"Located near the 72nd Street subway express stop, Dark Bullet is a Japanese izakaya operating undercover as a regular dive bar. Its sophisticated menu of Japanese bar snacks, with an emphasis on oysters, and the sake list with beginner’s instructions, make this a fabulous place for a drink and a snack. There’s a pool table in the back." - Robert Sietsema

"Dark Bullet is a Japanese gastropub that doubles as a sports bar — with big screen TVs and a pool table to prove it. The menu offers many dishes feature oysters, raw and cooked. Among the cooked, oysters are broiled on the half shell, fritters drizzled with soy and hot sauce, and even a pancake in an okonomiyaki vein served with ponzu." - Robert Sietsema

Hot Pot is delicious and very good for you in chilly weather. VERY peaceful environment and a secret menu from a sister restaurant nearby if you're seriously hungry. Insane Asian Whiskey and Sake selections as well!

I love visiting the Dark Bullet. The food is always great and the customer service from both the Bartender and Waiter are always amazing! It's not even a 4 star restaurant but you're treated like VIP. It has become one of our favorite places to get drinks and eats. If you're visiting New York City or if you already live in the area and want a great place to get drinks and good Asian Cuisine, stop by The Dark Bullet. You'll be so glad you did. Also the tables were set up with a lot of space between them. They follow the social distancing guidelines set by the CDC. Giving everyone 6 feet of space to enjoy themselves.

Google
A wonderful secret gem for fantastic Japanese food. Perfect place for a date night or friends group hangout. The drink menu (various sakes and beers and a decent selection of cocktails) was well priced. The ambiance is like a dive bar but don’t let that fool you! The Japanese food served is some of the best in Manhattan. The gyu donburi (angus beef rice bowl) was honestly incredible. The oysters were fresh and delicious. The garlic rock shrimp was also very delicious.

Google
I've been wanting to try this place and had an opportunity to visit. I was greeted and seated immediately.I had a lychee martini and oysters. The oysters were super fresh and my martini was absolutely perfect.I didn't catch the name of my servers but they were super cool and friendly. I felt like a regular and that is very special. The bar has a pretty nice menu and a pool table!!!!

Google
This place is like a best kept secret. I went because I wanted oysters one day and ended up there for hours. They have amazing Japanese-style sauces to accompany the oysters and none of their other small tapas-style seafood dishes disappointed. Great sake and friendly service as well.

Google
We had the east coast and west coast raw oysters and the baked oysters. The baked oysters weren't as good as the reviews claimed. All I could taste was the Chipotle mayo that is served on top (the orange stuff in the photo). The veggie fried rice was TRASH, which is why you didn't see it in my photos. It tasted like steamed rice but with veggies. The spicy shrimp was pretty good, if you like garlic and the flavor of sesame oil. FYI they aren't really spicy. The highlight wS indeed the East Coast and West Coast raw oysters. The East Coast oysters were smaller in size and had a twang, which I loved. The West Coast oysters were huge in comparison to the East Coast, but also had a clean and fresh taste. I liked them very much. The EC oysters were my absolute favorite. The drinks are served strong, and the billard table costs nothing to play. Just put your name on the list. I had a great time, will go back. However only for the raw oysters, drinks and free pool.

Google
They have the coldest Japanese beer (Sapporo maybe) on tap served in a very frosty mug. Good bar selection. Free pool table for customers. The scene at the pool table was really nice, with short wait times, skilled players who were pleasant and mature, and good available cues. This place is a lovely oasis of calm in a crowded city.

Went here late at night when most places were closing soon and not seating new customers. Love this restaurant, from service, to food, to drinks to ambiance. We sat at the bar and Winnie was our server. Very friendly and professional. We were welcomed in with a smile and felt comfortable right away Oyster variety was great. We tried Blackberry Oysters and Kumamoto Oysters. Very fresh! The Gyu Don is highly highly recommended. Drinks were just right. Great Sake selection. Winnie warned me about the "beer on the rock" and I underestimated what I was signing up for. That was the only thing I was not able to finish. It's not for everyone. Highly recommend! Will visit again when in the area.

