are AMAZING. 15/10. So rich with favorite and cooked to perfection. Cucumbers are fabulous, the tofu pork, popcorn chicken, and chicken fried rice. I absolutely love that they are gluten free friendly! We will be back!

Google
Listennn, everything we ordered was bomb! My favorite was the short rib noodles and the green beans! Everything tasted so fresh and well seasoned! Our waiter was also super nice and I would go back again. I also love that this strip of eateries has a little bit of everything, there was even dessert a short walk down the street. I think this strip of restaurants is great for a night out with friends or even date night! The parking was a little crazy, but there are lots and street meters that you can park at pretty easily. You may have a little bit of a walk, though, but it wasn’t too bad!

Google
Tried Dan Modern Chinese and ordered the sautéed string beans with garlic, oxtail beef noodle soup, and pork chop fried rice. Everything was tasty, the staff was super friendly, and the ambiance was relaxed. That said, for Chinese food and the portion sizes, it felt a bit overpriced. Still, I’d recommend it!

Google
Really good, everything we had! I want more and will come for more. The veggie noodles and fried rice are vegan and super delicious. My new favorite noodle place! Also the vegetable by itself was really well done to perfection. Thank you for a great lunch.

Google
Great casual dining with delicious food! Personally I’m not a huge fan of their XLB (maybe I’m weird) BUT the rest of the menu items are yummmmmmy 🥹!!! My go to favorites are the popcorn shrimp with spicy mayo (ordered that today) , fried tofu appetizer, chicken noodle soup, oxtail noodle soup (this one is really bomb 💣), crab fried rice (ignore the appearance of my rice. I requested no onions lol.. I know plain jane). Overall I do highly recommend visiting!

Yelp
I ordered takeout extra spicy Mapo Tofu with a side of rice. I do not have much experience with regards to Chinese food, but to me it was excellent. I love spice and ordering extra spicy defo delivered.

Yelp
We came here for dinner (party of 3) and did family-style, which ended up being really affordable (around ~$17 per person) and absolutely worth it. We started with the pickled cucumbers, which came out right away. They were super refreshing, crisp, cold, and crunchy with just a little spicy kick that made them extra addictive. Next came the pork xiao long bao (soup dumplings), which were delicious. They weren't scalding hot like some places serve them, but at the perfect temperature to eat in one bite without losing the soup inside, so good! For noodles, we tried both the Dan Dan Noodles with pork and the Dan Mian Chicken. The Dan Dan Noodles were my favorite! It was mildly spicy, peanut-buttery, with skinny noodles that carried the flavor really well. The Dan Mian Chicken was also very tasty, with thicker noodles and mushrooms that added a nice umami flavor. Both dishes had great depth and balance, so it really just depends on your preference. Service was quick and attentive. Everything came out smoothly and in a good order, and the staff was polite. The ambience is casual but comfortable, perfect for sharing plates with friends or family. Overall, 10/10. Great flavors, fast service, reasonable prices. I'd definitely come back!

Yelp
One of many restaurants along Sawtelle but if you're looking for truly authentic Chinese food, I would pass unfortunately. **Service: 5/5 great service, our server was very accommodating of our relatively large party with two kids -- we couldn't make a reservation but were seated right away and provided two high chairs for the kiddos. She also split the bill up for each individual so that we could all pay separately. Quick to fill our water and to clear dishes as well! **Ambience: 4/5 classic clean modern interior, was relatively quiet when we first got there but quickly became a full house and relatively loud, but music was kept at low ambient volume (interestingly was EDM which was an interesting choice for the establishment..) **Food: 3/5 fell short. The Dan Dan noodles did not have noticeable mala/spicy flavor (definitely modified for the western palate) and noodles were a bit overcooked and squishy in texture. Steamed pork dumplings were cold, skin was thick, pork meat was okay but didn't taste fresh. Beef rolls were probably the best thing out of the three items but the meat tastes a bit overly sweetened even without the hoisin. **Pricing: okay, on par with other LA food prices. $41 dollars total for three items including tip Overall, this is convenient if you're just looking for some Chinese food out in the Sawtelle area but if you're looking for truly authentic Chinese food I'd look elsewhere.

