The 38 Best Restaurants in Vancouver, Canada | Eater

"Line up for one of the city’s finest Italian-style sandwiches down on Robson Street, made on Tuscan schiacciata bread (essentially like a squashed focaccia). My favorite is the mortazza, layered with spicy mortadella, herbaceous basil spread, pistachio crumble, and creamy stracciatella cheese, but the absurdly cheesy grilled “Formaggi x4” comes a close second. Add a pistachio cannoli to your order for dessert. Know before you go: Skip the lines and order online, then take that perfect sandwich across the street to the city library and head up to the 9th floor to the Phillips, Hager and North Garden to enjoy rooftop views surrounded by honeysuckle and roses." - Nikki Bayley

Dante Italian Sandwich

Google
Dante Italian sandwich (my favorite one is the Inferno 🤤) is genuinely great, with fresh ingredients, generous portions, and amazing flavor every time. The price increase is hard to ignore; going from $14 to $18 in less than a year feels like a big jump. The quality is still there, but the new price definitely makes it less affordable. That said, it’s still my favorite sandwich 🤩🤩🤩

Google
actually found Dante Sandwich through a Vancouver podcast called Battle Royale with Cheese – they were raving about it, so I decided to check it out one afternoon. I got there around 11:45, just before the lunch rush, and managed to grab a seat. Service was good, and I could see the line steadily growing while I waited for my order. I went for the veggie sandwich and it was absolutely delicious. The cheese was spot on, everything tasted super fresh, and the bread (which was a new type for me) was incredible which I knew to expect it thanks to the podcast, but it still impressed me. It paired perfectly with the Diet Coke I had. Honestly, this might be one of the best Italian sandwiches I’ve had in Vancouver, maybe anywhere. I’ll definitely be back to try some of their other options. Highly recommend!

Google
The location can get quite busy, but I am amazed by how efficient and personable all the staff working are. They're masters at ensuring order and accuracy in what could be a chaotic small space. You enter the line up to order on your left, then move to the right hand side waiting for them to call out your number. You won't be waiting long, even if its busy. We ordered the formaggi x4 and the tacchino e pesto sandwiches. The grilled sandwiches take 5-7 minutes where the non grilled are made in an impressive time. While the Formaggi was lacking in flavour (only 1 bite with Onion taste), the tacchino made up for it with its deep flavour profile.

Google
I got the Inferno for ToGo and didn’t wait that long for my order. Paid $20+ tips .. the price was decent for a downtown location.. Food is okay for me .. Atmosphere is clean and music is cute …

Google
I have been quite a fan of these Tuscan sandwiches lately. It is such a refreshing sight to see one shop in Vancouver. The shop took over a spot that was my mailbox place I was a customer of the last 20+ years lol. That was bitter sweet. Now the sandwich. Italiana. The prosciutto crudo and cotto provided a balance of taste between the 2 cured meat protein. I was not a fan of the cream cheese flavor. There was a slight hint of tartness reminding me of a grocery mayo flavor. The sandwich was not too bad, but I was just not that impressed overall. I have had better mind blowing ones before. I will try the other variety as I go..

Google
Ran in here at 1230 on a Friday and was out with an Italiana sandwich in less than ten minutes. Great sandwich! Excellent bread and the flavors are delicious. Definitely recommend it for a snack or meal! It was so good we came back the next day.

Google
Dante Taya Restaurant is known for its Italian sliced meat sandwiches. I ordered the mortadella, and my sister had the eggplant. The bread was fresh, but I found my sandwich could have used more meat to really stand out. They offer a wide variety of sliced meat options, and the place has a friendly vibe with an outdoor balcony facing the library. Overall, it wasn’t a very memorable experience.

Google
Dante is just INCREDIBLE . The ingredients taste unbelievably fresh, packed with a generous amount of protein, and the price is genuinely great for what you get. Honestly, it’s even better than anything I’ve tried on Commercial Drive, and the flavour takes me straight back to Rome. I absolutely love it.

Yelp
Dante Italian Sandwich makes an incredible sandwich. I got the Mortazza, which comes with mortadella, stracciatella cheese, basil spread, pistachio crumble, and arugula and this combination was honestly insane. The stracciatella was soft and melty, the basil spread added the perfect little kick, and the pistachio crumble gave it this amazing crunchy texture that tied everything together. It felt indulgent but balanced, and every bite tasted different in the best way. If you're in downtown Vancouver and craving a really well-crafted sandwich, Dante is absolutely worth a stop.