Yelp
This place is a diamond in the ruff. The drinks are good and the bartenders are so much fun. Lenny and Lance are a dynamic duo behind the bar. This place makes you feel welcome. The Guinness pour is perfect!! Done I 3 parts, this is the way Guinness should be poured.

Michelle L.

Yelp
Such a cute, dim, and cozy little bar! My group and I stumbled upon this gem while walking around town, and we couldn't resist checking out their happy hour. The appetizers were tasty, and they had some unique drinks that we really enjoyed. One of them was a yuzu beer--so refreshing and different! The service was great, and the quirky bicycle bar stool seats added a fun touch to the experience. The decor was super cute, making it a great little find. Perfect spot to unwind and enjoy some interesting drinks and bites!

Linda W.

Yelp
Yup, still confused. So the drinks were fine. As was the food. It's more after a few hours I still couldn't figure out who frequents this place. And also, should I be here? Haha are these all just a bunch more random people here that made this eclectic group, or this is a normal thing

Tiff T.

Yelp
I stumbled on this gem one day with my partner and it was a electric vibe for sure. The bar is spacious and they had a pool table but what drew me to the bar was it is an oyster bar. I love oysters so they had a few choices to pick from to try west or east coast oysters. The service is mostly at the bar but it's a long bar with a good mount of seating.

Chelsea T.

Yelp
Such a great happy hour spot. Good food, good drinks and good service. We even brought the baby in with the stroller haha. I would definitely go back!

David T.

Yelp
I ordered the fried chicken and rice bowl. It was delicious. This isn't my typical type of dish so I was a bit skeptical but am so happy I listened to the servers recommendation. Great happy hour prices with a decent amount of options for happy hour drinks. I tried the Sangria- it could be better and I mean stronger. The flavor was fine but did it do the job? Not really. It's cute and casual- there's a pool table so I thought that was pretty awesome. Bathroom was clean too! Service is good.

Whitney D.

Yelp
Not sure what to think of this bar. Last night was my first time going there. I went with a group for an after show drinks. There is a pool table in the back and there is a nice bar area. I did nit have any food here only had a drink which was a gin and tonic which was ok. I wanted a beer but they only had one kind which was Sapporo. They had two nice size Tvs and good music though. I am not sure I would come back though.

Shae B.

Yelp
Yup ! Yup ! Yup ...This is a Friday ; I just came from a long work week of NYC and I need some good company with a snack type of vibe! So I seen a pool table in the back ( people were enjoying playing) and a huge bar ! I would say it's an upscale Dive bar atmosphere. The menu is a Japanese inspired theme ..but I came for the oysters ..They were so crisp and fresh ..I didn't really enjoy the pricing. That could just be me .I came In the early day ..BTW the Oysters were BOMB...I ventured lunch time and of course when I'm about to leave it began to get lively ..nice size screen tv's..I also just loved the cleanliness of this place ..I can smell at night it gets fun ..it closes at 1130 pm...grab a bestie and come through ..

Emma M.

Yelp
My family came in, and we shared 24 oysters, an order of edamame, and spicy edamame. I absolutely loved it here and they had both west-coast oysters and east-coast oysters. Both were delicious and I loved the sauces that they came with, both were gluten-free. I loved the food. The music was great, and the servers were accommodating to our small dog. The restaurant doesn't typically allow dogs but they let us in from the cold rain. They had great EDM music. The decor of the restaurant was pretty cool, and they had a pool table. They have a location coming closer to my parent's place next to the Dive Bar on 96 and Amsterdam. This will definitely be our new go-to takeout place.

Karen G.

Yelp
Great spot to get high quality oysters. Open between lunch and dinner so perfect for a quick bite.

Hannah O.

Yelp
This place... is interesting well for one, great happy hour deals.. $6 for a cold sake? Yes please. The food? Yes they are a japanese restaurant but I wouldn't come here if youre really looking for japanese food. Its more like a typical bar but instead of american food, youre getting japanese food. It's okay, but not great.

