Where to Eat in Footscray, Melbourne’s Most Exciting Food Neighborhood | Eater

"A wholesaler-retailer with tanks full of live lobsters, mud crabs, yabbies, oysters, pippies, scallops, sea urchin and other seasonal seafood; fishmongers will retrieve, kill and clean purchases on the spot, and keeping bivalves alive to shuck at home saves money." - Jess Ho

First time here. As soon as I walked in, I was impressed with this place. The fish tanks were clean, the variety of oysters were eye catching. And how they hang the salmons in those special fridges was worth a visit. We had a dozen oyster and they were very fresh. The service was a bit hit and miss. Our oyster was sitting at the counter for a while while we were sitting outside. We were not told they were ready. Putting that aside, it is worth a visit.

I had a very bad experience yesterday. I ordered a dozen of oysters and one piece of Abalone because of my wife's birthday. We were waiting for the takeaway and one of the staffs gave a bag without saying a word so I thought it was ready so we left. After I got home, they did not pack abalone so I called. He shouted me and blamed me saying " YOU LEFT BEFORE YOU GET ABALONE, YOU NEED TO COME TO PICK UP" I was super surprised that he shouted right away and I asked him gentaly for a refund but he only said " NO YOU LEFT SO THERE IS NO REFUNDS" All the other stores for takeaway, you would expect that you will receive everthing in a bag when you are handed in, he did not say any words when he gave it to me. so I think it is common for me to leave when you receive a takeaway. We rented a car because it was my wife's brithday, we live 1 hour drive away from the store, so no way to go back. We ocasionally go there to get a fresh seafood, we liked it here. But how they treated a customer was dissappoiting. We were simply sad and we just wanted to have a good day with having seafood which my wife loves. We will never go back here. If you have other options to get Seafood, I would highly reccommend that you should go other seafood stores.

We were impressed with the variety of oysters available. All freshly shucked to order. We were greeted by a friendly lady and she explained how things worked in the shop and suggested the type of oysters to order based on our preferences. We had a mixed dozen of oysters and half a dozen of cooked oysters. They were all very tasty. Highly recommend this place!

Best seafood shop in Melbourne. Most of thing still alive. Great selection of oyster. I bought a crab and crab full of meat. Very good quality. The price is not cheap but you get what you pay for. The lady owner at oyster bar super friendly

Came to try the oyster bar for the first time. The quality of the oysters were great and was a reasonable price. Only the service was a bit lacking and messy. We spent our first few minutes wondering where and how to order (the window out the front was for pick up only), went inside to see the selection of oysters and the guys there shucking just ignored us for the most part. (Also why we were wondering where to order.) Had to ask the lady that was serving at the window again who or where to go to order, and was asked if it was eat-in or take away. We said eat-in. She ended up taking our order and went to a set of scales near one of the tanks to place my order. Gave me a sticker with the pricing and directed me to pay at another counter, then wait outside at the seating area. Paid and got the receipt which had no indication of the type of oysters (Tasmanian Boomer Bay) we ordered or order number. Still we went and waited by the seats. When our order was ready for pick-up, it was prepped for take-away, even though we said eat-in. The receipt we had didn't have any indication that it was for an eat-in order (even though we made that clear at the beginning). We then spent some time standing by the window (because she had already taken my receipt) whilst they prepped the oysters for eat-in and moved them to a platter. That part of the process was just the lady asking one of the shuckers to move it to a platter and being ignored for a few minutes whilst they did something else or serve other customers. All in all, we got our order and the oysters were fresh and delicious, but the entire ordering and order collection process was messy and mildly stressful - which seemed to be the case for the people working there as well since it seemed like chaos. I think the people working and serving fully intended to provide a good service, but it's easy for communication to be lost when it's mainly relying on their memory or verbal communication between the service window and the people shucking and preparing the orders in a busy environment. All that's needed is a clear ticketed number system of some form. I'd still recommend this place because the seafood is brilliant, but until they have their processes for ordering and collection made clearer, I wouldn't be surprised if other people receive a similar service experience.

Bit pricey so 4 stars but the quality of the food looks great. Very impressed by the display. No fish smell in the shop so must be fresh. So many varieties of oysters! I bought a big jar of salmon roe, and I think it's slightly cheaper than I usually get. They sell not only fish but all sorts of Wagyu too.

Without a doubt the best place for fresh seafood. I always come here to get oysters as they have a variety of them. Lobsters here are also 10 out of 10 and so well-priced. Staff are very kind and knowledgeable and always give me the best recommendation.

So fresh & Yummy! Quality is definitely there, being a Māori living in Melbourne I’m so happy to have found a place that has decent seafood at a decent price! Only downfall was our Kina (sea urchin) got washed in fresh water when we asked them not to - ruins the taste were happy to cop a shell or spike if it means the salty sea taste is still there! Otherwise once we communicated we don’t want our seafood washed with fresh water everything else was awesome. Definitely will be back

Yelp
Ordered 6kg of fish priced at roughly $20 per kilo, I was told to come back in half an hour after they've gutted and prepared the fish. It was not ready for nearly one hour and that wasn't even the worst of it. The order came to over $300 ($50 a kilo) and they claimed to have misheard the order and I still had to pay for it. They had not told me the price nor showed me the supposedly fresh/live fish before (could have been old stock). Would not recommend this place to anyone. TLDR: Sneaky fishery management dupes unsuspecting customer.