Yelp
How fun and efficient this place is!! Look for the Vespa outside. This shop is small so take it to go! They are so well laid out - left to order, right to pick up! So many options to choose and a few veg which I appreciate! I got the formaggi (mozzarella, provolone, stracciatella, grana padano, red onion). I wanted to add toppings but you can only add for certain sandwiches. It was a bit confusing but the grilled sandwiches are the ones you can't alter! They have a list of toppings and spreads to add for the other sandwiches. Sandwich was huge and so cheesy! It was delicious and I paired it with chilli oil (my own) which cut the richness. This sandwich would do well with tomatoes, basil spread, and arugula. Service is great and efficient! They have it down pat!!

Yelp
I can't recall which sandwiches we got but we asked for the two recommended ones. The staff were really nice and I really like the outdoor patio during the summer. The sandwiches are pretty good & it's super filling so you can definitely just share 1 between two people. I don't think I'll come back here again, I just came to try cause people over hyped it. Their sandwiches are pretty standard but not worth the price, cause it's almost $20/sandwich. I recommend trying here at least once, otherwise I'll skip it.

Yelp
monte cristo sandwich ($14.50): fresh, hot and crispy exterior! the cheese didn't seem fully melted (i bit into a couple hard chunks) but overall i liked it! it was also kinda thin and small for the price, i would have loved to see more prosciutto in there.
google avatar

Anna A.

Yelp
decided to get a quick lunch and stopped by this popular italian sandwich shop I personally prefer grilled sandwiches so i chose the monte cristo grilled sandwich with prosciutto cotto, provolone and sundried tomatoes, which are all my favorite ingredients the sandwich has good amount and cheese and has melted perfectly. Great combo with the sundried tomatoes The inhouse made bread was also has a great texture after grilling too. Will definitely go back to try others

Yelp
Pretty tasty. One-handed sandwich, a bit too salty (obviously, with cured meat and truffle spread), a bit pricey for the portion. But, freshly baked bread, sharp rucola, and creamy strachiatella pretty much in balance. And, quickly made-to-order sandwiches.

Yelp
Shop had a cute ambiance with Italian music and street decor. Got the mortazza one of their most popular sandwiches. It was tasty, and ingredients were fresh. I especially enjoyed the bread. I do wish the toppings were more evenly spread throughout the sandwich for a tasty bite every time. Some bites did not have all ingredients in it to give the best flavour and were missing cheese or pistachio in it - making it less enjoyable

Yelp
I honestly stumbled onto this place after a long wander through the city, and man, am I glad I did. This spot pops right out on the streets of Vancouver -- you can practically smell the good decisions being made inside. The meats? Fresh. The sandwiches? Absolute perfection. We tried the Inferno and the Caprese on fresh focaccia, and both were chef's kiss. Quick service, super friendly staff, great music, and the outdoor seating hit just right on a bright, warm fall day. Couldn't have planned it better if I tried. Excellent all around!

Yelp
Great, personable service and very tasty sandwiches. The husband and I ordered two to share, the Italiana and the Inferna. The staff was kind in splitting the generously-sized sandwiches in half for us. Our favourite was the Inferna - the flavours popped. The meats were spicy and savory, with the arugula adding its own note of crunch and pleasant bitterness. The cheese was oozy, extremely rich and a nice contrast to everything else. The focaccia was good but perhaps a bit too toasted for our liking - its sharp edges were uncomfortable to eat. Net time I'd ask for the bread to be untoasted. The Italiana's flavours were well-balanced, although muted in comparison. Both were composed of high-quality, extremely fresh ingredients. We enjoyed our lunch on one of the little outside tables. Cheerful, classic Italian songs could be heard via the sound system, adding to the ambience and our overall experience.

Yelp
I love schiacciata sandwiches and they were a highlight when I was in Italy, particularly Florence. So I was excited when this place opened up serving this, and with the owner's pizza places in town which Ive liked for years, I had high hopes. I got a sandwich for takeout. Took it home to eat at early dinner time, near closing. Service was fine. Nothing to really comment on for takeout. I had a few problems with the sandwich: the bread didnt taste very fresh - maybe its because it was end of day. I wouldnt call it stale, because it was not. But it did not taste fresh out of the oven, and had lost some of its texture. A tad dense on the inside and crumbly, the outside had less crunch than I would like but it was there. I ordered the Mortadella sandwich. The sauce was good, pistachio crumble was very light though and cant really taste it. The mortadella was WAY too salty, and this was the biggest downfall of the sandwich. The flavour profile of this sandwich was quite flat. The sauce was bland, and all you taste is salt + arugula. The sandwiches are big, and the amount of meat is generous. The pricing is on the high side which I have no problems with if the quality of every component was excellent. Overall this is promising. They just need to tweak their seasoning and ratios a bit. The sandwich I had is a solid 3/5, but I can see the potential in making it better. This is why I would come back, try a different time of day, different sandwich.