Yelp
I love this place. Food: consistently delicious. Service: we always get friendly servers and the food comes out quick. Ambiance: beautifully casual.

Yelp
Heard good things about this place and decided to stop by on a Monday evening for dinner. We got there around 7 PM, and there were a few tables available both inside and outside. We opted to sit inside because it was a little chilly out (although I did see a few heaters set up). We got a few things to share - half an order of the green beans, pork and shrimp XLB, popcorn chicken, beef rolls, pork chop, and dan mien short rib noodles. For two people who hadn't eaten all day, it felt like a good amount of food, although portion sizes seemed a little small for the price point. The food was just OK - nothing really stood out or amazed me. The noodles were pretty salty, but the beef rolls were good (with or without the dipping sauce). In total, the bill was just about $87) without tip). This feels like a pretty no-frills spot. I wouldn't say it's the best food I've had, especially compared to the options in Sawtelle. It's a good spot if you're in the area and want some small bites to share!

Yelp
Food here is yummy! Not necessarily the most authentic as it definitely is modern but I love the chewy movies! Service is quick and friendly

Yelp
My first visit here was wonderful. The short rib dan mein was the favorite of the night. The short ribs were cooked to perfection and paired so well with the hand pulled noodles and addictive sauce. The pork soup dumplings were also impressive--I've never seen soup dumplings actually filled with so much broth. The pan fried pork dumplings were also tasty and fried to perfection. I'd highly recommend this spot in Sawtelle for anyone looking for a delicious spot for lunch or dinner!

Yelp
We came on a Sunday night and had no trouble getting a spot. Sawtelle is always busy though so Saturday nights are probably crazy. We shared the pork dumplings with chili oil, Dan Dan noodles, and black pepper beef. The dumplings were definitely the best of all. Everything else was fine, but nothing special. The portions were also pretty small, so order a couple dishes if you're hungry and planning to share.
google avatar

Yelp
Love a good mapo tofu! Was very flavorful and has the perfect amount of spice. The dan mein with chicken was perfect as well. Can't wait to try more dishes!

Yelp
Amazing meal with incredible service from Israel!!! Will be back soon! Everything is the menu if delish :)

Yelp
Had a great time at dans! It was a busy evening in Sawtelle but we were able to find parking pretty easily. They sat us down right away and we ordered a bunch of different dishes. We ate them so quickly that not all were pictured. They bring out the dishes once they are ready and don't wait for them all to be done which was great so we could start trying them even quicker. Some favorites include the beef noodles, Dan Dan noodles, veggie dumplings pan fried (the sauce that came with these was so good). We also got chicken xlb and veggie fried rice which were both very tasty. The food was amazing, the staff were so nice and they even had a section open where you could watch them make the noodles and dumplings right there!

Yelp
XLB decent, not amazing Dandan noodles good but small portion Mapo tofu good Popcorn chicken w spicy mayo good

Yelp
We've been wanting to try out this restaurant for a while and had a wonderful time! We went on a Saturday around 7:30 PM and there were a good amount of open seats (both indoor and outdoor) but the indoor seating filled up quickly during our time. The restaurant is on Sawtelle so parking can be tricky but usually not difficult to find a spot if you don't mind walking a few minutes. The staff were very kind! The food was very good! I particularly enjoyed the dan short rib noodle and soup dumplings!! Everything was very flavorful. However I did think the three cup chicken and pan fried dumplings were noticeably salty. The rice definitely helped but even then was quite salty. I enjoyed my meal and time here and recommend folks trying the noodles at least once! But I probably won't be coming regularly

