The Daugavpils Fortress is an impressive fortress. The fortress is placed outside of Daugavpils. The fortress has had various purposes since 1810. Both Napoleon, World War 2 and during the Soviet era were involved with the Daugavpils Fortress. Today the fortress is pretty much run down. The best place is the Nicholas Gate and the buildings where the art museum is. We were told by some very nice historians by the Nicholas Gate that because we were visiting during the winter most of the museums were closed. Around the fortress a lot of ruins can be seen from the fortress wall. It's a fun area to explore and It's definitely worth a visit!

This place exceeded our expectations. Highly recommend stopping by the Tourist Information office. Vitalijs will give it meaning and the back history which gave it so much more meaning than if we just walked around. He’s very passionate about getting it restored and I’m hoping that happens. It’s got some really really cool history. Def go!! Def get some info before you walk around. ! The picture I attached is from the TI’s office.

Beatiful and historic place. Has remainings of the Fortress and some other old buildings. Nice walk around, although why only 4 stars. Despite having a museum of art, medicine, and war, it feels like it hasn't been used to its full potential. Some work needs to be done on some of the old buildings which are in ruins, which could be used for other cultural or entertaining purposes. Ofcourse it might also be a slight mood killer that it has local residents sharing the routes and part of the grounds of the Fortress. Nevertheless worth your visitx entry into the inside of the fortnerr is free, you can just come in. Hope to see see some potential future development!

This is a very interesting place and a must visit if you are visiting Daugavpils. But be prepared to see not only historical buildings but also old and destroyed buildings that need in the best way to put it serious renovation. You must be very cautious if you want to see the whole area of the fortress and not only the nice renovated area in front of the main entrance.

Amazing old area of militaries (from beginning of 19th century), huge territory. Buildings are partially renovated, only a few. Minus was that there are no signs where is what located, where are the most famous places like Rothko art Center. One have to discover himself. There are no explanatory signs with history information unfortunately. We read before in visitdaugavpils site, it was good. Place was almost empty in November Sunday day.

Overvalued due to Marko Rothko Art center. Many building not renovated and are in miserable conditions. The Police and Government Archive very well renovated. Much place to walk.

Some of parts of the fortres was reconstructed however, most of the buildings inside are still abandoned. But nevertheless it is still a very beautiful and spiritual place with its own charm.