C Q.

Yelp
The menu has so many awesome choices, you can't go wrong. Our favorites include the seared salmon and the tartare. The staff always goes above and beyond.

Ashley F.

Yelp
It is a bar scene with a pool table and TVs playing sports games or the olympics. It is not the usual sit down restaurant. That bring said, it's clean and the menu options are authentic. I shared hot sake, unagi don (eel over rice) and 2 orders of the the healthy magic (basically sushi roll without rice). All very tasty and fresh. My husband and I sat at a small table next to the bar. Note they do not come to your table to take your order. My husband had to walk up to the bar to put in our order, and then they bring everything out to you. They're not very attentive like you would expect from a typical waitor. So, just know what kind of scene you are looking for before heading on in. It is absolutely worth checking out in my opinion. I enjoyed the scene entirely and would come back!

Yelp
Slow-ish service. Good sex on the beach. Amazing oysters... red sangria, pulpy, not so good. Waiting on some fries.

Ben F.

Yelp
Local spot with a bit of an identity crisis but good drinks and food options that hold their own. This spot is a dive bar meets sports bar meets college pub meets lounge with equally erratic music. The bar is backlit in neon interrupted by 2 large screen monitors broadcasting ESPN. There is a billiards table in the back. There is no display of oysters or sake that you may expect from the name. Even so, it is quite welcoming and the staff is friendly and attentive. The drinks are standard in quality and pricing although I did not sample many of the cocktails. The Sapporo was ice cold but avoid the version with yuzu and sea salt unless you like sours in terms of beer. The oysters here are somewhere between 4-5 dollars each. They are well shucked and presented. They taste fresh but I personally prefer ones that have more inherent flavor and brine. Most importantly, they did not serve any subpar oysters. The Chashu Don was delicious and smoky, served over rice and with some pickled daikon. It is a good example of the variety of food you can order here. If you are equal parts hungry and thirsty this is a solid spot that will satisfy both without compromising on either.

Liz H.

Yelp
Confusing theme and unattentive bartenders. I visited with my friend and nobody greeted us or sat us. We grabbed a seat anywhere and went to the bar to order understanding that it is a order at the counter... someone brought our food to our table but without utensils so I had to go to the bar to ask again.. i felt like everything was self-service but still I had to tip them like table service. Was planning to drink lots of sake but couldn't due to slow service...

Upper W.

Yelp
This is the best place to play pool - but don't tell because we don't want it to be overrun. Michael and Monica are the two bartenders and both a delight! We go there to hang, play pool, enjoy their red sangria & chat with the great customers!

Drew A.

Yelp
I just watched the Purdue final four game here and the service and food was awesome. Stephen a great dude and love the vibe in the place a mix of everyone and everyone super friendly when I come back to nyc on biz hanging out again

Milo C.

Yelp
I went here because of all of the great reviews. I really wanted to like it, but the food was honestly terrible. I can thinking we could get a couple of drinks and some appetizers. I ordered chicken, pork dumplings, sashimi, and donburi. The sashimi was cooked... which I've never seen before. The only good things were the sake, beers, and dumplings. Don't come for food. It's a cute ambiance and the servers were really nice. I hate leaving one star but know what you're getting.

Marie D.

Yelp
Ambiance is fun and friendly. There is a pool table. Food was good bar fare. Drinks were above average

Nikkie S.

Yelp
5/5 for a sports bar without greasy sports bar food! Huge TVs, friendly staff, CLEAN!! Not my fav Japanese food (but that's not the point). I like having options that are not typical "bar food" when I do want to go out to watch sports. Edamame over fries for me! Definitely a unique place, I enjoy going there!

Shashi R.