Yelp
We were walking by Sawtelle and saw this restaurant popping, so we decided to try it out. Quality Chinese food and so many yummy options. We loved it so much that we've ordered takeout twice already since we came here. Lots to choose from, so I recommend the following items: - Dan short rib: best noodles I've ever had! The sauce is perfect, and the short rib is savory, making this the perfect combo! This entree is a must! - Green beans: well cooked and flavorful touch with garlic. I was a bit skeptical at first but after trying them, they became one of my favorites. All of their dumplings are amazing. The only item I did not enjoy was the popcorn chicken. I don't think I'd order this again. The staff is friendly and service is fast. There's plenty of space. The right side is mainly for takeout orders, so if you're planning to sit down, be sure to enter on the left side entrance.

Yelp
After performing a "surgical strike" pre-Christmas shopping trip at the Westfield Century City Shopping Mall, our stomachs growled for bowls of steaming hot Asian noodle soup and dumplings, AKA street food. I hesitated to suggest Din Tai Fung in the mall because we ate at that Taiwan-based restaurant in Las Vegas last week. However, as I pulled out my handy Yelp app to search for the nearest restaurant serving Taiwanese food outside the shopping mall, "dan modern Chinese" popped up as one of my bookmarks which appeared in Eater LA's November 2024 list of Best Chinese Restaurants in Los Angeles. Although dan modern Chinese is a local chain restaurant with several locations in Los Angeles, its Little Osaka location was the closest to us. In unison, we exclaimed, "Let's Go!" My brother-in-law jokingly asked me to turn on my "Parking 'Aumakua" as we drove down busy Sawtelle Boulevard when I serendipitously spotted an open metered parking space on Mississippi Avenue and guided my brother-in-law to make a quick left turn to the open space. We walked a few hundred feet around the corner restaurant on Sawtelle Boulevard, Tsujita LA, which was bustling and had a line out the door. We quickly found the dan modern Chinese eatery next door. After peeking into their glass-enclosed kitchen, we watched several cooks roll out house-made dumpling wrappers and cut fresh noodles before entering their bright woods and modern, furnished dining room. A cheery server escorted us to a table set with eating utensils and menus and brought us glasses of water before giving menu item descriptions. After noticing that dan modern Chinese features housemade dumpling wrappers and noodles, we understood the menu did not feature traditional Sichuan spicy dan dan mian 擔擔麪 with minced pork. However, this restaurant offers both noodle soups and dry-style soups. We entered the restaurant after peering into the glass-enclosed kitchen, where we watched the cooks rolling our housemade dumpling wrappers and cutting noodles. I watched one cook stir-frying food in a wok before entering the modern furnished dining room and bright wood. At the time, we were the only Asians in the restaurant for at least 15 minutes before the restaurant began filling with other hungry customers. I spotted my husband's favorite appetizer menu item, Popcorn Chicken ($11.25), which is extra crispy, marinated, and juicy boneless golden fried bite-sized chicken pieces. We usually see this popular Taiwanese street food served with fried basil leaves and seasoned with spicy chili. However, dan modern serves its menu item with a spicy aioli and garnishes of toasted garlic, scallions, and cilantro. Then, our eyes were averted to their Shanghainese soup dumplings or xiaolongbao 小籠包 and handmade dumplings or jiaozi 餃子 with preparation choices of steamed (zhēngjiǎo), pan-fried (jiānjiǎo), or boiled (shuǐjiǎo and served in pool of chili oil). We ordered the pork and shrimp filled dumplings prepared by pan-frying, also known as pot stickers, and boiled served with chili oil. Of course, because we also came here for noodles, we ordered the short rib dan mein made with Shanghainese thick housemade wheat flour noodles or cumian 粗麵 which are similar to Japanese udon. The thick garlicky sweet soy sauce-based sauce coated the noodles and there were plentiful amounts of shiitake mushrooms, snow pea leaves. The beef short rib meat was fork-tender and also generously portioned in this noodle dish. We completed our meal with a bowl of beef oxtail noodle soup. The beef was melt-in-your mouth tender and its dark thin broth had essences of star anise or five-spice powder. The soup noodles were thinner and almost spaghetti-like. The bowl size was deceiving because we thought we wouldn't have enough to share among the three of us but we were wrong! We also enjoyed the tender-cooked vegetable garnishes and slightly spicy chopped preserved vegetable that was served on the side. Our only knock against this dish was we felt the soup could have been served more heat hot. $17.25 We'd gladly return to dan modern Chinese for their chewy noodles and medium textured dumpling wrappers. The Shanghainese, Taiwanese, and Cantonese flavors and textures were authentic but we did detect slight Westernized and other Asian twists

