"Dar Roumana is widely celebrated as having the best restaurant in Fes, and with goodreason. Its charming courtyard dining room—decorated with cream-colored upholsteryand tropical plants that complement the building’s original hand-cut zellij tiles, carved plaster, and painted-wood ceilings—is also rave-worthy. Arrive early enough to sip its signature pomegranate fizz from the crow’s nest, then settle in to indulge in a menu that fuses the flavors of Morocco with the finesse of classical French cuisine. Perennial favorites are the roast pumpkin salad with goat cheese, chilies, and coriander; braised local rabbit in mustard; and an elegant, bitter chocolate tart that could cause even the bistros of Paris to bristle with envy. Top tip: For a romantic winter meal, reserve the table by the fireplace."

Dar Roumana, Fes, Morocco - Explore & Book

"The ‘house of the pomegranate’ is a spectacular residence just inside the medina's upper walls, with biblical views from its crows nest over close-packed rooftops and minarets. It was only after moving in that US-born Jennifer discovered these views - and knew she’d struck gold. But she also worked hard for it. For 3 years she supervised the pain-staking restoration of its ornate, tall-ceilinged bedrooms. Minutely-carved wooden screens and stucco friezes were cleaned with toothpicks and wire wool; the splendid court gleams with blue-white Fassi tiling. Besides the burbling fountain is a ceremonial bartal (alcove), cosy with guides, city maps, a sleeping cat and Sebastian’s guitar. His flawless flamenco accompanies you as you wind up steep stairwells to the roof terrace, strewn with leather pouffes and inviting sofas. You can take dinner up here too (a happy fusion of local ingredients and high-end cooking), before lazing under the stars with a satisfied grin on your face. Highs The Royal Suite (Yasmina) is one of the most splendid riad-rooms in Fes; and the other 4 aren't far behind From the moment you arrive, Jennifer and Sebastian treat you as friends; they can take you on a guided tour of the medina and its food markets Dinners are fresh and varied, made with ingredients bought from the market first thing that morning You’re away from the medina’s hustle and bustle (even the dawn prayer call is more muted here), but only 10 minutes’ walk to the heart of the souks The roof terrace is a lovely space for post-souk relaxation, with its sheltered seating, raised crow’s nest and the rustle of a huge plane tree alongside Lows The ground-floor Roumana Suite lacks privacy (close windows and shutters before wandering about your room in a state of undress!) and air con A couple of bathrooms lack natural light It’s hard to find - though only 5 mins’ walk from either Bab Guissa or Ain Azlitan gates, where you can be met We've heard intermittent reports of noisy dogs and cockerels - bring ear plugs just in case" - Michael Cullen

Exceptional experience staying at Dar Roumana. Staff was eager to support in many ways including arranging transportation, personal walk through of city by map, food preparation, excellent communication for arrival and departure. Rooftop terrace is favorably located for a nearly unobstructed view of the Medina. Conveniently situated within reasonable walking distance to several key highlights of the city. Clean interior, quiet with beautiful adornments. Breakfast was delicious! Fruit, chocolate crepes, fried cakes, bread, jelly, cream cheese, butter, orange juice made fresh. We wish we could have met the owner. Very great experience staying at Dar Roumana.

We loved every minute of our 6 night visit. With only five rooms, it was quiet. The location of the Riad was excellent. Within five minutes walk of the souk, it was on the edge of the walled city so that we were able to have a beautiful ‘Tuscan’ walk in the hills the moment we passed through the nearby gate. Our room was grand with a pleasant balcony and good bathroom - simple but worked well. The roof terrace was big and very usable with great views over the city. The restaurant in the winter covered courtyard was excellent - well prepared European food with wine, and a very good European breakfast….A great escape!

I spent four nights here and loved every minute. The riad is a work of art and was one of the best places I stayed in Morocco. If it wasn’t my first trip to Fes I would have been happy staying in the riad all day and enjoying the ambiance. All of the staff was very kind and helpful. I ate in the restaurant twice and it was wonderful. What a privilege to have stayed here and I hope I can return.

We only went to the restaurant here and had an amazing experience. Within our two months in Morocco this place was definitely a highlight. The quality of the food was amazing, the host was a gentleman that knew what he was doing, the atmosphere was pure Moroccan beauty ánd we where invited to have a drink before dinner on the roof terrace which was spectaculair. Costs a bit more than the usual in Morocco but you (finally) get good worth for your money. It really made our first night in Fez one to remember.

Dar Roumana was the first riad we stayed at during our 2-week girls trip around Morocco, and it definitely raised the bar high! It's very beautifully restored, especially the courtyard where we had our afternoon tea and daily delicious breakfast spread accompanied by Eddy the resident tortoise! Location was also perfect, close enough to the main streets of the old medina but quiet enough that it was a relief to return to away from the hustle.||We also decided on a whim on our last night to have dinner at the restaurant, no regrets! They were flexible with our dining preferences and we were pleasantly surprised by the flavours and plating. My friend said it was better than the meals she had during her few days in Paris before arriving in Morocco.||Finally, not forgetting the best managing staff -- shout out to Nezha, Rachid and Mohamed for their attention to detail and incomparable hospitality! If you don't get around to asking the staff, the welcome booklet will tell you everything you need to know, even if you want to get Henna done in house. ||You won't be disappointed, I highly recommend (:

We didn’t stay but had a dinner at the restaurant - great looking riad, good service once we ordered, delicious food - we did the two course tasting menu and dessert separately; a good change from the local cuisine. It is on a little on the pricier side but good experience overall. One observation - when we arrived the staff who received us made it look like they were busier than they were, said will look if they have availability, made us review the menu and wait for table - which is typically not an issue but there was only one other table occupied, throughout our dinner we noticed not even half the tables were occupied at any given time, so not sure why he did all that fuss in the beginning when they clearly had not availability issues. Didn’t feel very welcomed.

Stayed a few nights in this exceptional Riad. No way near a 2-star hotel, easily a 4! Beautiful courtyard, beautiful rooms, feels like home thanks to the outstanding service! The view from the rooftop is worth the visit in itself! And wait till you find the turtle 😂 Small tweaks would make this place a 5/5 without any hesitation: -The bin in my room was not emptied on my arrival -For Morning breakfast, service is busy in the kitchen so doesn’t notice you get here, so you have to go find someone, easy fix with a camera in the kitchen -There are many flies especially in the morning Overall I highly recommend this place and will be coming back!

I’m putting this under the hotel but this review is just for the restaurant (which Google, it should have its own listing!) and it is out of this world - by far the best meal we’ve had so far. You walk down a very unassuming alley to get to a small door and once inside you see this incredibly beautiful restaurant - amazing setting. The service is just perfect - not pretentious but always there exactly when you need or want someone. And then there is the food - just spectacular - such great flavors, very creative, portions not too big; bread and olives to start were wonderful; we had a shrimp appetizer in this incredible sauce; followed by the sea bass in a sauce I wish I knew what it was because I’d make it every week. The dessert - a small cream brûlée with chocolate mousse adn pear sorbet (sounds awful) just worked so well together - not sure how they figured that out but it was awesome. They had a porter walk us the 15 minutes to/from our hotel so we would not get lost at night in the Medina - just such a great meal.