Yelp
happy hour is awesome, between 1-7pm. the raw west coast oysters were the best house sake is good. tuna tartare was nicely presented and tasty. db mule 7/10 hot sake 8/10 sangria 7/10 baked oysters 8/10 japanese mixed fries 7/10 tuna tartare 7/10 raw oyster west coast 9/10 oyster pancake 7/10

Yelp
I live in the neighborhood, and this restaurant/bar is fairly new. I walked by numerous times without entering because the outside appearance is rather ominous. However, based upon the menu and the good reviews, my Son and I decided to try it last night for dinner. I have to give it 5 stars because of the great food, but atmospherewise, it is really a dive bar. There is a regular size bar, which was full when we entered, and there are about 6 tables. We sat at the front table near the bar, and had some privacy, however the chairs were pretty uncomfortable. The place is not very large, and there is a pool table in the back. The acoustics are not good and, with maybe a dozen or more patrons, it was rather loud. During our meal, the lighting was normal but, shortly before we left around 7:00 PM, they turned the lights down; and it got very dark. I'm glad we had eaten before because it would have been difficult to see the food. The service overall was very good although a bit slow, but that is understandable because they had to shuck the oysters. I ordered a dozen West Coast oysters. I was a little shocked at the price ($48). Online it had indicated 3 for $9. I should have read the menu but, to me that is another issue. You have to code your phone and check out the menu that way. My Son is comfortable with that, but I prefer a paper menu. That said, the oysters were very good. I also ordered Salmon Don, which is basically sashimi. It was very fresh and delicious. For a drink I ordered what I thought was a large hot sake, but they gave me a small one; so I had to order another sake. It was good. My Son ordered the Salmon Teriyaki, and he really enjoyed it. He also had 2 Lycee martinis, which he said were quite good. I'm glad we went the time of day we did. I don't think I would have enjoyed the place late at night. Luckily, although the place was exceptionally noisy for so few patrons, they didn't have any loud music, which was a plus. I definitely want to return to this place for the food, but will do it before evening hours.

Heather W.

Yelp
I'm not sure if I love the food here- it's ok! Great HH. Very friendly service! I'm not convinced these dumplings are "homemade". Burger was flavorful and a good snack!

Alissa O.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday around 4:30pm sat right outside and came for the happy hour! Beers were nicely cold so refreshing! Then tried some oysters, karaage don, salmon don and spicy chicken! Would highly recommend each but the karaage don was our favorite. Unfortunately it started getting busy when we ordered the spicy chicken but flavor was still good just somewhat warm so recommend ordering food all at once to avoid that. Other than that food was so yummy, well priced, and drinks for happy hour were great! Drinks: If you're looking for refreshing drinks definitely recommend the sake and beer. Something sweet like candy get the plum wine sangria

Vishnu G.

Yelp
This is a nice spot for dinner and drinks in UWS. I stopped in with a few friends on a Tuesday night. The spicy tofu don was tasty, and there was a good selection of sake available. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the neighborhood.

Sawako Y.

Yelp
I've been here a few times now for happy hour. Last time, I had Plum Wine, which isn't part of their happy hour menu, but I ordered it regardless, since it's one of my favorite drinks. It was served in a wine glass with tons of ice, though, and wasn't that great. I didn't love the happy hour white wine either, so tonight, we tried the sangria. I had the white sangria and my bf ordered the red. We both really enjoyed our drinks--they were fruity and on the sweeter side. For $6 a glass, it's great value and I think this will be my go-to happy hour drink at Dark Bullet from now on.

Daniel C.

Yelp
Something quirky about this place but can't quite describe it. Seems to be a slightly worn out restaurant space which probably has a new name . I sat outside because inside was very loud . Crowded and music very loud . I had east coast oysters . Fresh and delicious. The homemade sauces were good . I also had a sashimi combination roll wound in thinly sliced cucumber. Very good . I would go back .

Sandy Y.

Yelp
Chill, dive-y vibe. The oyster quality is pretty good! Got the seasonal west coast oysters and they were bug, plump, and delicious. Happy Hour deals are great so DEF take advantage. The donburi, yuzu salmon, and fries were pretty standard. I would come again only for the hot sake and oysters.