Yelp
Came here for date night. It's definitely a great ambiance for a date or an intimate catch up with friends. The dishes are very similar to DTF but marginally cheaper and so delicious. They took our order and the food was served very quickly. Where the restaurant fell off was they really really really lagged on getting us the bill (15+ min) where our table and the one next to us were just waiting to pay. At the same time, there was only one server to 10 tables so patience is key however management might consider stepping in to support staff to take care of checks if necessary.

Yelp
If you're looking for good eats with fast service, fair price especially lunch specials during the week until 4 pm. Dan Modern Chinese is a great spot to check out on Sawtelle. The chili dumplings were definitely a highlight--fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. I also really enjoyed the beef oxtail roll, which was tender with cucumber though too much green onions for me liked it with Hoisin sauce The Beef short rib noodles were thick and had a firmer, chewier texture, which wasn't exactly my favorite, but they might be a hit if you prefer that style. Overall, it's a solid choice for a quick, satisfying meal with consistently good food and efficient service!

Yelp
This place is insanely good!! I originally went to just get some pork dumplings (which were amazing) and ended up eating a lot of other good stuff too. Their veggie dumplings and noodles are sooooooo gooooood!!! All the staff were really nice and friendly. The only annoying thing is the outside seating is awkward because everyone waiting to be seated is just standing next to you staring. It's not the restaurant's fault but feels kind of weird during a meal. Definitely returning here.

Yelp
Definitely a highly-acclaimed Chinese restaurant on the west side. We came on Sunday night and the two of us were able to get seated right away. We ordered a variety of items on the menu. PORK XLB -- I appreciated the thin skin but thought the filling could be a little bit more juicy. DTF wins but still a good order! BEEF ROLL -- very tasty and has the perfect balance of salty and sweet with the hoisin. A win in my book. MAPO TOFU WITH PORK -- does not come with rice so you'll have to order it on the side. I think it's decent but the flavor is more on the lighter side. I think there's better things on the menu. SHORT RIB DAN MEIN -- this is star of the show! The noodles here are sooo chewy and delicious. It's not as thick as udon but it's reminiscent to udon in terms of texture. The short rib is so tender and cooked to perfection. The sauce is a bit salty but not overpowering in my opinion. Overall, yes a solid Chinese restaurant for the deprived West LA Community. It's definitely more "modern" as the name states and not traditional by any means.

Yelp
I love the service and help with ordering. You gotta try the dumplings! The beers are also a must! My fav are the young master Pilsner from Hong Kong and Hitachino from Japan are so tasty and refreshing. So hard to decide what to order because everything looked so yummy! My fav are the pork and crab soup dumplings and the string beans!!! Ok to bring your dog, there's shades outdoor seating.

