Dante Review - Greenwich Village - New York - The Infatuation

"Dante is a new restaurant that’s not entirely a new restaurant. This space on MacDougal Street was home to Caffe Dante for over 100 years, only to recently close, much to the dismay of many Village residents who probably hate you because you are new here. Yes, even though you moved to the city in 2003. The business has since been taken over by some Australians, and we’d love to call it a “reboot” or “revamp” or whatever the term is for when a restaurant changes completely except for the name, but we never visited original before it closed. So, we can’t tell you how this new establishment compares to Caffe Dante the first. What we can tell you is that whatever Caffe Dante was to its oldest and most loyal patrons, this new restaurant will hopefully be for a new generation of people. And as far as we can tell, Dante will be to small plates and cocktails what Blue Stone Lane is to breakfast and coffee for the young and social in this town. Neither place does anything particularly inventive on paper, but few know how to make things simultaneously look and taste as good. New Dante is an aesthetically appealing spot best saved for nights when you’ll probably drink as much as you’ll eat. Not because the cocktails are better than the food - both menus have very high highlights. Moreso because Dante is a lively spot where people gather, whether it be for a casual meetup with friends, a first date where a full sit down dinner is probably going to be awkward, or a final stop for a negroni nightcap after dinner somewhere else. You can also use it during the day for a casual meetup of a different kind - coffee or brunch here are good decisions for a rendezvous when the sun is up. Just know that you’ll probably be tempted to do some day drinking. Whatever you use Dante for, be glad that it’s here, for now. Because something else will eventually take its place. We just hope that when that time comes, we’ll still be around to complain about it. And so goes the circle of life. Food Rundown Octopus, Hummus & Black Olive Crudo A simple and delicious little plate of octopus atop some hummus. You’re going to order one, and then you’ll have a few bites and realize that you’re going to need two. Plan on it. Vongole Soup A note to Japan, Italy, and their respective representatives: the fact that you let some Australians figure out how to combine linguine vongole and ramen and create the world’s greatest soup is a shame and a travesty. This is hot and rich and delicious and absolutely must be ordered. Burrata Excellent burrata cheese, and an excellent roasted and skinned tomato to eat it with. Another must order. San Daniele & Figs What’s not to like about dragging aged prosciutto and figs though some honey while you sip on a negroni? Eat this with a fork and you’re probably getting banished. If not from the restaurant, from this website. Cold Angel Hair Pasta Salad If you can’t get your head around the glorious frankenstein of soup that we previously discussed, but you’re set on eating something noodle-related, this cold pasta salad is a good option. Especially if you’re looking to eat light. Dante Cioppino You wouldn’t expect a light, airy cafe like Dante to specialize excellent, hearty soups, but they seem to. This halibut cioppino is a worthy order and will definitely fill you up. Flatbreads This is the one section of the menu at Dante that we’d suggest you avoid. The flatbreads are fine if you’re just looking for something to soak up the extra three drinks you didn’t plan on having, but don’t expect anything beyond that. Negroni About as perfect as a Negroni gets. They are billed as being “on tap,” but most of the ones we’ve had were made on the spot. There’s also a full Negroni menu for different variations on the theme. Aperitivo #1 Aperitivo means “afternoon” in Italian, right? Because that’s when we’re going to be drinking these. Aperol, Lillet Blanc, Prosecco, passion fruit, mango, and a little bit of tequila just to keep you on your toes. All Day Bloody Mary See, time of day is important here. Luckily, you can drink this bloody mary any time of day you please. It says so right on the label. Why? No idea. But we’re gonna follow the rules on this one." - Chris Stang

Google
We had the Dante menu, and we were not disappointed. The food is prepared right there before your eyes, and it is done with such care and love that you can taste. Fantastic service, excellent atmosphere, and the price for what you get - definitely on the low end. Thank you for this amazing experience!