Vicky R.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place on a cold night and it was amazing. They have some outdoor seating all with heat lamps. The tables are a bit close together though. We started off with some happy hour drinks ($5 draft beer, $6 sangria until 7 pm every day). The plum wine sangria was super sweet and delicious! We also started with spicy chicken wings. They were so crunchy and flavorful. I wish there were more than 4! Such a tease but left us with enough belly space to try more dishes. We also got the hot pot soup appetizer. It was actually quite big, and could be enough for an entree. It had a lot of tender chicken pieces and veggies, and was pretty spicy. We ended with the karaage don, which had a nice curry flavor and amazing rice. The soft boiled egg was so good and went well with the dish. The waiter was also very cheery and so nice! We love this place and can't wait to be back.

Mandy J.

Yelp
Fun easy going bartenders! The music is not too loud. They serve thai food as well as japanese food. I enjoy playing card and pool here with friends!

ray f.

Yelp
Depends on what you want. This is a bar first and a Japanese restaurant first. Beers, drinks, pool table, some bros. Oh, and they offer an odd collection of Japanese izakaya dishes, oysters, and sake. Food is OK but I wouldn't go back just for the food. Sooo, if you want a bar bar in this area, maybe play some pool And you want Japanese food to go with it, give it a try. If a Japanese izakaya is your primary objective, this is not it.

Joy G.

Yelp
How have I not been here sooner? This place is the very definition of fun vibes. It's more of a lounge than a restaurant, with pool tables in the back if you want to do a game. Our waiter with the cool blue hair couldn't be friendlier, popping in every now and then to check on how we were doing, and I saw him passing out shots to the regulars. First of all, this place does oysters extremely well. We went with three of the West Coast oysters to start and these were some of the best I've ever tasted: fresh, sweet, nary a stray shard to be found. I also liked the different kinds of sauces they had, especially the spicy and yuzu ones. If you're an oyster person, I recommend Dark Bullet for that reason alone. They had a good selection of appetizers: I liked the garlic rock shrimp, which came submerged in a delicious chili oil, and the healthy magic roll with a tasty sesame dressing that I'll have to figure out how to make and douse everything in it. The only thing I didn't love was the toasted bass I ordered as an entree - it came flattened and covered in a creamy miso sauce that was a little too salty. Overall, a cool spot to grab a drink and some appetizers. I'd want to come back and try the different kinds of donburi and of course, more of the oysters.

Julie T.

Yelp
Can't say enough about Dark Bullet. The locals know this is where to go for a great HH. Marco is a true host and always knows how to ensure the guests are happy! Always a smile and a great bartender. There are times too he is there alone and everyone is taken care of! Love Dark Bullet and it's become a regular weekend stop before any day out on the town.

Joely T.

Yelp
Great spot to grab some drinks and oysters! Definitely more of a bar scene but the food does not disappoint. A great place to stop by when on the UWS

Ty H.

Yelp
Oh wow. What a find. The big question about walking when we first walked in as there was no one here. But we decided to try the oysters on the chance... We have the East Coast oysters. A dozen. They were fabulous. The drinks were excellent and so were the bowls. A good find. Looks like a dive bar... just be warned.

Caroline F.

Yelp
Late night ahi sashimi and pork belly bowl was perfect for our arrival night in Manhattan. Chill vibe and great food! I never give 5 stars Yao consider this as tops review!

Tony J.

Yelp
Cool spot in upper east side to grab oysters cold brew sake and edamame. I had the garlic Spicy edamame. Can you say ADDICTIVE! Ordered 3 rounds and washed down with ice cold Sapporo on tab. Friendly neighborhood spot mixed crowd pool shooting in back abs winnie is excellent you'll love her and the bar team!

Kelly L.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to go to. Great drink and great food, their shrimp fried rice and baked oysters are my favorites! Cold sake and any cocktails are all very good (especially the ones with Yuzu in it)

Joe M.

Yelp
First things first, this is a great place to people watch. Service is amazing and the food is surprisingly good, especially their rice bowls, as well as their fries! Not a spot if you're a beer snob, but it's awesome for after hours and they make very strong lychee martinis.