Yelp
I saw a movie at 3rd St. Promenade with some friends, and afterwards, we decided to get some Chinese food. We ended up choosing this spot to see what all the fuss was about. From the get-go, we noticed the menu is heavily skewed towards vegetarian options, with only a few meat dishes scattered about. I decided to try the chicken dan mein, which is their version of chicken chow mein, albeit with noodles that looked like they might be auditioning for a role in a thick pasta commercial. When the food arrived, it was the culinary equivalent of a 'meh' emoji. The chicken dan mein was fine--if by "fine" you mean it was as memorable as a random Tuesday. The noodles were indeed thicker, which I suppose could be a plus if you're into that sort of thing, but the flavor was about as exciting as a conference call. The service was also on the 'blah' side of average. Our server was around, and they did the job, but it felt like their heart wasn't entirely in it. Not that I blame them; it's tough to be enthusiastic about food that doesn't quite hit the mark. The ambiance? It was what you'd expect from a standard LA eatery--polished but lacking any real personality. It was as though someone took all the typical LA restaurant clichés, rolled them into one, and called it a day. Nothing about it made me think, "Wow, I want to come back here just to soak up this atmosphere." Now, let's talk parking. Or rather, let's talk about the elusive quest for parking. Since the restaurant is on a street with zero available parking spots, finding a place to leave your car felt like competing in an Olympic sport. We had to circle around and settle for a spot several blocks away, keeping a hawk-like eye on the street signs to avoid the dreaded parking ticket. All things considered, this place didn't offer anything remarkable enough to make me want to return. It was like a forgettable first date--fine in theory but lacking the spark to make it memorable.

Tamar T.

Yelp
I had the chicken soup dumplings and the dan dan noodles. The noodles were cold, unlike the noodles I had in the past which were served hot, but they were delicious and spicy. The pricing is very reasonable and the service is friendly and attentive.

Yelp
All the food I've tried from here has been really good! Personally, I like getting the dumplings and the green beans, but I think it's hard to go wrong. The food can be a little pricey, but it's always good quality. The service here is also good! I've ordered at the restaurant and for takeout, and both have been easy experiences. Only thing lacking for is the atmosphere inside. It's a little sterile and dull, but generally clean.
google avatar

Mac S.

Yelp
The most juicy xlb ever tried in LA! The fried dumplings are decent too. The service is always great. Can be super busy on weekends and nights. May need wait before getting a table.

Yelp
The food was delicious! Service was very quick and ambiance was nice. We ordered the 3 cup chicken, crab fried rice, soup dumpling, and chicken and shishito peppers. The food came out within 10 minutes! Our family was visiting LA and was craving Chinese food and it really hit the spot. The only thing I noticed was that the portion sizes are small for the price however I think the overall quality of the food was great.

Yelp
If you just want a spot for a quick get together bite or if you like pricey small portioned American Chinese fusion in a nice clean restaurant then this spot's for you! If you're a foodie looking for food that "hits the spot" this isn't it. Most of the food was very average and small portioned. I'm shocked they even butchered/Americanized beef rolls. Dont get me wrong they're still tasty but it doesn't hit the spot and doesn't taste as similar as real beef rolls or even northern cafe's beef rolls. Here's what we liked and would order again from best to least: * short rib Dan mien large - yummy * fried rice - yummy addicting to eat but at the end of the day it's just fried rice * beef roll - alright wouldn't really get again unless there's nothing else on the menu to get * spicy ox tail soup - bad would not get again. The soup was tasty the noodles were bad and the soup didn't stick on the noodles * fried tofu - so bad would not get again * dumpling - so bad would not get again * 3 cup chicken - SO SO bad would not try again

Yelp
First stop right when I landed in LA. Was craving some xiao long bao and I wanted to try something besides Din Tai Fung. In a little corner, located at an outdoor shopping center, this restaurant is very cute with lots of windows, you can't miss it. Ordered the short rib noodles which were so yummy but a little too greasy for my liking. One order of the 3 pieces chicken xiao long bao and 3 pieces of the pork and shrimp xiao long bao. Both were delicious and soupy but I liked the pork and shrimp a little more since it was more flavorful. Service was great. The server was very attentive and explained what's popular and how big/small the portions are.
google avatar

Angelina T.

