Where to Eat in West Philadelphia and University City | Eater Philly

"A neon-lit dining room in the back of an Indian grocery store is home to some of the city’s most vibrant Punjabi eats. Choose from an extensive menu of veggie or meat options, don’t forget the paratha, and enjoy an affordable and no-nonsense meal served without ceremony on a styrofoam plate." - Caroline Coral

Never seen that type of bad service in my whole life. Three people working in the store everybody busy with their phone. I’m walking around 15 minutes. Nobody help me. I’m asking something. They said they don’t have it then I checked 10 more minutes and I find out the same product. It is shamed.

Store is clean compared to the other Indian stores around. Price is also decent. Terrible customer service though. No one knows where anything is but yet there’s someone walking around.

It used to be a good quality Indian store with cheap prices but as they made customers their quality went downhill. A lot I mean a lot of their stuff is expired including kids snacks , frozen food, cookies, sauces etc etc. the shop owner n his son both are super rude. And they some how manage to charge extra money on your card I don’t know how they do it so professionally. I go there with my kids n while my attention is not on the transaction while checking out they quietly add more charges. N when I go home n do the math it comes out that they this fraud. Never going there again. Worst Indian store in town

In the heart of downtown, I first discovered Dana Mandi on Chestnut Street, where the aroma of Paronthe Makhan naal and a steaming cup of tea delighted my senses. Five years later, in a quest to revisit this culinary haven, I learned it had relocated to Upper Darby. Determined to share the magic with my parents on our journey from DC to New York, I was met with the unfortunate news of its closure due to property loss from floods and a dwindling customer base. Despite adversity, the resilient owner, Sardar Ji, graciously welcomed us into the nearly completed party hall. As his cherished guests, we were treated not merely as customers but as members of his extended family. Serving us freshly brewed tea from their kitchen downstairs, he exuded warmth and hospitality. Inspired by his resilience, I inquired about an alternative place nearby, and in response, he provided not just information but an experience that went beyond expectations. Even in the face of personal and professional setbacks, Sardar Ji's dedication to hospitality shone through. I left not only with groceries for my home but also with a deep appreciation for the kindness and strength displayed by this local business owner. I urge everyone to offer them a chance to revive and flourish, contributing to the resilience of our local communities. May health and wealth grace Sardar Ji and his family. I eagerly anticipate returning countless times, should fate allow.

Best rice...price went up after COVID 19 hits the World. So we all feel the pinch but hey it's life and we still here with the grace of God and the Angels. Don't complain. Be grateful.

Google
One if the biggest Indian grocery selections in the area. Good service and clean store. Like any import store, check expiration dates for long shelf life items like pickles and jams.

Yelp
Just awesome Indian offerings. Family owned business. New banquet hall just opened upstairs.

Yelp
I visited with my friends here two months ago and I was happy I made a choice to come here except Dana Mandi. This store is very big and has way better options available. The restaurant in the basement provides the best home made food taste. We did get some food packed for the next day as well. We are here today and it's a routine now for Indian grocery shopping and good Indian fresh meals.

Yelp
STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE IN THESE DAYS OF COVID. I initially had a positive impression of Dana Mandi, as they let me do a curbside pickup. However, yesterday I actually went to the store, and am now worried about what I might have been exposed to. The owner insisted that I wear gloves, and I readily did so. But neither he nor anyone else in the store wore a mask, even after I reminded him of this. The woman who rang me up wasn't wearing one either even though there no shield and her face was quite close to mine. NOT DONE