Erica R.

Yelp
Food is really good. I love coming here. The waiters are super friendly. Favorite app is the popcorn chicken and purple fries. The sauce is deeelicious. Never disappoints.

Austin H.

Yelp
Happy hour! The happy hour is from 1-7pm everyday. $5 draft beer, $6 sangria and $7 cold sake. The beers are cold and refreshing. They have nice options of oysters. The east coast oysters were salty, cold and delicious. The service was okay, a little slow but everyone was extremely nice. Overall, a great experience to sit outside, have a few drinks and snacks on the upper west side.

Chris K.

Yelp
Stopped by this place from their good reviews and really liked the vibe. It's a dark, cozy restaurant with a wide bar, pool table and neighborhood feel. We tried a few oyster options -- the oysters were OK, we didn't love the accompanying sauces. I personally loved the miso soup I got and their Sangria options were tasty. Overall I'd stop by if in the area, but I'm not rushing to go back.

Leslie M.

Yelp
It was late, almost everything was closed and I was craving oysters. I was almost sure I was going home unsatisfied until Dark Bullet popped up. I was greeted with a smile and took a seat outside which is great for late night people watching. The oysters were delicious I tried two different kinds and the waitress was really helpful in explaining their flavors. I also tried their spicy chicken. I tried a lychee cocktail that they usually make with tequila but I opted for vodka instead. Over all a great experience.

Lu H.

Yelp
I was excited to come here because there's no sake spot on UWS. We strategically decided to come here on a chill Sunday afternoon. The exterior is very unnoticeable, and they have this whole waterfall thing covering their street-facing windows so people can't see what's inside. We actually walked past it without even realizing. Once we traced back our steps and walked in, inside felt very spacious and a lot brighter than exterior. I don't understand why they are making it look darker and less friendly from the outside? Once we walked in, we were welcomed immediately, and Leo brought us drinks/food menu. There were very few people there given the time of the day. Our waitress Fong was super helpful, let us try multiple sakes before we decide on what glass to go with. We also ordered spicy wings and crunchy shrimp. The dishes definitely tasted more Thai than Japanese, which slightly confused me given its selling point is sake hence I thought dishes would be more like izakaya style. With that said I guess if you want to survive on UWS, you have to tailor to a broader audience. Anyways, this is no East Village or midtown East Japanese spot, but our experience here was pleasant, definitely would come back to try more sake.

Chris Y.

Yelp
It's a bar, oyster bar and japanese restaurant hybrid. Really cool! With the current outdoor dining structure, its unrecognizable lol! But the crowd will definitely catch your attention. I went at an odd 4.30pm and it was BUSY! Food 5/5 Surprisingly good. Only tried the hot soup and the fried chicken as it was just a snack for me before dinner. Both dishes were on point! The hot soup is very flavorful and comforting. The fried chicken was crunch and very well presented. Service 5/5 Great service, very friendly and helpful. I waited for a long while for food as it was packed busy but the waiter was so friendly and kept checking in and reassuring they have not forgotten about my order. And I was just chilling out and I didnt even once ask! Everyone was wearing a mask Ambiance Great outdoor sitting structure. Sat outside given the pandemic.

Biana G.

Yelp
Izakaya with extensive sake list and delicious small plates, perfect for sharing. Some standouts include the thin & delicate handmade pork dumplings, yuzu salmon, and Tokyo tartar. Fresh and generous bites of raw fish! Our server also recommended one of the two fish dishes as an entree which was also fantastic. Dark Bullet Sake & Oyster Bar offers a non-pretentious, dive bar feel.. no frills, just great food & drinks in a chill atmosphere.

Rachel C.

Yelp
Karaage Don and oysters were really good, but the spring rolls were terrible. Service and ambience was subpar --lots of ppl on dates tho

Robyn D.

Yelp
Loved it! Had karaage and it was incredible! More of a bar/nightclub scene at night but still fun atmosphere.