Yelp
food was great! i would say its like a din tai fung dupe lol. the service was nice and attentive. the ambiance is spacious and pretty! the portions were a bit on the smaller side but it was fine. the chili wontons were amazing and so was the xạo long bao. my favorite items for sure! the noodles were good but not my favorite, but if you like peanut noodles you would love it. the popcorn chicken was soo crispy and the sauce was amazinggg. would recommend this place if you're nearby :)

Anthony G.

Yelp
I've ordered a number of times now and the food is tremendous. As good as and maybe better than Din Tai Fung. Great noodles. Never overcooked. Great XLB. Very flavorful. Dumplings are never mushy or hard. Blown away!

Yelp
Whenever I visit Sawtelle, I usually stick to Japanese food, so it was a nice change of pace to try Dan Modern Chinese today. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the standout for me was the Short Rib Dan Mein. A friend ordered it, and I got to sneak a bite--definitely getting my own next time! The restaurant was clean, the staff was incredibly kind and attentive, and it was very kid-friendly, which we really appreciated. There were plenty of families with young kids when we came at noon on a Saturday. I'll definitely be back and will update this review with photos next time--I was too busy catching up with friends from the East Coast while feeding my baby...
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing - pickled cucumber - string beans Good - Beef and broccoli - chicken and shrimp soup dumplings: almost amazing
google avatar

CJ R.

Yelp
Absolutely incredible food, and it's affordable! Cannot recommend it enough! The short rib dan mein is to die for, and the soup dumplings are just as good as Din Tai Fung at a FRACTION of the price. Good restaurant, too, with nice interior design and great vibes. My server was incredibly kind and helpful with the menu--I will absolutely be coming back!! Cannot recommend it enough :) P.s. they also have a designated driver program where you can get a free non-alcoholic drink if you come with a group and identify yourself as the dd.

Yelp
came for lunch on a Saturday with a friend and arrived around noon. it was not crowded at all and we were able to be seated immediately. we both shared the short rib dan mein and garlic string beans and it was the perfect amount! the beef was really tender and both dishes were enjoyable! there are plenty of spacious seats available and street parking can be easily found in the surrounding area. the service was great and staff were helpful in making us making a decision on what to get.
google avatar

Jada W.

Yelp
I've been here a couple times and I really like it! The scallion pancake and the chili wontons are my go to. They have hot tea which compliments the meal well. There is both outdoor in indoor seating which is great. It's a nice place to order a bunch of things and then share. The staff are quick and nice. I will for sure come here again.

Yelp
One of my favorite Chinese spots in Los Angeles! The Dan modern noodles are so yummy. I love the udon noodle and it always has the best smoky flavor to it. Parking is a bit tough. It's street parking only, but that's Sawtelle for ya! Fast casual service. Usually no lines! Great lunch options. Looooove the garlic green beans- my FAVORITE veg on the menu.

Yelp
3/23/25 - So glad that we celebrated my DIL's 44th birthday with 5 Adults & 2 kids at this restaurant. Food was tasty. Portions could be a little larger (5 dumplings per order for $10.50). Free refills on drinks. We were allowed to bring our own cupcakes & candles to sing "Happy Birthday." Our Server Sarah was truly delightful, outstanding, fast, & efficient. Host Jerel was very kind & extremely helpful in getting us a table for our large group. Decor was small & simple. The one restroom was clean. Street parking is limited. Will definitely return! Thank you for making happy family birthday memories for us.

Yelp
Yum yum and yum. Everything we ordered was great. We had: Spicy oxtail soup so beefy Pork soup dumplings. Tons of soup inside. Salt and pepper tofu. Tasty! Snow pea leaves with garlic Service was fast though they are busy so was occasionally hard to get the waitress. Also check in a the door took a while since only the manager could seat people but he got us in quickly so that was nice. I like the modern aesthetic and sitting outside was okay because of the hear lamps.
google avatar

Yelp
Really nice interior. The service was good. The food itself was just ok/decent but nothing really made me feel like I needed to come back here again to have. The flavor was lacking, I would say it's a very sub par DTF

Yelp
Visited my daughter at UCLA. We wanted Asian food and headed to Sawtelle. Walked up and down the street and saw many places that looked inviting. We settled on Dan Modern Chinese because we saw dim sum on some tables that looked good. We ordered soup dumplings, dumplings, bok choy and noodles. The dumplings were very good and the noodles and bok choy were decent. I would come back for dumplings but would pass on the noodles. If you crave dim sum, this place will satisfy your craving but dont expect much from the noodles. Noodles were thick and chewy with a gravy like sauce. Homemade noodles but not the best.