Yelp
Super cute inside! They have maybe 15 sandwiches to choose from around $14-$17 each. I got the Toscana and was enough for 2 people to share. The bread was perfect and fresh! I also ordered the arugula salad but would suggest skipping that, at $8 for a small bowl it had barely enough dressing and a few onions/capers on it. It was for sure busy on a weekday but they had seats inside and out. For sure recommend!

Yelp
A good Italian sandwich shop. Resembles the ones in Italy. My review is for to-go order, not in-dining. Service was fast. ambiance was very casual and had the Italian feel. They slice the meat and made to order once you have placed an order. We got the Italian sandwiches togo to bring onto the train for later. The sandwich was good to eat when we got on the train. I ordered the Italiano sandwich with truffle oil. It was pretty good, not too overpowering from the truffle. My bread did get a little soggy but was still good to eat. Also tried the Mortazza sandwich and that was my favorite out of the two. The Mortazza came with mortadella, basil spread, arugula and pistachio crumble. I enjoyed the pistachio crumble, gave the sandwich that extra crunch. The focaccia bread was good and toasted. Overall, the sandwich would've been better eaten right then. Would highly recommend!

Yelp
Very delicious veggie sandwich here, absolutely loaded with roasted, fresh, and pickled vegetables plus fresh mozzarella and crumbled taralli (crackers). I really enjoyed every single ingredient on this sandwich. The taralli added a unique crunch and flavour. The sandwiches look expensive, but they're huge. The only downside was that it was so messy that it was difficult to eat because everything kept falling out. I also got a pistachio cannoli. This was really good too - the shell was crispy and fresh, and the filling contained both a layer of candied chopped pistachios and pistachio cream. The cannoli are minis which works well since the sandwiches are so big. I was there around 2:30, after the lunch rush, so there wasn't much of a wait, and I was able to grab one of their outdoor tables. It's a small place with not much in the way of decoration except for the motorbike outside, but they were playing cheerful, kind of cheesy Italian music that I thought was really cute.

Yelp
The sandwiches may be pricey, but they taste really good. They seriously load it with meat and I think the serving size is quite generous. If you're not feeling too hungry, I'd recommend sharing it with someone. I also haven't tasted anything like it before so I'll be coming back when I crave Italian sandwiches!

Yelp
4.5/5 I was really excited to try this new Italian sandwich spot after seeing it all over my social media I did go around 12ish and there was a long wait due to all the hype around their recent opening -- would advise waiting a few weeks or perhaps trying an off peak time. I got the Italiana I knew for sure I had to have prosciutto in my sandwich The amount of prosciutto did not disappoint, there was quite a bit. The inside was coated with this creamy white cheese that resembled the inside of burrata -- as well as truffle spread and arugula. While simple ingredients and a bit more than I'd usually pay for lunch (almost $16), it was quite tasty and filling since I was able to save 30% of it for dinner. The only caveat would be even though they toast the bread, it cools down pretty quickly (a few minutes after getting it, it wasn't warm anymore) and that it's a bit hard to chew through the meat/arugula. I'd definitely be curious to try their grilled sandwich selection and cannoli though, seems to be a quality spot

Yelp
Wonderful sandwiches with fresh ingredients and quality meats. It was quite busy and their system for calling out orders could be improved a bit since I could see many people not hearing their numbers and having to go up and ask the counter. However, once you were able to get your hands on the sandwich it was delicious. The ratio of meat to bread is important and they got that down. Great spot for a quick bite to go since there are only a few small tables in the place.

Yelp
I'm glad I finally got to try this place! It's just a couple of blocks from my apartment, but since it's only open during lunch hours, I'm usually not around when it's open. I stopped by around 12:30 and found a short line to order, but a much longer wait for food. I ordered the Italiana to go. The shop itself is quite small, so if you plan to dine in, expect it to get crowded during peak lunch hours. The bread was a standout--great flavor with hints of salt and olive oil. The prosciutto was quite chewy, so I'd recommend cutting the sandwich in half for easier eating. It's a big, rich sandwich, and splitting it with a friend makes it much more manageab

Yelp
One of the best sammy spots anywhere. Huge, delicious, amazing ingredients and bread. Every bite is incredible. 1 sandwich could almost feed 2 people, but it's so good you won't want to share.