I had the flat fish course at 7,700 yen and everything was exquisite - from the onions to the corn soup and Sakura ice-cream. Even the fried rice was special. The fish fell off the bone beautifully and melted in my mouth. My wife had the wagyu beef and experienced similar ecstasy. Michael Jackson showed great judgement here. Certainly an experience not to be missed.

My favorite teppanyaki place in Akasaka area. A place to absorb the local culture and yet is foreigner and kids friendly. Remember to make a reservation through their hassle free portal.

The food is exceptional, with perfectly cooked meats, fresh seafood, and vegetables. Service is impeccable; the staff is attentive and friendly. The house sake was delicious. I'd easily rate this place higher than a 4.4. Absolutely recommend it.

Everything was amazing. Prices are decent compared with other similar concept tepenyaki restaurants. You can see Japanese locals in other tables so this is definitely not a tourist trap,

Such a fun experience. The authentic version of hibachi from the US. Spoiler- No shrimp flips of onion volcanoes. But the food is incredible

Yelp
I thought I was in for a Benihana experience. But, I was surprised to learn how different my experience was and I have to say I really really enjoyed it. First, Dante is a basement restaurant. Very no frills. You do not get the show that you get at Benihana, which was even better me. There are several coursed menu (and I believe some a la carte items). I opted for one of the coursed menu. Then, watched the chef do his magic. All of the food was sooo tasty. The shrimp was delicious, the steak was the perfect cook, and the veggies cooked to perfection. It was one of my last meals in Tokyo and definitely enjoyed my time here. Also, fun fact, Michael Jackson came here. They have photos of MJ around the restaurant. All in all, it was an enjoyable time for me and I had a good time here.

Yelp
After a little searching we decided to give Dante a try. All in all it's worth the 5 stars, it's not perfect but solid enough to push it over the top. I'd call it a solid 4.5 and you're not going to be disappointed. We would down into the basement establishment and were warmly greeted. It's a small place with 4 grill tables. We had a nice 4 seater in the corner and could observe all the other tables. We all ordered the Debye service, which turned out to be a good deal of food. We left totally full! The service started with a nice pumpkin and corn chowder. It was really lovely and we choose to have it warm but you can have it served chilled as well. An appetizer of grilled shrimp and scallops followed, obviously fresh and prepared really well. The vegetable corse included Japanese sweet potatoes, onion, and some well seasoned greens. All were a really nice combination leading up to the steak. The steak came and we watched as it was cooked with precision. Well seasoned and exactly to the medium rare prep that we ordered. It was melt in your mouth tender and the star of the show. Honestly I know we didn't need more food, but the garlic rice came next. We weren't sure where we would put it but it was so delicious it disappeared. Just loads of flavor, the garlic really was prominent and we found somewhere for it :-) The course finished with a Lychee Sorbet and it was absolutely divine, a perfect close to the meal. All and all this is a great little spot with good people running the show. Don't expect an American style show. It's all about precision and getting a perfect meal!

Yelp
Cuisine: 6 Service: 7 Decor: 5 Value: 6 Overall: 6 A basement restaurant specializing in tappenyaki (often called hibachi in the US) without the frills and thrills you get from the likes of Benihana. Food was pretty average and honestly I like the show antics of the Americanized hibachi restaurants. Some people think it's cheesy, but I think it certainly brings a bit more flare and excitement to the meal. Otherwise, it's just another chef cooking on a flat grill in front of you. Until you witness it for yourself, maybe you will not appreciate the entertainment and humor we have grown jaded to. All in all, a decent meal, but nothing I want to come back for.

Yelp
Fantastic place that served Michael Jackson back in the day. Options for beef are Australian and also Japanese. We did both and honestly the way our fantastic chef prepared it made not that much of a difference. Eggplant and pumpkin were great and the scallops were delicious too. At the end the peach ice cream topped off the night. Don't waste 2-3 times your money at the teppanyaki place at ANA. Walk 7 minutes and have a better experience

Yelp
Way better than any Benihana's, the way they cook it is similar but the way it tastes blows my mind. Would recommend anyone to eat here at least once when you're in Japan!!
