Das Alte Haus

"In this attractive, cosy yet modern restaurant, the cooking is ambitious and creative with international influences. You can put together dishes from the menu to create a set meal with the number of courses of your choice, to be accompanied by an extensive selection of fine German wines. There is also a pairing menu. Delightful terrace." - Michelin Inspector

Nice vibe and service absolute! The menu is also very fancy and diversified, some matches very well together, some is not my taste, but in a word. Top restaurant in Braunschweig, worth definitely another visit.

Truly superb! Every single dish! The food honestly was better than some of the food I had in restaurants with one Michelin star. Some dishes are really grounded in down-to-earth home cooking - e.g., the hearty bread doesn't come with olive oil or butter but with cheese and cold cuts like in a very traditional German snack, and one of the seven highlights of the seven-course-menu entailed an incredibly tasty slice of blood sausage - while others entail pure magic, such as the white (!) coffee ice cream and the cheese course that was half dessert, half molecular cuisine. The wine pairing was equally a delight - consisting entirely of German wines, it also was one treasure after the other! If you have any doubt whether Germany can produce good wines, you'll get rid of them here... The fantastic service rounded of the experience, with a really nice touch being the menu featuring the names of both the chef and the fabulous waiters. Don't miss this gem!

The food is way too high overrated. The taste of the dishes has nothing extraordinary and the service is very slow. The dessert was a random mixture of ingredients with a very unpleasant sour taste. I will never ever return to this place.

Yelp
Das Alte Haus is certainly part of the slow-food, farm-to-table, and locally sourced movements. As expected, each dish was perfect, beautiful, and delicious. I really loved the soups and all the different sauces in the dishes. The really nice waitress told us that the chef, Enrico Dunkel, changes the menu completely more than once a week based on local and seasonable ingredients of course. Each dish was very complicated, and she would spend over a minute explaining each one. The menu is offered as 4 courses (73 euro), 5 courses (86 euro), and 6 courses (97 euro). When we went, there was one main dish option with 4 appetizers and 2 desserts as options. Thus, we were able to try everything on the menu with the 4-course menu, and we had the wine pairings for about 20 euro. The meal took over 3 hours! This was quite a surprise so plan accordingly. A reservation is definitely needed.

Yelp
Worst restaurant policy or service ever in my life. Never had I experienced such a racist service attitude of my life. This is basically what happen: Me and my boyfriend was visiting Braunschweig for business trip, and so did our family. Both of us has a nice dinner, the food was creative and tasty. Decorations of the dishes were beautiful. Set menu was well thought out and planned. However, the shock came, when 2 of our family came late and wanted to have a glass of wine with us. So, we were at the end of the course ( we were drinking tea and would pay afterwards), our family just finished a business dinner, and would like to wait for us and have a wine with us at the restaurant. It was a slow night, only 2 table (including us) at the store. And we were the last table (at 9:30pm), there were no other customers. We asked if we could order a glass of wine for our family, however the waitress to us that : You cannot order any wine and we have to ask your family to leave the restaurant !! And our family had to leave awkwardly right away. I have been to hundreds of restaurant, high end or local. Never have I been so embarrassed in my life. This is a high end restaurant for the city, and your services is terrible. First rule: never kick out your customer without proper reason. All my family wanted were have a wine with us so we could walk back to the hotel together. We weren't loud and or acting crazy, or whatever stereotype you had about Asians. There were no one is the restaurant anymore, and all we want was to have a wine with family at the end of dinner. But, you chose to kick out them rudely. For this terrible experience, I would never go back again and would not recommend to anyone else. There are so many other restaurant who had the same quality of the dish as you, but 1000% better service than you. And when you hold yourself so "royally", I guess we don't "deserve" to visit you in our life.
