Dar Azawad (M'Hamid, Zagora) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Humans have long sought shelter from the hot Saharan sun in the palm oasis of M'Hamid El Ghizlane. Dar Azawad, a luxury hotel with low-lying adobe buildings blending in with the natural landscape, pays homage to generations of travelers, from nomads to sultans, who’ve passed through the desert. The simplest guest rooms are inspired by the cool comfort and simplicity of Berber tents, while others, with rustic wood-beamed ceilings, were designed to resemble modern casbahs. The largest suites are palatial, with private patios, colorful Zellige mosaics, and custom furnishings made by Moroccan craftsmen. The outdoor pool provides a refreshing escape, as does the traditional spa and hammam." - Tablet Hotels

Our experience in Dar Azawad was aboslutely horrible. |We were a group of 7 people. We specifically booked this hotel for our Taragalte festival experience. The official check-in time was at 2pm. We were only allowed to the (available!) rooms at 4 and 5pm. Some people had to be put together to change and shower. The staff was unprofessional and unwilling to find solutions and even answer our questions. We were sometimes received at the front desk with complete apathy, as if talking to bricks. The keys to the rooms were not provided and we had to ask for them twice. ||Breakfast was below any standard. Pancakes were finished at 8 while the kitchen closes at 10. Mise en place of the breakfast table we had to ask 3 times was only done for 3 people. Messy and unorganized breakfast. ||Swimming pool: old and dirty sunbeds from which there are only a few available. We had to book our group a day at the swimming pool in another hotel. ||Way overpriced for the services. I believe at least one star should be withdraws from this place.||We felt horribly received and are never ever coming back here.

First, I would like to say that I have lived in Morocco for 9 years. I've done extensive travel within the country.||||This hotel is not boutique. Some of the really lovely boutique hotels I have visited in Morocco include - in Marrakech: Les Deux Tours, Beldi Country Club, Riad Majala. This hotel does not come anywhere close to any of these.||||After driving from Ouarzazate, which is nearly 5 hours by car, there was no welcome (though, of course, they knew we were coming). Our room was not ready - it had food scraps on the table, linens wadded up and towels on the floor from the previous guest.||||Dinner was very limited, mainly consisting of chicken tajine and chicken brochette. This is Moroccan street food that you pay 60 dhm for anywhere in Morocco. This is not 'high-end'. Even our rosé was warm.||||The pool was freezing, even though they advertise that it is heated. And, it's tiny - the pictures on the website are misleading.||||We stated how disappointed we were to the management. On a positive note, our waiter did everything he could to improve our meal the next night - he was actually quite nice. We explained that we live in Morocco and that while all of the German and eastern European tourists might see nothing wrong with food / accommodations, we were not impressed. He admitted that it's just 'moving the masses through', which was a relief to hear someone admit it.||||Don't stay here, and by all means, do not organize any trip through a guy named Youssef +212 674 258 173; he is a criminal who took our money on the front end of the trip. ||||AVOID, AVOID, AVOID!

Glory of days past. This has been a nice hotel in the past, no doubt, but it has fallen in disrepair. Wood without paint, uncleaned pool, garden uncared for and hoses and cables everywhere. Lots of insects and spiders in the room and plumbing broken. There is a lot of personnel, some of which are friendly, but we had the least warm welcome since we arrived in Morocco a fortnight ago. A bit of a disappointment in this beautiful and friendly country. The beds and the breakfast were the only good points we can mention.

The hotel is very comfortable and beautiful: rooms, reception, garden, swimming pool, restaurant everything was made in authentic Moroccan style and very good taste. Breakfast is also very good and the team is amazing! Always ready to help and fulfill all your needs. Keltouma was extremely kind and efficient from the moment I sent my first e-mail full of doubts about the desert experience. Thank you very much!

In some respects this is the best of the five Riads that we have stayed in. The grounds are spacious with a huge pool and nicely landscaped. The room was large and well laid out. You could actually move around and the heat worked. There were chairs to sit on and a table to use. |The only downsides were the lack of hot enough water for a shower in the evening ( although it was much hotter in the morning) and the fact that the towels felt like coarse sandpaper. But the bed was comfortable and the staff was, as usual, friendly and welcoming. Besides, I don’t think there’s much of a choice in this area.

In its heyday, this must have been the jewel of the Sahara, but now it is looking a bit shabby and is in need of some maintenance. ||||It's just the little things like the grass is patchy in places or knee-high ... the paint is peeling off everything and there is a wobbly flagstone which everybody stands on - it would take minutes to fix, but nobody seems to care.||||As for our room - the decor inside was really nice, but the main shower head was clogged and unusable, the AC did not work and the bed was as hard as a rock - all easily sorted but not.||||The price of a room is high for Morocco and charging top rates and providing midrange is not good for repeat business or reputation.||||Having said this, the hotel is still charming and is in such a great location and we did enjoy our stay here. ||||The staff are friendly, the food was good and the view from the roof of the desert is great.||||I would dearly love to give this hotel a better review, but I just can't.

Had an amazing stay at Dar Azawad. I arrived late at night so didn't really see the hotel before the morning after. And I was stunned, both by the desert, and by the hotel, especially the beautiful decorations and interior design. The staff was also helpful and friendly, and the food really good. (Only negative point: There is only wifi in the lobby, not in the rooms)

Very difficult to fault this place being literally on the edge of the Sahara. Rooms are either single standing or semi-detached mud brick with lots of space and character. Good selection of quality food. Aircon if you need it but try to savour the cool breeze at night, most intoxicating. They also have good fridges judging by the readily available cold beers. Staff are always willing to please. Most recommended.