Yelp
The food here is good for the Westside, and there wasn't a wait during lunch on Saturday. The Three Cup Chicken was very flavorful, and I liked the Seaweed and Tofu Salad as well. The Pork Xiao Long Bao has a nice thin skin, although my dining companions thought they lacked flavor. The Oxtail Beef Soup was bland and needed some salt and flavor. Overall, a solid spot for Chinese food in West LA.

Yelp
Dan Modern Chinese is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in Sawtelle! This is a very busy area, so make sure to give yourself time to find street parking and potentially wait to be seated. I have been here several times and have somehow managed to always be seated right away. I will say this place always seems a little understaffed but the food is great. Whether you're coming for lunch or dinner, I find it's great to order several dishes for the table to split as opposed to getting your own entrees. Some of my favorites are the scallion pancakes, pork xiao long bao (soup dumplings), short rib/shrimp dan mein, and the broccoli and string beans. Everything that I've tried here is delicious and filled with flavor! I will continue coming back here for the food, but this place would be perfect if they hired a few more servers. Give this place a try!

Yelp
This is our safe haven. Whenever we have bad food we end up coming here to lift our spirits and fill our tummy's up with love! The service is amazing, full of lovely young men and women who are just the kindest. The building is also super beautiful with a perfect ambiance of nice music and it just feels clean. Keep up the great work guys we love you! #Gtrackfree

Yelp
Food, service & ambience were perfect for a Sunday get-together with friends. I liked everything that we ordered. The service was attentive without being intrusive. The ambience was clean and modern with a minimalist design.

Yelp
Been to Dan's several times at this location and the one in Manhattan Village. The food is great and the staff is friendly, also like the ambiance and the outdoor seating! In terms of food, the soup dumplings and the short rib Dan mein are always ordered! Great spot for dinner and their lunch menu is pretty good as well. I always like bringing people from out of town to try Dan's, it's become one of my favorite spots!

Yelp
Dan is a great place if you are looking for high quality and relatively cheap soup dumplings/Chinese. People say it rivals Din Tai Fung and I definitely agree! Good place to go if you want to share a bunch of apps/dishes. I enjoyed everything I tried (specifically the scallion pancakes) and the staff was super nice. A staple on Sawtelle for sure!

Yelp
Location is awesome, right in the heart of sawtelle. Food always tastes great and service is always prompt. Their soup and pan fried dumplings are some of the best I've ever had. Also the servers and host are so kind every time my friends and I visit! Great restaurant, couldn't recommend enough.

Yelp
Chinese food isn't my first choice when I go to Sawtelle, but if other places are too busy or I'm craving noodles or dumplings, then Dan Modern Chinese will hit the spot. There's usually no wait, and the food is very good. I highly recommend the shrimp or short rib noodles (love the thick noodles), crab fried rice, and any of the XLB. I would skip the beef roll (I'm spoiled by 101 Noodle's beef roll). Prices are a tad high for Chinese food, but this is West LA, not SGV. Yes, you can get cheaper Chinese food in the area, but the food is probably better quality here. I didn't think anything was too oily, not even the noodles or fried rice. No headaches or food coma after the meal. Service was good. The manager came to check on us, and food came out fast. There's indoor and limited outdoor seating. Good, solid choice if you want Chinese food or don't want to wait an hour for other restaurants on Sawtelle.