Yelp
Today was my first visit. I ordered to-go. I wanted to try their grilled sandwiches so I ordered the MONTE CRISTO It was good but not great. I probably wouldn't order it again BUT I definitely want to go back and try some of their "non-grilled" sandwiches that others seems to really like :) Another thing with their grilled sandwich. They weren't that busy (about 3x other people ahead of me) when I went but my sandwich took a while. If you do decide to order a grill sandwich maybe pre-order online so you won't have to wait too long (especially if you want to grab something quick).

Yelp
Great restaurant, staff was very nice! Ate here 2x on my trip and had a great time, sandwiches are good size and fulfilling ~ better than subway

Yelp
Super cute new italian sandwich place! The interior was really cute and I loved the artwork on the sides. We ordered the Americano and Inferno sandwich for $15 each and it was so delicious and worth the price! The sandwiches are huge. I ordered mine at 1pm and I'm still trying to finish it right now at 7pm. Service was quick and they were all very friendly, I would definitely take a trip down here if you're around the area. :)

Yelp
This is a great modern Italian sandwich shop. Parking is across the road at the library is plentiful, but street parking not so much. The sandwhiches are very good so drop in and try one you won't leave hungry!

Yelp
I tried the Toscana, and yes, we have to come back. It is delicious sandwich to perfection. Love it

Yelp
We ordered the vegetarian sandwich ( a little soggy but packed with eggplant, zucchini, arugula and filled with flavor) and the Monti Christo ( delicious and perfect amount of cheese and meat). I'd definitely go back!

Yelp
2.5 the house made schiacciata bread is really commendable. It was nicely toasted, crispy and added much to the texture but it was overpowering The balance of flavours in their sandwiches across the board need to be rethought through. I could not finish 1 sandwich by itself, it was overly salty, singular in taste and did not want to save it for next time. I've been there 3 times for different sandwiches and they generally tasted the same- salty, crusty heavy, tiring. The following thoughts always raced through my mind- some hot soup on the side, or some fresh herbs like basil to introduce more flavour, or less salty meat, or meats folded so it's not as densely packed or more arugula or a slice of pickle, or even a non- toasted, soft, fluffy, unsalted bread. I really want this place to work.

Linda R.

Yelp
The sandwiches were huge and delicious! My one recommendation would be to cut them in half, whole is a lot to handle!

Nicole B.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches. An absolute must have at at place on Robson. Fresh ingredients and excellent service.

Osanne C.

Yelp
The sandwich was really, made me feel like I was in Italy with those true and rich Italian products. I had to wait quite a long time to get my sandwich because of an issue with the printer but I got compensated with a free cannolo which I really appreciate. I recommend!

DoubleEh E.

Yelp
Very good sandwich. The bread is the key. Baked fresh daily. Any negative comments by others about the bread are unfounded. They don't really understand. We split it as they are quite large.
google avatar

Thang P.

Yelp
Enjoyable food but long lines. Meats and bread were good quality and the price was reasonable. I would recommend this place to anyone wanting a tasty and filling sandwich but don't want a traditional American hoggie or sub. The sandwiches are more basic but the ingredient's really shine.
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing new Italian-style sandwich place near the Vancouver Public Library that is way ahead of its nearest competitor: fresh ingredients, a sandwich that's actually filing, and amazing staff. The same group that brought us Via Tevere, Straight Outta Brooklyn Pizza, and Il Saltimbocca have delivered another hit. Will eventually turn into a nice casual atmosphere but the first day was definitely nuts with people lining out the door to have their sandwiches and it was totally worth the wait for me.

Cody F.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. Service was good and everyone was nice. They have a ton of different sandwiches so look at the menu before you go or you'll be looking at the wall for 10 minutes trying to decide.

Jon G.

Yelp
Was so excited to try this place. Walked 1/2hr to get there, and waited in line. I was disappointed from the high price, to the extremely s as key sandwich with the bland flavorless cheese. Take some advice from an Italian you should use provolone, it would give your sandwiches so much more flavorful. Rather than salty neat and bland cheese.

Shelley D.

Yelp
The food was amazing! The service was great and was a great spot to eat lunch. I had the tacchino e pesto.
